2. If you're going to podcast, do a video podcast then extract the audio and make an audio podcast. Make sure your ads fit both mediums.

Blogger asks questions to help you improve your blog design. One: What is the purpose of your blog? He says he wants to share knowledge, but he actually wants to brand himself and get work. Be honest.

I describe how Mindcomet.com's blog came into existence and describe the early days of their wiki. (Mindcomet is a former employer of mine and the former President is now Pres/CEO if IZEA and PayPerPost)

Don't subscribe to my blog. Google Reader takes blog posts out of context and doesn't show the blog's design (which as a blogger I don't like because I want you to see my design), but I prefer reading blogs in it (as a blogger who needs to read several blogs a day). RecordStoreDay.com supports businesses who don't provide the best service for their customers. Me appearing on others' podcasts is fun but get me nothing. How can you sell podcasting to a puppet festival? Not by giving them work samples in a medium they cannot access and too many work samples. How do you introduce your content to someone who's never read/heard it? Your latest post/episode is your calling card. Sometimes good posts get buried under newer/blander posts.

Creativitity.com:
21 Creativitity.com 4-4-08 Sidekick vs Laptop

Sidekick vs Laptop: I use the internet differently on my phone than on my laptop. On my phone, a Sidekick 3, I follow Twitter, upload photos to flickr, add posts to my myspace blog and chat on IM. With Twitter, when I'm bored, I'll check it. I get excited and think "Oh boy, I can't wait to get home and explore these links I've been finding on Twitter!" Then I get home to my laptop, where I've got photos, Perez Hilton, myspace, video to distract me. I'll sit down to research those links I found on my phone through twitter and get distracted easily. I can focus on the business things on my phone better than on my laptop. Anyone going through that? The lesson: stop going to those time-wasitng sites.

Popular photo on Flickr: A photo of a plaque in my flickr account taken in Wickenburg, Arizona, featuring the name "Captain Canada" got over 100 views and 10 comments (unreal for my Flickr account). Lesson: (1) You never know whats going to be popular. (2) I need to tag all my photos.

Bad: Six Pixels of Separations is an awful podcast that is CLEARLY a self-marketing tool. I do not recommend it. He reminds me of Joseph Jaffe

Good: EXCELLENT episode of TWiT: The Innovator's Dilemma. Steve Gilmor said Twitter is the way he gets his news now. I agree! So refreshing to hear someone say that.

20 Creativitity.com 3-31-08 Tangerine Toad

Calling from California. I follow Steve Rubel on Twitter. (Here's the whole story on my blog if you want the print version) He posted a link to a post written by Tangerine Toad called Ten Things I Hate About Twitter. The first thing the post said was basically he wishes people didn't tweet crap. I left a comment saying what I do is, I only follow people from whom I can learn. He said he got a bunch of traffic from Steve Rubel and he highlighted MY comment and wondered if what I described was the future of Twitter and how he could monetize it. Ugh. He assumes one's friends know about the topics I want to know about. My friends don't know about tech. I get my info from experts, like Steve Rubel. This Tangerine Toad doesn't understand Twitter (not that it's complicated). Here's his repsonse and then here's <a href="http://creativitity.blogspot.com/2008/04/i-am-not-spawn-i-am-thought.html"

I want to follow (like I follow people on Twitter) my friends but on my phone, and using audio. So like, my friends would leave voicemail messages on an audio-Twitter and when I had time, I'd call in and listen to them. Someone invent that, then not pay me for the idea.

Dave Weiner wrote a post about people listening to everyone listening to everyone and people just posting and re-posting the same links. I want to put posts out there that aren't links, but ideas and unique content.

19 Creativitity.com 3-20-08 TV is not LOST

The (male) hosts of Buzz Out Loud both agreed they couldn't imagine getting their tv content just from the internet. One said he'd do it in a heartbeat, but his wife wants to see Lost the night it appears. If tv can create compelling content, people will watch it. The host and his wife could easily get rid of cable, but since they want to see it 24 hours sooner than they can on the internet, they don't.

18 Creativitity.com 3-17-08 Ads on blogs

I's almost 8pm in Kansas. I got an email from an NYC marketing firm wanting to know the traffic and rate card for OrlandoArtsBlog.com. They have a client who wants to put ads on the blog. The stats are low. What do I do? Friends have said (a) lie, (b) tell the truth, (c) they don't know what I should do. Izea.com, a company dealing with bloggers, didn't know what I should do, either. I signed up through feedburner to collect stats. One idea: give cheap rates and as I collect more readers, the price would go up. Do you know what I should do listeners? Send me some ideas: email AT markbaratelli DOT com.

