Following yesterday's Business Update by RIM's CEO Thorsten Heins, I figured we'd better follow up fast with a CrackBerry Podcast to sound off on all the news. It sure is a weird and challenging time in BlackBerry history. Honestly, I'm soooo excited for BlackBerry 10 and what it promises to deliver, yet at the same time we're dealing with RIM being in a tougher spot than we're used to seeing as far as business operations go. The next few months leading up to the launch of BlackBerry 10 are going to be interesting to say the least, as things will likely be even more challenging for the company until the new generation products hit the market.

Joining me on this show are Adam, Bla1ze and Umi. I knew me and Umi would be talking lots on this one so we let Craig have a show off - I wanted him to save his voice for the next one where we'll deep dive into Mobile Fusion and take an enterprise look at BlackBerry following BlackBerry World.

Wiggly fun with Scribble Worm for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Scribble Worm for the BlackBerry PlayBook is a highly addictive game that will keep you on your toes – wait, most worms don’t have toes…or feet…or legs for that matter. I’m not sure what it is about games stylised in scribble or a hand drawn manner, but I find them entertaining and makes me reminisce of my own scribbles from years ago. Your goal in Scribble Worm is to get those little green guys to that shiny red apple at the end. Is it a MacIntosh? A red Delicious? Don’t worry about that, just worry about drawing a safe path for the worms to follow. Obstacles come in the form of walls of three different colours – use the blue walls to bounce off of, avoid the red walls at all costs and slowly slide along grey walls. Some are stationary, some are not, so it’s all about angles and timing. Worms will either go in the straight line you drew them in or will turn if you draw them with a curved line. If you’re having trouble, the game has a Hint option with will help you point your green fruit worm in the right direction

Now you may be tempted with drawing a grovelling of worms to flank that fruit, but keep in mind that Scribble Worm is also keeping score. Each level has a par, so as long as you match it, you’ll get a perfect score, and a 4 star rating. Like me, you’ll probably find yourself playing again and again to ensure you get 4 out of 4 stars.

Scribble Worm groups its puzzles into Puzzle Books; 6 books in all, with 8 levels in each. The game also includes a multiplayer mode, where you and a friend must race head to head to be the first to the apple in the center. In this game mode, the scores are simply a tally of how many apples each player has gotten. It’s a great game that will guarantee to challenge and entertain those of almost any age. Dear Berry: PC Sync still not working with my PlayBook!

It's that time of the week again CrackBerry Nation where I cack open the ye olde mailbag and try to help clear up your BlackBerry woes. This week I've decided to let the community take a crack at the answer as this one is stumping even me. Brett writes:

I have posted in the forums and even reached out to RIM directly regarding this and have had no luck(RIM wants to charge me for help when I havent even had the playbook a year WITH the extended warranty). Ever since the update before 2.0 came out I have not been able to sync my playbook with my laptop. I have tried turning off the wifi, blue tooth, uninstalling and reinstalling desktop manager to the newest version but still as soon as I connect my playbook to my laptop (HP DM4 1160 win7 64 bit SP1) it disconnects within a few seconds. I have reformatted the playbook several times with no luck. Any other ideas for me as I see in the forums I am not the only person with this issue! I would love to be able to use my playbook more but without music and movies on there, I end up lugging my laptop with me as well. PLEASE HELP!!!

Verizon rolling out OS 7.1.0.267 for the BlackBerry Bold 9930

It's been a long time since Verizon has released an OS update for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 but it looks like the release we told you about previously has now started to roll out. Though, truthfully it's still far behind the leaked versions and even official versions that are out there. However, if you're looking to stay all Verizon official like you should be able to go ahead and check for OS updates on your device to potentially find it waiting or do like @WayneCook did -- load up the new desktop software to get the OS installed. In other related news, BlackBerry Curve 9370 owners should check fo an update as well.

Given the stock price and today's business update from the CEO, do you still have faith RIM will bring BlackBerry 10 successfully to market on their own?

This evening Research In Motion's CEO Thorsten Heins issued a business update statement. In the last week we've seen rumors surface of looming RIM layoffs and pending inventory write downs, so Heins took control of the message directly. And while there wasn't really any surprising news in the statement, Heins did confirm that RIM had hired J.P. Morgan and RBC Capital to help RIM with its strategic review of business operations and financial performance.

Upon that confirmation we've already seen a flood of stories pop up in the media pointing that the end of RIM as we know it is near.... RIM is going to get acquired... RIM is going to get broken down into pieces and sold... RIM is going to run out of cash before BlackBerry 10 launches... you get the picture. Nothing has really changed between yesterday to today, but a statement like this is a catalyst for headlines to be written, most of which will take the glass half empty vs. half full tone. For a BlackBerry fan, it can be a bit depressing to read, especially considering the post-BlackBerry World excitement around BlackBerry 10.

