The Puppet Show, the new artistic project by the photographers Winkler+Noah exhibited 5th to 10th May in Milan.

30 portraits of children from two to eight years old, taken very naturally and transformed into dolls by a subtle play of retouching.
The photo-symbol of the show, has already received two of the most important awards on the international photographic scene:
American Photography of New York and publication in the volume “200 Best Photographers Worldwide” by Luerzers Archive.

An exhibit which becomes a starting point for reflection, sociological research and introspection,
to better understand ourselves and the world around us. And to understand that the best present we can give
to children is to let them be children.

Design Event is pleased to be bringing Adrian Shaughnessy, the self taught graphic designer and author of How To Be A Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul, back to Newcastle after his sold out talk last June for an ‘in conversation with’ evening with Michael C. Place of Build on 25th March at 6pm. They will be discussing Michael’s background, his career, how he founded graphic design studio Build, and talking about the studios output of work.

Michael is no stranger to Newcastle after learning his trade at Newcastle College. He went on to work at The Designers Republic in Sheffield for several years, before founding Build in 2001. Build has since forged an international reputation as a forward-thinking studio, with an exceptional eye for detail and a unique sense of style, and is well-known for its passion for print, type and the craft of design. The studio produces a wide range of graphic work from illustration, brand identity, design and layout as well as art direction for print, websites and animation.

Build has shown its works in several exhibitions in the UK and abroad, most recently producing exclusive print artworks for display within The North Face stores in Japan.

Michael features in the 2007 film ‘Helvetica- A Documentary Film’, has spoken at numerous conferences worldwide, and has twice been a judge at the prestigious D&AD global awards. Clients include Getty Images, Nike, Design Museum London, D&AD, Sony Computer Entertainment and Faber&Faber publishing, amongst a host of smaller independents.

Exhibition in Gallery XIV based in Boston, July 4 to Octobre 4, 2008.

A Politic showcases politically inspired artwork from 40 premiere US artists representing 16 states from across the country. The diverse subject matter in this juried exhibition conjures up themes relating to the economy, war, notions of liberty, the environment, media ethics, capitalism, terrorism and other topical issues, presented in a myriad of masterful art making traditions.

“Ron English is a pop pervert and prankster impresario, tweaking any nose that wanders within his grasp. His images are fun house mirror reflections of our increasingly bizarre popular culture, complete with weirdo lighting and acts of perplexing oddity. Due to their improbably bright palettes, Ron’s paintings almost give off their own light source. One wonders if radioactive isotopes might be employed to achieve this effect (Plutonium Yellow seems to be a favorite), as no other artist around seems to be able to “outshine” his work in quite the same way.”

English has also long used his work to comment upon American contemporary culture and its more egregious excesses and hypocrisies, all while delighting his audiences with his raucous, playful imagery. Most recently, Ron and his work appeared in the recent film Supersize Me, a film that skewers the fast food industry. -beinart.org

The works by Ron English, a prolific and contemporary art icon, can be seen worldwide – from museum and gallery walls to impromptu installations in the most unlikely of places." Gallery XIV

Exhibitions, photography about japanese culture, Paris.

Japan, the Ambiguous, and Myself, is the current exhibition of the Lacen Galerie in Paris.

The exhibition draws its title from a collection of texts by Japanese author Kenzaburo
Oe.
Oe addressed the extremely difficult task for Japan of reconstructing itself on its cultural
and historical roots while Western influence was more and more deeply felt.
This group show presents this ambiguity through photographs and one video, inter-
weaving the perspectives of a Western man and a Japanese woman on a country that
has undergone a radical transformation over the past several years. Whether in the
rigorist framework of David Balhuizen’s refined, earth-toned photographs or in the
more “pop” flourishes of Miki Nitadori’s autobiographical video, these perspectives
exude a palpable malaise: what is left of a people once they have abandoned their
culture?

Far from the typical images of a high-tech or, on the other hand, bucolic Japan, David
Balhuizen’s photographs exacerbate the loss of an identifying trait. Color collapses the
space between isolated individuals in anonymous universes.

Exhibition of Jan Farbe in the Museum "Le Louvre", Paris.

Jan Fabre is a contemporary belgian artist. He studied at the « Academy of Arts of Anvers » and then began to write plays. At the beginning of the 70’s he presents provocating actions and private « performances ». He is also a plastician and designs « mise-en-scene ».

The most important Jan Fabre’s piece of work is the covering of the ceiling of the hall of mirrors of the Brussel’s royal palace. The queen Paola had createed an artistic comity who had to integrate the belgian contemporary art in the royal palace which was built in the 19th century. Jan Fabre made a totally amazing work. He recovered the ceiling with 1,4 billion scarab’s carapaces. It reflects the light by giving different changing tons from green to blue. The confrontation of lightennings and mirrors gives a brilliant effect. Through this creation we can see that contemporary art and tradition can complete themselves.

The new exhibition of Jan Fabre in the « Musée du Louvre » called “The Angel of Metamorphosis” is in the same spirit. He invits us to rediscover the work of Jan van Eyck, Jérôme Bosch, Quentin Metsys, Rembrandt or Rubens. He tries to connect his universe with the themes related to the pieces of work like the death, the money, the madness… The exposition gathers about thirty pieces of work : sketches, sculptures, installations, videos and films. Some pieces are really perplexing and confusing. One of them spreads over about 30 meters. There are an among of graves on the flour. On these graves are engraved insect’s names and dates of well-known artists. On the center is laid an enormous red worm in rubber with the head of Jan Fabre. The red worm breathes and says understanding things. The result is totally perplexing and made me ill at ease.

The Gastrotypographicalassemblage was conceived by Lou Dorfsman, the legendary art director. The wall was created for the CBS cafeteria, where is was displayed for a number of years. During the 1980's the wall was unceremoniously removed, and since that time, it has been in storage, safe but slowly deteriorating. The Center for Design Study, an Atlanta-based not-for-profit, is raising money to restore the wall, so it can be exhibited.

The Center for Design Study believes that we are obliged to preserve important works of design, ensure that they are available for generations to come and to make them accessible to future generations.

We must save this piece of design history.
