The World's Easiest Dessert - Delicious Dump Cake

Do you love easy & delicious desserts? Especially Cobbler? Then we predict this will become a favorite for you! Only 5 ingredients and incredibly quick and easy. My Mother-In-Law, Brenda, made this for us in January of 2008 and she found it in a Hints from Heloise column in the newspaper. Leigh's Dad doesn't much care for it which only means there is more for me!!!!

Ingredients-

1 - 20 ounce can of crushed pineapple in heavy syrup
1 - 21 ounce can of cherry pie filling
1- 2 layer yellow cake mix
1- cup pecans chopped
1 - stick margarine or butter

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 9 x 13 baking pan. Spread pineapple with syrup, evenly in the pan. Spoon pie filling evenly over pineapple. Sprinkle cake mix over the fruit. Sprinkle chopped nuts over top of cake. Cut butter into thin slices and place on top of nuts. Bake 50 min or until golden. Serve warm.

That's all there is to it! Just 5 ingredients and it is soooooo good! Especially warm out of the oven with a scoop of Bluebell's Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream! YUM!

Tomorrow night is our last Bell Choir rehearsal (until fall) at church. I'm taking this for everyone to try. Hope they don't mind that a piece is missing! Had to post it on the blog.

Mother's Day Copy Cat Craft

Last week we put together our Pinterest inspired Mother's Day Crafts and Leigh's favorite was a jar put together by Eighteen 25. She came over last Sunday and we made one for her Grandma - hope she doesn't see this post until after we give it to her!!!

Here's our version of Eighteen 25's string jar using their printable label -

We got most of the supplies from Wally World and lucked out because they had embroidery floss on clearance for .10 a skein. The floss is wrapped on small craft sticks (also from Wal-Mart). I would have loved to use the large peg clothes pins like Eighteen25, but they didn't have them and it was Sunday so Hobby Lobby was closed. We also used some white and cream cotton yarn and twine to help fill in.

The top of the jar is covered with a piece of scrapbook paper with Happy Mother's Day 2013 printed on it. The label on the front of the jar can be download courtesy of Eighteen25 HERE

Leigh just about wore her fingers out twining the floss around the craft sticks, but we both just love how adorable it turned out. It will look great in my Mom's craft room.

Bedroom Furniture Makeover

Back in the mid 90's, Leigh's Dad and I purchased bedroom furniture that was solid wood. The set was made be Basset with very clean lines and has served us well since then. However, the light oak finish had become very dated.

I decided that it was time for new furniture until I realized the outrageous prices on a comparable solid wood set. Besides that, I could never find a set that I liked as well as our dresser and nightstands.

Here's what they looked like before the makeover -

I knew that I wanted something dark and found a vanity makeover on Pinterest using General Finishes Java Stain. Leigh and I tried it out on a bookshelf for her first - check out that post HERE. The bookshelf turned out fantastic and I knew that the stain would be perfect for our furniture.

This stain is incredibly easy to use. I just lightly sanded the furniture and then applied 3 coats of stain, using foam brushes and allowing plenty of drying time in between coats. Then I finished it off with 2 coats of General Finishes Poly/Acrylic Satin. Monica of MonicaWantsIt has an awesome step by step tutorial The only thing I did differently is that I used foam brushes to apply the stain.

I love the look of the new furniture and it is holding up well so far.

I have to admit that it took me about 6 weeks to finish it all up. Tim asked me if I could please finish it up since he was tired of having his underwear laying out on the dining room table!!! Poor guy!!!

But hey - I saved him THOUSANDS of dollars by refinishing our furniture - so I think having his undies on display for a few weeks was a small price to pay!!!

Leigh asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day this year (which is right around the corner, btw!) and I told her that I wanted her to come over this Sunday and help me make gifts for the Grandmas!!! I ran across this quote tonight on a lovely blog by the name of The Chiffon Diary. Nicholl recently visited Columbia and talked about how good it was to go unplugged and reconnect with her husband and family. Leigh's Dad and I were lucky enough to spend a week unplugged on a cruise recently and this quote completely captures how that felt for me.

Sometimes, you just have to let things go, just for this reason and our time away allowed me to do that. Of course, we couldn't have done that without Leigh at home taking care of things for us.

I don't know what we would do without our beautiful daughter! Love you Leigh!

Carving out a Craft Space

Leigh has inherited the craft gene (of course!) and needed a craft area in her new apartment. She got her a small dark wood bar height table for her birthday back in February and that left a large amount of unused space in her dining room. After a trip to Ikea we got the great idea to curtain off the back wall for her craft desk and supplies.

Here it is with the curtain closed -

TaDa!!! Presto Chango and the Dining Room turns into a Craft Room!