SBUX has a while new strategy per a USAToday article I haven't read yet.

<itunes:summary>I's almost 8pm in Kansas.

17 Creativitity.com 3-3-08 Movies Going Niche

March 3, 3008
(6:09, 1.48 MB) Calling from Panama City, Florida. TWiT episode #133 featuring Johnathan Coulton mentioned large movies having to bring in huge profits to break even. New Line got "uncreated" by Warner. This inspired an idea in me.

Idea: What if every week, a movie from Sundance came to your local theatre at a low ticket price, creating a niche product serving a niche audience. Wouldn't there be an audience for that? It would give people who like movies a reason to go to the theatre weekly. It would give unique content. You could go online and buy a one-month or six-month pass in advance. Devote one theatre in a megaplex to this idea.

SBUX's The way I see it cup program allows you to respond to "The Way I see It" cups or submit one yourself online. Do this daily!
-Each morning an email is sent to every Starbucks with a pdf of the daily "The Way I See It".
-It's placed on cups every morning.
-Do it regionally: the "The Way I See It"s are printed on cups in the region they were sent from.
-Consider putting b&w art on it. The art is (a) cool and (b) from your regionarea/hometown.
-similar to Gawker donating unused ad space to artists. You click on the ad/art and it goes to the artist's site.
-Tech luminaries could submit their top ten sites (by category) and put them on the cup.
-You're adding value to the customer for free (you're already printing on the cups)

14 Creativitity.com 2-17-08 SBUX Ideas

Calling in from West Palm Beach, Florida. Starbucks... again! Friends confused by dollar cup of coffee. Fresh-pressed cup of coffee from $11k machine. Yawn. Ways to improve: teach me something, use real dishes and force you to ring in your own mug (that's a stretch but some hippie people might like it), eliminate the lines by letting me order and pay for my coffee from my phone (m.order.starbucks.com, each store has unique number, simple menu, site already has credit card info, receive text giving you your order number, you could do this from your car or down the street, the cup could have your order number written on it), Starbucks is to coffee like Barnes & Noble is to books, so introduce customers to fun stuff like Barnes & Noble does. Newspapers are stupid. Bring the crap the cool little shops in NYC sell.

Google Docs lets you send a survey to an email list. The survey populates itself as people answer the survey. It is awesome, but my first time with it sucks and 70 people receive 2 emails from me, one of which is an "I goofed" email. Learned: view the form's url (not the preview of it) before you send it to your email list.

Open-Source PR: I used Google Docs to send a list of questions to all the artists in the Orlando Fringe Festival o create a spreadsheet of answers. I then sent the spreadsheet url to the press, providing them about 60 interviews (on ONE page) for them to dig through and use in their pieces. Easy to do on my end, lots of helpful data for the press. Here's the finished document!

10 Creativitity.com 2-2-08 Starbucks

Microsoft put offer on table for Yahoo to mimic Google (via Wall Street Journal article). Microsoft wants to be Google by buying Yahoo, a company that isn't as good as Google. AOL bought Time Warner.

Starbucks isn't doing well (via WSJ). Stock is around $20 and not recommended to buy. McDonalds, in last 5 years, slowed building of new stores to almost zero while improving their existing stores, made their marketing snazzier and offering interesting choices in food and drink. Starbucks will "only" build 2k new stores, start 5 brand initiatives (to be announced at March shareholder meeting), stop selling breakfast sandwiches (which I was shocked they even introduced in the first place and only brought in $35k a year per store), have slower same-store sales, discontinue announcing same-store growth (like Young Frankenstein did about not announcing their weekly grosses, which is voluntary). I think Starbucks will figure it out. One initiative they announced: audience segmentation ($1 coffee for the poor people, like the gateway Louis Vuitton key fob).

