I started with the background, using the Winter Swirls Die set to create my own embossed pattern. Instead of using a cover plate die, I arranged individual swirl and snowflake dies in different areas of a white cardstock panel and embossed them rather than die-cutting the shapes. This gave me a custom white-on-white background with a subtle winter pattern that adds interest without distracting from the main design.

For the focal point, I created an ornament-shaped vase using the Vase Collection 5 Mini Stamp Set and coordinating Vase Collection 5 Die. I die-cut the ornament shape from kraft cardstock and used the solid ornament stamp to add white embossing on top. To give it a slightly weathered, rustic appearance, I stamped the image with clear embossing ink and covered it with white embossing powder. Before heat embossing, I used a fluffy brush to remove some of the powder, leaving uneven coverage rather than a perfectly solid embossed surface. This simple technique gave the ornament a lovely aged, textured look.

I filled the ornament vase with festive greenery and red berries created using the Sprigs & Sprays: Holiday Stamp Set and coordinating Sprigs & Sprays: Holiday Die. I also added some evergreen branches around the bottom of the ornament to create a fuller arrangement and bring more natural-looking texture to the design.

To finish the card, I added a white-embossed Christmas sentiment on a black cardstock strip. The dark background makes the greeting stand out against the softer colors of the arrangement.

I foam-mounted the finished panel onto a Classic Kraft Cardstock card base, leaving a visible kraft border that complements the rustic look of the ornament while adding a little extra dimension to the card.

I really like the combination of the subtle embossed background, weathered ornament, and traditional Christmas greenery. It’s a festive design with plenty of detail, but the overall color palette keeps everything nicely balanced.

Today, I want to share another holiday card featuring birds. This design features a couple of tit birds in a serene winter scene.

In my culture (I’m Ukrainian), tit birds are cherished symbols of the winter holidays, much like cardinal birds are in the USA. So, when I saw the recently released Sweet Garden Bird Die Set, I knew I had to use it to create a pair of these gorgeous feathered friends for a festive card.

LET’S MAKE THE BIRDS FOR THE HOLIDAY CARD!

The Sweet Garden Bird Die Set allows you to craft one left-facing bird using its layering dies. To create a companion right-facing bird, I flipped the die-cuts by adhering each layer back-side up. While the second bird lacks some of the debossed details due to the inversion, I think it turned out well enough to complement the design.

Flipping die-cuts does come with its challenges, and I’d love to share a couple of tricks I used to achieve a polished result.

First, the underside of a die-cut often picks up texture from the die-cutting machine’s bottom plate, which can make it look rough. To avoid this, I placed a piece of thin printer paper beneath my cardstock while die-cutting. This kept the surface smooth.

Second, flipped die-cuts can have slightly uneven edges. To fix this, I ran the die-cuts through the die-cutting machine again, sandwiched between two paper shims. This flattened the edges beautifully and made the pieces more uniform.

For the birds, I used Crafty Necessities Cardstock in the shades Moor, Fresh Lemon, Tide Blue, Starlight, Desert Night, and Jet Black. These colors brought the birds to life with a striking and natural look.

DESIGNING THE WINTER SCENE

The wintry background began with a panel of Crafty Necessities Misty Morning Cardstock, which I framed using white die-cuts from the thinnest dies in the Intertwining Leaves Die Set. The delicate white border added an ethereal touch to the card, perfectly capturing the quiet beauty of winter.

For the branch, I turned to the Berry Branch Die Set, using Dark Chocolate and Heart Beat Crafty Necessities Cardstock for the base and berries. To make adhering these intricate die-cuts easier, I applied Double-Sided Adhesive Sheets to the back of the cardstock before die-cutting. This technique saved a lot of time and ensured clean and secure placement.

The berries got a bit of extra attention: I sprinkled them with sparkling embossing powder for a frosty, festive effect. Instead of using a full branch, I strategically cut one die-cut into three smaller sections, arranging them around the birds to fill empty spaces. This way, I could stretch one branch across the design without wasting any parts hidden behind the birds—a trick I often use to maximize intricate die-cuts.

