Ok im a beginner when it comes to fishing but id love to get into it aside from fishing a few times and reading some pamphlets for beginners when i was younger i have no experience. I would like to know which rod/reel combo would be great for a beginner without paying a lot of cash? (and im not trying to be cheap just keep in mind im a beginner and don’t want to pay extra for a rod and reel that im just not capable of using to the fullest extent) I would be interested in fishing freshwater fish like trout, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and bass

These are always tough questions to answer. Reason being, there’s no one rod and reel that can effectively be used for Trout, Bluegills, Crappie, Catfish, and Bass.

At the very least, you will need two different setups, preferably three.

For the Bluegill and Crappie, you’re best bet is going to be a small spinning setup, even better, an ultralight setup. I won’t go into specifics, but a light action 4′6 or so rod, along with a small spinning reel will do you just fine.

For the Bass and Trout, you could go with a mid sized spinning reel on a 6′0-6′6 medium action rod.

For Catfish, you need a bigger setup to be consistant. You’ll need at least a 7′0 medium heavy action rod in my opinion. I actually like heavy actions better, but the medium heavy will suffice. Buy a larger spinning reel or baitcasting reel for them. Be sure the reel is capable of holding at least a 14 or so pound line.

Say the desert vs the arctic- in the desert I’m talking about just sand, lizards, maybe a few low-lying scrub bushes, indicating potential small reserves of water far beneath the sand. In the arctic environment I mean just snow, maybe fish under a layer of ice.

In both instances we will say you are equipped with the appropriate clothes and have the necessary tools for creating fire, a knife, a shovel, basic survival gear, but no food or water.

You only have to survive a few days, not long-term.

Which is the "easier" environment to shelter yourself from the elements, get enough water, food and just generally survive in for the short-term?
My feeling is definitely the arctic would be the easier place to survive, while my friend thinks the desert.

My feeling is arctic= cold, but you can warm yourself with a fire whereas desert= hot, you can’t effectively cool yourself without expending a lot of energy (Eg: fanning yourself… building an A/C) water- arctic, you can melt snow, the cold of the water may burn calories, but you can warm it over your fire. Desert- water= underground, you have to dig to find it, burns lots of calories. You have 3 days reserve of water in your body in "normal" conditions, in the desert, without water, you can die in a matter of hours. Food- in the dessert there IS probably more food you can realistically take down solo- foxes, lizards etc, whereas the arctic has polar bears, walruses and various other big, potentially lethal animals, with the fish beneath thick ice.
It’s far easier to build a shelter out of snow than sand, and from there you get shelter from the wind and insulate yourself.
Also, an interesting variable would be whether you’re alone or with someone else- I think that the added moral of not being alone would probably make either situation more bearable, as well as giving you a "reason to keep fighting"

Snow/Ice happen to be fair insulators. You can construct a shelter easily with a shovel and a knife., and you can maintain temp inside it with a candle or a container to burn fish oil. Fish can be eaten raw, frozen and provide good nutrition, and snow atop the salt-water ice can be melted for water. The most significant danger is the large carnivore, the polar bear.

Desert–well you will likely never get enough water, and while it is hot during the day, it may be bitterly cold at night. If you do not have a noisemaker and a mirror, you may be unable to signal potential rescuers because you will lose your voice as you dehydrate. Some sort of sunshade will be very important

I’ll take the arctic any time. Worst case, when the end comes, you drop into a sleep from which you do not awaken. In the desert, you will suffer.

EDIT: ‘comment’ what you said!

Why is it good to have a blonde passenger? You get to park in the handicap zone

What do you call a smart blonde?A golden retriever

How can you tell if a blonde’s been using the computer? There’s white-out on the screen.

A blonde was bragging about her knowledge of state capitals. She proudly says, "Go ahead, ask me, I know all of them." A friend says, "OK, what’s the capital of Wyoming?" The blonde says, "Oh that’s easy: W."

