Although there are only a handful of sounds, the lightsaber FX is really cool and ups the value of the app overall. I would love to see more sounds added and apparently the developers are already working on more fun sounds to provide even more value to this application. Gaga Duck – Silly, Duck-Diving Reverse Jumper Game

Gaga Duck is an iPhone game that features 2 types of games wrapped into one: a Reverse Jumper and a Shooter game where your Duck and his robot friend (Yamu) work together to clean out the garbage-ridden pond throughout the 3 challenging game modes. It is about time a developer turned the traditional Jumper game upside down, where the player has to go down farther and farther — opposite of the norm. Not sure if it’s me or this game, but I found Gaga Duck to be a good challenge, and it takes some time to get use to going down and not up — just saying.

Your duck (Gaga) and Yamu (who eats garbage) dive way down as far as possible using bubbles to push off of, diving deeper and farther down into the pond. To keep things interesting, there are several different kinds of bubbles, some good ones that will shoot you faster and farther, and some not so good, like the one touch bubbles that disappear after you push off of them. You use the iPhone’s accelerometer to guide your duck deeper while trying to navigate the bubbles in order to keep going because once you miss a bubble you will float back up to the top of the pond. There are also some obstacles in the form of crabs, fish, and snakes that will also end your game, but not to worry because you have a fierce-shooting duck bill that can take out any enemy — just tap, aim, and tap on the enemy at hand. The other diving game mode is called Challenge and totally lives up to its name. In this game, Yamu creates air bubbles from the garbage that Gaga gathers, but no air bubbles exist until you get the garbage, which means while you travel downward you not only have to push off the bubbles correctly, but you have to continue to create air bubbles through garbage collection making it a little trickier.

The final game mode is an arcade-style Shooter where you shoot all incoming bubbles as well as enemies. If you loose your 10 hearts or let an enemy past you, your game is over. Gaga Duck is a whimsically-fun, creative casual iPhone game, but don’t let that fool you because there is a significant difficulty factor in all game modes — good luck on the Challenge mode, you will need it. Highway Rider – Crotch Rocket Insanity!

Highway Rider is an insane high-speed motorcycle game that rewards you for your fearless close calls (with speeding vehicles) on the highway, and charges you money A’la a “hospital bill” for all the broken bones that your are sure to earn along the way. Good motorcycle iPhone and iPad games can be hard to come by in the iTunes App Store, except for Lane Splitter, a fun arcade game similar to this — yet subtly different. Highway Rider takes a more realistic approach by giving you a 1 point or 1 close call for each moving vehicle you speed close enough to — and to achieve this you have to get pretty close.

The object in Single Play mode is to see how many close calls you can get before crashing, which seems easy but there is always a catch; isn’t there? Well, there is in this game. Each time you pass a car in Single Play mode your speed increases 5 to 10 mph, which at first does not seem like much. However, as you continue to successfully blaze by vehicles, you’ll find those vehicles are coming at you at an intense speed. At this point, it is best to let your reflexes take over because if you think too hard, you will find yourself splattered all over the back of a semi-truck or guardrail. Crashing will eventually happen to you, and when it does all your injuries are racked up like a long receipt you get when checking out at the grocery store, with a total bill and a cut scene to the hospital before you can play again. I would love to see a feature or the ability to tap past this and get racing again sooner, because it seems like minutes before you can get back to the game and try to beat your last best Close Call score.

The only other real criticism that I have is the lack of better effects when the rider crashes. The ragdoll effect is cool, as well as the blood pool, but I want to see body parts and a more realistic destruction of the body with levels of death or near death results. A real plus to this current FREE game is the Multi-Player game mode where you can race live against another person through Apple Game Center, the first person to 50 close calls wins — first to crash — loses. There is also some minor customization you can change for the rider and bike color. Overall, I’d say that this FREE, high-speed game is an easy download for any gamer. Hands On Equations 2 is an easy-to-use algebra app that picks up where the first version, Hands On Equations, left off and expands on the same great hands-on learning method, which includes video instruction, examples, exercises for each lesson, and 1 overall review lesson. Math has never been one of my strong subjects, but the “Hands On Equations” method presents algebra in a tangible, common sense approach that just clicked for me.

