Today I want to share a chalkboard technique card featuring tulips and daffodils using the Spellbinders Tulips & Daffodils Press + Foil Plate by Yana Smakula.

I didn’t pick up the coordinating stencils in time (they were already sold out), but I really wanted to start playing with this set right away. So instead of waiting, I went ahead and colored everything by hand — and honestly, I think it worked out even better for this particular technique..

The chalkboard technique used to be everywhere years ago, and while it’s not as trendy now, I still think it’s such a classic and beautiful look

CREATING THE CHALKBOARD BACKGROUND

I started by pressing the floral design onto a black cardstock panel using Spellbinders Opaque White Hot Foil with my Glimmer Hot Foil System and Platinum 6 Machine.

This was actually my first time using the white foil, and I was genuinely impressed. It gives that crisp white embossed look, but smoother and cleaner — no stray powder, no texture inconsistencies.

For the cardstock, I used Simon Says Stamp 100lb Black Cardstock, since it has a slight tooth to it, which works really well for pencil coloring.

Paper “tooth” just means that the surface isn’t completely smooth — it has a slight texture that helps grab things like colored pencils or pastels.

COLORING WITH PENCILS

Since I didn’t have stencils, I colored the florals using Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils.

Before adding any color, I first applied a layer of white pencil. This helps the colors show up much brighter on black cardstock instead of looking muted.

ADDING THE CHALKBOARD EFFECT

To create that soft chalky look, I used Altenew Cloud White Pigment Ink.

I lightly dabbed a paper napkin into the ink and gently swiped it across the panel. This adds that dusty, imperfect chalk effect and really enhances the overall look.

LAYERING THE CARD

I trimmed the panel to 3.75″ x 4.5″ and adhered it onto a slightly rotated yellow panel of the same size. Then I mounted everything onto a white card base, again with a slight rotation.

This creates that casually layered look, like pieces of paper placed on top of each other without trying to align them perfectly.

SENTIMENT & FINISHING TOUCHES

For the sentiment, I used a press plate sentiment (now discontinued), but similar looks can be achieved with sets like Fancy Sentiment Strips Press Plate & Die Set or Always And Forever Sentiment Strips Press Plate & Die Set.

I used opaque black foil for the sentiment, which turned out beautifully crisp.

To finish the card, I added a few Altenew Milky Way Gem Sparkles for a subtle touch of shine.

I really enjoyed revisiting the chalkboard technique for this card — it’s one of those looks that never really goes out of style for me. And coloring these florals by hand ended up being such a relaxing process.

I started with Papertrey Ink Paper – Classic Kraft Cardstock and die cut a panel using Ornate Nesting Die Set. I blended Mocha Fresh Dye Ink around the edges and lightly toward the center, then sprinkled the panel with water and let it sit for a few seconds before blotting it off to create subtle texture on the kraft background.

For the florals, I used Build-A-Garden: Japanese Anemone. I stamped the images onto white cardstock and heat embossed them using white embossing powder. This creates a subtle outline that helps guide the coloring while still keeping the look soft.

I then used the coordinating stencils from the same set to color the images. For the flowers, I used shades from the Red Cosmos Fresh Dye Ink Bundle, and for the leaves I used Frayed Leaf Fresh Dye Ink. The stencil layering makes it really easy to build up color and dimension without needing any detailed coloring.

Once everything was colored and die cut, I arranged the florals over the background panel and adhered them using Instant Dimension Foam Tape to add some dimension.

For the sentiment, I used the One-Go Birthday Stamp & Die Bundle. I stamped the greeting in black for contrast and added it to the center of the arrangement.

To finish the card, I added a few Red Cosmos Enamel Dots for a subtle pop of shine and color.

This is a really simple way to combine a neutral background with soft florals, and the added texture from the ink blending and water helps keep the background from feeling flat.

I’m sharing today a dimensional floral card featuring the floral beauty of the Craft-A-Flower: Cape Marguerite Die Set, complemented by a textured background achieved using a Hosta 3D Embossing Folder.

CRAFT-A-FLOWER: CAPE MARGUERITE DIE SET

I started off by creating the layered die-cut flowers using the Craft-A-Flower: Cape Marguerite Die Set, New Purple, and Green Meadows Gradient Cardstock Sets.

After die-cutting all the layers, I assembled the flowers by stacking and adhering the corresponding layers.

Additionally, I added some shading to the floral elements using Woodless Pencils. To be honest, I made this decision after already assembling the flowers just because I wanted to add more interest to them. And, of course, I didn’t want to disassemble them or start over to add coloring. Opting for Woodless Pencils as a coloring medium was the best choice in this case.

I used a relatively small Artists’ Watercolor Brush #1 to color. I had it slightly wet, picked up pigment from a pencil and added it to flower petals and leaves.

The Lavender Fields and Ultramarine pencils were used to color the flowers, and Shadow Creek pencil was used to color the leaves.

