Stupid… Stupid…Stupid !!!

These were the words of Gavaskar during commentary after Rishabh Pant played an ill-advised scoop shot despite fielders stationed at third man and fine leg, precisely to counter that stroke. Predictably, Pant’s attempt resulted in a mistimed hit, landing safely in Lyon’s hands at third man. Shots like these, with inherently low control, are risky, and attempting one against a medium pacer like Boland on the expansive boundaries of the MCG was outright stupid.

But this wasn’t the only stupidity during the match. When we reflect on India’s performance in the 4th Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Melbourne, a series of avoidable stupidity stands out.

Stupidity 1: Team Selection

The debacle started with questionable team selection. Dropping Gill in favor of two batting all-rounders (Sundar and Reddy) seemed like an overcompensation for the poor form of Kohli and Sharma in the XI. Covering for one out-of-form batter is manageable but carrying two in a high-stakes series against Australia, in their backyard, proved disastrous.

Stupidity 2: Disruption in the Opening Pair

Rahul and Jaiswal were good as openers in the first two Tests. However, Rohit Sharma, returning at No. 6 without meaningful contributions in the 2^nd and 3^rd test, forced his way back to the opening role and disturbed a fruitful pair. This reshuffle demoted Rahul to No. 3, affecting both players’ form. With Rohit and Rahul faltering and Kohli offering little at No. 4, the top order became a glaring hole, leaving the lower order an uphill battle with both bat and ball.

Stupidity 3: Run Out Disaster

In the first innings, India was cruising at 151/2, chasing Australia’s mammoth 479. A solid partnership between Jaiswal (82) and Kohli (36) had flourished. Then came the turning point—Jaiswal attempted a suicidal single to mid-on while Kohli was ball-watching, resulting in a needless run-out. This moment of recklessness caused a collapse: Kohli edged behind soon after, the night-watchman fell cheaply, and India slid to 159/5 from a commanding position.

Why does this keep happening? In Test Cricket, run outs are unpardonable. If Sharma had been Jaiswal’s partner, would this have occurred? Kohli has been involved in few costly runouts recently.

Stupidity 4: Night Watchman Mismanagement

Sending in a night watchman with 30 more minutes of play left—when Kohli was well-set on 36—was a puzzling decision. Kohli don’t need protection. This was tried earlier in the series against New Zealand to protect Kohli, and it was no different here. Just as before this time too the outcome was no different.

Stupidity 5: 3 Dropped Catches

Pant’s dismissal in the first innings already made the highlight of this write-up, so skipping to the rest. Three Dropped catches in Australia’s second innings each of Khawaja, Labuschagne and Lyon robbed India of any chance to wrest control.

Stupidity 6: Sharma’s Recklessness

On the final day, chasing 340, a draw was India’s best hope. Sharma dug in admirably during the first hour, showing patience and discipline. Then, out of nowhere, he attempted a leg-side whip off Cummins, edged the ball, and was caught by Marsh at slips. The moment of folly ended his resistance, further deflating India’s hopes. Runs are low priority at this point and playing time was utmost. What forced Sharma’s recklessness at a crucial juncture.

Stupidity 7: Kohli’s Endless Off-Stump Chases

In the last over before lunch, Kohli chased a wide delivery outside off-stump from Starc, edging to Khawaja. The sight of Kohli nicking deliveries to the slips or keeper has become a painful and all-too-familiar occurrence for Indian fans. When is the end to this agony for Indian fans?

Stupidity 8: Pant’s Uncharacteristic Misstep

Pant played a very uncharacteristic innings in the second outing. Farmed a brilliant partnership with Jaiswal that lasted between Lunch and Tea. Just when it all looked good, the part-timer Head dished a half cracker that tempted Pant to play the pull only to find the fielder stationed at midwicket. Having showed immense maturity to play a patient innings, one would wish he continued in the same tone and curbed the instinct to pull that could have saved India the TEST.

The rest of the batting lineup crumbled, unable to survive the remaining 38 overs. This dismissal shattered any chance of salvaging the game.

Stupid… Stupid… Stupid is the only way to describe India’s performance in this Test. The team management and selectors must address glaring issues ahead of the final Test in Sydney.

Should Team Management/Selectors step up and drop Kohli & Sharma from the 11? Or play them as scapeGOATs for series defeat?

The anger is currently at tipping point. This series would have panned different if Sharma had not returned from paternity leave. There is no way to sweep this under the carpet. Sharma and Kohli must go. But when is the right time to bring down the axe. Now? Or at the end of the series?

Where did India fall Short

With New Zealand coming off a series defeat to Sri Lanka, it was easy to assume they wouldn’t pose a serious challenge to India, especially in similar conditions. But one of India’s main adversaries turned out to be complacency itself—a mindset that often undercuts even the best teams.

Complacency and Selection Questions

The No. 4 batting spot is traditionally given to the most skilled batter, as it’s considered the ideal position to make an impact. However, despite nearly four years of underwhelming form, Virat Kohli’s place in this position has largely gone unchallenged due to his reputation.

Adding to this, Rohit Sharma’s recent statements about “big runs being overrated without tournament wins” may have hinted at a shift in focus, valuing impactful cameo contributions over sustained innings. While this approach may work in shorter formats, it doesn’t lend itself well to Test cricket, which could explain some inconsistency in his recent performances.

Skill Development and SENA-Focused Approach

Over the last decade, India’s strategy has heavily emphasized winning series in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries. To succeed in seaming conditions, Indian batsmen adapted their skills, often at the expense of their proficiency against spin—a traditional strength. The emphasis on international pitches has also limited the time players can spend in domestic circuits, which are critical for honing homegrown skills, especially against spin.

This oversight became evident in matches like Pune and Mumbai, where spin-friendly surfaces exposed the team’s weaknesses. Additionally, a rare failure on a seaming pitch, where India was bowled out for 46, indicated broader issues.

Mumbai Test Decisions

Heading into the Mumbai Test, it was known the pitch would be bone-dry, yet management chose to play with two seamers. This decision was puzzling, as only one seamer was likely needed on such a surface. Such tactical choices hinted at a lack of alignment between strategy and conditions, something even the average fan could question.

Looking Ahead

These points are only the most visible of India’s struggles. It’s time for a thorough introspection—identifying root causes, refining strategies, and making balanced, long-term decisions to strengthen the team’s overall health and resilience.

Ashwin and B Kumar selection Mystery

Extremely disappointing limited overs series defeat in the hands of SA. It is easier to think we missed the services of Jadeja and Pandya and their shoes were too big to fill for a debutant such as V Iyer. That said, India still did not use the series to full advantage in terms of exploring talents. Rather used it to eliminate B Kumar and Ashwin. Don’t see the duo featuring in limited overs going forward (which we already know that they would be found wanting). Chahar has developed into a nice swing bowler in the last few seasons and his performance against SL with bat recently was magical. His selection should have been straightforward in place of B Kumar from first ODI. Similarly, Ashwin was found wanting in the TEST series. Why play a jaded Ashwin rather a pair of fresh legs like Jayant Yadav or Prasid Krishna from the first ODI?

Dhawan “the Big Elephant”

Only few months ago the selectors showed inclination of moving away from Dhawan. The choices indicated Rohit and Rahul are the prime openers and Ishan Kishan is back up. As Rohit was out due to injury, should it not be logical to give Ishan Kishan a fair run after the long wait? How/Why should selectors bring back Dhawan and send Ishan again to waiting room? This is inconsistency from selectors part and it has nothing to do with Dhawan. Dhawan did his job well for the role of opener in the absence of Rohit. Again, Dhawan age could play a part, if selectors are looking at him as option for 2023 WC. He is 36 now. Should be 38+ then. Any poor form during the mega event, like it or not, it will be attributed to age. Suddenly the next guy won’t be ready as he won’t have the necessary experience needed. We witnessed ageing Dhoni in 2019WC and inexperienced showing of Vijay Shankar. Now with this performance, not sure if Dhawan is back in the mix for WT20 2022 edition. Dhawan did well in this series and he is a big elephant in the room to ignore.

Captain Rahul

As much Rahul was a stand in skipper for Rohit (probably the guy next in line too) appears to be holding the weight of the world on his shoulder when leading the side. His batting lacked the usual dynamism at the top of the order. Who else you need other than Kohli to anchor the ship when chips go wrong. If required, players like Pant, S Iyer, Takur all have caliber to come good. It’s about having trust on your resources to come shining when needed and playing your natural game. A Captains quintessential trait should be trusting his comrades. Rahul didn’t exhibit this character in this series.

What we derived from SA Tour?

Pujara and Rahane should see the end of their road very soon (if not already). Ashwin and B Kumar come backs are short lived. Dhawan is too big an elephant to ignore. The selections in both tests and limited overs were largely driven by seniority rather on merit of form.

Way Forward

Pant is wasted in the middle order. Its high time somebody see his potential and make him the opener where he can be expressive. The field restrictions in the first power play will allow his style of batting to pay rich dividends. In Tests, there are no field restrictions and we see different version of Pant. Its time to extract that Test version of Pant in limited overs too.