ASSEMBLING THE HOLIDAY CARD

Once the branches and birds were in place, I foam-mounted the entire panel onto a white card base using Instant Dimension Foam Tape. The added height gave the design depth and brought the elements to life.

For the sentiment, I chose a stamp from the Joyous Sentiments Stamp Set. I stamped it onto white cardstock with Ruby Red Fresh Dye Ink, fussy-cut it with Fine Blade Scissors, and adhered it to the card using foam squares. The bright red sentiment added a cheerful holiday touch.

To finish the card, I sprinkled in some Iridescent Gem Sparkles for a bit of wintery shimmer. Combined with the sparkle of the berries, these gems added just the right amount of magic to the design.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This card captures everything I love about winter and the holidays—cozy scenes, nature-inspired elements, and a touch of sparkle. It was such a joy to combine the tit birds, symbolic of Ukrainian winters, with festive details like the shimmering berries and intricate branches.

There are several types of images that are kryptonite for me. I can never have enough of those, and every new set gets me excited. I’m sure many of you have a list of such. i.e. I have a soft spot and am always excited about feathers, sunflowers, poinsettias, fall leaves, and cardinals, to name a few. The latter (cardinal) is the element that plays the main role in the holiday card I’m sharing today.

CHEERFUL HOLIDAY CARD WITH ADORABLE CARDINALS

I used the Cardinal Love  LayeringDie Set to create a couple of adorable cardinals for my set. Needless to say, I used the new Crafty Necessities Cardstock to die cut the elements for my holiday card. Specifically, I used the Sand Dunes, Crimson, Velvet, and Jet Black for the cardinals. Some cardinal elements have cool debossed design, which I brought out by blending Fresh Dye Inks in matching shades—Crimson and Velvet.

After die-cutting all the elements and adding shading, I assembled the birds by adhering their layers. It was both fun and easy, thanks to the Cardinal Love Die Set’s Key-Hole System, which makes layering the pieces a breeze.

I also made a branch using a die from the same set, die-cutting its elements out of Crafty Necessities Mocha and Dark Chocolate Cardstock and then gluing them together.

To decorate the branch and add more holiday vibes to the card, I also made a couple of berry branches using the Berry Branch Die Set and Crafty Necessities Crimson, Hunter Green, and Dark Chocolate Cardstock.

I added ink blending to the berry and leaves die-cuts the same way I did with cardinal layers, to highlight the debossed design. After that, I glued all the elements to assemble the branches.

With the background, I decided to go simple and just added some clouds to the top part of a white panel using the Cloud Scene Stencil and Sea Breeze Fresh Dye Ink.

I popped up the “main” branch onto the background panel and then decorated it with pieces of berry branches, which I cut into a couple of pieces each.

I often add splatters to my cards (probably more often than I care to admit, haha) and in this case it was almost obligatory to have some “snow” added to the scene. Which I did by splattering the Pure White Ink Spray onto the background and branches.

The background was foam-mounted onto a white card base using the Instant Dimension Foam Tape.

Next, I added the cardinals to the card. Followed by popping up the sentiment, which I die cut out of white and Crafty Necessities Velvet Cardstock using dies from the Timeless Sentiments Die Set: Holiday Edition.

To finish off this cheerful holiday card, I added several Emerald City Gem Sparkles.

The starting point for this card was the Spellbinders Daisy Shower Press Plate By Yana Smakula. And even though the flowers are technically daisies, I decided not to treat them as daisies at all.

Daisies make me think more of spring and summer, but the flowers in this design can also resemble asters or gerberas depending on how they’re colored. So I basically rebranded my daisies for fall. With bright reds and yellows combined with a more weathered background, they took on a completely different personality.

CREATING THE VINTAGE BETTERPRESS BACKGROUND

The Daisy Shower Press Plate is an interesting design because most of the plate is solid. The background gets inked while the flowers remain lighter, but the plate still adds all of the details within the petals and flower centers.

I didn’t want the background to be very dark or perfectly solid. I was going for something softer and more weathered, so I started by inking up the plate with the Altenew Lemon Ice Fresh Dye Ink from the Citrus Punch Fresh Dye Ink color family. Lemon Ice is one of the lightest yellows I have, which made it a good starting point. BetterPress plates can transfer quite a lot of color, and I wanted to keep this background light.