The curtain wire kit and clips cost less than $20 at Ikea and the curtain panels were only $9.99. It was really easy to put up and makes a great cover up for her craft area, while still giving her plenty of room for her table and chairs.

We just love how cozy her dining room turned out and her living room is coming together nicely too!

She picked up a great peacock pillow at Garden Ridge for only $9.99 and it looks terrific on her grey couch! Her thrift store lamp fits in nicely too now that it isn't dark green with brass trim!

Her first truly grown up space is really coming together and

completely captures her style - Feminine and Classy!

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

I love oatmeal cookies! Add some chocolate and they are in the running for my favorite cookie! Only bested by the snicker-doodle of course. I was craving some this weekend, so I googled "oatmeal chocolate chip cookies" and a Betty Crocker recipe came up first. I modified them a tiny bit, so here is my take on the original recipe.

1 1/2 Cups Packed Brown Sugar
1 Cup Butter
1 1/2 Teaspoons Vanilla
1 Egg
2 Cups Quick Oats
1 1/2 Whole Wheat Flour
1 Teaspoon Baking Soda
1/4 Teaspoon Salt
1 1/4 Cups Mini Chocolate Chips

I used Whole Wheat Flour and an Organic, Cage-Free Egg, so they are healthy......right??? They have oatmeal in them, which is healthy too, right?

I got a little artsy on this last photo, please forgive me. I just love Picmonkey!

So, the recipe makes 48 cookies. Holy cow! I love these, but 48 seemed a bit crazy. I froze a quarter of the recipe for later. You can save the dough in the freezer for up to 6 months, not that it will last that long in mine.

Everyone at the office loved these cookies. I hope you love them too!

Easy Cupcake Liner Storage

Cupcakes have become quite the rage over the past few years and we've seen a huge increase in the variety of liners out there. I used to just store the leftover liners in a Ziploc bag in the pantry but they kept getting squished!!!

Since we've started blogging, well, ok, actually since I discovered Pinterest, I'm loathe to throw anything out! When I emptied up a bread crumb container, it struck me that it would make the perfect Cupcake Liner storage!!! So I gathered up all the liners that I could find, salvaged those that weren't squished and promptly stuck them in the empty container. Worked like a charm and I thought I would make it pretty and blog about it. Fast forward 6 months and I finally made it pretty! Better late than never is my motto!

What do you think? I covered the container with a white sheet of cardstock, then covered it in the polka dot paper (so the print wouldn't show through). Cut out the cupcake shape with my Cricut and attached it to rectangle of paper that I printed out the words on.

I think I'll probably cover it in clear vinyl too (maybe in another 6 months!), because I am not the tidiest baker around and I'd hate for it to end up all covered in frosting and cupcake batter!

Dollar Tree had Progresso bread crumbs on my last visit, so I'll soon be making another one. I mean really, is there anyone out there that wouldn't love to have a few of these in their pantry? You could even make them themed - colors or holidays - that is, if you love bread crumbs! I might even be tempted to buy some more bread crumbs and dump them in a Ziploc bag!!!

We Fixed our Ice Maker!!!

Ok, I don't normally blog about all the ups and downs of every day life, but I just had to crow about this one!!!!

WE FIXED OUR ICEMAKER!!!!! For those of you that don't know us, we are usually the "Call the Repair Man" kind of people, but thanks to the internet and a great website (and no this isn't a sponsored post) Appliance Parts Pros, I found the information we needed to get it back up and running again!

Look at all that LOVELY ICE!!!

So here's the saga of the ice maker. It started working intermittently last spring, then finally quit working right around the time that Mr. Crafty had his surgery. So we opted for making ice that old fashioned way......with ice cube trays! Most of you young people have probably never had any experience with these, but they do make ice like a charm and if one breaks, you just run down to the $ store and buy another package!

Even though the ice maker wasn't working we were still able to get ice out of the fridge door.....until about the beginning of February when the dispenser broke too!!! I think it was all of that home made ice - it's much bigger than the ice cubes that the fridge makes.

I thought that since the ice maker was broken. we at least needed the dispenser to work! I got online with the model of the fridge and found Appliance Parts Pros.com. Found the dispenser/bucket and along with that, their great question and answer section. After reading several of the comments from their techs, I found out what might be wrong with the ice maker. Several of the tech comments talked about the water valve needing to be replaced, so I thought we would try it along with replacing the dispenser/bucket too.

We ordered the bucket and the valve and it was delivered just a few days later. The valve was really easy for Mr. Crafty to replace and the water immediately flowed into the ice maker just like it was supposed to! It only made one batch of ice and then, although I could feel the ice in the maker, it wouldn't drop over into the tray.

