I haven’t posted an image for my 52 week project in nearly three months. It is time to refocus my energy here and complete the assignment. I actually have been shooting quite a bit over that time period but you wouldn’t know it based on what has been posted on my blog.

My subject for this week is an artist on Mill Avenue that goes by the name of Caleb who lives in Phoenix. He mixes dance music, plays the keyboard and sings. His sound is very elaborate and it is quite impressive to hear what he can do with all the equipment that is around him. Here is his setup on the street:

Caleb performing, I intentionally composed this shot off angle to get the equipment and Caleb in the frame.

When I first walked up to Caleb he had just finished playing and was going to take a break. I mentioned to him the 52 week project that I was working on and he was cool enough to resume playing so I could take these pictures. This is my favorite shot of the set and is my Week 12 submission:

Thanks to Caleb for taking the time for me to get these shots. He was a great guy and very talented, I suggest you stop by and check out his music he mentioned he is on Mill Avenue twice a month.

My friend Fernando and I were looking for a place to take some pictures last week and lately I have seen a lot of pictures taken out at Freestone Park in Gilbert, AZ. We decided to go over and check it out and here are a couple images from the shoot at sundown. I like the way this turned out, especially with the father and daughter on top of the hill.

This next picture was my favorite of the evening. It is simple but I really like the blue and orange sky with the trees silhouetted in front. I am thinking a little post work in Photoshop and this might make a good print.

Freestone Park was full of photographers when we were there and it is definitely a very popular place to shoot. I know I will be heading back here soon to try some other things out.

Well I am running over a week behind on submitting a new image for my 52 Week project but I have to say I have been quite busy the last couple weeks launching my new website which went live last week: www.craigboltonphotography.com.

This blog isn’t going away – I am committed to completing my 52 week project and will continue to post images here!

So why a new website you might ask? Well, photography has certainly become a passion of mine and I don’t see that ending until the day I’m no longer able to hold a camera to try and capture images. Photographs are a way to capture memories, emotions, a point in time that go beyond just the memory of that single experience – it provides a tangible thing to view, to hold and to share with people. It always amazes me how I can share a picture with 5 people and often times I will get 5 completely different takes on an image. It is this subjectivity that brings with it an opportunity to see things in a different way and also a responsibility to continue to evolve my skills as an artist for images the create debate, stir an emotion or just something you plain enjoy looking at.

The opportunity to shoot more, to network with new people and to share my passion with others may not sustain a business but at least I am going to give it all that I can. I am frequently asked for a business card by people who see me on the street shooting here in Phoenix or other places that I have been and now I have the place to send them to for examples of my work. You will notice that if you click on “archive & prints” on my website that it opens a new window to my PhotoShelter account. The PhotoShelter account is still very much a work in progress but it will be my image archive where you will eventually be able to order prints of my photographs and download full resolution digital copies for commercial or personal use.

I’m still wrapping up all the business paperwork, tax requirements, etc that need to be in place before I can implement the commerce piece of my PhotoShelter account and I am finding out quickly there is a lot to learn in that space. Fortunately I am surrounded by a lot of people that have been down this path before so I’m grateful that I am not doing this completely in the dark. I definitely have some ideas on areas I’d like to focus on in the business of photography and as part of the business plan I still have to sort through what areas I intend to focus on and then tighten up those areas on my website. For now, I am going to shoot as much as I can and I expect those experiences will help guide me on this journey.

To all my family and friends that have supported me from the day I picked up a camera – thank you, your support has been greatly appreciated and I’ll still need it from here on out I also need to recognize a few peoples here in particular:

My wife Michelle who not only put that first camera in my hands but has been extremely supportive of my photography from the start and also has the unfortunate perk of being my frequent test subject.

My friend Mark who taught me how to use that camera but also has been challenging my assumptions, my abilities and my goals in this space.

My friends Rob, Michael and Kayman – all have been extremely supportive of my photography from technical assistance for the website launch, business setup and planning and looking at a lot of pictures over the last couple years.

I will be catching up on my 52 week project so expect to see new images here this weekend!

Michelle and I were at the Tempe Arts Festival today and had a great time walking around and checking out all the items for sale and the wide selection of food available. We ended up at the very south end of the festival on the corner of Mill and University where I came across Sydney Sprague. Her voice caught my attention and as I listened to a couple of her songs I knew I had to try and get a picture. I walked up to someone I believe was her manager and asked permission to take a few photographs and he graciously agreed.

Sydney is a very talented Singer/Songwriter with an amazing voice! I had fun trying to get a shot of Sydney as people were walking in front of and behind her frequently – I have several pictures with people walking into the picture, etc. This is my favorite shot of the set and is my Week 11 submission:

This next photograph is the best shot I have that shows the environment she is performing in.

You can listen to her music and learn more here: Sydney Sprague. Good luck Sydney!

Michelle and I just spent a four day weekend in San Francisco and I am going through the nearly 500 pictures from the trip. We spent a day hiking in Muir Woods and then had a chance to check out Sausalito, CA. After eating in Sausalito and checking out the sites there we ended up on the Sausalito Ferry that would take us back to San Francisco. The ferry was packed and full of photographers on the outside decks taking pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, etc. As I was standing on the rear deck taking photographs one of the photographers stood next to me and started taking pictures. I caught a glimpse of something in her sunglasses and after she finished the shot I asked if she could take another one so that I could take her picture. Below is my Week 10 submission – if you look closely in Leigh’s glasses you see a reflection of the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance which is what first caught my attention when she was shooting. This shot was taken with my 16–35 f2.8 L lens so there is some distortion here as she is literally standing right next to me.

Leigh is a photographer based in Atlanta, Georgia and her website can be found here: Leigh Germy Photography. Check out her work! Thanks to Leigh for being my Week 10 subject, sometimes it is just about being lucky to get the shot you are looking for!