The gradient cardstock itself is not meant for coloring and wetting; it could flatten the embossing of the die-cut elements which dies of the Craft-A-Flower: Cape Marguerite Die Set created. So using as less water as possible was the key. I made sure my brush almost dry, just wet enough to pick up pigment from pencils.

HOSTA 3D EMBOSSING FOLDER

After creating the floral elements, I moved on to creating the background. First, I embossed a Solar White Cardstock panel using the Hosta 3D Embossing Folder. Next, I tore its top edge to add some interest to it.

I adhered the die-cut elements onto the panel, forming the floral cluster. I followed by adding tiny purple splatters onto the floral grouping and background. I used a wet brush and Lavender Fields Woodless Pencil to create splatters.

The panel was foam-mounted onto a purple card base using black foam tape.

I used the Thank You Builder Stamp Set and Ultraviolet Fresh Dye Ink to make the sentiment label. The sentiment was stamped onto a Solar White Cardstock stripe and popped onto the card, finishing it off.

How about adding some cuteness to your day? The Little Safari animals are extremely cute! They’re also easy and fun to be colored using the matching coloring stencil. And of course, they could be colored using any other media.

Being on the large side with bold outlines, I believe they are suitable for little crafters as well.

First, I created the animal elements, by stamping them using the Jet Black Fresh Dye Ink and then coloring using the matching stencils.

I used the Warm Sunshine, Caramel Toffee, Paper Bag, and Rouge Fresh Dye Inks to color the lion and giraffe. Misty Morning, Cloudy Sky, Nimbus Crisp Dye Inks, and Rouge Fresh Dye Ink were used for the elephant.

After the coloring was finished, I die-cut all the cuties using the coordinating Little Safari Die Set.

I made a very soft pastel rainbow background using Frosty Pink, Buttercream, Sea Glass, and Water Hyacinth Fresh Dye Inks.

First, I blended them onto a white panel in the listed order. Next, I applied the Playful Leaves Stencil on top of the panel and blended the same inks through the stencil.

This quite settled background is not very visible since it’s pretty much covered by other characters. But it adds an interesting touch to the card.

I die-cut a white frame using a die from the Picture Frame Die Set and adhered it flat onto the panel. The panel in turn was adhered onto a white card base.

Next, the animals were adhered onto the card.

I made a sentiment label by white embossing an encouraging phrase from the Little Safari Stamp Set onto a Jet Black Cardstock. The label was popped up onto the card, which finished it off.

MONOCHROMATIC FLORAL BACKGROUND

For the background, I used the Papertrey Ink Effortless Beauties Stamp Set and stamped the floral design onto Papertrey Ink Paper Basics – Rustic White Cardstock.

I went with different shades of green for a fresh monochromatic look, but this idea can easily be changed to any color palette. You can use pinks, purples, blues, or even a multicolor floral background if that fits your style better. Patterned paper can also be a great substitute if you want to speed things up.

DIMENSIONAL MOM SENTIMENT

For the main sentiment, I created a large dimensional MOM word using the Altenew Bold Alphabet Die Set and the Altenew Caps Bold Alphabet Die Set.

I first die-cut the word MOM directly from the stamped background panel. Then I die-cut each letter multiple times (about 6 layers) from dark green cardstock, stacked them together with liquid glue, and inserted them back into their corresponding negative spaces.

This inlaid stacked technique adds a lot of visual interest — you get dimension, but also that subtle “hidden” look where the sentiment feels like part of the background rather than just sitting on top of it.

SENTIMENT LABEL AND FINISHING TOUCHES

To accompany the MOM sentiment, I added a small black label with a white sentiment. A phrase like “Today We Celebrate You” from the Altenew One-Go Birthday Stamp & Die Bundle or “I Love You Infinitely” from the Altenew One-Go: Words & Banners would work beautifully for this type of design.

I also added several white crystals as accents and chose a colored card base to tie everything together with the green floral background.

QUICK MOTHER’S DAY CARD IDEA

This design is a great last-minute Mother’s Day card idea. You can stamp your own floral background, use patterned paper, add a dimensional MOM sentiment, and finish it with a small sentiment label.

Today I’m sharing a card where I played with contrast — pairing a bold background with a softer floral element. I really like how this combination helps the focal point stand out while still keeping the design vibrant.

The focal point floral element was made using the Craft-A-Flower: Japanese Anemone. I die-cut all the elements of it out of Solar White Cardstock and used ink blending to color them with inks from the Blushberry Bliss, Sun-Kissed Delights, and Jade Dreams Fresh Dye Ink Bundles. To do ink blending, I used both Mini and Micro Ink Blending Brushes.

After that, I assembled the Japanese Anemone flowers by adhering their layers.

To make the background, I used the Modern Leaf Background Bundle.

First, I created the “color cardstock” by swiping the Golden Honeycomb Fresh Dye Ink along a white panel.

Next, I impressed the Modern Leaf design into it using the Modern Leaf Press Plate and Melted Butterscotch Fresh Dye Ink. Using the Modern Leaf Stencil Set I colored the leaf design with the Amber Glaze and Melted Butterscotch Fresh Dye Inks.

