Charter school are elementary school or secondary education in the United States, which receive public funds, but were free of certain rules, regulations and statutes which, for other public schools in exchange for any type of responsibility for the manufacture of certain results that are in every school in the Charter.

Charter schools have the potential to enhance competition in the public education sector. In one education publication, Charter Schools could have a particularly significant impact in the labor market for teachers. This study uses data on more teachers from one of school districts to explore the impact of charter school competition on the compensation of teachers at traditional public schools. The analysis suggests that once charter enrollments reach critical mass, increasing competition from charter schools increases salaries for all but the most experienced teachers.

While charter schools, an alternative to other public schools, they are part of the public and are not entitled to free education. In case of lack of space on a charter school is limited; admission is often the permissions on the basis of lottery. Some charter school teachers, parents, or activists, by the traditional public schools. In addition, schools may allow companies to open channels of benefit of the Charter for the schools.

LabMath-Indonesia is an independent research institute. We work together with various universities in Indonesia and abroad. This is shown in our activities:

We regularly organize so-called Research Work Shops where students (S1,S2 and S3) and staff from universities, governmental institutions and companies, are introduced into a specific topic. After one week of courses and small assignments, the second week is dedicated to execute more extensive projects that usually are closely related to current research. As an example, in the past year we organized RWS on Tsunami
Modelling and Simulations (January 2009), Financial Engineering (August 2008) and Integrated Water Resource Management (Jan 2008). Our research activities are supported by external sources: international research projects, projects from large , and from Indonesia.

In the coming years we want to focus our activities to problems from nature and environmental sciences. Especially about problems that are of direct relevance for Indonesia: effects of Climate Change on the coastal area (high waves, endangering the coast and ships and offshore structures) and on the (rain) water availability for agriculture and human consumption.

This year we have national and international symposia on these topics. For the preparation of new research contributions, and for the running research projects, we can use the help of good students and graduates.

While working with you on interesting topics, you are developing your skills; besides that, if needed, we support you to improve your English. If you want, we can advise about studying abroad. (For instance, LMI hosts the Info & Support Office of the University of Twente.)

Below we indicate some topics for which we look for your interest to contribute to our research.

MODELING AND MEASURING EVAPOTRANSPIRATION
Almost half of the rain falling on the ground is evaporated or transpirated by plants. BMKG, the Indonesian Institute for Meteorology, Climate and GeoScience, wants to be able to predict the ET. For that aim we want to make a model based on rainfall, soil properties, and weather conditions, in particular the wind. We will use satellite data to improve the predictive models that we make.
Two students from the university of Twente visiting LMI will also work on this topic, so that a close collaboration can lead to substantial results in a recently granted KNAW-mobility Project.

HARBOUR WAVES
We want to use new codes that have been developed at LMI to simulate waves in a harbour to predict the maximal wave heights and investigate undesired resonant motions. A realistic Indonesian harbour is taken as test case. This project is in collaboration with UGM.

WIND GENERATION OF OCEAN WAVES
Climate change will lead to stronger winds and therefore to higher waves. Wave prediction in the coastal area is important for coastal safety measures. This project is aimed to contribute to the development of a complete simulation environment for coastal waves.

HYDRO-LAB RESEARCH
We have various problems that are directly or indirectly related to ship design and safety of sea transport.

INTERNSHIP RESEARCH POSITION: OFFER
The internships are executed at LabMath-Indonesia, Jl. Anatomi 19, Bandung.
Including a one-month probation period, the positions are for a period of 3 months with the possibility of prolongation. During the execution you will get valuable experience in mathematical modelling and will work in a stimulating environment. The monthly allowance will depend on qualifications and performance.The internships are planned to start not later than 1 May 2009.

REQUESTED QUALIFICATION
Candidates should be eager to be involved in this research and learn many new topics and ideas. They should have good knowledge of calculus/ analysis including ordinary and partial differential equations, and be experienced in programming, for instance in Matlab.
Students or graduates with good grades in S1 or S2 from mathematics, physics, oceanography, geosciences, engineering etc can profit very much from this research experience. A sound scientific attitude (critical, inventive and independent) should be accompanied by a strong motivation and disciplined work attitude.

Applications are invited for a three year post-doctoral position, based at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, to conduct neuro-imaging research into the dynamic neural systems underlying human language comprehension, working in an interdisciplinary cross-linguistic research environment, with access to state-of-the art MEG (306-channel Elekta/Neuromag VectorView) and MRI (Siemens Trio 3T) imaging facilities.

This position is funded by an interdisciplinary EPSRC (UK) grant to Lorraine Tyler (Centre for Speech Language and Brain, Cambridge), William Marslen-Wilson (MRC-CBSU), Anna Korhonen (Computing Lab, Cambridge) and Paula Buttery (Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics) , which aims to integrate research in cognitive neuroscience, experimental psycholinguistics and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Modern advances in NLP provide much more realistic analyses of the statistical properties of language use. The aim of the project is to integrate these analyses with neuro-imaging investigations of how brain systems respond to variations in the statistical properties of linguistic inputs at different levels of description (morphological, syntactic, semantic).

You should have doctoral training in neuro-imaging with a strong interest in studying the neuro-cognition of language, and a willingness to take on the challenge of systematically relating the statistical properties of linguistic inputs to the statistical properties of the dynamic neural
response to these inputs.

