If you intend to share your toy with your partner then its recommended that you both use condoms so as to prevent the spread of STD’s. This should be done in conjunction with proper cleaning to prevent bacterial spread. Condoms are also recommended if you intend to use the toys in different parts of your body. This again will prevent bacteria being spread.

We would also highly recommend you carefully check your sex toy from the day you get it and on a regular basis thereafter for any tears or cracks. This is because glass or plastic sex toys may be liable to crack whereas silicone, rubber or jelly toys can tear. Acrylic

For Acrylic Sex Toys use either an anti-bacterial soap with water or sex toy cleaner. Dry naturally or by using a soft cloth.

Cyberskin

Wash gently with warm water, if you wish to use soap then make it a mild anti-bacterial variety and leave to air dry. Following this use a light covering of cornstarch to help the toy maintain its condition and prevent it becoming sticky.

Glass

The bonus of having a glass sex toy is that it can be put in the dishwasher for cleaning failing that use a sex toy cleaner or a gentle anti-bacterial soap with warm water. An alternative to the dishwasher would be to boil your glass toy. Air dry.

Jelly

Use warm water and a gentle anti-bacterial soap. You need to make sure that ALL of the soap is gone following the clean so as to make sure the jelly material doesnt become damaged. Air dry or wipe with a soft cloth. Its probably best to clean this type of material with a sex toy cleaner to make sure the job is done right and that no harm comes to the toys material. Again an alternative option would be to always use jelly sex toys with condoms.

Leather

To clean wash with warm, soapy water. After drying the addition of saddle soap will help the leather to stay in top condition. If stored for long periods make sure its in a cool, dry place to stop mould forming.

Lucite

Use warm water and anti-bacterial soap then dry.

Nylon

Use warm soapy water and then air dry.

Plastic

Anti-bacterial soap with water and then air dry or wipe with a soft cloth.

Rubber

As with jelly sex toys the best thing to do with rubber toys is to use a condom each time. If you dont want to do that then use a gentle anti-bacterial soap along with warm water. Sex toy cleaner would be another option for cleaning this type of toy.

Silicone

Is your silicone sex toy battery operated? If it is then it should be cleaned with sex toy cleaner or a gentle anti-bacterial soap with warm water and then air dried or wiped with a soft cloth. If your silicone sex toy has no electrical parts then it can also be boiled for between two-ten minutes, put in a dishwasher or even cleaned in a baby bottle steriliser.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel can be cleaned in a variety of ways. Dishwasher safe, boil it, use warm soapy water or even an equally divided mix of bleach and water. Dry with a soft cloth for the best results.

REMEMBER – If your toy is electrical DO NOT submerge it in water. You should use a damp, soapy cloth only to clean them and then leave them to dry naturally.

Acrylic

Acrylic sex toys are becoming more popular and the material is similar to the Pyrex bowls you use in the kitchen, its smooth and non-porous. As they are rigid it means thay can maybe be a bit uncomfortable for internal use but are good for clitoral stimulation. Despite being inflexible they are often transparent and lighter than other materials.

As they are non-porous acrylic toys are easy to clean.

Cyberskin

Cyberskin is a brand name of Topco and is a material used for sex toys which have been created to properly emulate the feel of human skin. Similar soft and stretchy products are Ultraskin, Eroskin, Softskin, SoftTouch, Cyber Jel-lee, New supersoft, Futurotic and UR3 (Ultra realistic 3.0).

These products should only be used with water based lubricants to prevent damage to the material.

Cyberskin does not contain Latex, PVC or Phthalates and should be cleaned with soap and warm water.

Elastomer

Elastomers have become popular since the furore that has surrounded PVC and the Phthalates they contain. Elastomers allow manufacturers to make sex toys that are soft and pliable like rubber toys but contain no solvents. If you are allergic to other materials then Elastomers may be an alternative option for you and as a bonus the material is durable.

One thing to note about Elastomer sex toys is that they are porous like the jelly toys they have been made to replace. This means that bacteria can establish itself in the material of the toy so they need cleaning properly. You should clean them with warm water and a mild soap as anything harsher will damage your toy. Another way to keep them free of bacteria would be to use a condom on them each time.

Glass

Glass sex toys are generally dildos and as such are rigid toys that could be uncomfortable for internal use but are definitely fun as clitoral stimulators. You may find it good for g-spot play as the g-spot is best stimulated by firm toys.

Generally the type of glass used is made from medical grade borosilicate glass (which is a hard glass). This type of glass is non-toxic and is able to withstand many different temperatures as well as hard physical use without becoming damaged. As the glass is so tough it can mean that these sex toys will last far longer than your more standard types of sex toys. Glass is also a more “Green” material than some of the others that are used in our industry. Glass can be recycled!

Glass offers another advantage in that it can be warmed or cooled to create additional experiences for the user. To warm simply place under hot water and to cool either place in the freezer or hold under cold water.

Glass sex toys are non-porous and easy to clean.