Next, I used Altenew Espresso Fresh Dye Ink, but instead of applying it directly from the ink pad, I picked it up with a blending tool and applied it selectively to the flower areas of the press plate. I wanted those petal and center details to be much darker than the Lemon Ice impression.

Of course, some Espresso ended up on the background around the flowers too. Normally that might be something I’d try to avoid, but here it actually worked perfectly with the rustic look I wanted. After that, I impressed a white panel with this two-color inked up plate by running it through my Platinum Die-Cutting Machine.

I then applied Lemon Ice Fresh Dye Ink over the entire plate again and made a second pass through the die-cutting machine. The idea was similar to ink blending: when you’re blending several colors, sometimes going back over an area with the lighter color helps soften the transition. This final yellow impression helped integrate some of that uneven brown around the flowers instead of leaving it looking like accidental stray ink.

Throughout this process, I kept both the plate and cardstock in exactly the same positions so all of the impressions would line up.

The result wasn’t perfectly clean—and that was exactly the point.

TURNING THE DAISIES INTO FALL FLOWERS

Once the pressed background was finished, I colored the flowers with the coordinating Spellbinders Daisy Shower Layering Stencil and Altenew Fresh Dye Inks.

I chose bright yellow and red for the flowers and even gave a couple of them a combination of yellow and red petals. For the reds, I used Coral Red and Cherry Sweet Fresh Dye Inks from the Carnival Magic Fresh Dye Ink color family.

The yellow flowers were colored with Fresh Lemon and Honey Drizzle Fresh Dye Inks from the Pocketful Of Sunshine Fresh Dye Ink color family.

For the foliage, I used Mossy Meadow and Green Opal Fresh Dye Inks.

For the flower centers, I used Rocky Shore and Mocha Fresh Dye Inks from the Coffee Break Fresh Dye Ink color family.

The stencil separates the different petals, but it doesn’t create multiple shading layers within each individual petal. I wanted a little more dimension, so I used two shades for each color. After applying the lighter ink, I came back with the darker shade and concentrated it mainly around the bases of the petals.

I used the Altenew Mini Blending Brush Set for the lighter shades and the Altenew Micro Blending Brush Set for the darker ones. The smaller tool made it easier to stay within those little areas, and it also gave me a more concentrated application of color. That small amount of shading made the flowers look much less flat without adding another complicated step.

ADDING MORE OF THE WEATHERED LOOK

After the stenciling was finished, I blended Mocha Fresh Dye Ink around the outside of the panel. Darkening the edges gave the background a more finished, aged appearance while keeping the center lighter and drawing the eye toward the flowers.

I also pressed some Espresso Fresh Dye Ink onto my work surface, diluted it with a little water, and splattered it over the panel with a brush.

At this point, the floral background could easily have been the entire card. There is already plenty happening in the design, and adding another floral element would probably have made it too busy.

But I have this thing where, even if I’ve spent plenty of time creating a background, when that’s the only thing on the card I somehow feel “guilty”—as if I’m supposed to do something else to it.

This is where the Spellbinders A2 Ornate Molded Frame 3D Embossing Folder By Yana Smakula came in.

ADDING TEXTURE WITHOUT ADDING BUSYNESS

I embossed the finished panel with the A2 Ornate Molded Frame 3D Embossing Folder, and I think this folder is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

The ornate frame is elegant and adds noticeable dimension and interest, but it doesn’t compete with what’s already happening on the background. That’s exactly what I wanted here. It gave me that extra something I felt the card needed without requiring another focal element or making an already colorful design even busier.

And now I kind of want to use this folder on every background.

After embossing, I adhered the panel to a white card base.

To finish the card, I went through my stash of pre-made sentiment labels and chose a dark mahogany Sending Thanks sentiment. The color coordinated beautifully with the darker tones already in the background without covering much of the floral design.

I added a few Red Cosmos Enamel Dots and Citrus Punch Enamel Dots as the final embellishment.

