Craft storage doesn’t have to be pricey – just look at my latest score!

Hello Crafty Friends!

We hope you’re having a great weekend and that you’re getting a little creating in.

I’m using this weekend to work on a few organizing projects, projects that have been screaming for new storage solutions.

I got a screaming deal on the rolling cart below, a cart that can hold quite a bit, but is also short enough to fit under my crafting table (something which has proved challenging since most rolling carts, including my IKEA Raskog cart, are much taller).

I found the cart below at TJ Maxx, in the area where they have back-to-school and dorm furnishings stored, and I just had to share it with you!

Craft Storage Ideas for Tools – An Idea, A Sale & A Giveaway!
Craft storage for tools – there are many options, but this is my fav!

Greetings Crafters!

We hope today’s post finds you enjoying your Summer days and staying cool.

Dang, why’s it so hot everywhere right now?!

Well, the upside is we can stay inside in the A/C and create, right?

My craft studio/office has been a hive of production for the last two weeks.

I’ve been creating the decor items for my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday celebration and it looked like a pink flower bomb went off in here!

Given that my studio/office colors are black and white with pops of red and Disney collectibles, this is most unusual.

It’s o.k. though ’cause I’ve had a blast creating again!

And that brings me to today’s organizing and craft storage solution: the Revolving Organizer from Go-Organize.com.

First off, it’s white which means it will fit into most any decor.

Note: It’s easiest to alter pieces before you assemble the units!

The next feature I’d like to highlight is the large opening in the center of the RO.

I’ve added a short glass in this section to keep my scissors and rulers more tightly corralled, but you could just add tools to this space without using a container.

I love that my super tall rulers (some of which are 18″ tall) are easy to grab and don’t block access to my shorter tools.

Next, check out the many compartments, some of which are large and some of which are divided in two, providing separation for different types or categories of tools.

I like keeping my tools separated by type so this works very well for me.

Note that even my somewhat large Crop-A-Dile and Corner Chompers fit in these compartments.

And then there are three drawers, perfect for storing a sharpener, magnifying glass and glue remover; scrapers and distressers; and, extra cutter blades and Tiny Attacher staple remover and staples.

And finally, there are three elastic loops and four hooks for keeping your must-haves in sight and readily available.

I keep a mechanical pencil, wind-up eraser and pen in one loop; a ‘grabber’ and tape measure in another loop; and, alligator-clip holders in the third loop (these holders are super handy when heating items with your heat gun!).

On the four metal hooks, I store my detail scissors and several different small cutters, scorers and perforators.

Now keep in mind that this unit is not just perfect for storing papercrafting tools.

Oh-no-siree!

It’s also perfect for those who sew, quilt, do needle arts, paint, make jewelry or participate in a variety of other crafting pursuits.

I’m seriously considering getting another one for my office and planner tools!

Craftroom Storage: Ink Pads – Hang Them Up!
Craftroom storage for your ink pads frustrating you? Come ‘hang with us!’

Hello There Crafty Peeps!

We hope this post finds you kicking off your week with a focus on creating.

I’ll be working on party decor for my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday.

I’ve got a picture in my head of how I want the room decor to look and I’ve been ‘collecting’ items to make it a reality.

I can’t wait to see if it comes together like the image I have in my head! Fingers crossed…

And now, on to today’s share – it’s a quick one, a simple and inexpensive solution for storing your ink pads.

I love having lots of ink pads available when I’m creating, but having so many on hand has resulted in my having them stashed in large containers, containers that (when stacked) can get quite heavy and aren’t as easy to access (in my space) as I’d like.

And, these large containers take up a lot of space on my work area when I bring them out of where they’re stored.

I’ve stored my Ranger Distress Ink Pads (along with other ink pads) in these 10″ x 14″ Snapware Snap N Stack rectangular containers for years and it’s been a great solution when I needed to take them with me to crafting events (where I did most of my crafting).

But now that I craft almost exclusively in my craft studio/office, I need a different solution – a solution that not only provides ample storage, but easy access and portability (should I need to take them along on a future crafting adventure).

And, a solution that doesn’t take up valuable real estate on my work surface.