There is no point in sitting out talents like Gaikwad (5 centuries in Vijay Hazary Trophy). The team management should be flexible in their thought process and open up vacancies for special talents.

Beyond Rohit Sharma the next in line for leadership is an open race. Rahul, Pant, S Iyer, Bumrah, Samson, Pandya (now included) a lot of these names are thrown up in the mix. Should go to any of them if only they exhibit leadership qualities. Won’t be a bad idea to interview them for the role to get their line of thinking, their blue print for India etc. to understand them better before the job is handed in the future.

Hopefully in the IPL seasons ahead we would like to see one of the future captaincy prospects winning other than the usual suspects to throw some light as who that next torch bearer is.

Bottomline

Dravid surely started on the backfoot. Hopefully he used the series as first hour of batting to get a good measure of conditions. Looking forward to seeing the WALL standing TALL.

Kohli's Captaincy era ends.

Every captain has a shelf life. Kohli lived it to its entirety.

Fall out with the board, ending the year by bowing out of WT20 prematurely, beginning the year by losing the overseas series are enough signs to bid adieu for 7+ years of captaincy life. Kohli nailed his resignation.

Kohli has been brilliant in imparting the fitness culture in the Indian setup that allowed the players to perform to their potential and beyond to produce the desired results (particularly overseas). It is heartening to see our fast bowlers look fitter, meaner, stronger and outperform the Australian/English counterparts who are traditionally blessed with larger built and stronger fitness compared to Indians. Kohli gets the credit for cracking the code and we as fans could enjoy India’s transformation and do extremely well in the overseas arena for the last 3 – 4 years. Remember its only few years ago, Indians were mocked for being “Lions at home and Mice abroad”. As a fan, one would be indebted to Kohli to get rid of the tag. Not just that, India turned into one of the best tourist nations in the recent years.

On the flip side, he constantly threaded arrogance in the name of aggression. Sometimes his tantrums were too hot to handle. His team selections were questionable many a times (even the most recent series that India lost to SA, it is because of poor team selection). He dumped players when he should have backed them and backed players when he should be dumping them. There were constant murmurs from players on his poor man management skills. The fall out with Kumble was poor taste. Most importantly it’s a shame that Kohli could not pull off a single ICC trophy in any of the format (WTC, WT20, WC2019) or even IPL Trophy despite captaining for 7 long years. That sums up the story.

It is easier to Captain Tests compared to Limited overs format. He will stand tall for his success in TEST arena as skipper and will be criticized for the lack of trophies in the limited overs arena.

Bottomline: A champion skipper without a championship win to boast.

PS: Who knows if he could introspect his short comings and come up with a better version, there could be a second wind.

What spoils the sport....

In the event of rain out, the trophy would be shared anyway. So, what is the harm in sharing the trophy when the regular game and the super overs are tied. Why try to arrive at a result based on boundaries scored by each team, when the game itself gave a signal that tie should be the impartial result. Such an iconic sporting event and such a lame finish.

Yes. Am talking about the game played between England Vs New Zealand in the Finals of ICC World Cup 2019.

NZ lost 8 wickets to reach 241 in 50 overs, while England lost all the wickets to reach 241 in 50 overs. Both teams played super over and even that tied. Eventually, England were awarded the trophy because they had hit more number of boundaries than NZ during the match. Now that don’t sound very fair.

Why not the wickets determine the winner? After all, this sport is all about runs and wickets. When the runs are tied why don’t you refer to the wicket column to arrive at the verdict?

Well, this boundary rule has been in existence for quite some time (possibly 10+ years since 2008). Only when the rules get executed, we are able to see the ugly side of it.

Tie is a common phenomenon in other sports too. Let us refer to soccer (most popular sport across the globe). Two 15 minutes of additional play time is awarded in playoff games, when the game is tied in the regular 90 minutes. Only when a result is not arrived at this point, the game goes to penalty shootout and it goes on loop until a result is arrived. Obviously, a fair proposal to cricket would be to play additional 5 overs a side game between the two tied teams before jumping to super over. Since cricket is a time-consuming sport, playing 5 overs a side could cost additional 45 minutes of play time. ODI itself a long game (7 hours of play approx.). It’s only reasonable we jump to super over right away when an ODI is tied. However, it is only fair Super overs stay in loop until a definitive result is arrived.

Could not digest the fact that the fate was sealed by the boundaries.

That Overthrow...

Again, in the Final of WC 2019, Ben Stokes was trying to run the second. A Guptill throw from the deep, hit the bat of Ben Stokes, deviated and ran across the boundary line. In the end, England were awarded 6 runs (2 for the runs made and the 4 that resulted from ball crossing the boundary). Already there is a story floating that it should be 5 runs and not 6 (backed by umpire Simon Taufel). Well, am not getting to that. I’ve something else in mind. Generally, the batsman declines to take the runs (from deviations such as these) in spirit of the game. If the spirit of cricket is to avoid these runs, why the rule should even permit runs coming out of such deviations. After all it is not a genuine overthrow by the fielder that it reached the boundary on the other side. This is a freakish accident caused by the batsman that resulted in additional runs. How does the rules permit these additional runs? It was surely not fielding team's fault. In any case, if you look at the photo, one is forced to suspect as to why Stokes took a dive too early when there is still so much ground to cover. Did he obstruct the ball on purpose? I think not. Would like to give Ben Stokes the benefit of doubt here.

Those Ambiguous LBWs...

Again, in the Finals of WC 2019, Marias Erasmus adjudged Jason Roy NOT OUT for an LBW appeal by Boult. For most of us watching the game on the TV, the default reaction was OUT and were shocked by the decision of on-field umpire. NZ reviewed. On the review, it was found that the ball pitched in line, impact in line, and good percentage of the ball hit the stumps. The verdict from third umpire came out as on-field Umpire’s Call and the batsman remained NOT OUT. That was preposterous. Had the umpire given it OUT in the first place, it would have remained OUT even after referral. Similar thing happened in the Semi Final match btw India and New Zealand, except it was the other way. Virat Kohli was adjudged OUT by the on-field umpire. For, TV viewers the initial reaction was NOT OUT. Again, the referral took side of the on-field Umpire’s Call. Despite the DRS and review options, the verdict did not have solid justification.

The popular opinion is the umpiring standards were pretty ordinary during the entire world cup. For mega events like this, incorrect decisions are very embarrassing. And they tend to change fortune of the game. My point is, why even leave dubious decisions such as LBW to the on-field umpire. Let the third umpire or technology take the ownership right away and give the verdict based on the available information/evidence.

That one review per innings...

And one review per innings in ODI games are too low. In the Semi Finals game played btw Australia and England, Jason Roy was adjudged caught behind by umpire Dharamasena. Sadly England had lost all the reviews. Replays clearly showed that Roy did not nick the ball. He was very furious. He was even fined 30% of match fee for poor behavior. If there were enough reviews available, these horrors could be very much avoided. Luckily in that match that decision did not impact the result of the game. In any other match, such errors could potentially change the outcome. My point is, if the third umpire finds substantial evidence to overturn a decision, then he should do it without a referral. This way justice is done wherever possible.

That overstepping...

And those no-balls from overstepping by bowler. Usually these kinds of no balls are verified voluntarily by third umpire when there is a referral. My point is, why not overstepping is monitored every ball. This can be done independently by a technologist for each and every ball of the game and bring to the attention of umpires whenever overstepping is done by the bowler.

Handled the ball

Per rule, “either batsman can be given out if they intentionally touch the ball with a hand that is not holding their bat”. My point is, if you are allowed to intentionally deviate the ball from hitting the stumps, how does it matter, if it is done with the hand that is holding the bat or not.

Its high time the game’s governing body review rules and put more efforts to avoid the on-field umpiring errors that spoil the sport. At the end of the day, justice denied is justice deprived.

The heart goes all the way for New Zealand.

Where Heroes become C H A M P I O N S...

The Champions Trophy fever is catching up. This is the last edition of the tournament (quite rightly). You can’t have more than one champion in the same format of the game.

Australia, Bangladesh, England and New Zealand are grouped in one pool. While India, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka in the other.

On paper it appears Australia and England will qualify from one pool in that order. India and South Africa will qualify from another pool in that order. I’m directly getting into business rather analyzing good and bad of all 8 sides and slowly narrow down to the 4 sides that are likely to make the cut. Guess what… this is Champions Trophy. Things happen pretty quickly here. Unlike the boring World Cup where it takes one month of play time before we know whom we already knew will make the cut anyway.

So, is it safe to assume India Vs England and South Africa Vs Australia Semi Finals?

I wish cricket is that simple and results show up as we walk the talk. In any case, I find it difficult to think past these four sides to qualify for Semi Finals.

So, who will be champions of this ultimate edition?

Blame my nationality, it is tempting to dream India Vs Australia finals with India winning the last edition of the event. But India, England, South Africa & Australia all look very good on paper and I guess one among the four will win this edition.

Let’s do little analysis of Bowling & Batting department for each of these teams.

Bowling

England bowling don't appear lethal. Wood, Willey, Woakes, Rashid, Stokes, Plunkett, Ali don’t appear to have the potent to seal the deal for England. Neither of their pacers are popular for express pace or swing bowling or death bowling. Even Ali/Rashid are not known for many match winning spells for their slow bowling.

