Created by Ole Kristensen, Work in Progress installation includes an old roland plotter programmed to doodle in Processing. With a personality of it’s own, created to replicate, in it’s own way, the doodles we do during phone conversations (Ole).

Ole describes the process:
Before starting up a doodle, the plotter has to be loaded with paper, and the button pressed. the plotter will describe itself, at plot a start price. It doodles until stopped, occasionally raising the price at a rate of 12 € an hour. When stopped, it signs and numbers the drawing. The resulting sheet is sold as a unique pen drawing.

The plotter has been doodling for some time now and has been exhibited at the alt_cph opening, curated by Stine Hebert and mikrogalleriet and now in a revised edition for the Brunhofer Galerie in Linz as a sideshow to the Ars Electronica Festival 2010.

EyeWriter needs your Help! [News]

EyeWriter needs your help!

One year ago, graffiti artist Tony Quan (aka TEMPT1) teamed up with a group of artists from the Graffiti Research Lab, OpenFrameworks and Free Art and Technology communities to develop free and open source eye tracking and drawing software that has helped him make art again for the first time since being hospitalized. In 2003, TEMPT1 was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease), a degenerative neuromuscular disorder that causes paralysis and ultimately death. Over the course of 5 years, he lost the ability to move his arms and legs, speak, eat and even breathe without life-support systems. Not only is he drawing again, but he’s creating new and complex letter forms, designing font libraries and evolving a brand new style using new and old technology in ways no one could have imagined. After seven years of paralysis, Tony has again become a pioneer in a new community of creative individuals who refuse to let neuromuscular diseases stop them from expressing themselves through art.

The team has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the money Tony needs to create a new collection of original TEMPT1 artwork and merchandise using the EyeWriter 2.0 software, robotic technology, traditional print-making techniques, as well as his community of friends, fans and peers.

Supporting this campaign will not only allow TEMPT1 to continue to make art and express his ideas, but it will give him a chance to again become a professional artist, independently support himself and his family, pay for his medical bills, and make a contribution to the contemporary art world.

rheo: 5 horizons [MaxMSP, Sound]

Described as “one of the best audiovisual installations and a personal favourite of the prix ars electronica 2010” by Jonas Heuer, the rheo: 5 horizons is work by Ryoichi Kurokawa. The audio/visual piece has just won Golden Nicas prize in the Digital Musics & Sound Art category. First created back in 2009 utilising 3 screens in the form of Audiovisual concert (see images below), the new installation is a five screen extravaganza and a must see if you’re making your way to the prix.

Ryoichi Kurokawa’s new work ‘Rheo’ is a new form of audiovisual expression inspired by the constant flux of landscapes. Kurokawa tends to eliminate the boundaries of our physical perception. A minimal, yet chaotic conflux of visual and auditory perception merges into an experience of memory and ambiguity, where virtual and actual images are no longer distinguishable. Unidades [iPhone, iPad, Processing]

First created as an interactive installation made in Processing ‘Organized Complexity’ , Unidades by Luis Carli is currently making it’s way to the AppStore.

Interact with hundreds of units that change their color depending on the behavior of the particles close to them. Interfere and watch them reorganize, forming new and unexpected graphic patterns, which are an indirect consequence of the manipulation of the system.

About ‘Organized Complexity’:
In this project I sought to generate images that were not the direct result from the intentions of an author, from the determinations imposed by a subject, result of applying formulas that are a simplified way to understand our phenomenal world. Simplified as they are developed upon assumptions no longer criticized, which unfold logically from models that are too abstract…read more..

Flash on the Beach [Events]

FOTB is approaching fast, more precisely in 3 weeks from today. For those that might be unaware of FOTB already, it is an annual conference in Brighton, UK bringing together some of the biggest names in Flash and digital media on the whole. This is FOTB’s fifth year! If you are a designer, developer, coder, student, manager, game developer, artist, animator or a newbie, then this conference will be for you. Don’t think that Flash on the Beach is only about Flash. Sure appearing at FOTB in the past the team has had the usual suspects – Flash, Flex, AIR, and then some; Open Frameworks, Processing, AJAX, Photoshop, After Effects, Art, Design, Illustration, Animation, Sound and many more.

