CLEP Success: How to Pass the Humanities Exam

The CLEP Humanities exam is worth 6 college credits and tests a student's knowledge of literature, art, music, and architecture. This is a very broad exam consisting of 120 questions that need to be answered in 90 minutes.

All the questions are multiple choice and some incorporate visual elements, like works of art from various historic periods or drawings of ancient architecture from Rome and Greece.

Since this particular CLEP exam covers so many topics, most questions will be very general. For the art questions for instance, be familiar with the general characteristics of artistic periods: know the traits of baroque, neo-classical, and impressionism, to name a few. Questions on architecture will also focus on general features of buildings from broad historical periods.

The questions on music mainly cover notation and other symbols, like key signature and clef. There won't be many questions on music history, just the basic mechanics.

A student's knowledge of literature needs to be more specialized for this exam despite its broad overview. Passages from plays, novels, and famous speeches comprise part of the literature related questions as well as types of characters and their symbolism within literature. Familiarity with Greek tragedies and myths is very helpful.

Some parents may be wary of the material their children will be exposed to in studying for this exam. There is little chance of encountering any artwork of an offensive nature on the actual exam but in typical art textbooks, this may be an issue.

What's more effective, CLEP or the classroom?

CollegePlus! encourages students to save time and money on their college degrees by doing coursework through credit by exam (like CLEP and DSST) instead of spending excessive time and expense on classroom study.

One of the biggest misconceptions people have expressed about CLEP is the idea that students learn more in the classroom from a professor than by studying for an exam on their own. However, according to the College Board, CLEP testers actually surpass their class-bound counterparts in several key areas. According to the research, students taking CLEP exams:

Score one-half a grade point higher

Earn more credits each semester

Graduate just as often or more often than traditional students

Earning college credit through CLEP can save students more than 50% on their college costs. Find out all the details about credit by exam or download the new CollegePlus! ebook on combining high school and college!

Summit Ministries Partners with CollegePlus!

Dr. David Noebel and Summit Ministries have equipped thousands of believers with foundational worldview training since the ministry's inception in 1962. Dr. Noebel has made every effort to stem the alarming number of believers who abandon Christianity while in college.

Now Summit Ministries and CollegePlus! have teamed up to deliver this same excellent worldview training to CollegePlus! students.

Since CollegePlus! gives students the opportunity to equip themselves in biblical worldview principles while completing their degrees, our core principles perfectly align with those of Summit. Speaking of the program Dr. Noebel says, "CollegePlus! is standing against the tide of moral relativism, giving parents and students the option to sidestep liberal professors while gaining a first-class college education."

Currently, Summit hosts 10 worldview conferences every summer for students, adults, and ministry leaders. The classes that comprise these conferences are taught by such worldview giants as Norman Geisler, JP Moreland, and Jeff Myers. CollegePlus! students will rally at the Manitou Springs, CO campus on August 16 for two weeks of the very best worldview teaching and a chance to network and meet hundreds of other students from around the country.

CollegePlus! students can actually earn three college credits from Bryan College this summer at the Summit worldview conference in August. These credits are accepted at regionally accredited institutions and are granted at a discounted rate for CollegePlus! students.

Get more information about Summit or all the details about the worldview conference this August.

CLEP Success: Social Sciences and History

The CLEP Social Sciences and History exam consists of approximately 120 multiple choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. With a little bit of study and brushing up on your history facts, you can earn yourself 6 college credits by passing this exam.

You will encounter a large scope of questions, with some concerning:

United States history

World history

Political science

along with a smattering of

Economics

Sociology

Anthropology

Psychology

Geography

How to Prepare

You need to maintain a BIG, overall perspective in this test because it covers so many areas of social science. If you get overwhelmed with all the material to learn, step back and see the broader picture of how each of the subjects interact with each other. It is important to pay attention to distinguishing aspects of each time period and people group, looking at styles, traditions, and trends which set that time apart from the others.

The broad nature of this exam can work to the student's advantage. Since there is so much material to be covered in a mere 120 questions, the exam won't include much detailed information on particular time periods, ancient people groups, or social theories.

When you are studying, keep in mind that most students tend to be a little weak in the world history area, so put a little extra effort into this.

Gary DeMar Endorses CollegePlus!

Gary DeMar has helped spearhead the call for Americans to rediscover the godly heritage of our nation. DeMar has now joined the chorus of Christian leaders who have endorsed the CollegePlus! approach to higher education.

For years, CollegePlus! has supplemented students' US History CLEP studies with DeMar's God and Government series. While it is common for students to only hear the revisionist side of American history, the biblical foundation to our nation's founding is often lost and forgotten. Not so with CollegePlus! students, who learn the Christian side of US and world history while earning college credits through passing CLEP exams.

For the rest of this month, anyone who enrolls in CollegePlus! will receive a $250 gift certificate to resources from American Vision, DeMar's organization for promoting biblical history. Apply to CollegePlus! today!

Lauren Zimmerman, a CollegePlus! grad, and her husband Tait have been married for just over a year and have already been blessed with a son, dubbed "Little Tait" by the family.

Born prematurely, Little Tait has experienced major health complications since his birth and the Zimmermans have requested help from family and friends to cover the exorbitant hospital bills.

We're joining this effort to spread the word about Little Tait. You can read Little Tait's story and donate to the remaining $20,000 the Zimmermans have in hospital bills.

They've already received $30,000 in donations but if they don't reach the $50,000 mark by June 3, their bill will be turned over to collections and will skyrocket to the original $186,000. But this expense is just the neonatology bill. After that, there is at least another $650,000 in hospital bills. You can see the total bill at Little Tait's needs page. Thanks for helping Little Tait as soon as possible.