South Africa bowling comprises Rabada, Morkel, Morris, Tahir, Duminy, Maharaj. This unit certainly look better than England. Not sure Morkel is still in his prime, Rabada is still very young. Tahir is probably at his peak. It is disappointing not to see steaming Steyn leading the bowling quadrant. The bowling unit is ok, but not great.

Australia - Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood, Pattinson are simply fantastic. Assuming 3 play and 1 sit out, Australia has the luxury to rotate and keep their fast bowlers fresh. Henriques, Maxwell, Zampa should be good compliment. Zampa could end up being their weak link. But you never know.

India - Shami, Yadav, B Kumar, Bumrah, Pandya, Jadeja, Ashwin offers a good variety compared to the other 3 teams. Shami & Yadav are known for pace, Kumar for swing, Bumrah for death bowling, Ashwin & Jadeja are at peak of their slow bowling careers. With Pandya’s compliment, India’s arguably the no.1 bowling side on paper.

I prefer to rate India, Australia, South Africa and England in that order in the bowling department.

Batting

India - Rohit, Dhawan/Rahane, Kohli, Yuvi, Karthik, Dhoni, Pandya... will be the lineup for most of the games. It’s been an established unit for quiet sometime, but there is sure cloud cover over. Yuvi’s form is patchy, Rahane’s is awful (I doubt he will be a default starter in the XI), Dhoni’s finishing skills is under question, with Dhawan only god knows how he is able to get so many amount of opportunities despite repeated failures, Rohit Sharma has been out of action for a while. Kohli and Jadav are in form players at the moment (I discount their IPL form). However, Dinesh Karthik comes into scene after tremendous success in the domestic season. Can he translate his domestic success to international success? Only time will tell. I would have preferred an inspired selection of Pant over Dhawan or even Rahane. As I said, lots of cloud cover over India’s batting.

England - Roy, Hales, Root, Morgan, Stokes, Buttler, Ali will make up the batting department. The ODI side has been doing well under Morgan in the past few years.

Australia - Warner, Finch, Lynn/Head, Smith, Maxwell, Henriques should make up the batting mainstay. Warner, Lynn and Maxwell are all ticking time bombs. This unit appears to be the most dangerous of all the 4.

South Africa - Amla, De Kock, Duplessis, DeVilliers, Duminy, Miller, Morris reads a dream team. This is probably the best batting side of all the 4.

My ratings would be - South Africa, Australia, England & India in that order in the batting department.

But then result of the game is dependent on all units (batting/bowling/fielding) working in sync. So to punt on a single side to win this edition of the event is difficult. However, I personally see England weakest of the four (considering batting & bowling).

India look great on bowling while South Africa on batting and Australia looks dangerous in both fronts.

Statistically, odds are stacked heavily against South Africa to win an ICC event (unless South Africa decides to rewrite history this time).

It’s got to be India or Australia.

Bottom line: Let me shout "India" for now.

I know I’ve been hibernating for way too long. It’s not that I’m not watching cricket or feeling complacent to write or anything. It is just that I found something way too interesting that put me unfortunately in a state of hibernation. Nevertheless, I always love writing and love cricket even more.

Couple of years or so ago, one of my friend (Raj Sundaram) and a cricket mate of me at Cricket League of New Jersey who also runs his own Corporation (Hexacorp) approached me to come up with a product for administering cricket leagues. According to him, cricket at club level is managed by cricket leagues and there is no universal software product (or in other words standard product in the market) that aids the administration of the league. So, he wanted to come up with a Cricket ERP (something like SAP for manufacturing, Tally for Accounting) that addresses the needs of a Cricket League to run the show.

By all means, I’ve no idea what made him to choose me (probably my passion for cricket following) to design this product. Anyways, I got started there. The requirement is pretty clear. We need a software product (ideally universal one) that aids the administration of a cricket league. The product should also cater to the needs of the clubs that participate in the league. Last, but not the least, the players who are part of the league should be benefited. Added to that we need the product to setup a good communication platform for the League – Team – Players and any other parties involved in the setup.

After few weeks of wandering in LALA land, came up with a decent idea. The concept goes like this “What if CricInfo runs on Facebook”. Ideally CricInfo is the encyclopedia of every professional cricketer in the planet. Facebook is arguably the no.1 social networking platform. What if there is a product like CricInfo (ideally CricInfo of club cricketers) that sits on a Facebook like Social Networking platform. Isn’t it exciting? CricketSocial was born here with this concept.

Now, I would like to add little more about CricketSocial to put some perspective. Well, CricketSocial is made of 3 key entities - Amateur Cricket Players (Cricket Buddies), Cricket Clubs and Cricket Leagues. Now each of these entities has a need. We are looking to address those needs @ CricketSocial.

A decade ago, an amateur cricket player’s cricket scores confine to memories of few minds that remember the game or remain as paper cuttings published in the daily news magazine. With CricketSocial, every amateur club cricketer will have a biography to show the world. All their scorecards (irrespective of the team or league they represent) are covered in CricketSocial.

If a person relocates (even continents), the person will now be able to resume their cricket life seamlessly by finding cricket leagues, cricket teams, cricket merchants, other cricket buddies living around them instantly at CricketSocial. So, finding Cricket is not tough any more in a new place.

A player can turn all their scorecards (biography) into a cricket book with a click of a button. The cricket book can help to build a resume for a cricketer or even decorate the shelf of their home as a souvenir.

The product also has host of other rich features like Event Management, Player Compare, Cricket Book, Team Management and League Management to complete the circle.

Scoring of the cricket match are done live using a Cricket Social Scoring App (IOS - iPhone/iPad). As the scorer of the match scores in the App, the same will be updated instantly in cricketsocial.com Portal (if the device is equipped with active internet connection). Fans and other interested buddies can follow the scores immediately from wherever they are.

After lots of hardships of several individuals and years of working, the product finally saw the light of the day on 24^th Apr 2016 (Sachin Tendulkar’s Bday).

The product is conceived after a noble idea. The dream is certainly big. Hopefully CricketSocial gains traction and the cricket playing public make the most of it. And someday in the future, CricketSocial will be able to tell the story of every international cricketer before they made it to International Cricket. Ideally, the story of how Sachin Tendulkar became Sachin Tendulkar. Sounds great isn’t it.

டைரக்டர், "அது மெயின் காமெரா, ஆனா எப்பவுமே 2 சைட் காமெரா ஓடிக்கிட்டே தான் இருக்கும். அப்போ தான் நிகழ்ச்சியோட "மேக்கிங்" அப்படின்னு சொல்லி ஒரு இரண்டு வாரம் ஓட்ட வசதியா இருக்கும். இப்போ நீங்க வாய் கிழிய நல்லா பேசினதை அப்படியே போடாம பிட்டு பிட்டா போடுவோம். நடுநடுவே நம்ம கேடி கண்ணீர் மல்க மனமுருக இரண்டு வரி பேசி கண்ணீர் விடுவாங்க. மக்கள் நீங்க ஏதோ கேடியை ரேப் பண்ணிட்டதாவே நினைச்சுக்குவாங்க.

நொந்தபடியே போன பிச்சை எதிரில் நின்ற கேடியைப் பார்த்து, "என்னம்மா, இப்படி பண்றீங்களேம்மா?" என்று கூறி வெளியேறுகிறார்.

The Big Semis...

Here we are at the Semi Finals of Cricket World Cup 2015. As expected New Zealand, India, Australia and South Africa made it deservingly. I’ve no apprehension using the word deservingly. After all, all the 4 Quarter Finals were pretty much one sided, except losing teams in each of these games, created few moments of glory, that failed to last long. The performance of Wahab Riyaz was the best of all.

Anyways, these were the top 4 teams right from the word go, hence the reason they are all here for the Semi-Final battle. Don’t know who will go all the way at the moment.

I was casually reviewing the previews (Preview 1, Preview 2) that I wrote last month before the start of the WC. This is just to see how much things changed from then and now. Interestingly there is not much of change. And at the moment, it does look like South Africa Vs Australia finals could hold waters. They both are certainly the two strong teams on paper (keyword is PAPER). They already have a loss or two under their belt (just to say that the monkey is out of the hat). And, they are facing India and New Zealand with whom they have very good records in ODI’s and also in WC’s (previous editions) as well.

Do I want an Australia Vs South Africa Finals?

Nope. Certainly not!!! My heart truly beats for India Vs New Zealand finals. India, because my home country. New Zealand because they have been a popular underdog side (I didn’t mean they are an underdog in this WC) and would be very happy if they lift it. Oh yeah, will be happy for South Africans too, for breaking the chokers jinx. But South Africa stands last in the line.

Let us get into serious analysis.

South Africa Vs New Zealand

Of all the odds, who expected Martin Guptill to score a double century in the Quarter Finals against West Indies? Not me for sure. Now, he has become a new star of the side. The point is - you see a new star emerging every day to face the battle when it is not McCullum / Williamson or the bowlers. So, it could be Anderson, Elliot or even Ronchi against South Africa in the Semis. Despite New Zealand batting being brittle, their bowling have been fantastic (Oh yeah, I’ve no qualms using the word brittle. We witnessed what happened against Scotland and Australia). Except for Bangladesh in the group match, New Zealand managed to all out all the oppositions they played so far. Success of the team is largely defined by the bowlers with Boult, Southee and Vettori top notch. New Zealand definitely stands tall in this department.