Back to the website for more info. Turned out the plastic gear on the front of the ice maker was missing a tooth! Another small order from the website and PRESTO!!! The Ice Maker is full!!!!

I can't tell you what a great feeling it is to have been able to repair the ice maker ourselves! It's the little things in life, like a fridge full of ice that makes me HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!!!

No more Ice Cube Trays for us!!!! Thanks to this great website!!!

Iced tea just tastes so much sweeter when the ice cubes are made for you! Right?

Cool Breeze Lime Pie

We made one of our family favorites for Easter this year ~ Cool Breeze Lime Pie. It's a very easy and delicious no bake pie.

Cool Breeze Lime Pie

Ingredients

1 pckg Cream Cheese (softened)

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk

1 carton (8 oz) lime yogurt

1/3 cup lime juice

1 drop green food coloring

4 oz cool whip

1 graham cracker crust

Directions

Beat cream cheese in a large bowl at medium speed until fluffy. Gradually beat in sweetened condensed milk until well blended.

Beat in yogurt, lime juice, food coloring until smooth.

Fold in Cool Whip. Spoon in pie shell.

Refrigerate 3 hours until firm.

The recipe also calls for 1 tsp Lime zest, but frankly, I don't think it needs it. The pie is flavorful enough without it and I think it just looks funny with the zest. Leigh whipped up the pies for us while I was busy working Saturday night and she made them really GREEN! LOL! I don't usually make them quite so brilliantly colored. But they tasted just like normal - kind of a lime cheesecake dessert.

This recipe makes a deliciously cool summer time dessert and is one of the hubby's favorites. Do you have a family favorite ice box pie? That's what my Granny used to call them.

Gel Stained Oak Bookshelf

We finally finished Leigh's Bookshelf and we LOVE how it turned out! Many thanks to Monica Wants It and One Good Thing by Jillee (and Pinterest) for introducing us to General Finishes Gel Stain.

Ta Da!

I have to say that this stain is amazingly easy to work with and completely transforms your furniture. I applied 3 coats with foam brushes and 1 coat of the poly, also with a foam brush. The directions on both blogs called for multiple coats of poly, but since this won't be in a wet or high use area, we thought (ok, we hope!) that 1 coat would be enough. Only time will tell.

We ordered both the stain and poly on Amazon -

I'm staining our bedroom furniture with this same stain and hope to have it completed next weekend. I'm trying to take my time and let it dry completely, but I'm really tired of all my clothes being in grocery sacks on the bedroom floor!!!

Simple Shamrock Centerpiece

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Today is my son Ty's birthday and we are having the family over for burgers. I needed something for the dining room table and had a pack of foam shamrocks from Dollar Tree, so I threw this together for the table.

Used the glue gun to glue a leftover flower stems sandwiched between a glittery shamrock and a plain one. Then filled the jar with Easter grass, added a bit of ribbon and a few green shamrocks we had. Would have looked better with gold coins, but this was a last minute idea. Only took 5 minutes to throw together!

Don't look at the wrinkles in my tablecloth!! Oh well, at least it is clean!!

How to Enable Pinning from Bloglovin'

Ok, I'm sure you've all seen the news - Google Reader is Shutting Down on July 1st. The blogging world has been in an uproar the last couple of days over it.

Frankly, I thought it was an ugly internet rumor....but it's true! Most of the blogs I follow have switched over to Bloglovin . When we first started blogging I set up a Bloglovin account, but found that I couldn't pin to Pinterest. So, although I did like the layout of Bloglovin, I gave up and went back to Reader.

Tonight, I found out how to enable Pinning from Bloglovin and thought I would share. It's just a matter of changing your settings as follows -

1. Select Account 2. Select Settings

3. Scroll to the bottom and select - I don't want the frame.

I hope this saves you some grief and irritation! With this change, I'm Lovin' Bloglovin - How about you?

Gus the Bunny Goat

Leigh and I have a lot of fun at work dressing up our company mascot - Gus the Goat! It makes us laugh, although Gus doesn't really seem to enjoy it - poor thing! But at least he gets a granola bar out of it!

Easter Egg Tree Revisited

We started blogging last year on the last day of February and this was one of our very first tutorials. The pictures that I posted were horrible, so I thought I would take some new ones and try to re-touch the picts from the tutorial. By now, you all know, that I'm not a great photographer!!

So here is last year's Easter Egg Tree Tutorial with somewhat better (?) Photos -

Since Easter is right around the corner, I was determined to make an Easter Egg Tree that was inspired by a post on Pinterest from Sweet Floweret Unfortunately, I couldn't find any affordable glittered eggs, so I made my own. I also, couldn't bring myself to spend $4.99 on a styrofoam cone, so I made the cone out of poster board from the dollar store. I like to think of myself as a Thrifty Crafter - ok I'm CHEAP!

