In 1988 a huge UFO stopped over the house of Ludovico Granchi, who lived in Rio de Janeiro. He said as he looked up at it, a brightly lit panel resembling a holographic projection was made visible to him. It had black symbols on it and he felt he was supposed to copy these down. He ran inside and got paper and pen, and did so, as accurately as he could. It took him about 10 minutes. He said he was "in a panic" not only because the was this huge UFO over his head, but because he felt what he was writing down, and his accuracy, was of dire importance. When he was finished, the panel faded into the body of the UFO, which then moved away to a 'safe distance', then flew off so fast that it was gone in a second. He was left with no sense as to what he copied or why he was chosen to , but here it is.

UFO OVER ALTOONA, PA JUNE 7, 2008- June 6th and June 7th we saw a ball of light coming from the west and hung out over Wopsy mountain in the early evening, this night it morphed and did wacky shit, then left heading east over Brush mountain. We watched it and video taped it on and off for 2 hours. I will post the procession of video through out the evening of June 7 ...This went on so long that my brother in law drove to my house to see it and this video was what happened when he got here.

Again, as is becoming the standard, the clip first shows the video in its original, unedited form and then shows a replay with pauses and annotated thoughts and comments from me.

It's my opinion that this anomaly was called by a small IR light, possibly from a laser thermometer. The beam is too compact to be from a torch and yet as it moves down the stairs and hits objects that're closer to the cameraperson it gets larger, brighter and fuzzier. Also, the light never travels *behind* anything during its journey. This strongly suggests that it was caused by a lightsource of some kind - it's appearence as it moves over the bottom bannister and cloth further suggests this. The way the light reacts as the camcorder shot suddenly moves down at the end of the clip suggests that it was something in the videoers other hand that moved up when they went to adjust something / replay the clip on the camcorder. Try it yourself. Hold a camcorder in your right hand by the base and a trigger-thermometer in your left. Now go and press a button on the back of the camcorder with your left hand. Don't these actions match the behaviour of the light and camcorder in this clip?

I don't think this video has malicious intent, more perhaps an honest mistake on the videoers part.

"Enhanced Scary Ghost Footage" Debunked

Recently, this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evNHMcrW7R0 - was brought to my attention. It allegedly captures a shadow of a man flittering across the wall and then a door seemingly opening and closing by itself. There are also meant to be sounds of a pig and a woman crying, but they are not on the cut-down copy I have here - try the link above for the original presentation.

Unfortunately, the first and biggest thing that raised alarm bells with me was the name Lorraine Warren. In the past I wrote a detailed article regarding this footage - http://youtube.com/watch?v=o5-7jdPD2l8 (which can still be read on the BadGhosts website at http://badpsychics.com/badghosts/modules/news/article.php?storyid=30 ) which explained how at least some of the phenomena was clearly fake, and the rest was questionable at best. Interestingly, although this other clip stays proud on YouTube, my copy was taken down despite another clip from the same TV show being allowed to stay. What's the point in producing 'The most compelling evidence ever recorded' if you cannot handle simple criticism?

But back to the video. Let's try and detail what is being reported as "very scary and 100% real". The back-story tells of a mothers child who would suddenly wake up screaming in the middle of the night. Since this is so obviously un-natural behaviour for a baby she deduced that her child was suffering from nightmares and so set up a camera to record what happened. How is that going to help though, if your child is having nightmares? Also, why would you point the camera at the door when it's the child you're supposed to be videoing? If you're trying to record sleep patterns, as the video claims is what's happening, then surely you'd need a detailed shot looking directly at the baby, not have it as a side-focal point so that it could be 'easily edited out' just in case something paranormal happened.

Then we see the clip. If you watch the original clip you can hear that just before, between when the text disappears and the video starts the thunder sounds behind it go silent. Obviously these have been dubbed on for dramatic effect (because doing that just adds to the serious credibility of the video you're presenting) but it does present the question that if this was overdubbed onto the video with apparent ease, then what is there to say that the other sounds heard, such as the pig and the woman crying, haven't been overdubbed too?

Then the video starts and instantly the shadow comes into view. Initially I thought it was pretty impressive, but then I watched the clip over and over again and I saw it for what it was. This is an overlay where two videos have been melded into one and you can see this clearly in the video. You'll have to watch this on full screen or else download this video and play it through Media Player because it's hard to spot, but once you see it it's obvious. Initially I was a little confused as to why the shot suddenly appears a little lighter when the shadow vanishes and thought that maybe a light was used to drown out the shadow to give that effect. Then, as I kept replaying the footage of the shadow disappearing I saw that the picture jumped upwards slightly as he disappeared - impossible if this was a live, uniterrupted lock-off feed. It's easiest and at its most visual if you focus on the doorhandle. As soon as the shadow comes into view and starts to fade out you can see the doorhandle fade out where it originally is and fade in slightly above it. This proves that this is two seperate video clips that have been melded together with a fade effect to give the appearence of the shadow disappearing like that.