Well folks, I’ve found a solution I absolutely adore!

Check out this Hanging Jewelry Organizer from Sheffield Home.

This version is called the ‘Amour,’ which is perfect considering it’ll be home to my beloved Ranger Distress Ink Pads!

It has 30 small pockets and three larger pockets on each side.

And you know what that means, right?

It’s perfect for holding all 60 colors of Distress Ink…and then some!

It’s also trimmed with black and white stripes and has a huge silver heart in the background – could it be any cuter?!

As you can see, I bought two of these…well actually, I bought four!!!

I am so in love with this craftroom storage solution, which is ideal for my limited closet storage space, that I had to make sure I had enough space for ALL of my ink pads to be stored in this fashion.

Now all four of these organizers will be hung in my craft studio/office closet and I’ll have super easy access to my inks without their storage container taking up space on my work area when I’m creating.

(In case you’re wondering, my closet is just to the left of my work table.)

And, the larger pockets in this organizer are perfect for my other Ranger ink pads, or even inking tools – see below.

Unique Storage Ideas – even more ideas for your craft room and craft supplies!

How many of you have enjoyed our Unique Storage Ideas posts?

How about our previous finds from field trips to Hobby Lobby?

Are you forever on the hunt for something “unique” for your craft room or art studio?

Perhaps a single item to add character to your space, or a way to inspire you to want to spend more time there?

Or, maybe you’d like to add a special ‘collection’ that not only looks cool, but serves a purpose?

Well, we’ve got more craftroom organization ideas for you!

We’re sharing even more non-traditional craftroom organization and storage solutions, solutions that may just help you love your creative space even more and make you more productive when you’re in it.

How do great storage ideas help with productivity?

When you love your space, you want to be in it – it’s as simple as that!

And when you can easily find – and put away – your tools and supplies, you have more time for creating and will most certainly enjoy the process more.

The following craftroom organization items were spotted at several Austin, Texas Hobby Lobby stores I recently visited – we hope you enjoy checking them out!

Perhaps they’re just what you’re looking for and you can find them at your local store.

Or, maybe they’ll simply spark something in you, a way to re-purpose something you have on hand, or to motivate you to start hunting for a similar solution, one that’s ideal for what you need to organize and store!

Now we know there’ll be at least a few of you who don’t have a Hobby Lobby near you, or who may not be able to find these exact items at your local store.

Please keep in mind that we’re sharing these simply to give you ideas about how you might be able to make use of unique storage items and furnishings that are not specific to craft room and/or crafting supply organization, items that could make organizing and storing your crafty stash more fun!

And if you do have a local store that carries one or more of these items, and it’d/they’d be ideal for your needs, well that’s even better.

One thing I do want to point out to those who DO have a Hobby Lobby near them is that many of these items have been marked WAY down since the day I took these photos.

Yes, that means they may be a bit harder to come by, but if your store does carry them, they’re likely also super reasonable now.

And that’s a good thing, right?

We sure love great deals!

Along with each craftroom organization and storage item, I’m sharing my thoughts on the best uses for that type of unit, as well as characteristics to look for in products and furnishings you might come across where you live (and bargain hunt!).

I’ve also shared potential ‘cons,’ if any exist, to using these.

And, because we had a request from one of our readers to include the prices when we share items such as these, the prices are included when it was possible to include the price tag in the photo (enlarge the images to see the price tags more clearly).

Remember though that many of these prices have been recently reduced…some quite significantly!

And now, let’s take a look at each organizing and storage idea and chat about how YOU might put it to use in YOUR space…

Option One: White Desk

This unit may not be as unique as those that follow, but I love the frame and the built-in riser and cubbies.

Don’t you?

This is ideal for someone who works from home and doesn’t need a lot of desk space, for cardmakers and scrapbookers, and also for us planner girls.

It appears to be well-built, and with that white finish, it’s sure to fit into most any decor.

Potential Cons:
If you’re into mixed-media and art journaling, then you’d definitely have to protect the surface when you’re creating (or perhaps add a glass top, but that would be pricey).

Price: $230.00 USD

Thoughts on this desk? 