When Heins took over the reigns at Research In Motion he made it clear on day 1 that he was put in place to run the company and execute on its strategic plans. Specifically, that meant completing RIM's technical platform transition and bringing BlackBerry 10 successfully to market.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 Beta to be released soon, RIM currently testing v2.1.0.560

Internally, RIM has been testing 2.1 builds of their BlackBerry PlayBook OS for quite some time now. Shortly after the big 2.0 OS drop, RIM hopped right into building 2.1 and now they seem ready to go ahead and give folks a look at just what they've been working on according to some tweets from Michael Clewley, BlackBerry PlayBook Product Manager at RIM.

Lots of questions about the #PlayBook 2.1 beta, they will be answered in the blog post when it's available so stay tuned!

Right now, the ETA is sitting at "end of May" -- so take from that what you will. The beta process will be the same as the previous one but we're now hearing the version that is being tested for developer beta release sits 2.1.0.560. What changes will it bring? We'll have to wait and see but I know for sure, PlayBook fans will enjoy going through it and picking out the highlights.

Today RIM released a business update in the form of a press release. CEO Thorsten Heins does a nice job of providing the straight-up goods without a lot of filler.

There were a few bullet points about how successful BlackBerry World was, and some positives on developer engagement. That's the sugar coating. The rest of the news just shows us how tough business is on RIM.

First, and most important, RIM says it probably lost money in Q1. I wrote about this risk plenty, as did others. If RIM lost money in Q1 then things only get worse before they get better.

As we saw earlier today RIM may have another inventory write down when they report their earnings later next month. This afternoon trading of RIM stock has been halted, which is a sure sign of big news as well. As noted in the release below, RIM has hired J.P. Morgan Securities and RBC Capital Markets to help with "strategic review" and "opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives." This could mean RIM is finally looking to licensing their software or even be looking for a possible sale. More on this to come ... Update... see our follow up commentary here.

Talk Clock App - The app for event and conference organizers

When it comes to buying clock apps for your BlackBerry smartphone, no-one does it better than our very own CrackBerry Kevin. But this app is more than just a clock app -- in fact it doesn't even tell you the time. It is more of a countdown clock and a timer (though not just any timer). It goes far beyond that and it's also made for the BlackBerry PlayBook.

The Talk Clock App has been developed for use by conference and events organizers. It has three functions that will aid in organizing the smooth running or events and conferences.

Timer - great for keeping track of talks, making sure they don't go over time. The developer also uses it as a countdown timer for hackathon events he runs.
Messages - Flash messages to speakers telling them how much time is left, or any general announcements you would like to make during events. This would work well with the PlayBook hooked up to a large screen.
Raffle - of course at some events, people like to run raffles. I know a handful of events I attend always have this and this takes it to another level, instead of the old school pick a number out of a hat.

All in all the app looks very useful and the UI is pretty cool too. A nice touch is the fact that you can make the messages and countdown blink red. Another BlackBerry inventory write down?

Bloomberg's Hugo Miller wrote a story today that pretty much says RIM will be taking another inventory write down when the company reports Q1 results later in June. According to the Bloomberg piece, lots of analysts see the risk of a write down because RIM still carries more inventory today than it did last year. And that's unusual for a company going through a sales decline (even if the decline ends up being temporary, which is open to much debate).

RIM has over a billion dollars of inventory on hand and a whole bunch of inventory they've previously written down over the last two quarters. Remember in Q3 when the firm wrote off $485 million of BlackBerry PlayBook inventory and then in Q4 it wrote off $267 million of (mostly) BlackBerry 7 inventory?

Wikitude for BlackBerry updated and revamped

Wikitude has received a welcomed update to version 7 today and there are changes all around. The user interface has had an overhaul and upon launching the app you are presented with a beautiful new homescreen that can be swiped left and right to show you categories and favorites.

This new home screen layout is much more pleasing on the eye and the team at Wikitude have clearly put in a lot of time and effort. As well as the UI changes, Wikitude has also teamed up with a few partners such as TripAdvisor.com and Hotels.com, giving you quick and easy access to services around your location straight from the application homescreen.

BlackBerry 10 Jam was a huge success this year over in Orlando with RIM giving developers the tools they need to create great superb apps for the forthcoming platform. Although RIM is going through a transition period at the moment, the hype regarding BlackBerry 10 is pretty massive and the BlackBerry 10 Jam is commencing its world tour today over in Italy.

Frankly, most things regarding developing on any platform baffle me so I won't waffle on about something I am not all that familiar with, but as an outsider from the developer community it is encouraging to see that many existing BlackBerry devs as well as Android ones committing to the new operating system. At this rate when BB10 does arrive it should have a reasonable amount of quality applications.

With RIM hitting the headlines recently for all the wrong reasons the BlackBerry 10 Jam is another positive example of how the Thorsten Heins and the team are striving to make the company a better place with a quality platform for years to come.

Rogers has officially released OS 7.1.0.391 for the BlackBerry Torch 9810. While this is an official release, remember to use caution when updating your device.
