Hawaiian opportunity for Pacific writers

Fulbright New Zealand and Creative New Zealand invite applications for the 2012 Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer’s Residency.

This award offers a New Zealand writer of Pacific heritage the opportunity to work for three months on a creative writing project exploring Pacific identity, culture or history at the University of Hawai‘i.

The project may be in any genre, but priority is given to works that focus on developing New Zealand literature in the genres of fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction (including biography, history, arts-related and cultural topics) and playwriting.

The residency is valued at NZ$30,000 and includes return airfares to Hawai‘i, accommodation costs and a monthly stipend.

Hawai‘i has been identified as a strategic location for artists and is considered the hub of Pacific writing with numerous universities, library resources, networks, writers’ forums and publishers. It is also an important link to the mainland US and has a strong indigenous culture.

Previous recipients include author Sarona Aiono-Iosefa, poet Tusiata Avia, playwright Victor Rodger and filmmakers Sima Urale and Toa Fraser.

Last year’s writer-in-residence, Marisa Maepu, found Hawai‘i to be the perfect location for researching and writing her first novel, Sala ma Sina. The historical setting includes American Samoa during the turbulent decades of American administration leading up to and during World War One.

“Hawai‘i is an ideal setting because of its thriving Pacific writing scene, its libraries, cultural institutions and networks. I spent time with many writers, artists and students from Hawai‘i and the United States,” Marisa says. “My Fulbright experience provided the conditions for inspiration and my imagination to flourish. I was sad when I left Hawai‘i, but my world was a lot bigger.”

This year’s Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer’s Residency is available from August to November 2012.

The deadline for applications is 5:00pm, Monday 2 April.

Funding for groups to grow and retain Māori arts

Groups who want to see the arts thriving on their marae, are invited to apply for Toi Ake funding from Creative New Zealand.

Toi Ake supports iwi, hapū, whakapapa-based rōpu and māta waka to grow and retain Māori arts. Offered since 2005, Toi Ake projects usually focus on heritage arts including ngā mahi a Te Whare Pora, and te reo based arts including whaikōrero and whakapapa recitation; but contemporary arts projects are also supported. Toi Ake supports the artworks of new wharenui but does not include restoration projects.

“Toi Ake aims to restore the mana of the arts to marae communities around the country by supporting the transfer of knowledge and skill from our tohunga to the next generation, while also enriching whānau and hapū identity through the beauty of art,” said Darrin Haimona, Chair of Te Waka Toi, the Māori arts board of Creative New Zealand.

This year brings changes to Toi Ake. Now a single-stage funding programme, it focuses solely on putting arts projects into practice. Applicants must submit a current arts strategy, which outlines what is needed to cover the development of all aspects of their local arts. Applications can be made for up to $65,000.

Previously Toi Ake involved two application stages. Applicants developed an arts strategy and then the same group reapplied to undertake an arts project outlined in the strategy. While Toi Ake no longer funds the development of arts strategies, funding for such planning is now available through Creative New Zealand’s Quick Response grants.

Another change sees the net cast wider to include more groups. Mātā waka, or kinship groups living outside their traditional rohe/district, are also eligible to apply for funding.

Toi Ake is offered twice a year. The current funding round closes at 5pm, Monday 2 March 2012. The following roundcloses in early September 2012.

All information can be found at www.creativenz.govt.nz/findfunding and select Māori arts.

	ENDS

As ISEA2013 is still working on attracting funding and partners that will allow us to commission other works other applications would be preferred in later Rounds.

Artists invited to go wild for DOC residency programme

When two musicians explore their creativity in the shadow of Mt Tarawera the result is an album of songs invigorated by the stunning scenery and the memories of one of New Zealand’s largest volcanic eruptions in 1886.

In 2010 Andy Hummel and Holly Jane Ewens of Wellington folk duo 'Rosy Tin Teacaddy' spent six weeks on the shores of Lake Tarawera as recipients of the Wild Creations artists in residence programme, a joint venture between the Department of Conservation and Creative New Zealand.

Their new full-length album ‘All Mountains Are Men’ was released with a blessing by local kaumätua at Lake Tarawera on June 10.

Hummel says, “For us, Wild Creations was a great opportunity to explore our creativity in a challenging environment. It provided the time and place to focus without the interruption of everyday life.”