Option Two: Numbered Metal Drawers Unit

This unit is ideal for storing dies, embossing folders, small stamp sets, or even numbered items (such as chipboard or acrylic pieces) and the strong wooden top makes it ideal for hosting small machines like the Cuttlebug.

This would also be simple to alter if you wanted it all one color or wanted to paint the drawers various colors that match your creative space.

Potential Cons:
I don’t think I would store delicate items like ribbons or fabrics in this unit as the metal is distressed and could damage those items.

This unit might also rust over time (although you could apply a clear coat to it and that should prevent rusting).

Price: Unknown (I tried to capture the price tag, on the left, but it kept flipping off to the side – argh!)

Is this one for you –
why or why not?

Option Three: Colorful Metal Drawers Unit

This unit is ideal for crafters who like a lot of color or who want to be able to slide out a drawer and take it to where they’re creating.

Of course, just like with the last unit (above), it could easily be altered to match most any decor.

You could easily store fabrics and sewing or quilting supplies in the drawers, hang rulers and scissors from the sides and place a machine on the top so it’s always handy.

This would also work well for machines like the Cricut and Silhouette and Brother Scan’NCut, or the Cuttlebug or Spellbinders Platinum machine, with room in the drawers for most of the supplies that accompany those machines.

Mats could easily be hung from the sides, keeping them handy and flat.

Additionally, paper pads or alphabet sticker sheets could be easily and neatly stored in the bins.

And finally, you could store folded or rolled fabric in the drawers (as long as the unit was away from harsh light or pets).

Potential Cons:
Like with the previous unit (above), this unit is metal so rusting is a long-term possibility, but this unit appears to have a strong, clear coat over it so I don’t think you’d have to worry about it for some time.

You’d probably want to add something soft (like felt) to the bottoms of the legs as they are a bit rough.

Price: $125.00 USD

Who’s up for adding some color to their space?

Or, would you like to have this, but paint it?

Option Four: Locker Drawers & Basket Unit

This one’s a papercrafters dream!

Even if you had to paint and/or clear coat this unit, it’s got some pretty ideal storage.

That tall basket is perfect for rolls of specialty or decorative or flower-making paper; the smaller, upper bins would work well for small paper pads; and, the three lower, left-hand drawers would work well for storing misc. types of paper (watercolor pads, palette paper, etc.)

I don’t think I’d store fabrics in this unit, but notions, rulers, scissors and rotary cutters, cutting mats, etc. might fit well, with room on the top for a machine or two.

Potential Cons:
Same as with the previous two units, the metal may rust over time if not well coated.

Price: $147.00 USD

Any papercrafters drooling over this one?

Option Five: Multi-Colored Drawers w/ A Variety of Hardware Unit

This unit was calling my name – it looks almost exactly like one I have except that mine is all black rather than being multi-colored.

I love the quirkiness of this storage unit and could find a million things to store in those cute drawers!

In my unit, I’ve stored the following: small office supplies, binder rings of all sizes, jewelry findings (in tiny zipper bags), metal items for mixed media projects, sugar beads, iTop parts, rubber bands and large journal bands, empty tins and small containers, and extra zipper bags in various sizes.

This would be ideal for storing fabric squares and bundles, sewing and quilting notions, drawing tools, pens and pencils, clay and clay tools, jewelry-making supplies and tools, etc.

Potential Cons:
Some of the drawers were a bit tough to slide in and out.

Price: Unknown (again, the dang tag wouldn’t stay in place so I could capture the price, but I recall that it was around $125)

What do you think –

Option Six: Lockers on Wheels Unit

This unit would work for so many applications!

I love that it looks a bit like old school lockers, provides a lot of storage space behind each door (and a label holder on the front of each one), has a large top that’s likely to hold up well and has wheels.

I can envision storing small bolts of fabric, paper pads, or containers of supplies for most any crafting endeavor in the ‘lockers.’

Potential Cons:
A couple of the doors were a tiny bit sticky (but use and/or a little WD40 would likely take care of that).

Price: $210.00 USD

Is this ‘industrial’ look more your style?

Option Seven: Industrial Shelving Unit

These also made me swoon!