A Blonde who got a fishing rod for her birthday and decided to go ice fishing. So early the next morning she got all her gear and headed out. When she reached her destination she cut a hole in the ice and dipped the rod in. Then suddenly she heard a voice that said:"there’s no fish in there". So she moves to another spot and cuts another hole, then the same voice spoke again and told her there were no fish there. So she moves again and the voice tells her there are no fish there. So she looks up and see’s a man looking down at her. "How do you know there are no fish there?" So the man cooly says "Well first of all this is a hockey rink and you’re going to have to pay for those holes.

what kind of jig or flie or whatever should i use to catch some white crappie? and where should i look for them at? also , is there hardbaits for crappie? or just soft plastics? im livin in ohio and this is at one of our family ponds (we have 5)

I’ve never been Crappie fishing and not had luck using simple Crappie Jigs. They will hit these things all year round, as long as you fish them right. A Crappie Jig is nothing more than a downsized tube bait on a small jig head. You will want to add a small floater as well. Be sure not to go too big on the floater, being that Crappie will many times hit a bait fairly lightly.

How deep you set the floater somewhat depends on how deep the water is. Generally, when I’m pond fishing for Crappie, I’ll start out with my floater placed about a foot and a half up my line. If nothing hits it, I switch to 2 feet or so, and so on. Go deeper and deeper until you start getting hit pretty consistently. They will probably be hanging out pretty deep with how hot it’s been lately. If you have some overhanging trees providing shade over the water, it will probably be a good place to start fishing.

As far as fishing them goes, it’s not difficult. Cast it out, let it sit for 5-10 seconds, twitch it 3 or 4 times, reel in the slack, then pause again. Repeat that throughout your retrieve.

Crappie like holding on to cover. Any downed trees, rocks, stumps, shade, etc will hold Crappie throughout just about any given day. Cast towards these things, and fish them thoroughly.

Temperatures in Florida are rarely in the freezing range. When it drops to freezing temperatures, farmers spend all day preparing for the freeze, and must stay up all night to watch their crops. There are different means of protecting crops. Strawberry growers wait for just the right temperature to turn on sprinklers to cover crops with a protective layer of ice. Orange growers set out ’smudge pots’ to warm up temperatures in orange groves. Workers have to put in extra hours to harvest what they can and get it to market. The more loss there is, the higher the prices we all have to pay at the market.

Many homeless shelters must kick in to high gear as well. The emergency shelters that only are open for extreme weather are opening and must be prepared for high numbers of people.

There are other industries that rely on warm weather that are impacted as well, such as tropical fish farms.

While it is rare for Florida to drop below freezing, and when it does, it is usually only for one or two days at a time, this cold spell is predicted to last for at least a week. Believers, Florida can use your prayers. Will you pray?
sophieb; true, freezing temps usually occur in the wee hours of the morning. Preparing for it is around the clock. And the impact of just a few hours can destroy crops, and cause produce prices to skyrocket.

Prayers to Florida!

There are 2 ways that I usually tear up the crappie with. The first way being go to wal-mart,and find a Z-man micro white chatterbait. Then buy Berkley Powerbait Power Grubs in white for a trailer.Put the grub on the chatterbait and that will get the crappie going, and bass sometimes. The second way is getting a Strike King Bits Pond Minnow in white or Sexy Shad. This will get Crappie,Bass and Bluegill biting. But DEFINITELY the Crappie! Tight Lines
Hope this helped!

I’m from Minnesota and live on a lake up North, with moderate ice fishing pressure, and I need help as to how to get started. First off, a got a deal on a clam 2 person sled ice shelter, and will be using that. It has four holes. I need to know what kind of line to be using, the best rod for the price, the bait and presentation to be used, items to take along (I will be towing behind snowmobile), and location. There is a sunken roadbed on my lake which has lots of people fishing it, and I believe it’s about 10-12 feet deep. What are they catching? I need to know some popular presentayion tactics for Crappie, Walleye, and Northern. I’ve learned a little about rattle reals, and thought that with 2 people in the house, you jig 2 rods and have 2 rattle reels set up. By the way, how DO you set them up? I need to know what kind of gear, location, and presentation I need to give each of those 3 species listed above.

Thanks for reading and the help.

-Ryan

I live and ice and summer fish in northern minnesota. For ice fishing walleye/crappie I use a light ice spinning rod with 6lb line. I have them set up with slip bobbers with a jigs, mainly and with minnows for bait. For pike I use a tip up. With a large minnow. As far as the old road bed I would guess they are fishing for walleye. I also use a vexlair and a under water camera. Best of luck.
