International Stone Collections craft a massive stone bar made of Victoria White, a rare import from Sierra Leone. A free flowing chain pattern comprised of Nero Marquina and Bardiglio stones designed by Nicole Fuller Interiors and cut by Creative Edge is intricately inlayed within the stone. The fixture sits atop an up-cycled wood base, reclaimed from a water tower in Brooklyn by Manhattan Forest Products.

This  luxury home project is a good example of how our designs can enhance the definition of large spaces and connect  to smaller spaces to lend a feeling of character and intimacy.

Working closely with Creative Edge Master Shop, the manufactuer, Harri Aalto, Chief designer for Aalto Designs, the sister company to Creative Edge, designed elegant flooring to successfully fulfill the showroom, interior designer and client’s vision.

We were all very pleased with the final product .

As an added benefit, we custom cut the field stone to perfect the fitting of our floor accent designs, which included borders, medallion and accent embellishments. This service is complimentary with most of our projects.

On any project we are  happy to provide the field stone or custom waterjet cut the owners field stone depending on the customers preference.

Designers are the ones having the most fun with Terrazzo. It’s not just the bright colors which stimulates their creativity. The dreaded grid pattern which is ubiquitous with tile, will not be an issue with hindering their unique design.  The biggest challenge remains not creating a design that is going to be EXTREMELY time consuming and not to mention sky-high priced.

Owners are starting to love it, too. Easy maintenance and incredibly durability are just a few of its attributes, however, they won’t  pay an arm and a leg at the whim of some designer.

“So what does all of this have to do with waterjet”?

Excellent question. And an even more excellent answer……..still to come.

In the early 1990′s, when most architects and interior designers had never even heard of this process, we were producing designs such as this Mount Rushmore hotel entry, and extremely detailed designs for ultimate luxury suites in Las Vegas, shown below. We were the first to do detailed designs in resilient flooring and, the list goes on.

In 2011, we are in the beginning of a new, revolutionary waterjet process that involves of all things……..terrazzo.

“Terrazzo”? You might be thinking. “How does a poured-in-place product get waterjet cut”?

I have plenty of surprises ahead.

Every so often a project comes along that is just so epic that we can’t help ourselves from feeling some pride.  This palatial home in New Jersey is one of those projects.  Every corner of this amazing home oozes luxury.  We had the great pleasure of working with the developer, Kevo Homes, to put our classic touch on the floors in many of the rooms.  With a combination of custom marble medallions, borders, and floor accents, every inch of the floor mirrors the quality and fine detail found throughout the rest of the home.

Traveling at twice the speed of sound, waterjet cutting is actually a precise process of erosion.

Glass and acrylic have always been very difficult to incorporate with other materials.  Cutting glass by hand has many limitations and cutting acrylic into shapes can be both messy and time-consuming.   Waterjet cuts acrylic and glass in many ways not otherwise possible and allow it to be integrated with stone, metal, ceramic and more.

The durability of stainless steel that makes it a wonderful material to use also makes it very difficult to work with in fabrication.  Waterjet cutting gives designers options previously thought impossible.

In addition to inlaying of materials, there is also overlaying.  Stacking two metals on top of one another gives the look of a cast product.   In the picture below, stainless steel is textured, waterjet cut and overlaid to give a stunning effect.

As technology has a changed since the floor was first installed in 1972, this wasn’t a matter of recutting old patterns.  With the drawing from the original artist, Nancy Day, our skilled programmer, Kevin Thornburg, redrew all of the cut lines to recreate the legacy floor.

Another element adding complexity and interest to this piece is the combination of precast and poured terrazzo.  Some parts were made using Creative Edge’s waterjet-cut precast terrazzo, and other areas used traditional pour-in terrazzo using our waterjet divider forms and templating systems.  Click on the pictures below to see a larger image and a description.  Contact info for Missouri Terrazzo is below the gallery.
