iJumpman [iPhone, Games]

iJumpman is a retro-futuristic platformer by Andrew McClure. What begins as an imitation of 8bit retro platformer with game mechanics reminiscent of Joust quickly turns in one of the most engaging retro inspired games on the iPhone. Use tilt or onscreen controls to move across the level, effect gravity and objects in the world (physics), invisible walls, bombs, awesome soundtrack and effects and so much more with the task to survive to the exit. Although some levels may need balancing as you may find yourself at times quickly passing through the levels and other having to die about 20 times at least on others, the game is nevertheless so much fun it’s hard to describe. The 3D space showing next levels just adds to the desire to pass the current and move onto the next. In addition to all of this, a full level editor is including together with ability to upload and download additional levels. Controls vary from tilt control what we have found in Ronaldo where you rotate the world around you, also achievable via “finger twist” to on screen control buttons which for some levels especially those requiring you to continuously rotate the world. Regardless of how much you are against of games with on screen controls, here they are really useful at times and done in such a way not to be too obtrusive and very much in touch graphically with the environment.

This is easily the best $2.99 I have spent on a retro classic inspired game for the iPhone. A simple must if you a fan of 8bit gaming and if you are not and enjoy the likings of Ronaldo, iJumpman is a great example of retro adaptation for the iPhone platform. I could not recommend it more..

As you point the camera at the enviroment around you, you will see real time camera feed of kaleidoscopic images. Tap the screen to freeze the image. LastHistory [Mac]

LastHistory allows you to analyze music listening histories from Last.fm through an interactive visualization and to explore your own past by combining the music you listened to with your own photos and calendar entries. It is available as a desktop application for Mac OS X v10.5 or higher.

Included are two modes, optimized for a different use case. Analysis Mode can be used for interactively analyzing an arbitrary listening history (not necessarily your own) in three basic dimensions: time, tracks and genre. Integrated tools like searching, playlist highlighting, mouse-over information, and zooming allow to generate insight for the visualized music listening history in each of those dimensions. Personal Mode adapts the visualization shown in Analysis mode for exploring your own past: by adding photos from your iPhoto library and calendar entries from iCal to the visualization, you can reminisce about your past by listening to the top tracks from your last vacation while watching a slide show of the corresponding photos.

Sampletoy [iPhone, Sound]

From the author of Thump comes his latest app Sampletoy. As it’s name would imply, Sampletoy is about having fun with sound. At it’s core, Sampletoy is a simple sampler. It lets you record audio using the iPhone microphone and play it back at different pitches. You can set the loop points for the recording and play multiple copies of it at the same time using the multitouch note area. You have control over the pitch range, filter and delay effects and looping parameters. The interface is easy to use and the important parameters are up front at your fingertips. Settings can be saved and you can email yourself recordings of your ‘performances’.

Sampletoy was created using OpenFrameworks, which is a simple C++ Framework for doing low-level graphics and sound on a variety of platforms. OpenFrameworks is emerging as a viable alternative to ObjectiveC for iPhone development. It’s well suited to games, music apps and anything else that requires high performance and doesn’t require the standard UIKit components.

Overall, Sampletoy it is a nice little instrument with a lot of potential creative uses. Check it out.

SILICA-ESC is a generative movie that portrays possible computing platform for the future. The story takes place in Singapore, where the decision about massive production of the new computing platform – SILICA-ESC is about to be made. The protagonists challenge the emerging supercomputer with issues like: class segregation, rules of art making, and spirituality. These questions seem like they are very important for the future developments of the global IT sector. Also, they are considered to be the most difficult ones and challenging for the super computer. But, SILICA-ESC responds with ease. By emitting audio, visual and scent impulses, she mesmerizes her first public users.

Buttons [Processing, Objects]

Buttons in a project by Sascha Pohflepp playing on the notion of the camera as a networked object. Unlike a conventional analog or digital camera, this one doesn’t have any optical parts. It is a camera that will only capture a moment at the press of a button by recording only the time it was pressed. Quickly after it begins to continuously search on the net for other photos that have been taken in the very same moment and displays on the screen. Essentially, it is a camera that – using a SonyEricsson K750i hidden behind the boxing – takes other’sphotos. Photos that were created by someone who pressed a button somewhere at the same time as its own button was pressed.

Taking a photo means making a memory. Choosing a moment in time and framing a situation. Archiving it or making it public. Either way, we create a visual item that we have an emotional attachment to through our memory. Photos help us to remember moments in our past. Often they even become a memory in their own right. For many, making their moments public through services like Flickr is already part the process of photography itself, creating archives which contain a vast collection of visual fragments of individual lives.

This project was conceived by Sascha Pohflepp as a diploma thesis in Visual Communication at the Berlin University of the Arts (UDK). It was supervised by prof. Joachim Sauter and Jussi Ängeslevä.

Babel Tower [iPhone]

Created by Ariel Malka, Chronotext is a growing collection of software experiments exploring the relation between text, space and time. One of these is the new iPhone application called Babel Tower. The app lets you visualize, in 3D, the Biblical passage mentioning the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9), wrapped around a helicoidal path, allowing you to read the text by rotating it indefinitely. The app also includes images of previous projects in the chronotext archive all wrapped up in a wonderful interface.

Note: if you shake the device, the tower will collapse together with the text!

Ariel Malka is a designer and programmer based in Tel-Aviv. Since 2003, he stands behind chronotext as “a playground to explore new ways to read and write, a constantly evolving software toolkit”.

SUPERBROTHERS have just posted exciting new information about their upcoming iPhone game called Sword and Sworcery. While the full details are still not available, from the videos below and descriptions (the GDC 2010 build), we get a taste of the “a brave experiment in i/o cinema for apple’s touchtronic machinery“.

When Apple’s touchtronic machine is held horizontally, The Sword is sheathed & it is possible to explore & observe by tapping, dragging & pinching the multi-touch display, a style of play referred to internally as “sworcery”. In S:S&S EP there is always a clear path to follow although this path will vary depending upon the phase of the moon. Unlike comparable videogames, in S:S&S EP there are rarely if ever hard barriers to halt a player’s progress and it is possible to reach an endpoint in a single sitting, however the real S:S&S EP experience unfolds on repeated playthroughs when the player ventures off the beaten track to discover shortcuts, secrets and odd twisting paths that lead to some surprising situations. Occasionally obstacles & dangers will threaten & in order to overcome them it will become necessary to tilt Apple’s touchtronic machine vertically, unsheathe The Sword.