Then we have the door itself. We see the handle move down and the door open, then close again with the handle being manually operated to silently close it fully. Sounds impressive, but you never see what's behind the door. The possibility that it could just be someone behind pulling down the handle, opening it slightly and then closing it again is very high, and since the shadow looks to have been faked then it just throws all credibility for this right out of the window.

So... "Very scary and 100% real" or computer effects and overdubbed sounds? Personally, I believe the latter.

Figure Crossing the Road Debunked

This clip has been around for years and reportedly shows a ghostly figure walking in front of the car. The effect is very good and the slight blur of the camera helps to keep everything looking consistant, but this video is very easy and simple to explain away.

As you look at the video don't initially keep focused on the figure, but rather look at the rest of the windscreen of the car, particularly the top left area. You'll see that it's quite dirty has has a number of small stains on it. If you watch you can see that the 'figure' moves in the exact same way as these other windscreen stains do (right down to the shaking of the camera), concluding that this figure is nothing more than a smear on the window. It's a very good effect.

Ghost Girl in Toronto Debunked

This video has been doing the rounds for a while now, and people everywhere are forever saying how amazing and genuine it is. The video, in a brief synopsis, shows a woman walking around a house, presumably hers, that is being renovated. She's walking around complaining about the work and then climbs a set of stairs. After reaching the top she hears a knock, turns the camera and records the figure of a young girl walking into a side room. Panic stricken, the videoer runs off.

Lets hold this video up to scrutiny....

Firstly, we have to try and understand what the initial context of this video is about. This in itself should be enough to get people questioning the authenticity of this video. The woman is going around and videotaping the renovation work on her house, complaining about how far behind it is and how shoddy the work is. Why is this being done in the pitch black? She's meant to be surveying the place - how can you do that during the night with all the lights turned off? No electricity in the place? Wrong - she walks through a hallway which has the light on at 17 seconds (the same hallway she runs into at the end of the clip and points her camcorder at the lightbulb). If the other rooms didn't have lightbulbs in then surely using a torch would have just been common sense? She's meant to be surveying, how is that possible with no light source and just a small night-vision camera showing the way? As she's walking the stairs she mentions 'holes in the wall'... can you see any? If we can't then she surely couldn't. Then, after the figure is spotted she stands there just long enough for the figure to vanish and then she turns tail and runs off. The light bang heard just before the figure was seen was enough for the videoer to sharply intake her breath and mutter an expletive, why isn't a full apparition of a ghost in front of her creating at least a similar reaction? Instead of perhaps seeing who it could be, or getting the hell out of there (it could have been intruders) all we hear is some put-on heavy breathing and a quick saunter back down the stairs. This is not real fear, this is poor acting.

But then again, the above could be seen as speculation. Perhaps, perchance, she really was surveying the renovation work at night in the dark?

But then we get onto the figure itself. Just after a knock is heard she turns the camera down into the hallway and the figure is recorded. It is a good effect as the figure comes into focus with its surroundings, but that's nothing that someone with a semi-decent knowledge in video editing couldn't pull off with relative ease. The big problem with the figure however is its colour. Infra Red nightvision camcorders cannot distinguish colour, hence why the image recorded by them is monotonous. Throughout the entire video - even when the camera moved into light - the recorded image was the same, a dull, pale greenish colour. Why is it then that the figure recorded is a much richer, more colourful green to its surroundings? If an object is closer or further away to its surroundings then it isn't the green that is affected, it is the brightness since more light is being reflected back. There is no way that a night-vision camcorder would record an object with more green than what's around it. It's impossible.

If a girl was actually standing in the room at the time then the her shade of green would have been a perfect match to the shade of her surroundings. Since it isn't then the only conclusion that can be made is that the girl was recorded beforehand in colour and then this clip was digitally altered to give it a green nightvisionesque tint. Another big clue that heavily suggests that the figure was digitally added in at a later date is visible during the slowed-down replay. As the figure walks behind the wall you can see that the lighter parts of her (most obviously the collar) don't immediately disappear behind the wall, but rather overlap for a frame or two before disappearing. Again, if this figure was actually there at the time such a thing would not have happened.

In my opinion this video is a fake where a scenario was acted out and then an apparition was added digitally at a later date.

EDIT: It's just come to my attention that this video was part of a viral marketing campaign for the TV program Scream Team.

Poltergeist Activity Debunked

The following footage appeared on Bravo's "Scariest Ghosts Caught on Tape". This clip, showing a chair sliding out of screen and a piece of sheetwall being ripped away was shown but after simple analysis is 100% faked.

Firstly, the chair. When it starts to slide it twists and then jumps a little as it's moving. This is a big tell-tale sign of a piece of string being tied to the back leg of the chair and then pulled. The twisting as friction forces the main centre of force to be the front and the judder as the rotational propulsion takes it over the threshhole, causing it to jump back.

The second part shows the sheetwall being ripped from the wall. Look at the top right of the screen as it getas ripped off and you can clearly see its shadow as it swings back and forth just out of shot. Evidence that wire was used to rip it away.
