When the iPhone 4 debuted with the original Retina Display, iPhone apps immediately started being released with better assets to take advantage of the new screen. However, the iPad couldn’t take advantage of these assets without a jailbreak tweak, meaning that even though better quality versions were available, users were still stuck upscaling from low quality files. With the new iPad, and its own Retina Display, that’s all changed.

As TouchArcade discovered , running iPhone (not universal) apps on the new iPad made them use the high-quality assets designed for use on the Retina Display of the iPhone 4 and 4S, rather than the crummy 3GS versions. So why wasn’t this an option before? A commenter on the TouchArcade report has a likely sounding explanation :

The reason for not using them on the old iPad is that you can’t load 2x resources when in 2x mode and then load the normal assets when switching back to 1x mode. The frameworks just don’t support that. Scaling the 2x images down to 1x is not a good choice either as it could result is other visual problems (e.g., 1 pixel lines could be completely lost).

Now that the iPad has enough resolution to show the 2x images at 1x scale without loss of detail, the feature is feasible.

For those of us with older devices, there’s a jailbreak app which will bring this functionality to the iPad 2 called RetinaPad.

In January we reported news that Verizon was working on a shared data family plan , and a new leaked screenshot at PhoneArena seems to confirm that information. The screenshot seems to be an online tool for families to calculate how much data they would burn through in a month, and what data plan would be the most appropriate for them.

PhoneArena seems to think AT&T has something similar in the works , which we can only hope. The prospect of having multiple smartphones and tablets on a single plan at least has major points for simplicity.

So, a question. Assuming you could make some savings by shifting multiple devices onto a family plan, how many of you readers would be willing to shift out of your grandfathered unlimited plan for this? Because if you switch, you know you’d lose that unlimited plan — but would the family wide savings be worth it?

AT&T, Verizon, and Apple have claimed exceedingly good sales of the new iPad over the weekend. On the financial conference call this morning , Tim Cook said “We had a record weekend, and we’re thrilled with it.” Those aren’t firm numbers, but it’s something.

AT&T likewise released a small announcement , simply saying “On Friday, March 16, AT&T set a new single-day record for its iPad sales and activations, demonstrating robust demand for the new iPad on the nation’s largest 4G network, covering nearly 250 million people.”

Verizon’s note was actually slightly less upbeat, but still good. According to AllThingsD , the company said “We are quite pleased with sales, which have been brisk through the weekend, and we are excited to offer customers an alternative that lets them enjoy their new iPad on the nation’s largest 4G LTE network.”

The new iPad runs noticeably hotter than the iPad 2 , to the point were some are even seeing it overheat entirely — but how hot is it getting? Chinese site App111 went above and beyond, and busted out a thermal scanner to see just how bad the heat was. Comparing an iPad 2 to the new iPad, both tablets were put through their paces running Infinity Blade II, and left face down for more than 20 minutes. The result? Parts of the new iPad get up to 32.5°C — that’s 90.5°F, for those who don’t do metric.

In other words, hot, but not scorching.

Why is this happening? Bigger battery, better processor, 4G LTE, and, of course, running that enormous Retina Display. All that adds up to a whole lot more heat.

“The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can’t wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.”

The iPad 3 launch saw the new iPad available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the US Virgin Islands. Despite speculation that Apple might have be facing supply issues due to the new retina display, that doesn’t appear to be the case

In his blog post he said:

It’s easy to conceptually understand the idea of quadrupling the pixel count, but once you actually see what this means, it’s frankly pretty astonishing. The iPad 2’s pixels look gargantuan next to the diminutive pixels from the third-gen iPad.

By the way, Apple’s PR makes it sound like there’s almost no space between individual pixels. While there’s much less space than on the old iPad, rows of pixels are still placed quite a bit apart from each other.

Visit Lukas Mathis website to see how other tablets, phones and gaming devices screens look under the microscope: BlackBerry PlayBook, Kindle Fire, HP Veer, Google Nexus One, Nintendo 3DS, PSP, PlayStation Vita, Xperia Play.

TinyUmbrella has been updated to version 05.10.08 with support for the new iPad and Apple TV.

Semaphore (@notcom on Twitter) updated his blog

With the new iPad 3 and Apple TV 3, it’s been quite busy. Add to that all the cool new information surrounding a few new iOS 5.1 jailbreaks and we have quite the party.

TinyUmbrella now has support for saving 5.1 SHSH for Apple TV 3 and the iPad 3 (all versions).

SHSH blobs of the new iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 4S and Apple TV 3 are not useful currently as they can’t be used to downgrade to older iOS version, but I highly recommend to save SHSH blobs for your device as they could end up being useful in the future