On paper, I’ve no hesitation calling South Africa because they are a better side (again on paper). They also broke the jinx of losing out in the playoffs by winning the Quarter Finals. Amla at the top is sheer genius. De Kock is finding his feet. Du Plessis is their next anchor. And then De Villiers, Miller and Duminy are there to wreak havoc when they get a good start. Except India in the group match, they have bowled out all the opposition. This is without the World’s best bowler (Steyn) firing so far. You can imagine what happens when he starts doing his little show with the ball. Already Morkel and Tahir are in good form. So, I’ve no trouble putting my money on South Africa and I’ve no problem ignoring the big CHOKERS tag they have. But, heart beats for New Zealand.

India Vs Australia

Traditionally Australians have been very good side. I don’t want to analyze too much about them except I wish to point out that – their shortness was exposed by New Zealand and Wahab Riaz of Pakistan. So, they are a crack-able side. The question is when or who will crack them up?

Now, who would have been so optimistic of India’s chances prior to the start of the WC? They are not doing great in the ODI’s in the past year or so (especially in the bilateral series). Let’s start from the ODI series in SA in Dec’13. India lost the series 2-0, lost to New Zealand (4-0) in Jan’14 (played at NZ). Failed to qualify for the Asia Cup finals that held in Feb – Mar’ 14. But they beat Bangladesh 2-0 in May’14. Then they went on to beat England 3-1 in Aug – Sep 14 (played at England). And then, they failed to qualify the finals of the Tri Series in Jan 2015 (played at Australia between India, England and Australia). That pretty much summarizes that India is not having any dream run in ODI’s. But then, are they this bad?

Certainly not!!! If you’ve followed India teams closely, you pretty much know that they are big tournament team. Prior to the start of the WC they looked ordinary. Once the tournament began, you could see them rock and roll. They are probably the only team in the entire tournament to bowl out all the opposition they have played thus far. Yet Indian bowlers remain under the radar. One of the pre-tournament star (Virat Kohli), is yet to fire (Oh yeah he had a century). I've no trouble calling for a “KOHLI TIME baby”.

It is my personal institution that Kohli will repeat a Sachin. I’m sure many of you may have watched Sachin’s Sharjah Storm in the 90s. Two back to back matches against mighty Australia – one to qualify India for the finals and the next to win it.

Just to spice it up let me share few stats that I had observed.

In the 2011 WC played in subcontinent, only one team outside subcontinent made it to SF (that is New Zealand). 2015 WC played outside subcontinent, only one team from subcontinent made it to the SF (that is India).

If you try to make a prediction - building on this logic, you will find India exiting in the SF of 2015 WC (NZ failed to go past SF in the 2011 WC). I know this is very disheartening to read for Indian fans. Never mind, when there is an odd against us, there is another odd in our favor too.

Let us date back few more years to the 1992 WC played in Australia/New Zealand. In the 1992 WC, you will find only one sub-continent team (Pakistan) made it to the SF. Guess who won that edition???

Bottom line: Bleeding Blueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

The Playoffs are here...

After a month long cricket, we are now at the playoffs of CWC2015. Except for England, the rest of the test playing nations made it to the Quarters deservingly. A stake for West Indies in playoffs, the word “DESERVING” is not a fitting. It would have been very apt for somebody like Ireland. But then cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties. It was cruel to England. It was cruel to Ireland too. But, Bangladesh punched above their waist to be here.

Moving on, the big 8 was expected to make it to the play offs. As you see, one missed out the party already.

A majority predicted (including yours truly) that New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and India (I was not very sure of India at the beginning) will make it to the Semi Finals. Let’s see if that hold waters?

New Zealand

All along the group stages it was McCullum, Williamson and the bowlers. Towards the fag end of the group stages, Guptill and Taylor were among runs. Is this the sign of “Rest of Kiwi batters” joining the party? I want like to think so. At some point, I’m hoping Elliot, Anderson and Ronchi to join the runs.

The game against West Indies in the Quarters should be a fascinating. West Indies are known to blow hot and cold. Taylor and Holder are in good form while the West Indies batsman hasn’t been consistent. The form of New Zealand with the backing of home crowd, New Zealand should sail past West Indies. I punt New Zealand to play South Africa in the Semi Finals.

Australia

Australia on the other hand is not having the best of tournament despite being the best team on paper. One match washed off, failed to NZ for reasons well known, trying different combinations in every game...

Somewhere I get an unsettling feeling with Australia. No matter how unsettling it is Australians are certainly poised to go past Pakistan for an India – Australia clash in the Semi Finals.

South Africa

Prior to the start of the tournament, it looked like South Africa had one of the best bowling attacks. Surprisingly they haven't fired like they want to. Don't know if they will be coming to party anytime soon.

So winning Sri Lanka in QF doesn't look like a walk in the park. But then we all have witnessed in the past that 1992 Pakistan, 1999 Australia, 2011 India – they all had a choppy start before they went on to win the trophy. Probably South Africa should embrace this choppiness and start addressing the weakness for the next leg.

Playing De Kock at the top is forcing South Africa to start on the back foot right away. And Steyn not in the firing line is the second weakness in my perspective.

Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies

Right from the start of the tournament I don't have big hopes on Sri Lanka, West Indies and Pakistan. West Indies and Pakistan had lived up to the reputation by delivering subpar cricket, while Sri Lanka surprised.

So, it is normal to think that Sri Lanka can choke South Africa in Quarters, but I’m not. Pakistan and West Indies could be end of their campaign in the Quarter Finals.

India

The good thing is... India's batting mainstays haven't lived up to their reputation or in other words come to terms like Amla or Sangakara or DeVilliers etc. Already QF hurdle is cleared by Bangladesh. So we are looking at 2 good matches for Kohli, Sharma and Rahane to lift the cup!!! Don't it sound cheesy???

We don’t know what will happen, except we expect our permutations and combinations to work per our desires.

உலகக் கோப்பையை தமிழ் வர்ணனையுடன் பார்ப்பது வித்யாசமான அனுபவமாக இருந்தாலும் சுவாரஸ்யம் குறைவாக உள்ளது போல் தோன்றுகிறது. ஒருவேளை காலம் காலமாக ஆங்கிலத்திலேயே கேட்டுப் பழகியதும் சிறந்த வர்ணனையாளர்கள் இல்லாததும் காரணமாக இருக்கலாம். அதனால் தமிழ் வர்ணனையை சுவாரஸ்யமாக்க நாம் சில பிரபலங்களை அழைத்தோம்.

ஹிந்தி வர்ணனைக்கு அமிதாப் பச்சன் வந்தது போல் ஏன் தமிழ் பிரபலங்கள் வரக்கூடாது?

India and New Zealand on roll

New Zealand Vs Australia turned out to be a cracker of a contest. That game revealed a lot of things. First things first – Australia is beatable. But then the game revealed other nuances too. We will come to it one after the other.

To start with, Australia batted with lots of arrogance. Probably due to the fact that each one of Warner, Finch, Watson, Smith, Clarke, Maxwell etc., are all a match winner of their own and they all decided to take the game on their hands without applying patience even when wickets were tumbling. They may call it the Australian attitude, but certainly looked stupid. At the same time, there is no denial that the duo of Boult and Vettori bowled exceedingly well and brought Kiwis right back into the game after a rocketing start by Australia. Except for last man Cummins, most of Australians played little immature. One would pity the injustice to George Bailey for losing his place for no fault of his. Well, what can you do? Clarke knows this is the best chance to lead his side to title triumph and he is certainly not going to allow somebody like Bailey to steal the glory.

Between, the batting arrogance resulted in Australia bundling to 151. Not in dreams anyone would have guessed it. It is what it is. Cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties. Expectedly McCullum began in ruthless fashion. One would expect Kiwis to finish the game losing barely 1 or 2 wickets. Yet again there was twist in tale. Kiwis crossed the line with only 1 wicket to spare. Funny you would think. Well the match proved the point that Australian bowling attack can turn a tiny total to a mountain. So, imagine what happens when they put sizable total on the board. This surely turns Australia into a very strong contender to win the World Cup. By now Australians must have learnt their lesson to stay level headed at all times.

England

I guess I’m being wrong with high expectations on England. At the moment, I look dumb for claiming them to be a dark horse of this tournament. I had my reasons.

They were never a great batting side in the first place. Certainly a good bowling side with the likes of Anderson, Broad and Finn. They were not expected to beat Australia and New Zealand. But then did not expect to lose to Sri Lanka either. A total of 300 should have been more than sufficient for the trio of Anderson, Broad and Finn. It is the same venue where Southee picked 7fer against England. Sri Lanka made a mockery of the 300 total posted by England. Anderson, Finn, Broad all looked dead ducks to the likes of Sangakara and Thirumanna. Well, Morgan takeover is not working.