I really like how this card ended up balancing two things that don’t necessarily seem like they should go together: the flowers are quite bright and colorful, while the background and finishing details give the whole design a more vintage, rustic feeling.

And those spring-and-summer daisies? With the right colors, I think they adapted to fall just fine.

Sometimes a fairly simple card design just needs one little detail to make it more interesting. For this Christmas card, I kept the stamped design quite clean and let a dimensional die-cut sentiment become the main feature.

I started by stamping the festive arrangement onto white cardstock using the Papertrey Ink Vase Collection 5 Mini Stamp Set. The ornament-like vase filled with holiday greenery and berries creates most of the design, so there really wasn’t a need to add much more.

For the sentiment, I used the Papertrey Ink All Is Bright Die, cutting it directly from the stamped panel. I then die-cut the same sentiment several more times from red cardstock and stacked the pieces together before placing the original white die-cut on top and fitting everything back into the openings in the background.

Using red cardstock for the dimensional layers adds another small detail to the design. When the raised sentiment is viewed from the side, the red layers are visible around the edges. This helps the sentiment stand out more from the white background while also tying it visually to the red card base.

The same idea would work with many other sentiment dies, especially larger designs made up of several words. You could even recreate the look with alphabet dies if you don’t have a suitable sentiment die, although lining up all those individual letters would take a little more time.

I adhered the finished white panel onto a red card base instead of my usual white one. That extra border of Christmas red helps frame the very simple design and brings a little more festive color to the card.

A few clear embellishments finished everything off without competing with the dimensional sentiment.

Today I’m sharing a warm and cozy holiday project that puts a fun twist on seasonal crafting — a Christmas pie themed card created with the Altenew Craft Your Life Project Kit: Sweet Harvest.

This kit is typically associated with fall and Thanksgiving, but the iconic layered pie die is simply too charming to put away after autumn. So instead of creating another seasonal fall card, I decided to give the pie a holiday spin and turn it into the centerpiece of a festive Christmas design.

CREATING THE CHRISTMAS PIE FOCAL POINT

In my opinion, the star of the Sweet Harvest Die Set is the beautifully layered pie, and it became the perfect centerpiece for my Christmas pie card.

Pies aren’t just for fall — cherry pies, cranberry tarts, berry pastries, and all those delicious warm desserts show up at holiday gatherings too. So, choosing a red filling felt like a natural way to shift the look from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

For the base layers of the pie, I stuck with warm neutrals from the Crafting Necessities line: Sand Dunes, Milk Chocolate, Espresso.

These shades work beautifully together to mimic the baked, golden tones of real pie crust. For the filling, I used Heart Beat cardstock — the perfect vibrant red to bring the Christmas pie theme to life.

To build the pie, I die-cut the main pie shape twice: once from Sand Dunes and once from Heart Beat. The Sand Dunes layer becomes the pie crust, while the red layer peeks from underneath like a festive holiday filling.

Because the pie crust die is a single piece, I trimmed down the Sand Dunes layer around the edges so it would sit neatly on top of the red layer. This way, the crust maintains its realistic shape while the filling still shows through.

I then die-cut:

• The lattice strips from Milk Chocolate
• The outer crust edge from Espresso

These details add such beautiful depth and visual interest, making the finished pie look almost edible.

Before putting everything together, several of the die-cut pieces were gently inked with matching Fresh Dye Inks to achieve that soft, baked look. The inking is subtle, but it makes a big difference — especially when the card is supposed to feel warm and cozy.

Once all the pie components were ready, I began assembling them using The Glue, which is my go-to liquid adhesive for layered die-cut elements. It dries quickly, but not so fast that you can’t shift pieces slightly if needed.

• First, I adhered the trimmed Sand Dunes crust onto the red Heart Beat base.
• Next, I layered the Milk Chocolate lattice strips over the filling.
• Finally, I added the Espresso outer crust ring, completing the realistic look of the pie.

ADDING HOLLY TO TRANSFORM THE PIE

To enhance the festive Christmas pie theme, I paired the pie with holly branches from the Winter Florals Stamp & Die Bundle. Adding holly to almost any image instantly turns it into a holiday element — and it worked beautifully here.