Jelly

Jelly sex toys are made from PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and have Phthalates (pronounced “tha-lates”) added to them. The Phthalates are softeners which are used to make the PVC flexible and softer to the touch. Phthalates have been used in many other products from perfumes to medical instruments since the 1920′s but in recent years they have been linked to some serious health problems. Due to the fact that Phthalates have been linked to health problems we would recommend that you use them in conjunction with a condom.

With Jelly products it is important that you clean them properly as they are porous and bacteria will find places to “hide” in them. If you dont have any sex toy cleaner then you should use a very mild soap and warm water to clean them. Other, more harsh products such as bleach or alcohol will damage your sex toys and cause them to break down.

In general Jelly sex toys are relatively cheap to buy and come in a wide variety of colours.

Leather

Leather is generally used for restraints, harnesses and clothing. It can be expensive but is hard wearing and easy to keep clean.

Lucite

Lucite is a synthetic polymer which is created from combining transparent plastic, methyl methacrylate and a thermoplastic. Lucite is often transparent so can be mistaken for glass, it is a durable material.

Lucite is Phthalate free, smooth and non-porous. This makes it easy to clean with sex toy cleaners or soaps.

Lucite is tough but can be broken and in that case it would need to be replaced as it would leave sharp edges which could hurt the user.

As Lucite is rigid it is good for use on the g-spot or as a prostate massager which both respond well to some firm attention!

Only use silicone or water based lubes with Lucite.

Nylon

Nylon is another name used for a group of synthetic polymers that are also known as polyamides. It is resistant to oils.

Nylon is very durable and easy to keep clean. It is mainly used for items such as restraints and harnesses but can be used for much more.

Nylon is Phthalate free and is also hypoallergenic.

Plastic

Hard plastic sex toys contain no Phthalates. They are also non-porous so are easy to keep clean and are unlikely to cause problems to anyone who has allergies to other materials.

For your hard plastic toys both silicone and water based lubes are suitable but be aware that a slippy sex toy is easier to drop and plastic toys can break when dropped! When its time to clean your toy then you have more choice of what to use with plastic ones than with some of the others. The plastic isnt damaged by harsh cleaning products like silicone would be.

Being made of plastic means that they are rigid and so arent a great choice for using internally so should be considered more as a clitoral stimulator.

Rubber

Rubber sex toys are generally cheap and unlike jelly sex toys they dont normally have a natural plastic scent. They are made from a latex rubber which makes them firmer than silicone but leaves them relatively soft and flexible.

Rubber is porous so needs good cleaning to prevent a build-up of bacteria in the material.

Cleaning is harder than non-porous materials. As with other porous materials a condom is recommended for each use.

Rubber is firmer than jelly but wont last as long.

They are available in a wide range of colours which includes the favourite, black.

Silicone

Silicone sex toys are often more expensive to buy than toys made from other materials.

Silicone is also one of the most popular materials as it offers many benefits over others such as the fact its non-porous and so easy to clean. The silicone products we are referring to on this page are all 100% silicone.

Silicone offers the user :

1. Can be warmed and holds the temperature for longer than plastic materials.
2. Non-porous meaning that bacteria isnt able to establish itself in the silicone. This makes silicone sex toys easier to clean.
3. Hypo-allergenic – If you are worried that you may have an allergic reaction to our sex toys then go for silicone as this material is less likely to cause any reactions.
4. Silicone doesn’t contain Phthalates.
5. Due to its unique properties silicone will transmit vibrations better than other materials meaning that even a weak vibrator will give more thrills.
6. Silicone is very durable but can be prone to tear.

Do NOT use silicone based lubricants with your silicone sex toys as they will damage them to the point where they will have to be thrown away. Oil or water based lubes are fine to use with silicone products.

If you have a silicone dildo or other toy, other than a vibrator, you can actually put them in your dishwasher or boil them in water to get them clean.

Some manufacturers have been known to create a silicone and rubber mix with only a small amount of silicone involved. These products are then marketed as silicone toys where they dont have the same quality as 100% silicone toys. As there is rubber in the mix it may contain Phthalates and you should be aware of this. If you are ever in doubt use a condom with the toy.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel sex toys are almost as good to look at as they are to enjoy! They are non-porous and Phthalate free. Being made from metal they are very durable and therefore stronger than many other materials.

As they are rigid internal use can be uncomfortable so you may wish to use them more for clitoral stimulation.

Vibrations work their way through metal easily so levels of stimulation can be very good with these toys. These toys can also be warmed up or cooled down as they hold temperatures well. To warm them hold them under warm water and to cool them hold under cold water.

Lubricants to use with your sex toys

Petroleum-based lubricant

Petroleum-based lubricants can cause the slipping and breaking of condoms as they make them lose their elasticity. The lube may also cause small holes in the latex.

Petroleum lubes are cheap but are water insoluble. They may also cause irritation to users.

Silicone-based lubricant

Silicone lubes normally contain less than 4 ingredients non of which are water. Silicone lubes are not absorbed by the skin unlike water based lubes so therefore they last longer.

Silicone lubes can be used with latex condoms but shouldnt be used with silicone sex toys.This is because the silicone in the lubes works to dissolve the surface of silicone based toys which in turn leaves them feeling sticky as it disintegrates. This disintegration can then lead to bacteria building up on the sex toy which can obviously lead to problems for the user.