At the moment, it appears to be a clean road for India, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand to the Semi Finals with India and New Zealand on a roll.

South Africa seems to have found a new love for 400 runs. With De Kock struggling, Rossouw firing, wont be surprised, Duminy replaces De Kock while De Villiers don the glove job from here.

Teams like Pakistan are fighting the demons of Ireland and Zimbabwe for a spot in playoffs. West Indies on the other hand blowing hot and cold!!! Is it England or Bangladesh for QF?

A Strong Statement...

India Vs South Africa

With 130 runs win over South Africa, India made a strong statement. Yeah, we are not pushovers in this WC. More importantly, we are here to defend it !!!

I had my judgment reserved despite resounding victory over arch-rivals Pakistan. After all, Pakistan isn’t a great side in this this edition and India defeating Pakistan was always on the cards. But India defeating South Africa wasn’t expected. I’m sure even the most optimistic supporter would buy me. And here, India beat South Africa (one of the favorites to win this edition of the tournament), very convincingly. The message is now very loud and clear. From here on, it’s all about how any other team can snatch the trophy from India.

Coming back, India played extremely good against South Africa. After the early loss of Rohit Sharma to a poor run out, Kohli walked in to join Dhawan. Kohli curbed his aggressive instinct only to stitch a 120 runs partnership with Dhawan that laid the foundation for India’s big total. Kohli played a classic anchor for his 46 that included just 3 fours, which is very unusual of him. On the other hand, Dhawan, was altogether playing in a different planet. Did I crib before for selecting Dhawan? Well, I’m here happily chewing my words. That was a classic Dhawan show. Upper cuts, smashing square cuts, gorgeous cover drives, thudding pulls… he was truly on a zone to pile 137 runs. If that wasn’t enough, Rahane delivered a beauty towards the latter half of Indian Innings to score quick fire 79. For the solid foundation laid by Dhawan, Kohli and Rahane, it would have been fitting, if India ended up with a total of 325+. Never mind, 307 isn’t small total on MCG. South Africa losing was only a formality. But the way India pushed South Africa to surrender inside 175 is THE STATEMENT. India is the team to watch out from here!!!

Pakistan Vs West Indies

Good to see West Indies win this match and come back into the tournament strongly. Pakistan on the other hand put a very pitiable display. I wish Pakistan take these defeats into stride and put better show in the remaining encounters. Honestly, it is difficult to stay optimistic on Pakistan chances. There is no point in Pakistan playing with fear. It is time to overcome the anxiety and start playing Akmal - Afridi at the top for any change of fortune. Without any rearguard action, I wouldn’t be surprised if Pakistan finishes behind Zimbabwe. Hopefully they turn into party poopers at some point in the tournament.

West Indies Vs Zimbabwe

At the time when Gayle was criticized for no show, here he delivered the first double century of the WC. A rampage that started late after 35 overs when Gayle just reached the century. Samuels gave good company and he made his presence felt with a century. Good to see West Indies reclaiming their composure after the upset over Ireland. It would be very interesting to watch West Indies Vs South Africa. I’m not sure if Bravo is ready by then.

New Zealand Vs England

Nobody expected this game to be so one sided. England fell like a deck of cards to Southee’s late swingers. No batsman was willing to put their head down and support Root at the other end. In the end, England bundled to a paltry 125. After Southee’s swingers, one would be tempted to expect an Anderson magic. McCullum completely took him to cleaners was a laugh riot.

I would say, it is little harsh on England to start their campaign against Australia and New Zealand, the two top sides of the pool. So defeats in these two matches were expected. The manner in which England were defeated was a tough pill to swallow. With Bangladesh game against Australia washed out, Bangladesh earned a point which they were supposed to lose. The game between England and Bangladesh will more or less decide who will proceed to the playoffs. Both pools have started to excite with each game making a purpose.

The Cricket World Cup 2015 begins...

The CWC 2015 started with the bang. Full houses for the NZ – SL, AUS – ENG and IND – PAK games. All the three games produced expected results. The winners (New Zealand, Australia and India) in their respective games delivered convincing victories.

Australia - England

Australia was momentarily brought to earth when England quickly pegged the wickets of Warner, Watson and Smith. But then the steep batting line up proved to be too much for England to hammer down. Finch, Bailey, Maxwell, Marsh and Haddin made sure Australia posted a mammoth 330+ on that huge MCG ground. England coming second was meagerly a formality.

For records, Finch scored century. The first century of the tournament while Finn bagged the first 5fer including a hat-trick in the final over. Clarke sat out for the opener. If Watson extends his poor run for another game or two and if Marsh continues to succeed like the way he is doing currently, it would not be too long before Australia flips Watson for Clarke. At the moment, Clock ticking for Watson.

New Zealand – Sri Lanka

One has to say, it is unfortunate for Sri Lanka to start their WC campaign against New Zealand.

India – Pakistan

The match hardly lived up to the hype. Pakistan barely put up a show against India. Kohli yet again hogged the lime light with a timely century. Shikar Dhawan, who has been under scanner for a while, sealed his spot in the XI by delivering in the game that matters. Raina made the most use of the weak Pakistan attack with his onslaught.

Now that Pakistan lost to India, they should revisit their strategy to get the campaign back on track. No business for Younis Khan to open the innings. It should be Shezad and Jameshed opening and Umar akmal should bat at No.3. Also there is no room for Umar Akmal to do wicket keeping. By any means, their bowling still looks brittle. The game against West Indies should be a good test for both Pakistan and West Indies.

West Indies - Ireland

This was the first upset of the WC. If you could foresee, this was always on the cards. I would prefer to blame the board. The board failed to pick the best possible squad for a global event simply because it could not sort out the difference of opinion (remember mid series pull out by WI players from India Tour). On top of it, the board named a kid as the Captain to be their ‘yes sir’. After all, the board must have thought that their best side is not going to win the WC. If they mix and match, the side could still make it to the playoffs. And one good day for any of their batsman/bowlers, WI could be playing the SF. And then everybody is proud of their little team’s achievement for making it this far. Obviously, things not going according to the plan.

The match up against Pakistan makes it very interesting. Two vulnerable teams playing against each other. This should be fun to watch.

Zimbabwe Vs South Africa

Everybody expected a meek surrender of Zimbabwe against South Africa. Interestingly, Zimbabwe pulled a rabbit out and was ready to upset the giant when South Africa scorecard read 83/4. Thanks to brilliant centuries from Miller and Duminy that saved the day for South Africa with a total of 339. One would assume Zimbabwe would put a pity display chasing 339. Interestingly, Zimbabwe surprised with a batting performance 190/2 at the end of 30 overs. At this point the match was evenly poised. After Masakadza was dismissed at 80, the rest of the unit failed to take the challenge and finished at 277. Nevertheless it was a good fight by Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Vs UAE

The performance against the fellow African nation must have given the confidence to chase the target of 287 successfully against UAE. Probably the best match of the tournament so far. This rises Zimbabwe’s hopes of making it to the playoffs.

Games ahead…

After India beat Pakistan the confidence of the team and also the faith of the followers must have sky rocketed. To me, the match against South Africa is the real litmus test. This match will reveal as to how steep India can run into the tournament. If India can upset South Africa convincingly, then India can certainly fancy their chances of going past QF or even SF stages of the tournament. May be win finals??? That’s far fetch at the moment!!!

The failure of WI to overcome Ireland has certainly opened up Pool B. Zimbabwe’s fight against South Africa and Zimbabwe’s successful chase of UAE total bring Zimbabwe into contention. Of course, Ireland has already upset WI and is ahead of the race. Vulnerable Pakistan and West Indies in Pool B spice up the story. Between Zimbabwe, Ireland, Pakistan, West Indies, two of them should seal the bottom half of Pool B. Pakistan Vs West Indies match up should throw some light on the standings. If Pakistan can beat West Indies (which I expect to happen) then the fight for the last spot would be between Ireland and Zimbabwe alongside Pakistan as the third team. However, If West Indies can overcome Pakistan, Pool B gets exciting.

Scotland made a mockery of New Zealand when New Zealand lost as many 4 wickets inside 30 runs chasing a total of 142. In the end New Zealand chased the target losing 7 wickets. This should spice the game against England.

Cricket World Cup 2015 Preview - Part 2

South Africa

There is never a debate about South Africa making it to the playoffs. The question is where/when they will choke? Can they get past the demon and emerge winner in this edition is the surprise left.

As far as the combination goes, they are simply terrific. Amla, DeKock, DuPlessis, DeVilliers, Duminy, Miller, Philander, Steyn, Morkel, Tahir makes them a wonderful side. Tahir can be touch expensive, but then the big grounds of Australia should do its bit to help him among wickets. Surely a Jacques Kallis in the lineup, could have delivered that final punch. But then the World is probably gearing up for next generation of cricketers and this WC could be the start of a new fairy tale stories.

SA is positioned in Pool B alongside India, West Indies, Pakistan, UAE, Ireland and Zimbabwe. South Africa is expected to top the group and most likely face England/Sri Lanka in the QF. Another day, England or Sri Lanka is walk over for SA, but then in WC with the strong chokers tag, it is anybody’s guess when SA takes on any team in play off stage. South Africa would prefer to play Sri Lanka in QF for a spot in SF. I punt South Africa to make it to SF.