I stamped the branches using:

• Grass Field and Shadow Creek Fresh Dye Inks (from the Green Valley bundle)
• Cherry Sweet Fresh Dye Ink (from the Carnival Magic bundle)

Then I die-cut them and set them aside for assembly.

BUILDING A WARM BACKGROUND

A cozy theme calls for a rich, textured backdrop, so I embossed a panel of Dark Chocolate cardstock with the 3D Embossing Folder from the Craft Your Life Project Kit: Sweet Harvest.

• The embossed panel was adhered to a white card base.
• This background sets the perfect stage for the focal element.

For the smaller top panel, I lightly ink-blended the edges of a white cardstock piece using Rocky Shore Fresh Dye Ink from the Coffee Break bundle. The soft white center keeps the card airy while still adding warmth around the edges. I also added subtle splatters with the same ink for texture.

Before assembling, I stamped the Sending Warm Blessings sentiment from the Warm Blessings Stamp Set.

And of course, because baked-goods cards and Christmas crafting go hand-in-hand, I added a wrap of red baker’s twine above the sentiment. It ties everything together both literally and visually.

ASSEMBLING THE CARD

Once all pieces were ready, it was time to bring the card together. I foam-mounted the inked panel onto the embossed background using black foam squares. Holly branches were arranged first, creating a natural cluster behind the focal point. The pie was adhered with foam squares on top for dimension and emphasis.

FINISHING TOUCHES

To complete the Christmas pie look, I added red enamel dots from the Red Cosmos set. Some were placed directly onto the pie lattice to mimic bits of filling peeking through. Others were added as holly berries around the stamped branches. One was tucked slightly under the inked panel for an organic detail.

I’m sharing today a cozy fall card I created using the beautiful Altenew Enchanted Vines Die Set. I really wanted this intricate Enchanted Vines design to shine as the focal point while adding a touch of dimension and warmth through layered die cuts and rich seasonal colors.

CREATING THE ENCHANTED VINES BACKGROUND

The Enchanted Vines dies make it easy to create both a dimensional background and beautiful accent layers.

The Enchanted Vines Die Set includes three dies:

• a large cover die that perfectly fits an A2 card size, and
• two smaller accent dies that can be used to enhance the main design.

ADDING THE BACKGROUND LAYERS

I started by die-cutting the large vine cover panel twice — once from Crafty Necessities Maple Yellow Cardstock and 4 times from a dark gray cardstock from my stash. (This is actually a great way to use up cardstock colors you might not love but still don’t want to waste!)

I stacked all die cuts together with liquid adhesive, placing the yellow one on top.

This layering added just enough depth and shadow to create a dimensional background without overwhelming the Enchanted Vines design.

ADDING THE ACCENT ELEMENTS

Next, I used the two accent dies from the Enchanted Vines set. I die-cut these shapes from Crafty Necessities Orange Cream and Autumn Blaze Cardstock.

I adhered the Autumn Blaze die cuts flat onto the Orange Cream pieces, and then popped those up slightly onto the Maple Yellow vine panel using thin black foam squares. The subtle lift brought the design to life with a nice layered effect.

Once all my die-cut pieces were ready, I adhered them onto a Crafty Necessities Dark Night Cardstock card base.

BUILDING THE SENTIMENT CLUSTER

For the sentiments, I used Berry Mocha Fresh Dye Ink along with the One-Go: Solid Sentiment Strips 3 Press Plates. These plates allow you to create multiple sentiment labels at once — such a time saver!

After impressing and die-cutting them with the coordinating die, I picked five gratitude-themed messages that fit perfectly with the cozy fall vibe of the card.

I arranged the sentiments in a stacked layout, popping each one up slightly for even spacing and dimension. This trick of using several similar-themed sentiment strips works wonderfully when your Enchanted Vines background is strong enough to stand on its own — it adds meaning and balance without crowding the focal point.

FINISHING TOUCHES

To complete the card, I added a few enamel dots from the Warm & Cozy and Citrus Punch sets for small pops of coordinating color.

And that finished the project! The layered die cuts and stacked sentiments give this Enchanted Vines card a bold yet balanced look — perfect for sending a heartfelt “thank you” this season.