I guess it’s because the method requires you to interact with each problem, literally in a “hands-on way.” The method includes using a balance, pawns (blue and white), and number die (0 to 10) to solve equations. This Education app is actually based on a physical offline math tool that over 1 million kids have been using to conquer their algebra fear, and is the second of the two, picking up where the first iPad app left off (starting with lesson 8). While the first app introduced 6 lessons and a review lesson using only a blue pawn (along with the balance and number blocks), this app increases in difficulty and introduces a white (star) pawn. By using this math method, young kids 8 and up (to even high school students) are benefiting from learning in an easy-to-understand way and are conquering their fear of algebra at the same time.

During my testing for the video app demo, I found that I was able to jump into several lessons by only watching the video in the beginning and then working on the problems within the lesson. I was able to complete most of what I attempted, and if I had problems I would use the help button inside the lesson equations to re-watch the video for better understanding. However, I did realize something very critical from jumping around from lesson-to-lesson, and that was that you must follow the lessons in chronological order because each lesson builds upon your base of knowledge from previous lessons — which become increasingly more difficult as you go along. During all lesson problems, you will find the opportunity to check your answer once you have solved for X or star, or both. The user interface is extremely self-explanatory while being very basic. Hands On Equations 2 worked so well for me that we have downloaded this on our kids’ iPad to help them increase their maths skills before heading off to college. Hands-On Equations, Level 2 App

This app is intended for students (age eight and up) who have completed the Level 1 Hands-On Equations app or who have completed Level 1 in the classroom.

In Level 1, the student has learned how to solve equations such as 4x + 3 = 3x + 9 and 2(2x + 1)= x + 14 using a blue pawn, whose name is x, and red numbered cubes.

In Level 2, the student will learn how to solve equations involving a white pawn. The white pawn is an unknown like the blue pawn. The name given to the white pawn is “star.”

Dr. Borenson invented a new mathematical symbol for the white pawn, namely an x with a crossbar through it. We cannot display this symbol in this text description of the app and so will simply use the name of the white pawn, “star,” in the equations.

A video introduction is provided for each lesson. (See the sample YouTube video at http://youtu.be/VFYQ47EAqZw.) Each video introduction is followed by two examples and ten exercises. It is essential for the student to view the lesson video prior to attempting the examples and exercises for that lesson.

Level 1 consisted of six instructional lessons and a 7th lesson, a review lesson. Level 2 begins with Lesson 8.

In Lesson 8 the student uses the same legal moves learned in Level 1 to solve equations
involving the white pawn. An example from this lesson is 5star – 2star = star + 8.

In Lesson 9 the student learns that if the blue pawn and the white pawn appear together, then they are opposites of each other; and the pair has a zero value. The student learns to evaluate expressions. For example, if star = 3, what is the value of star + 2x + 2star + 7?

(Level 2 does not assume the student has any prior experience with negative numbers.)

In Lesson 10 the student solves simple equations containing both x’s and stars on one side of the setup. Once the value for x is found, star also is known because it is x’s opposite. An example from this lesson is 4x + star + 1 = 2x + 5.

In Lessons 11 and 12 the student is introduced to examples having x’s and stars on different sides of the setup. The student learns two new legal moves for solving these problems. An example from these lesson is 2x = star + 4.

In Lesson 13 the student is given more involved equations. An example from this lesson is x + 12 = 2star + 6.

In Lesson 14 the student learns a strategy for subtracting an entity not already on the balance scale and thus can solve equations such as 2x – star = 12.

In Lesson 15 the student learns to recognize equations containing (-x) as another name for star and thus can solve equations such as 3x – (-x) + 4 = 2(-x) + 10.

Lesson 16 is a review lesson.

This app is limited to Level 2 of Hands-On Equations, consisting of eight lessons and a review lesson. We assume that a student attempting this Level 2 app will have studied Hands-On Equations Level 1 in the classroom or will have completed the Level 1 app.

Like the physical Hands-On Equations program, the linear equations presented in the app involve whole-number coefficients and whole-number answers.