Below we’ve included two talks from last year including one by mario KLINGEMANN and andre MICHELLE (more here). I met both Mario and Andre during Flashbelt back in June and they are two of many talkers at FOTB you don’t want to miss. We Sliders [iPhone]

Created by We Choose Fun, We Sliders is a simple puzzle game where the task is to arrange sliders into a vertical line. The game starts with only few rows and as you progress the number of rows increases. Each row is connected to a different row, ie dragging one to the left with make other move right. This does not work vice versa, meaning that sliders are not inter-connected. Your task is to find the perfect combination resulting in a continuos vertical alignment. This is all made extra wonderful by the colour of the sliders and the background which changes as you move the sliders. Absolutely lovely.

This is an unconventional game with an unconventional interface.
Learning how to use it is part of the game, that’s what you need to know.

Processing.org Exhibition now curated by FV [News]

From September 2010, myself with CreativeApplications.Net will be the curator of the online exhibition of projects on Processing.org. It’s a great privilege and pleasure to contribute to the almost 10 year old open source project initiated by Ben Fry and Casey Reas. Processing has won hearts and minds of many artists, researchers, designers and architects over the years and still remains one of the most used creative code programming environments. Students at hundreds of schools around the world use Processing for classes ranging from middle school math education to undergraduate programming courses to graduate fine arts studios. Tens of thousands of companies, artists, designers, architects, and researchers use Processing to create an incredibly diverse range of projects. CAN has posted some of these but processing.org/exhibition/ still remains an archive of some of the most amazing Processing projects out there. It’s also easy to get the quick sense of how Processing has changed over the years by looking at the exhibition, from Applets to large installations. The original idea was simple; to show what Processing can do. A priority in recent years has been to show the range of what is possible (fabrication, installation, rendered video) in addition to realtime graphics – Casey writes. From this month very few carefully selected projects shown on CAN will make their way to the exhibition.

We kick things off with the wonderful Understanding Shakespeare by Stephan Thiel. In case you missed it, see this post on CAN.
Understanding Shakespeare is an attempt to create a new visual understanding of the work by analysing most frequently used words for each character. Using Processing, a scene is represented by a block of text and scaled relatively according to its number of words. Characters are ordered by appearance from left to right throughout the play. The major character’s speeches are highlighted to illustrate their amounts of spoken words as compared to the rest of the play…more

Additionally to the above, Stephan and two fellow designers are trying to give something back to the Processing community. They are providing teaching materials available at www.creativecoding.org which they use at various german universities. So far, these have developed into a well known resource among german designers and media artists and the team hopes to translate them to english soon.

We are the World – Not in Death [Scripts]

Daniel Franke and Andreas Fischer recently finished the post & effects on a video for the band “We are the world” from LA. Using custom scripts for After Effects which generate a mapping of the fft-analysis of the audio data of the song, the distortion of the dancer were controlled using the slitscan technique. The higher the audio values are, the greater is the range of frames sampled for one image. See video below.

Daniel and Andreas are part of the We Are Chopchop collective, a small community of designers, video- and media artists working and exploring in the field of visual culture production.

Graffiti Analysis v.3.0 [Mac, openFrameworks]

The fantastic Graffiti Analysis 3.0 application by Evan Roth and Chris Sugrue is now available for download! For those unfamiliar with the project, GA is an extensive ongoing study in the motion of graffiti. Custom software designed for graffiti writers creates visualizations of the often unseen gestures involved in the creation of a tag. Motion data is recorded, analyzed and archived as Graffiti Markup Language (.gml) files, a specifically formatted XML file designed to be a common open structure for archiving gestural graffiti motion data. GML files are saved in an open online database, 000000book.com, where writers can share analytical representations of their hand styles.

The 3.0 app includes the following new features:
- Input from iPhone + anything you can strap the light onto.
- Audio input which affects particles generated from the tag – perfect for live events
- Keyword based RSS .gml player / search for a keyword and let the app play all the tags
- 3D Printing Integration – Print your tags!!
- ”Interactive Architecture” – allows interaction of projected graffiti with objects that receive the projection (buildings)..
- Laser Input – tag buildings from long distances.. (need big a** monster projector)
- Stereography..