I love the rivets and the styling of these, and they provide a lot of space for storing your most used (read: need to be readily accessible) supplies and tools.

I like how tall the open space is between the bottom shelf and the shelf above it – perfect for 12 x 12 scrapbooks!

Potential Cons:
Because of the coating that’s on them, you might not want to store ‘delicate’ items on these shelves without putting them in containers first.

Price: $84.00 USD

Another industrial-looking storage unit –
yay or nay?

Option Eight: Metal Stands

These three are equally attractive options for storing tools and supplies.

The outer two are ideal for smaller, lightweight items (preferably in clear containers) and the center tiered basket is sturdy enough to hold heavier items.

Any of these could be painted if you wanted a color other than black, and the outer two are perfect for making use of tall, narrow spaces in your craft room, spaces that are currently unused.

Potential Cons:
The unit on the left might tip over if loaded heavily on top and lighter on the bottom (especially if positioned on carpeting).

All three of these could damage delicate materials (think papers, fabrics, ribbons, etc.) if the items aren’t stored in containers that fit into these units.

Price: $59.00-$69.00 USD

I love all three of these, but the center is my favorite –
how about you, what’s your favorite of these three?

Option Nine: Chicken Wire Display Box

This unit is ideal for paints, mediums, embossing powders, adhesives or even wood-mounted stamps.

And it would make a nice display case for jars of ribbon, washi rolls, buttons, etc.

And most importantly, it could be locked on the side to keep little ones’ fingers out and off your precious (or dangerous) supplies.

Potential Cons:
It’s made to be hung on a wall and would require some anchoring. And unless you have a shabby-chic style creative space, you’d probably need to invest in painting it.

Price: Unknown (sadly, there was only one of these and it wasn’t marked)

Who’s fawning over this one?

Option Ten: Black, White & Gold Desk Organizer

O.K., I know this is quite a bit different from the previous units, but I fell in love and had to share it!

I’m totally loving black and white and gold and looked at this for storing my personal planner (also black and white and gold) and accompanying tools and supplies.

It was located in the stationery section, in case you go hunting for it.

The larger section (on the right) is perfect for holding one or more planners and/or a planner and paper pad; the front cubby could hold clips and other bits and bobs, or small acrylic or wood-mounted stamp sets; the center section on the left would be perfect for pens and pencils, or more stamp sets (I have acrylic sets that are tall and narrow); and, the back section on the left is ideal for rulers or narrow, acrylic stamp sets. 

Potential Cons:
It is made of covered chipboard so it’s not likely to hold up a long time (but then, we’ll probably be on to a new, fun color scheme by the time it wears out, right? ;)).

Price: $20.00 USD

Any black, white and gold and/or planner peeps in the house?

Has this got your heart fluttering?

Option Eleven: Distressed Divided Box

This last unit is great on so many levels if you’re a lover of vintage items.

First, it looks vintage, but is quite sturdy.

Second, it’s a neutral color and would fit in most anywhere with or without any changes to the finish.

And third, it’s great hanging up or laying flat.

I’d love to see it used laying flat for sewing and quilting notions or for holding wood veneers or chipboard pieces for papercrafting, or hanging up and showing off a crafter’s collection…of anything!

Into painting, mixed media or art journaling?

Why not use it for your brushes, spatulas, paints and mediums?

Potential Cons:
The wood is a bit rough and may need a bit of sanding if what you store in it could be damaged.

Price: $39

And now for the mobile storage solution we mentioned…

I’m sure many of you have heard about the Raskog Cart from IKEA, right?

It appears to be a very popular item for homes and craft spaces alike.

And well, like many crafters, I just HAD to have one!

What am I using it for?

Well, I initially bought it to house my pocket scrapbooking supplies.

But, I soon found it was not such an ideal solution for my pocket scrapbooking stash (or at least not for the easy retrieval of said stash) and it was ‘re-purposed’ for another type of supply, a supply I’m excited to now use more often!

Meet my mixed-media tools and supply storage unit!

I LOVE the way this unit houses my mixed-media tools and supplies and, most importantly, how I can easily roll it over to my work area and quickly grab what I need for my current ‘messy’ project.