It has been a while since I shared a video here—and by a while, I mean about six years! For my first video after such a long break, I decided to start with a fairly simple technique combining dry embossing and watercolor pencils.

CREATING THE EMBOSSED WATERCOLOR BACKGROUND

For the background, I started with Crafty Necessities: Parrot Cardstock and the 3D embossing folder from the Build-A-Garden: Oxeye Daisy set. Since the original design is concentrated more toward the center, I embossed the panel on both sides to extend the floral pattern across the background.

The watercolor effect was created with the Woodless Watercolor Pencil 24 Set. I wanted a monochromatic background, so I used only the Shadow Creek pencil and traced around the raised embossed design.

I then used a slightly wet brush from the Fine Watercolor Brushes set to wash out the pencil pigment, creating loose watercolor shadows around the embossed flowers while still leaving some of the original cardstock color visible. Because I was working with regular cardstock rather than watercolor paper, I kept the amount of water to a minimum.

After the first layer dried, I repeated the process, this time keeping the pencil closer to the embossed areas. This added deeper color and more definition around the flowers.

FINISHING THE CARD

For the focal point, I used the coordinating products from the Build-A-Garden: Oxeye Daisy set. I stamped the floral image with Espresso Fresh Dye Ink, colored it with the coordinating stencils using yellow and green inks from the Pocketful Of Sunshine Fresh Dye Ink Bundle and Green Valley Fresh Dye Ink Bundle, and cut it out with the coordinating die.

I foam-mounted the finished background onto a white card base using Instant Dimension Foam Tape and added the floral element on top. For the sentiment, I used the One-Go Birthday Greetings Stamp & Die Bundle.

I originally tried adding enamel dots and crystals, but they made the design feel a little too busy. Instead, I finished the card with a few clear droplets, which add some detail without adding much visual weight.

Today I’m sharing a card featuring the gorgeous Essential Textures: Basketweave Letterpress Plate Set and inspired by apple picking.

APPLE PICKING INSPIRED CARD WITH BASKETWEAVE LETTERPRESS

I’m a big fan of background products (stamps, stencils, press plates, you name it) and I particularly favor natural designs.

When I saw this letterpress plate, I wanted to get my hands on it. It’s a background plate, which can be used independently, but I wanted to have some supporting actors as well. The first thing that likely comes to mind when seeing this design is a basket filled with freshly harvested items. For me, said items were apples as I enjoy apple picking the most among all PYO activities.

BASKETWEAVE BACKGROUND LETTERPRESS

I started making the card by creating a basketweave background using the press plate in question.

First, I colored a white panel using Sand Dunes Fresh Dye Ink (by applying the ink pad directly to the paper until I completely colored it).

Next, I added the basketweave design using the Rocky Shore Fresh Dye Ink.

APPLE ELEMENTS

For the apple elements, I used the Blossoming Apple Bundle, which includes a press plate, matching die and coloring stencil.

I impressed the apple branch design onto a white cardstock using the Blossoming Apple Press Plate Set and Espresso Fresh Dye Ink. After that, I colored it using the coloring stencil and inks from the Red Cosmos, Green Valley, Pocketful of Sunshine, and Coffee Break Fresh Dye Ink Bundles.

Next, the apple branch was die-cut using the matching die. To not have white edges around the apple branch elements I filled them up using the Rocky Shore and Sand Dunes Artist Markers.

ASSEMBLING THE CARD

I could use the apple branch as the focal point of the card, which would work perfectly. However, lately, I’ve been into cutting one element into several pieces to frame the background. It seems to be a technique I’ve been using for many of my recent cards.  So that’s exactly what I did for this card as well.

To add some more interest to the card, I also tore the background in two parts in the middle and distressed the torn edges. I think this look matches the card theme nicely.

The background panel parts were foam-mounted onto a white card base, followed by foam-mounting the apple branch pieces on top. I also added brown splatters onto the background and apple elements for extra interest.

I created a sentiment using the Blossoming Apple Bundle and popped it up onto the card. Several Red Cosmos Enamel Dots finished off the card.