Lubricated condoms are also normally based on silicone so avoid using them with silicone toys. They use silicone as it lasts longer than other forms of lubricant.

Water-based lubricant

Water based lubricants are the most used type of lubes. They are water soluble but will be absorbed by the skin. They tend to be the least irritable form of lubes that people may use.

As water-based lubricants are water soluble they are useless in the bath or shower but if they should dry out in normal use all you need to do is add water for them to start working again.

• Creams or lotions that are applied to the warts

As with many types of medication, different people will respond better to different treatments. For instance, smokers dont tend to react as well to the treatments as non-smokers do. The reason for this is currently unknown but it may pay smokers to stop or at least cut back when being treated for genital warts. This could lead to the warts healing faster.

Occasionally both of the above treatments may need to be used to remove the warts completely. Generally though, warts that are soft to the touch will be treated with the creams or lotions and harder warts will be removed by laser.

Whichever way is used it can take months for the treatment to be completed so you should be sure to finish the course.

Creams and lotions

There are 3 general topical treatments that are used for the treatment of genital warts and they are :

• Imiquimod
• Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)
• Podophyllotoxin

Of the 3 Imiquimod is normally used for the treatment of larger warts, Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is used for the treatment of small hard warts and Podophyllotoxin for the treatment of groups of smaller warts.

Imiquimod

Imiquimod is a cream which stimulates your immune system so that it attacks the warts. The cream is applied to the warts but then has to be washed off a few hours later and should be applied 3 times a week. Several weeks worth of this treatment may be needed before any changes are noticed.

Side effects of Imiquimod cream are :

• Headaches
• Swollen skin
• Hard, flaky skin
• Burning or itching

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is thought to be the safest of the topical treatments for pregnant women to use. TCA actually attacks the cells of the warts themselves and if it isnt used correctly it can damage normal healthy skin so this treatment should only be applied by a medical professional. For up to 10 minutes following the treatments application a burning sensation may be experienced.

Podophyllotoxin

Podophyllotoxin is a liquid medication and it works by poisoning the warts cells. This treatment is done in cycles and mild irritation can be expected as a side effect. Most treatment plans require 4-5 cycles with rest cycles in between before the course is finished.

Physical removal

There are four types of treatments that work to physically remove the warts and they are :

• Excision
• Laser surgery
• Cryotherapy
• Electrosurgery

Excision

Excision is where, under a local anaesthetic, the wart is cut away. This is normally used for small, hard warts as with larger warts it would possibly leave unsightly scarring.

Laser surgery

Laser surgery may be recommended for pregnant women whose treatment with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) has been unsuccessful.

Laser surgery is also used for treating warts in out of the reach places ie inside your body. With this procedure a laser burns the warts away and the treatment can be under either a local or general anaesthetic. Healing can take between 2-4 weeks.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is used to treat people with lots of small warts mainly on the penis shaft and the vulva. Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart and kills the warts cells by cracking open their outer membranes. This process may need to be repeated to completely get rid of the wart and a burning sensation is to be expected. Healing may take up to 3 weeks.

Electrosurgery

Electrosurgery can be used alongside excision for large anal or vulva warts which havent been cured by topical treatments. Electrosurgery is when the outer “shell” of the wart is cut away and then a metal loop is pushed against the remainder of the wart and an electrical current is passed though it to burn the rest of the wart away. This can be done under either a local or general anaesthetic.

Having sex

It is recommended that you dont have sex until the warts are fully healed. This stops the infection being passed on and will also aid in your recovery. However, for the first 3 months after you have finished treatment it is recommended that you use a condom as the HPV virus can still be present.

A wart sufferer can have a single wart or a bunch of them at the same time.  Although normally painless, irritation may be experienced especially if the warts are around the anus.  Bleeding may occur during sex but its recommended that you dont have sex until the warts have been treated and are fully cleared.

Normally genital warts cause no physical pain but they can cause psychological distress due to their appearance.  Genital warts aren’t a threat to your overall health.

What is HPV?

HPV is a family of over 100 different strains of viruses of which 40 can cause genital warts. The warts can be spread during anal or vaginal sex and through sharing sex toys but be aware that the virus can be passed solely through skin-to-skin contact. Condoms do not provide full protection from the virus passing between people as the genital area NOT covered by the condom can pick up the virus.

If you have warts then this is the most likely time that you will pass on the infection but HPV can be transmitted to a partner even before the warts appear or after they have gone.

Once you have contracted the HPV virus it can take anything up to a year for the warts to appear .So if you have had mutiple partners in that time it could be any of them who passed it on to you and you may have passed it on to others.

Are Genital Warts common?

In England only Chlamydia is a more common STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) than genital warts. In a four year period between 2004-2008 nearly 80,000 cases of genital warts were recorded in England compared to nearly 110,000 cases of Chlamydia over the same time.

The age range of people most likely to have genital warts is :

• 20-24 year old men
• 16-19 year old women

Genital Warts can be treated in a variety of ways but be aware that some treatments can take up to 3 months to fully clear the virus.