Because this cart is so easy to move, and tools and supplies are so easy to access, and return when I’m finished with them (important!), my mixed-media supplies are getting much more use – yay!

Quick and easy, that’s my motto!

Here’s what this unit looks like, fully loaded, from the side:

Note that I have my Ranger Distress Paints stored in paint bottle storage rolls (made by Plaid) that are zip-tied to the sides of the unit, and my brayers hooked on via zip-ties as well – I’m definitely maximizing EVERY bit of storage capacity available!

And the reason this unit was a must is that it’s very narrow, essential for me since the space where it has to live is also very narrow.

Craft Storage Idea: Solution for 6″ x 6″ Paper Pads or Fabric Bundles
Craft Storage doesn’t have to come from a craft product retailer!

Today’s post centers around finding organizing and storage solutions for 6″ x 6″ papers, paper pads, and folded fabrics or fabric bundles.

But, this storage solution is NOT a craft storage item, nor an item found at craft product retailers.

It may, however, be found at your local home organization store.

As background, I’m a frequent ‘shopper’ at home organization stores and craft product retailers, and I usually take weekly ‘field trips’ to my local retailers in search of items that I need for my own products and supplies, and/or which we can recommend to you.

And in the interest of full transparency, when you work as a solopreneur, and work from a home office, getting out at least once a week is important to long-term sanity!

But even if I worked in a corporate office, I’d still be checking out the latest in organization and storage products – it’s my thing and a major aspect of what we provide our Craft Storage Ideas audience…you!

Now, please note the ‘ ‘ around the word ‘shopper’ above – I am NOT making purchases every week, but rather searching for what’s out there, and most importantly, looking for items that can be re-purposed for craft product and supply storage.

And that brings me to today’s find and recommendations…

Meet the InterDesign Bath Binz!

This clear acrylic container, a container which measures 8″W x 8″D x 6″H, is both sturdy and stylish.

And for those who need to see what you own, or need storage that’s portable, this is likely ideal!

This bin has handles (openings) both front and back, making it easy to grab it and take it to where you’re working, and slide it into and out of shelves and cubbies.

And because the bin is square, it doesn’t matter whether you place your items in a forward-facing manner or side-facing manner.

In the image above you can see that I’m storing my 6 ” x 6″ paper pads in a forward-facing manner, with the front handle (opening) facing forward as well.

I need to be able to quickly and easily access my collection of pads, grab what I need and slide the rest of the collection back in place, or bring my whole collection to my crafting table.

The pads will also fit in a side-facing manner, as shown above.

The front handle makes this access and return process easy, and this bin fits well, on top of another container of 6″ x 6″ paper pads, in one of the cubbies of my IKEA Expedit storage shelving.

I love that the bin is clear so I can see what’s inside of it without opening a lid, and the dual handles means it’s easy to tote along if I’m creating in another space or at a craft event.

Into sewing and/or quilting?

Consider storing your smaller pieces of fabric (or folded remnants) in these bins.

‘Flats’ of fabric fit well and can easily be organized by theme, color, type, etc.

Grab some dividers (store-bought or homemade) and add them between your fabric pieces to make finding what you need even quicker and easier.

Again, we think this is a super versatile product, one that’s not just perfect for the bathroom or other areas of your home, but for YOUR craft, sewing or quilting room as well!

A word of caution:
Because this bin is clear and not completely enclosed, items stored in it could be subject to fading and getting dusty, or getting covered in pet hair if you have animals.

We recommend storing these bins inside a closed storage unit (e.g., my Expedit has a curtain covering the front so light isn’t entering the cubbies and there is very little dust getting on my paper pads) or, at the very least, keeping them away from bright light sources (e.g., sunlight) and away from where your beloved pets hang out.

Craft Storage Ideas: Does Your Creative Space Help or Hinder You?
Creativity comes from many places, including where you create – is your creative space an asset or a hinderance?

I saw this Economist article on famous artists’ spaces and thought y’all might enjoy reading it.
The Economist: Artists’ Creative Spaces

And, not only reading it, but thinking about whether or not your space enhances creativity, or diminishes it.