Additionally, I added some ink blending around the panel edges using the Melted Butterscotch Fresh Dye Ink.

The panel was foam-mounted onto a white card base using the Instant Dimension Foam Tape. Followed by adhering the die-cut Japanese Anemone cluster on top.

The sentiment white-embossed on a black panel was made using the One-Go: Words & Banners and popped onto the card.

Red Cosmos and Summer Afternoon Enamel Dots finished off the card.

Recently, I was going through my computer and organizing old files, and I realized just how many card photos I’ve never shared. It was honestly a mix of feelings—some designs made me cringe a little (and I’m kind of glad they stayed hidden ), but others still felt worth sharing.

So I thought—why not give those “forgotten” cards a moment? I’ll be posting some of them from time to time, especially the ones I still enjoy looking at and that might inspire someone else along the way

I have a soft spot for vintage-inspired designs, and this card came together as a warm, cozy take on a classic frame composition. The muted tones, subtle texture, and delicate botanical elements create a calm, almost nostalgic feel—perfect for a timeless birthday card.

To build the background, I stamped the frame from the Antique Wishes Stamp Set using Fine Linen Dye Ink. After stamping, I used the coordinating Antique Wishes Die Set to die-cut the frame and mounted it onto a panel of Paper Basics – Rustic White Cardstock, which adds a subtle texture and enhances the vintage feel.

I love how this soft tone creates a gentle, aged look—just enough contrast to define the frame without making it too bold. It keeps the overall design light while still giving it that classic, timeless touch

For the focal point, I created a simple arrangement using a stamped vase (you can substitute your preferred vase design here) and layered sprigs. The branches were stamped and die-cut using Sprigs Sprays Stamp Set and Sprigs Sprays Die Set. I kept the color palette neutral with brown tones and added small white-embossed accents to mimic tiny blossoms or berries, giving the arrangement a bit of texture and dimension.

To add more vintage feel to the vase and tie it with other elements of the card I white-embossed the top layer of it.

The vase anchors the design nicely and keeps everything grounded, while the vertical lines of the sprigs draw the eye upward, balancing the rectangular frame.

To finish the card, I added a simple birthday sentiment stamped in brown.

Overall, this design is all about subtle layers and quiet details. It’s one of those cards that doesn’t rely on bold colors or busy elements, but instead lets texture, composition, and soft tones do all the work

I hope you’re doing well. For today’s card, I wanted to play with a monochromatic green palette and pair it with crisp white embossing. The combination feels fresh and clean, while still having enough contrast thanks to the layered florals and the darker sentiment.

I started by stamping the floral images from the Nostalgic Florals Stamp Set onto a gray cardstock panel using embossing ink and heat embossing them with Pure White Crisp Embossing Powder. The raised lines make it easy to add color while keeping everything neat.

For coloring, I used shades from the Green Valley Fresh Dye Ink Bundle, blending Firefly and Grass Field for a soft gradient. After die-cutting the images with the coordinating Nostalgic Florals Die Set, I arranged them into a full cluster for dimension.

The background is lightly stamped in white to keep it subtle, and I finished the card with a sentiment from the One-Go Birthday Greetings Stamp Set, cut with the coordinating die for a bold contrast.

I used the Pink Star Tulip Layering Die Set as the main character of my card. A beautiful large open flower can be easily created using this set! And just one flower is totally enough to make up the whole card.

Needless to say, assembling it is extremely easy, thanks to the Key-Hole System. You simply die-cut all elements, stack them aligning the hole, and you have an awesome flower on hand!

I die-cut the Pink Star Tulip petals out of Crafty Necessities: Frosty Pink Cardstock and added simple alcohol marker coloring using the Cosmic Garden Alcohol Markers to create shadows. For the leaves, I used Forest Glades Cardstock and enhanced them with shading as well.

ADDING AN EMBOSSED BACKGROUND

This flower is strong enough to be the only focal point on a card. I took it just a step further by embossing the background panel with the Motif Tile 3D Embossing Folder. Choosing colored cardstock instead of white instantly elevates the design with almost no extra effort.

I used the same cardstock for the panel as I did for the leaves, so everything ties together nicely.

USING LEFTOVER DIE-CUTS

To separate the colored elements, I placed a white ornate panel between the flower and the embossed background. It was made earlier using a die from the Ornate Nesting Die Set. I often keep these inner die-cuts from previous projects, and they come in handy for designs like this.

Both the embossed panel and the ornate panel were foam-mounted using the Instant Dimension Foam Tape. Adding dimension is an effortless way to bring more interest to your card.

After adhering the Pink Star Tulip onto the card, I added a white-embossed-on-black sentiment label made using the One-Go: Words & Banners Bundle. I really like the soft wavy shape of this banner.

To finish the card, I added several Forest Trail Enamel Dots.

This card came together in a very simple and enjoyable way, and I still really like how it turned out even now.