New Zealand

New Zealand has not disappointed (if you set your expectations correct) in WC outings. 75, 79, 92, 99, 2007, 2011 they made it to the SF. 96 and 2003 they exited in QF. Probably the 92 version is the only version they looked real threat to win the trophy after England. However, Pakistan ended up winning the edition was the ultimate climax.

This Kiwi squad is looking good on paper for a spot in SF. McCullum and Williamson has hit a purple patch. Taylor at 4 and finishers like Anderson and Ronchi should make a decent combination. It would have been good if New Zealand retained Jimmy Neesham in the squad. Southee, Boult, Mclenghan, Milne are looking fantastic pace quartet. I’m sure 3 will certainly feature in the XI at any time.

New Zealand is positioned alongside Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Scotland in Pool A. New Zealand is expected to finish second in the Pool. So they will most likely take on Pakistan/West Indies in the QF. WI without Pollard and Bravo is certainly a weak unit. If it is Pakistan, New Zealand would like to settle scores for the 92 debacle. All in all New Zealand should roll into SF comfortably.

West Indies

With Bravo and Pollard out of the World Cup, I certainly have no hopes in this side. The board should have realized the importance of participating in a global event. What fun if you don’t send your best side to an event of this magnitude?

West Indies should make it to QF. Gayle storm and some good outings from Samuels is all I’m looking forward to.

Pakistan

They have been a dark horse in any cricket tournament. It is difficult to predict who performs when and at what time. From nowhere, Pakistan keeps producing match winners. Again there is no doubt they will make it to QF stage. Beyond QF, I doubt this team making any inroads.

Ahmad Shezad, Nasir Jamshed, Umar Akmal, Afridi are the players I’m personally looking forward to. It would have been terrific if Pakistan featured Junaid Khan and Saeed Ajmal. It is Shame to see both these players missing out. We know the reasons as why they miss out. Wasim Akram yesterday on commentary against England (warm up) felt that Pakistan missed out Sohail Tanvir, Safraz Ahmed and Shoaib Malik. I’m sure he knows better about their resources. But Pakistan Vs New Zealand QF should be very exciting. But kiwis will settle score in that case.

Sri Lanka

There is a nice balance of youth and experience. Sangakara, Jayarwardane, Dilshan, Malinga, Herath. And then there is Mendis, Chandimal, Thirumanne, Kulasekara, Senanayake. This is a classic unit to play cricket in sub-continent. Outside the sub-continent, no hope.

Generally, they have been a good side since 1996 WC. Not this time.

England

England is my dark horse of this tournament. Their bowling unit looks settled with Anderson, Broad, Finn, Tredwell, Jordon. It is the question of the batting talents coming to party. Morgan, Moeen Ali, Root, Bell, Hales, Ballance, Bopara are all good talents for sure. Surely inclusion of Kevin Pieterson, Cook and Greame Swann could have made England a side to beat. Well, there is no point discussing what is not there.

We just have to hope that players like Gary Ballance, Alex Hales, Bopara rise to the occasion. Looking forward to Root show this WC.

If India finish 2 and England finish 3, England has better odds of making it to the SF. But then, it will hit ICC's revenue bucket big time if India miss out in QF.

Australia

“Save your best for the last”. Australia is undoubtedly the best side of this WC. One would truly envy the composition of this side. Warner, Finch, Watson, Smith, Clarke/Bailey, Maxwell, Haddin, Johnson, Faulkner, Hasselwood, Cummins, Marsh, Doherty, Starc.

This is the best that money can buy you. During the previous edition of WC, India broke the jinx by winning the WC, despite being a host. So the jinx is already broken.

I personally don’t see or a need for Australia to play Smith, Clarke and Bailey in the same side. Smith is easily better than the other two in the list. The management is left to choose between Clarke and Bailey in the XI. Personally, I've never felt Clarke as a great one day cricketer. I would like to go Bailey way. But then, I've no idea how Australia think tank look at this problem. Their spin department is probably little weak. I think it should not be huge deal as the World Cup is not played in sub-continent.

Anyways, this appears to be Australia’s World Cup. An Australia – South Africa finals should be a fitting World Cup finale. If there is one side that is well equipped to challenge Australia in all departments, it is South Africa. Also history says, Australia – South Africa produce great cricket contests. If that happens, I will be rooting for South Africa to break the jinx.

PS: About minnows, oh yeah, there will be an odd upset here and there. But no way any minnow is making it to the play offs. ICC learnt their lessons from 2007 WC. 2011 was only a prelude to the current format.

Cricket World Cup 2015 Preview - Part 1

Hardly 3 days left to the beginning of another edition of Cricket World Cup (CWC). Almost after 23 years, the WC is returning to Australia/New Zealand soils. I fondly remember the 1992 edition of WC, the first time a CWC was played in colored clothes. As a matter of fact, I still feel the jerseys designed during the 1992 edition are the best so far. It would have been fantastic, if the current WC is also played in the same format as the 1992 edition with the same jersey template except for different colors adopted by teams currently. Back then, 9 teams played against each other one time. The top 4 qualified for Semi Finals. And, India did not make it. India had a horrid WC’92 except for beating Pakistan. Javed Mianded mocking Kiran More was a funny incident.

Other memories include, Ajay Jadeja running forward, bending down to snap a low one near ankles was a visual treat. Indians were not great fielders those days and India largely fielded a very young side then. Mark Greatbatch as pinch hitting opener for New Zealand was a huge success. For the first time I witnessed a spinner (Dipak Patel) bowling with the new ball. India tried pinch hitter by sending Kapil Dev to open the batting with Srikanth. That move backfired though. Also Jonty Rhodes running out of Inzamam was classic. And of course nobody can forget the infamous England win over South Africa on D/L method. It was a pity South Africa lost the match when rain intervened and D/L target read 22 runs of 1 ball as final equation. That South Africa exit felt very painful at that time. And then they went onto become chokers is a different story.

So, CWC in Australia/New Zealand certainly brings back fond memories of the earlier edition. Memories are always fond, for now we will move on.

Most of the teams are currently working out combinations both in the warm up matches and also in recently played ODIs prior to WC.

From my perspective let’s see what are everyone chances.

India

India is probably the most advantageous side after the hosts Australia and New Zealand. They have been playing here for the past 2 months or so, certainly well acclimatized to conditions. Also there is not too much of face change between the Test and ODI side, which means they are much settled squad. In terms of India’s chances, I will be elated if India could even make it to the Semi Finals. I’ve no idea why selectors are backing Dhawan this far. It would have made more sense to have in-form Vijay over Dhawan in the side and Yuvraj over Jadeja (considering Yuvi has been doing reasonably well in the ongoing Ranji season). But then, it is difficult to pick selectors brains. At the outset, it looks like Rohit and Rahane will open and Dhawan deserves axe. Kohli should/will go back to his No.3 slot. In the warm up match over Afghanistan, India played Raina at 4. It looked good ploy with a left hander coming at 4 especially, if Dhawan not playing. Rayudu could fit at No.5, while Dhoni, Jadeja/Axar, Ashwin, Binny/Bhuvi, Yadav, Shami/Mohit to follow. The World is looking forward to Kohli, but I strongly punt on Rohit Sharma to rock and roll this WC.

India is positioned in Pool B alongside South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan, UAE, Ireland and Zimbabwe. India is expected to come second or third in the group. They would prefer to come second as they could avoid facing Australia/New Zealand in the QF. In that event of India coming second in the pool means India is likely to take on Sri Lanka or England depending on who finishes 3 in the other pool. If India plays Sri Lanka in QF, then it is advantage India. If India faces England, then the recent outings against England in the tri-series don’t augur well.

By any means, I don’t see this Indian team having enough ammo to get past SF. Thanks to the resources of the bowling department, certainly not very convincing for a cup winning side. Also prefer to see a strong match winning candidate like Yuvraj/Sehwag at No.4. Dhoni can step in at No.4 and take that role, but then India will lack a finisher. Guys like Jadeja and Binny dont have that caliber to be a finisher in these Australian conditions.

Personally I would rejoice if India gets past QF. If India fails to make it to QF, Dhoni retires from all forms of cricket.

Beware of Bouncers

Cricket is a fantastic sport that is known to give life to people. At the moment, the sport has taken away a wonderful life. May the soul of Phil Hughes rest in peace.

And so here is an important series against Australia commencing in an entirely different backdrop than usual. The buildup to the series has been subdued (understandably). But I’m sure the intensity isn’t.

Dhoni was supposed to play from the second match of the series (a thumb injury forcing him to rest the first test). Now that the schedule of the series is altered due to Hughes demise, the first match is actually beginning at the time when the second match should be starting. So one would be tempted to believe Dhoni will be leading the side. And it appears he is also fit from the outside. Interestingly, Kohli is leading the charge for the first test, while Dhoni continues to rehabilitate considering all important World Cup is round the corner.