The starting salary will be in the range of £25,368 - £31,048 per annum, depending upon qualifications and experience. This is supported by a flexible pay and reward policy, and optional MRC final salary Pension Scheme. We offer 30 days annual leave entitlement. On site parking is

University of Kent's Brussels School of International Studies

Applications are invited for two scholarships for politics students wishing to begin their studies at the University of Kent's Brussels School of International Studies in January 2009.

We invite applications for the position of a Research Assistant / PhD student to work within the Dialogue Group at the Department of Linguistics, University of Potsdam, Germany. The position is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension for an additional two years.

The successful applicant will work in the context of the project ``InPro: Incrementality and Projection in Dialogue Processing', which aims to investigate incremental processing methods for spoken dialogue systems. The main resposibility for the incoming RA / PhD student will be in the area of dialogue management. The team comprises one other PhD student and one Post-Doc.

Ideal candidates for the RA / PhD position have an excellent degree in Computational Linguistics, Linguistics, or Computer Science, and have shown ability for conducting original research. Prior work on dialogue systems and especially dialogue management would be a definite plus. Good programming skills are important, a keen interest in problem solving and research is essential. The successful candidate is encouraged to work towards a PhD degree in Computational Linguistics from the University of Potsdam.

The mathematics and biosciences group (MaBS, homepage www.mabs.at) at the University of Vienna is looking for a strong and highly motivated candidate for a PhD position in evolutionary modeling and statistical data analysis.

Research environment: Vienna is not only one of the world's most liveable cities, but also offers an excellent research environment and currently develops into one of the main centers in evolutionary research in Europe. The position will be located at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories, part of Vienna's strong bioscience campus.

Project: Due to modern methods of high-throughput sequencing, huge amounts of DNA sequence data from population samples ("polymorphism data") are available today. Interpretation of these data is an important task for theoreticians. In the project, we will develop novel methods to detect so-called footprints of selection in DNA polymorphism data. These footprints can be used to describe the pattern of recent adaptations on a genome. We will particularly focus
on effects of population structure and spatially variable selection on genetic footprints. We will use mathematical methods based on stochastic processes (coalescent theory) and extensive computer simulations. The project is part of an international DFG-research group "Natural Selection in Structured Populations" in collaboration with groups in Evolutionary Biology at the University of Munich, and Mathematics at the University of Freiburg.

Conditions: The position is for three years, salary is according to the FWF standard rates for PhD students in Austria. The starting date is flexible (November 08 or later).

Application: We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in quantitative methods (analytical or computational modeling or data analysis) and interest in evolutionary research. Applicants should have a Master / Diploma degree in natural science (e.g. biology or

Applications are invited immediately for postgraduate scholarships in theology at Mary Immaculate College, commencing Spring Semester 2009. The scholarships, which are valued at ca €16,000 p.a., will be awarded on a two or three year basis depending on whether candidates satisfy university requirements for registration as fulltime MA or PhD students.

Of particular interest to the Department of Theology & Religious Studies are graduates with expertise not only in theology but preferably also in history or sociology, and who are interested in researching in ecclesiology, particularly where this interfaces with pastoral theology and canon law, with a view to exploring issues of participative leadership that have historical precedents.

Research Doctoral Scholarships

The University of Teesside is offering three full-time Research Doctoral Scholarships across the broad theme of business applied to any area of the public, private or voluntary sectors or partnership working between them. Key areas of research strength within Teesside Business School (TBS) are around public sector management, public governance, HRM, urban and rural regeneration, leisure and tourism, marketing, organisational learning, leadership and strategy. Applications in these areas would be particularly welcome. The award/s will be for a period of three years and include fees (home/EU or international rate) and an annual stipend of £12,940. It is anticipated that the successful candidates will, through their research, also contribute to the delivery of business and/or business-related programmes within TBS for a maximum of 6 hours a week. Successful applicants should be in a position to take up the scholarship by November 2008.

Job description
The project is entitled: The Construction of Assurance Expertise on Sustainability

The past decade has seen the emergence of practice in assurance on sustainability reports (‘sustainability assurance') with high profile professional accountancy bodies such as the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, placing the development of a sustainability assurance standard near the top of its strategic agenda. This in-depth longitudinal field study aims to enhance our theoretical and empirical understanding of the processes surrounding the emergence of sustainability assurance. Empirically, the study will examine the role and focus of key actors in the emergence of assurance concentrating on: how competing claims to professional expertise in sustainability assurance have been constructed and legitimised; the dominant and shifting assurance discourses; and how target audiences have reacted to these discourses. Theoretically, the study will draw on frameworks derived from Actor Network Theory and neo-institutional theory. The study calls for a broad range of research methods competencies, particularly in qualitative methods, an excellent ability think conceptually, competence in research liaison with organizations and high level individuals, and excellent external presentation skills.

Requirements

Required education/skills: University Graduate

* Master's (MSc) in the area of accounting (or equivalent) with excellent examination results in both course work and the MSc thesis component;
* Interest and experience in field research (for example, in the MSc thesis);
* Demonstrated Mastery of both written and spoken English;
* Conviction to complete the requirements toward a PhD degree within four years.

Additional conditions of employment:
The appointment will initially be for 18 months, to be extended to a total of 4 years upon excellent performance (an evaluation will be held after 14 months). The salary will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel, and will range from € 2,000 (first year) up to a maximum of € 2,558 (final year) gross per month. The collective employment agreement of the Dutch universities will be applicable. The PhD thesis should be finalised within four years. In this period, the candidate will also be expected to do some teaching (20% of the time).