New Zealand artists with a passion for our unique environment are invited to apply for one of three residencies on offer as part of the 2012 Wild Creations artists in residence programme.

“Wild Creations gives artists the opportunity to spend six weeks in some of the best wild, cultural and historical settings New Zealand has to offer.” says Wild Creations co-ordinator, Elena Sedouch. “During their residency stay, artists gain inspiration from their surroundings and through their artwork; they share what has inspired them with other people.”

Residency sites on offer in 2012 range from the unique historical buildings of central Otago, to the far north’s Cape Reinga and the nature reserve north of Wellington, Kāpiti Island.

“Wild Creations artists are helping people to better understand New Zealand’s heritage,” says Elena.

The closing date to apply for a Wild Creations residency for 2012 is 26 August 2011. See doc.govt.nz/wildcreations for more details and to access the application form.

Artists Alliance is Now Calling for Residency Proposals

In an introductory project, we are reconfiguring our office spaces to offer a 7-week residency (Sept 1 – Oct 23) for an artist to work within our Ponsonby Road based Auckland studios.

The relative short term of the residency is designed so an applicant can use the space to spend a highly concentrated period of inquiry and focus on work that is in a nascent stage.

As a part of this residency we are offering a rent-free studio space (of the dimensions 4x 4m2 approx.) in a private lockable office with 24 hour access. The space is wired and internet connected with a table and chair.

The proximity of the resident artist’s studio to our team members means the applicant is encouraged to use Artists Alliance itself as a resource. As dedication to this idea we will offer the resident artist the opportunity to be paired to other cultural producers within the contemporary art community in Auckland.

Applicants are encouraged to explore how these resources could manifest, however examples may include:

To request art writing or criticism to accompany the residency or its outcome.

To request an informal critique or discussion with another practitioner.

To provide professional photographic documentation or cataloguing of the work

To conduct an external researcher to prepare any relevant material for the project.

While the outcome is determinable by the artist, the residency will conclude with an opportunity to engage with Art Week Auckland during October 13 – 23, 2011.

	Formalities

Please include a CV, with exhibition history and images of your recent work. (Please keep image file size to best quality minimum. Applications should be no larger than 2 MBs)

Provide a detailed plan on how you may use the residency period in approximately 500 words.

A 200 word indication of how Artists Alliance may assist your project.

Applications Close: Friday July 8, @ 4 pm.

Call for applications - Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer's Residency

Fulbright New Zealand and Creative New Zealand invite applications for the 2011 Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer's Residency, an award which offers a New Zealand writer of Pacific heritage the opportunity to work for three months on a creative writing project exploring Pacific identity, culture or history at the University of Hawai'i. The project may be in any genre, but priority is given to works that focus on developing New Zealand literature in the genres of fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction (including biography, history, arts-related and cultural topics) and playwriting.

The residency is valued at NZ$30,000 and includes return airfares to Hawai'i, accommodation costs and a monthly stipend. Previous recipients have included children's author Sarona Aiono-Iosefa, poet Tusiata Avia, playwrights Victor Rodger and Makerita Urale, and filmmakers Sima Urale and Toa Fraser. Hawai'i has been identified as a strategic location for artists and is considered the hub of Pacific writing with numerous universities, library resources, networks, writers' forums and publishers. It is also an important link to the mainland US and has a strong indigenous culture.

Last year's writer-in-residence, Makerita Urale, finished the first draft of a new play entitled The Heathen's Way and conducted a reading of scenes from the play with students from the University of Hawai'i's Department of Theatre and Dance. She found the experience "creatively, intellectually, culturally and spiritually fulfilling" and said it was "the pinnacle of creative achievement" in her writing career. "I was given the time and space to develop my ideas, thoughts and feelings and write the first draft of my new play," she explains. "I did a lot of talking and sharing with scholars and professors - from New Zealand, the Pacific, and the US - and the sharing of thoughts and ideas helped my script and helped me grow as a person. After the public reading of my play and the response from the audience, I finally accepted in my heart that I am a writer." Since completing her residency Makerita has been appointed as Senior Pacific Arts Adviser at Creative New Zealand, where she is using her own residency experience to help other Pacific artists fulfil their dreams.

This year's Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer's Residency is available from August to November 2011. The deadline for applications is 5:00pm, Friday 1 April.