I read the script entirely different. Selectors are resting Dhoni sighting injury grounds so as they can try a new skipper. The call for Dhoni’s head has been growing loud for a while. At the same time, the idea of handing over the Captaincy to Kohli, is little premature, since he is not cemented his place in the test side except for the fact that he is an exceptional talent. At this time, giving one off Test Captaincy would be a good idea to evaluate Kohli to see if he is actually ready for the job. If Kohli comes out in flying colors (ideally a win) there is a good chance he will be asked to lead the side reminder of the series (After all, you don’t win against Aussies on fluke at their den). If Kohli fails to make an impact as a Captain in the First Test, Dhoni will return to the side as Captain starting from the Second Test of the Series. By all means, the Captaincy will not change hands hastily (either way). (In my following of Cricket, handing/revoking of Captaincy to/from Tendulkar wasn't handled well. Probably BCCI/Selectors are trying to avoid such occurrences). Let’s watch how it all pans out.

Coming to the starting lineup of the first test, one would be tempted to believe Dhawan may not feature in the XI. After a sling of failures abroad, Dhawan lost his place to Gambir in England after 3^rd Test. So, Dhawan should not be a sure starter in the XI. If Dhoni was captaining today, I wouldn’t be surprised at the debut of L Rahul. But with Kohli donning duties, I doubt he would experiment a new comer right away. From that aspect Dhawan should retain his place. A technically correct Indian line up would be something as follows.

Vijay, Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, R Sharma, Saha, Ashwin, Shami Ahmed, Ishant Sharma and Varun Aaron.

But it would not be a bad idea if India fields

Vijay, Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, R Sharma, Saha, Ishant, Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav and Karn Sharma

This is my reasoning for the above side. The top six batsmen take their place followed by wicket keeper Saha. It is in the bowling department I would like to see some changes. After all, test matches are won by taking 20 wickets more than anything. So, India should go all out in this department. Both quicks (Aaron and Yadav) should play. As a matter of fact, Yadav had a fantastic series the last time he visited Australia. Ishant is a default choice for the 3^rd seamer and India should surprise by fielding leg spinner Karn Sharma ahead of Ashwin or Jadeja. Both Ashwin and Jadeja have been very ordinary in abroad conditions so far. So a leggie could make the impact that India is looking from the sping department.

Bottom line: Awaiting the reaction of the first bouncer.

"ஓகே, நான் உன்னை காதலிக்கறேன், நீ?"

"எதுவா இருந்தாலும் எங்கப்பா கிட்ட பேசிக்கோ" என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டே வண்டியைக் கிளப்பினாள்.

"எனக்கொரு பதில் சொல்லிட்டுப் போ"

"மண்டு, அதான் அப்பா கிட்டே பேசுன்னு சொல்றேன்ல" என்று கூறிவிட்டு நிற்காமல் விரைந்தாள்.

காட்சி 2:

"என்னடா மச்சான், இன்னிக்கு ஒரு பந்து கூட பேட்ல படவே இல்லையே, எதாவது பிரச்சினையா?" கிரிக்கெட் வலை பயிற்சியில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்த கணேஷிடம் கேட்டான் அஜய். இருவரும் கிரிக்கெட் நண்பர்கள்.

"சொல்றேன்னு தப்பா நினைச்சுக்காதே, வேற வழியே இல்லை, கோர்ட் படி ஏறித்தான் ஆகணும்"

"என்ன, நான் சொன்ன மாதிரியே உங்கப்பா முன்னாடி செம பெர்பார்மன்ஸ் பண்ணிட்ட போலிருக்கு?" என்று போனில் சிரித்தபடியே கேட்டான் அஜய்.

"பின்னே, இப்போ நான் சேர்ந்து வாழறேன்னு சொன்னாலும் எங்கப்பா விடமாட்டார்" என்று சந்தோஷமாக கூறினாள் திவ்யா.

"ஒரு 2 கோடி ஜீவனாம்சமா கேட்கலாமா?" என்று கணேஷிடம் போனில் கேட்டாள் தேவிகா.

"கேளு கேளு, ஏன்னா என் பொண்டாட்டி இப்போ தான் 1 கோடி கேட்டு டைவர்ஸ் நோட்டிஸ் அனுப்பியிருக்கா. நீ 2 கோடி கேட்டாத்தான் நமக்கு லாபம்" என்றான் கணேஷ்.

காட்சி 8:

சென்னையின் பிரபல பார்.

"இந்தா மச்சி, நாம பேசின படி உன் பங்கு 1.5C கார்ல வெச்சிருக்கேன்" என்று சூட்கேஸ் சாவியை கணேஷிடம் நீட்டினான் அஜய்.

"நம்ம அப்பன்காரங்க கிட்டேர்ந்து பணத்தைப் புடுங்கறதுக்கு எவ்ளோ பெரிய டிராமா போட வேண்டியிருக்கு பார்த்தியா? தலையெழுத்து!" என்று தலையில் அடித்துக் கொண்டான் கணேஷ்.

"நாம என்ன ஸ்டார் ப்ளேயரா மச்சி? விளம்பரம், அது இதுன்னு கோடிக்கணக்குல சம்பாதிக்கறதுக்கு? எப்பவோ ஒரு டூர்ல சான்ஸ் கிடைக்குது. லோக்கல் டோர்னமென்ட் ஆடறதுனால கொஞ்சம் காசு வருது. அதையும் இந்த அப்பாக்கள் வாங்கி வெச்சுக்கறாங்க. சொன்ன நம்ப மாட்டே, எங்கப்பன் கிரெடிட் கார்ட் பில்லைக் கூட செக் பண்ணி கணக்குக் கேட்கறாண்டா" என்று குமுறினான் அஜய்.

It is TIME now...

This is to follow up with my preview. In the preview, I confidently expected India to level the series. Well, India was pretty much on course to level the series until 2 days (end of 2^nd day of 2^nd & Final Test) ago. With a day to go in the final test match, NOW, it would be imprudent to expect India level the series. (Again not to forget, Cricket is a glorious game of uncertainty)

Before any introspection, let’s rewind the tape. Teams in alien conditions mostly start on back foot. India’s story wasn’t any different. First Innings of the first test, India allowed New Zealand to run away with big total. Thanks to those drop catches that proved culprit. McCullum, Willimason & Anderson all pounced on the opportunities awarded to them and made India pay with 503. Again, Indian batsmen first outing in New Zeland wasn’t any special, when they were bowled out 300 short of opposition total. Special thanks to Indian batsman for attempting extravagant strokes little too early and causing their own downfall. Good players learn from their mistakes quickly. Indian players learnt too. The catches that went begging in the first innings found safety net in fielder’s hands in the second innings. As a result, India routed New Zealand for 105. Chasing a target excess of 400, Indian batsman spent time at the crease. That resulted in runs on the board. The lower order showed better application this time. Rather be bogged down to the second new ball, the batsmen surprised the opposition with an offensive play. After an enthralling battle, India lost the match by meagre 40 runs. Though the result ended in New Zealand’s favor, India walked into the second test with head high. Importantly, Indian players had come to terms. Even the batsman like Shikar Dhawan who has been found wanting in bouncy pitches had learnt the trade (at a most important juncture of his career and this series). It was truly impossible to believe India to lose the second test before the start of the match.

Much to the expectation, India started the proceedings well in the Second Test. Won the important toss and allowed the opposition in. They then bundled New Zealand inside 200. This was followed by disciplined batting that allowed India to post a total of 438. A total that is good enough to inflict innings defeat. Everything was falling in place when New Zealand was floundering at 92/5 during their effort to wipe the lead. And then, the match changed course. A couple of drop chances, McCullum in the company of Watling (now Neesham) reminding the historic Calcutta test. You read it right. New Zealand are sitting pretty at 578/6 (McCullum 281*, Watling 129, Neeshan 67*) with a 325 lead and a day to play. It would be imprudent to expect India level the series. We will have our answers tomorrow this time. I feel New Zealand win is a more deserving result to this test match.

I don’t want to introspect technical as many know, where India lost track. Dropped Catches, Defensive Captaincy, Flat Deck… (Feel free to fill up the blanks).

For teams to win matches, delivery should come from both Top and Bottom line. During the Tours of England and Australia (2011-2012), it was very evident that the bottom line was more of the issue to the problem. This was reconfirmed when India lost the home series to England (2012). This bottom line issues were addressed over the course of 2 years by selectors and some senior players took the onus on themselves. We witnessed, Dravid, Laxman & Tendulkar retirement. Sehwag, Gambir, Harbhajan, Yuvraj ouster. Bloated Zaheer was shown the exit while a fit Zaheer was welcomed. And then a revamped bottom line (except for few heads) delivered excellent results at home against Australia and West Indies (2013). Again for home series, the management has little work to do as skills of players are sufficient to trump average opposition. But the true test lies only outside Asia. Big question mark hung around the heads of the young Indian team before the Tour of South Africa. To be fair, the players displayed promise despite the result pointed other way at South Africa. The ongoing series against New Zealand (NZ leading 1-0 as of now) is more of an affirmation to the players promise.

For India, the bottom line seems to be solidifying every growing day. I've no doubts about the quality of this young Indian side representing India. The Time has arrived to introspect the Top line. I second Monga's article.