9 Creativitity.com 1-27-08 Disney Texting

Monsters, Inc Laugh Floor Texting Problems:(1-27-08, 9:14, 2.21 MB) I reference my interview with Dave Russell, show Director for Monsters, Inc Laugh Floor. I saw the show for the first time today. You watch cartoon monsters interact with the audience through the frame of a stand-up comedy show. Before the show, you text a joke to the monsters back stage. If they like it, they use it in the show. I knew actors in the show, so my joke was me letting them know I was in the audience. What they texted back to me, which is what every guest who texts in a joke gets back: "RE: Buena Vista Internet Group. That was so funny it was scary. We'll try to use it if we can. Your pal, Mike Wosowski. 407-939-6244". After the show, I called the number: it was a Walt Disney World information number. Wow.

I went to Guest Services to complain. They gave me an email address. I emailed them this:

"Hi. I texted a joke at the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor Show. It was lame (my joke). I just wanted to send a message to the actors backstage that I was in the audience. However, I was surprised by the text I received back saying (what I already wrote above).

#1: That message was not personalized.
#2 I expected that before I called the number that the "adventure would continue." It would give me a code to unlock something on the Disney.com website to play video games, give me a coupon code for a free ice cream. I don't know. But what do I hear? "Welcome to Walt Disney World Information. For reservations press 1."

This seems like a missed opportunity to engage me if I were a kid, further. If I called this number texted to me by Disney, maybe playa recording of Mike Wisowski thanking me for the joke. Ask me if I want a joke of the day texted to me or emailed to me. Great way to contnue receiving info from the show in the theme park, after you leave the theme park on a daily or weekly basis. You could send me to a website for more jokes. You could tell me how to submit jokes to the show through a website.

#3: Disney should know if my joke was used in the show or not after the show and send me a second text congratulating me on how well the joke went over with the audience. Or if my joke was not used, send me to some Disney website where I can view my joke, make a t-shirt from it, or view other jokes submitted.

If my joke was used, send me a link to the video of my joke being told at the show I was at and allow me to share it with my friends."

I received a form letter back from Disney.

8 Creativitity.com 1-27-08 Hannah Montana

Standing outside of Epcot theme park at Walt Disney World. Hannah Montana poster for 3-d movie catches my eye. Tickets for the concerts were being scalped. The movie: in 3-d, in theatres, only shown for a week. It's got the name/brand, the exclusivity (one week) and something cool (3-D). The Hannah Montana phenomenon: tv show, concert, then movie. High School Musical phenomenom: tv movie, another tv movie, live tour, 3rd movie in theatres.

#1: These 2 projects are huge. #2: They both milk content. The concerts are successful in themselves. You film it? Boom. Now you can spread the same content out to a wider audience WITH THE SAME CONTENT you were presenting in a live version.

I'd love to create something live, then film it, and do something further with the recorded content. They could take the audio from the movie of the concert and make a cd.

I'm sick. Shut up. My second post today. At least 50% of the latest Buzz Out Loud episode required them doing further research or reading, which they don't ever do! If you're going to read a prepared article for the show, and you work for NEW.COM why don't you write or call the company you're talking about BEFORE you record the podcast? Even if it took you longer, wouldn't it make your content better and unique? The people on the show obviously know what they are talking about and I have much respect for them. My bitterness is that they get paid to podcast and blog and I don't. I hate Joseph Jaffee.

5 Creativitity.com 1-8-08 New Media Douchebags

New Marketing Evangelists are New Media Douchebags. I am a New Media Douchebag myself. Some turn their douchebagginess into money. They beg you for audio comments. Joseph Jaffee asks for conversation but doesn't engage in real ones. The first episode of 2008 for Six Pixels of Separation was not impressive to me. What is Creativitity? I wanted to do it daily, but didn't do it. I won't podcast daily, just when I have something to talk about that I feel passionate about. What makes me unique?

Podcasts I listen to:

-Jaffe Juice: low-quality, good content, keeps asking for audio comments, creates debate about the lack of audio comments,
-CNET's Buzz Out Loud: If you're making a show about a topic your passionate about and that your audience is passionate about, there's no need to make the show sound smooth or like radio. When they make a verbal mistake, they draw attention to it and turn the show from "news" to giggle-fest. I think removing Veronica Bellmont would be a good thing for the show.
-New York Times Front Page: It influences me to buy the print edition. The show could be a lot longer. It goes through the entire newspaper, which shares headlines in sections I would never read, which makes me want to check out the sections in more detail.
-Diggnation: I think it's relevant. It's an extension of the website. The hosts are charming. They film the video podcast then take the audio from that to create the audio podcast.