Since I made it out of a cone I was able to place it on a glass candlestick to raise it up. I think it adds a little bit of elegance to it and also gives it more of a presence.

You will need - Mod Podge, Glitter - I used Sullyn from Hobby Lobby and some very fine purple that I've had for ages, 2 bags of small eggs (48), 1 bag of green paper grass, poster board, and a glass candlestick.

This is the messy part - Have Fun! Paint each egg with Mod Podge, then cover in glitter. I poured small amounts of both glitters onto a paper plate and then sprinkled them on to the Mod Podge covered egg that I placed in a small bowl. Shaking the bowl to make the egg turn helps evenly cover the egg. I let mine dry overnight, but they would probably dry in an hour or so.

Then it is time to make the cone. Take a length of ribbon or string and tie one end on to a pencil. Measure 12" out and tie a knot.

Hold the knot on the corner of the paper and make a mark from one side of the poster board to the other.

Then measure 2 inches on the ribbon from the pencil and a make another line in the corner of the poster board.

Next cut out the poster board.

Roll the poster board into a cone and secure it using tape. You will want to end up with an opening instead of a point. That will allow you to position the last egg on the top of the cone. The cone will be a little off, but you can even it out with scissors.

Here it is with the little uneven bit cut off.

If you are going to place the cone on a candlestick you should trace the bottom of the cone now so that you can make an insert that will allow the cone to be secured to the candlestick. Otherwise, the cone will slide down and cover the candlestick.

I traced bottom edge of the cone onto a piece of posterboard and cut out the circle. Trace a smaller circle about 1/3 of an inch inside the outer edge. Then cut tabs all the way around the circle. I used my glue runner on the tabs, then bent them up and placed this into the bottom of the cone. It should fit about an inch up into the cone and may take a few adjustments to get it right. Once I had it in and level I used the glue gun on a few of the tabs to secure it permanently.

If I had this to do over I would probably cover the cone with green paper and then add the Easter Grass, but you know what they say about hindsight!!! I used spray adhesive and then lightly covered the cone with grass. You will add more grass after gluing on the eggs to fill in the holes so don't worry about the white showing through. Of course, if you cover the cone with green paper that would solve that problem!

Using a glue gun and generous amounts of glue, start adhering the eggs.

After they are all glued on you will need to fill in the gaps with more grass. I just bunched up several strands, hit it with the glue gun and stuffed it in the holes.

I used a generous amount of hot glue to secure the candlestick inside the cone after all the eggs were glued on.

Hopefully, these pictures were a little better than last year's! I still love the tree and it held up really well - even stored in the hot attic.

I'm having a hard time with my decorating this year since Easter and St. Patrick's day are so close together. I have my St. Patrick's Day Wreath from last year on the outside of the front door and the Easter wreath on the back of it!

Dollar Store Easter Egg Tree

I finally got my Easter decorations up today! The mantel needed something new so I threw together an Easter Egg tree with a $ Store Vase and a package of $ Store Glittery Eggs.

Took all of about 10 minutes to throw together since I already had the tree branches from our Valentine's mantel.

Cut your scrapbook paper to size and affix with adhesive, wrap a strip of burlap ribbon and printed ribbon around the vase and glue down. Spray paint your branches white, stick them in the vase and hang the eggs. That's it!

I placed mine on top of a candlestick to give it some height on the mantel - didn't glue it, just sat it on top.

I just love the bright colors of the eggs and the paper. So bright and cheerful! (Not to mention CHEAP!)

Got the plant shelf decorated with my new bunny from Kirklands - isn't he cute?

The Magic of Spray Paint

Lately, I've been spray painting everything in sight.

So when Leigh found this solid wood nightstand for $25, I knew just what it needed.

What a transformation!

And all it took was a couple of cans of spray paint,

a can of spray gloss and a tube of silver Rub N Buff.

Rust-oleum is the best brand of spray paint for furniture that I've found. I've tried the cheaper brands, but for furniture, Rust-oleum is my first choice.

Here are the doors before they were painted. We left the metal plates on when we painted, but removed the pulls and hinges. Those were also spray painted. The Rub N Buff was applied with a paper napkin and then rubbed off until I got the right depth I was looking for.

I probably put 7-8 coats of paint on the the nightstand and after it had dried for several days, I sprayed at least that many coats of the Clear Gloss on the top.

The Gloss finished off the top with a beautiful sheen.

It looks adorable in Leigh's bedroom with her dark grey comforter and light gray curtains. We are working on a updating a thrift store lamp for it too and hope to have pictures posted this weekend.
