African tribes – Poetic Interpretation

3rd year Graphic Design student at Nottingham Trend University, Alexandria Robinson, had the challenge to visually interpret three poems, using an imaginative use of imagery and typography. All three poetic interpretations are based on African tribes.

In Kenya the
fierce tribe of
Maasai rule the plains,
cause them grief and
they will split your brains,
shaved head and stretched
ears are their tradition,
spearing lions is their mission.

Right on the outskirt
of the Sahara desert
will be singing tribes
people standing tall and alert
Gerewol festival is taking place
where Wodaabe people paint
bright colours upon their face

24 hours in Berlin – Germany

Each month Qatar’s inflight magazine Oryx features a 24 hours in… article accompanied by a lovely illustration that represents the city. In the June 2013 issue the focus is on a comprehencive 24 hours in Berlin guide. So what would you do if you had 24 hours in the German capital?

“Berlin is much more than the wall that divided it 40 hers ago.”

As you can see in Patrick Hruby’s illustration there is a ton of things to do and see. One of the best ways I feel to see the city is by bike. Not only do you exercise but you also get a better sense of direction absorb the culture, history and you will feel like a local. Sights you shouldn’t miss out are the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, Oberbaum bridge, all the lovely museums and of course the Berlin Wall.

South African knitwear – Laduma ngxokolo

Homegrown fashion designer Laduma Ngxokolo graduated in in 2010. After graduating the design indaba conference in Cape Town, South Africa invited Laduma to present his fist collection. Even before the conference kicked off the collection acclaimed widespread attention across Africa and Europe. Laduma Ngxokolo menswear idea was influenced by the South Africa’s eastern cape xhosa communities, where each year hundreds of boys aged between eighteen and twenty-three attend the xhosa circumcision schools for a manhood initiation ritual. After the ritual the boys return back home where they have undergo a six month protocol traditionally called Amakrwala.

As soon as they arrive home the old clothes are given away as a sign of the end of their boyhood. This also meant that the parents had to buy new clothes which include high quality men’s knitwear. Laduma experienced himself and felt that there were no South African knitwear brands that had any resemblance to xhosa traditions. Therefore he decided to create his own label that resemble the traditional style of xhosa people wearing their beadwork.

Monocle magazine Marunochi, Tokyo illustrations

Monocle magazine is well known for their inspiring and in-depth articles which are often accompanied by Barcelonas Hey studio illustrations. In Monocles issue 62 Hey studio created a bunch of illustrations that define the Marunouchi district in Tokyo, Japan. Located in the hart of Tokyo between the Tokyo station and the imperial Palace, the area has quite some history. During its 120 years of existence Marunouchi transformed from 120 hectares of wasteland to Japan’s leading business hub. Enjoy the beautiful illustrations. Ecuador tourism campaign – Banana Ambassador

Ecuador is a fairly unknown country amongst it’s more familiar neighbours, Colombia and Peru. The Ecuadorian Ministry of tourism wants to finally put the country on the world wide map by using its 24 million tons of bananas that are exported annually worldwide. The new tourism campaign presents the Banana ambassador which uses its bananas as a mean to promote Ecuador. Each banana receives a sticker with a QR code on it that shows a promotional video of the country.

Chicago – Five Great Buildings

Al Boardman illustrated Chicago’s five great buildings and created a 1 1/2 minute animation of them.

“Chicago has many truly great buildings. It sits firmly on the map of global architecture and is the birthplace of the skyscraper. Creating a short video about just five great buildings is doing this city a massive disservice, as there are many and this is simply my thoughts. I hope you enjoy it. I loved creating it.”

Old Guard british beer packaging design

As the name and the packaging design already hint the Old Guard is a is a British inspired beer. Most people who have visited Buckingham palace or have read about London have come across the Queen’s Guard’s. The guards are easily identified by their black bearskins, red uniforms and emotionless face expression. Russian design agency Viewpoint worked on the visual concept of the English beer which is meant for the Russian Market. The taste of each beer is differentiated by the form and colour of the moustache, giving each packaging a different distinction and character. Whilst the design represents an british age-old tradition the aluminium can add’s the modernity.

Situated on the Baltic coast Gdańsk is Polands sixth largest city and is the most important seaport of the country. Polish graphic designer Tomasz Zelmanski was commissioned by Marek Gawdzik – StandOut to created the promotion materials which are to be used during official city meetings. The above city illustrations contain familiar buildings and city marks printed out as roll-up banners.