Bottom line: Now that the young Indian side is promising, it is not a bad idea to hand over the responsibility of managing themselves to a young Indian Captain. I would like to start with Pujara for tests. He is the most experienced player (first class) in this format of the game.

Tests begin at Kiwi Land...

Another abroad Test Series for India to begin today. Will India’s performance in the ODI series have any impact in the Test series? Not necessary. And I don’t think so. Definitely the performance of the India’s Test Side at South Africa was stark contrast to the performance of the ODI unit against the same opposition. If recent past is any indicator, we already got our answers.

At the same time, can’t hide the disappointment of India’s abysmal performance in the ODI’s. Suresh Raina and Ishanth Sharma’s ouster from the XI during the course of NZ series was one positive. Not sure, if India has moved on from Raina and Ishanth yet. They better do. Rayudu looked alright in his brief opportunities. He could have made the most out of it with a big fifty. Never mind. Ashwin and Jadeja’s performance with the bat was eye brow rising. Can, India bank on them and play a batsman less? Your guess is as good as mine.The idea of Virat Kohli opening the innings in the 4^th ODI sounded bitter. The lad is well on course to make a name for himself at No.3. Why fiddle with it? Luckily, India put him back to No.3 in the final ODI. From the looks of it, Dhawan’s place is surely hanging. If Dhawan does not have a good outing in the Test Series at NZ, he will be replaced both from Test and ODI squad without a lot of noise.

As much India disappointed, glad to see the ascendancy of Kiwis. I would say Kiwis were kind enough to India by not fielding Corey Anderson in the final two ODI’s. The side is well poised before the World Cup. By all means, they make it to the Semi Finals of the World Cup’s regularly. This time the tournament is to be played at home. So, NZ should make hay while sun shines.

Coming back to the preview of the Test Series, India cannot expect to start as favorites though. But one can expect India to draw the series against Kiwis.

It will be interesting to see what combination India will field for the first test. For starters, Ashwin may have already lost his place to Jadeja. To be precise, he lost his place to Jadeja at Durban. Now that Jadeja had a good outing with the bat in the ODI’s, Ashwin’s wait in the sidelines is likely to extend. Again, it will be exciting to see who will don the 3^rd seamer role? Ishanth Sharma did not have a bad Test Series at all at South Africa (decent series is a better way to put it). It is only logical he should hold on to his place. But the dislike for Ishanth Sharma is growing every day. May be the team management could mull for a change. B Kumar did not do anything commendable in the ODI series to eclipse Ishanth Sharma for the 3^rd seamer slot. So won’t be surprised if one of Ishwar Pandey/Umesh Yadav gets to play as the 3^rd seamer. I’m backing Ishwar Pandey as he brings the height factor of Ishanth Sharma. While, Shami Ahmed is adequate for not considering Umesh Yadav.

India starting XI from my perspective

Dhawan, Vijay, Pujara, Kohli, R Sharma, Rahane, Dhoni, Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, Shami Ahmed, Ishawar Pandey

Bottom line: India should level the series (1-1)

Is time running out???

The recent losses of India in the ODI’s (0-2 to SA, down 0-2 to NZ already) are not going well with the followers. I’m surprised fans are getting impatient sooner compared to the tolerance exhibited when India was clearly on downward spiral for a prolonged duration in the longer format. By no means, I’m backing India’s losses now. At the same time, impatience of fans is understandable. There is not much time left before the World Cup 2015.

Looking at the FTP schedule, India has 3 more ODI’s at NZ, minimum of 4 ODI’s in the Asia Cup at Bangladesh, 5 ODI’s at England, probably 5 more ODI’s at Australia too. Roughly 20 ODI’s before the World Cup of which only 13 ODI’s (played at NZ, England, Australia) can be termed meaningful preparation. Dhoni made it very clear that he is going to lead India in the 2015 World Cup.

The questions that hamper are…

Is his army good to defend the title?

If not, who are the weak links?

Can these weak links get better with tutoring time?

If not, do we have enough time to bring new players and groom them?

Let the introspection begin…

There are definitely some questionable places in the side. So, let’s start with the OUTS.

Raina

If a player like Dhawan needs more time to settle in the side, it is understandable. But not Raina!!! Raina has been with the Indian side for little more than 5 years, played about 200 ODIs, played every condition, played every opponent, played almost in every possible slot, but still his batting is found wanting. Except being an outstanding fielder and a utility bowler, there is not too much in favor of Raina. I think by end of this NZ series (if he does not come up with stupendous + consistent performance with the bat from here), he will be shown the door. It is not only my personal opinion; the public noise is also getting louder on Raina’s ouster. Yuvi is a better alternative than Raina. I pretty much know Yuvi is never out of the equation. I’m just trying to compare apples to apples. If we start looking for Raina like players, may be Sehwag is handy. Sehwag can be useful bowler, better bat than Raina and of course an awful fielder. However, India does not need the Sehwag with the current attitude. Raina will/should be out.

Ishant Sharma

He is losing his pace, failing to discomfort batsman (leave alone picking wickets) and getting clobbered. It is only a matter of time before Aaron/Yadav or someone else seals his spot. Ishanth will be out.

May be In - May be Out

Ashwin

Ashwin has about 75 ODI’s under his belt and he has been a regular feature since the World Cup 2011. I’m not sure if Ashwin has it in him to be in the ODI side as a lead spinner. Definitely his performances in the recent ODI’s (abroad) have been very ordinary. Break thru’s does not seem to be coming. His batting style does not have the wherewithal to produce low order cameos. At the same time, India does not have too many choices for the role of lead off spinner. Either India should go back to Harbhajan or introduce Parvez Rasool sooner than later. From the context of running short out of time, luck may favor Ashwin’s persistence. But I think, Rasool should be ventured in the Asia cup and persisted in England Series to evaluate between Ashwin and Rasool for the World Cup 2015. So, Ashwin May be In, May be Out.

Shikar Dhawan

I know Test performances are not a metric to evaluate a player in ODI format. Dhawan was definitely found wanting in the Test Series at South Africa. And the shadow of failure in the South Africa Test series seems to be rubbing him in the ODI’s at NZ too. Again these are very early years in his career and it is only fair he gets a decent run. In the current political cloud, the odds of Dhawan featuring in the World Cup 2015 appears bright than Gambir. However, I’m personally not convinced with both of them. Pujara could be a better alternate compared to Dhawan or Gambir in alien condition. He has the appetite to bat long and possibly can be a better partner to suit the stroke players like Kohli, Yuvi and Dhoni to follow. Even a youth like Unmukt Chand is not a bad idea, especially after following the rise of De Kock. Shikar Dhawan, May be out.

Rohit Sharma

He is another player consistently annoying public for failing to live up to reputation. The latest joke running rounds, Pappu can’t bat sala!!! No doubt he is a talent and scoring double century is no joke by any means. It is very obvious Dhoni want him to replace Sehwag. And, Sharma has all the ingredients to replace Sehwag. However, talent is different, performance is different. Since his partner Shikar Dhawan is also not doing any great, Rohit Sharma is likely to get an extended run up. In all probability, he will feature in the World Cup and these 20 odd ODI’s will be considered as a tutoring time. Even though public sentiment is largely against Rohit Sharma, he May be In.

B Kumar

Swing is King. It is interesting to see how he performs in NZ and England. Except P Kumar and Zaheer Khan, there are not many in the circuit to challenge him. B Kumar May be In, May be Out.

In’s

R Jadeja

Sirji has proved with his bowling as why he should be in a line up. However the all-round tag associated with him is the only concern. As an all-rounder he should be out. But, the public has started seeing him as a bowler these days. Sirji, is in.

Rahane

Rahane, finally break into the XI. He looked good in the second ODI against NZ until he got out. The reminder of the ODI’s before the World Cup will be the nurturing time. Rahane, In.

Needs

Going into the World Cup, India need a fast bowling all-rounder. There are not many choices in store except Irfan Pathan and Roger Binny. Unfortunately Irfan Pathan is caught up in the tussle of becoming an all-rounder Vs bowler. If Irfan Pathan wants to play as a bowler, the odds of him making the cut in the side is very limited. Again, we are yet to see Binny. I just wish one of them become that all-rounder India badly needs for this World Cup campaign. And for that to happen, the least one of them should make a head start. We should see more of Binny from here. It is important Binny turn into that Robin Singh.

Options

With Raina & Ishanth clearly marked out, Ashwin & Dhawan classified as May be outs, what are the options for replacements?

Both openers (Sharma (may be in), Dhawan (may be out)) barely making an impact, there is a good chance we should see a new face. My personal bet would be Pujara, but it is not a bad idea to venture a youth like Unmukt Chand. I’m not sure if India has time to try both Pujara and Chand in the space of 1 year. Odds are good Chand should start fresh post World Cup. So, Pujara is likely to don the role of opener soon.

Also it is not a bad idea to venture somebody like Sanju Samson or Vijay Zol in the mix for the World Cup for a middle order slot. Again for that India should start playing Rayudu before eliminating him from the equation. And for that to happen, fall of Raina is imminent.

I feel Aaron, Yadav, Pandey (one of the fast bowlers) is surely making the cut ahead of Ishant Sharma.

We should see few changes coming soon.