Could this quote from the above article describe YOUR space: “These spaces feed into a mythology of the workspace: the artist is not just a creator, but is surrounded by beauty so that he may create it.”

Or, is this a more apt description of your creative space? “Today’s studios are far less opulent: Jeff Koons’s studio features numerous Lysol cleaning spray bottles for polishing and fluorescent-hued cartoon paintings of a very different aesthetic era.”

For me, my ‘spaces’ are essential to what takes place in them.

My kitchen must provide me with a logical layout that makes cooking easy and enjoyable.

My bedroom must feel ‘relaxed’ and be free of ‘alert’ colors and electronics like TV.

My office must be free of clutter and have plenty of ‘spreading’ space for paperwork.

And my creative space has to not just be super functional in terms of where items are stored and how easily I can access and retrieve them, but free of clutter and filled with items that bring me joy and/or inspire creativity.

The images above show my creative | office space from 2005 – we were in a temporary rental that just happened to have walls painted the same color as those in my office in the home we’d just sold.

I was thrilled that my ‘treasures’ fit right in and that the space met all of my requirements!

How about you – is the physical space in which you create important? 

And if so, what’s most important to you in terms of form and function?

We’d love to learn more about your creative space – whether it’s a rolling tote you only access while creating at crafting events; a single rolling cart or bag you take from room to room as your mate and/or family engage in activities in those spaces; a dedicated space in a multi-purpose area of your home; or, a full-blown crafting space, a space that’s your and yours alone.

The next Go-Organize products I added to my space are the white Peg Boards.

The Peg Boards come in packs of three and make great use of otherwise unused vertical space – with the included mounting hardware and easy-to-follow instructions, you can quickly and easily hang them from a wall, or from the side of a desk, work surface or cabinet (like shown below).

How cool is this mounting idea?

Otherwise unused space is instantly made useful!

I think this is an ideal solution for kids’ craft areas too, don’t you?

Hang tools on the pegboard and store the supplies inside a combination of any of the Go-Organize craft storage cubes – everything is easy to access and very little space is needed.

I have one Peg Board panel on the wall behind my work area, and I just removed a few decorative items from that same wall so I can add another Peg Board panel to that space – yup, I like them that much!

The Peg Board panel that’s currently hanging up is home to my paper crimper, a clear cutting guide, a hot glue gun, a Dymo Label Maker and heat tools (and as soon as I get some more hooks, I’ll be adding a few more tools to this space).

I plan to use the new, second panel for hanging my many stencils (stay tuned for a share on how this turns out!).

And I may add the third panel from my 3-pack to that same wall and use it to keep new papercrafting embellishments front and center (so I don’t forget to use them!), or hang it on the back wall inside my craft room closet for hanging up my embroidery hoops and other challenging-to-store tools.

Is papercrafting your thing? Hang packs of your newest embellishments from the hooks so you don’t forget to use them!

Prefer quilting and/or sewing? Think about using these Peg Boards for hanging your scissors, rotary cutting tools, quilting rulers and templates, tape measures, etc. close to where you quilt or sew.

Jewelry-making and beading more your crafty pleasure? You might want to hang your tools on one of these hung just above your ‘bench’ so everything is within reach, but not taking up valuable work area.

Got a thing for needle arts? Consider hanging your floss collection from a panel, reminding you of all the beautiful colors you have at your disposal!

Whatever kind of crafting you’re into, we bet you can find a use for one (or many!) of these handy panels.

I need a spot to keep all of my small liquids, sprays and powders (the ones I use most often) within reach when I’m creating.

These shelves, which come in packs of two, will soon be home to a bunch of different liquid adhesives, as well as dimensional products, artist mediums, and embossing powders, and my beloved Archival Spray and Goo-Gone.

After taking these shelves out of their packaging, my mind was racing with other ideas for stocking them – they’re perfect for storing sewing notions, beads and jewelry findings, buttons and other craft project embellishments, and as a display shelf for your favorite rubber stamps, small creations made by you and other crafters, and cards from your crafty friends.

I’ll be sharing pictures of my filled shelves as soon as I get them hung and I’d love to hear your ideas for using these!
