Strauss leads charge but bowling doubts remain | England vs South Africa 2009

On the start of what will surely be a long and gruelling tour, Andrew Strauss led by example with an unbeaten 117 to guide England to victory against the somewhat unnervingly titled Warriors in their second warm-up game.

I have to admit I had my doubts as to whether Strauss could juggle the responsibility that comes with captaincy and maintain his form with the bat. I'm happy to say that I've been emphatically proven wrong time and time again. If anything his batting has improved with the extra responsibility and he showed his skills again at Kimberley, hitting ten fours and a six in his 119 ball innings.

Before we get too excited this was against average opposition, though they put up more of a challenge than the Eagles did last Friday. But cause for concern was the failure of openers Jimmy Anderson and Tim Bresnan to strike in their combined 19 overs. Adil Rashid and the recalled Sajid Mahmood were also expensive, prompting me again to wonder whether the side has the depth of bowling required to take 22 wickets in a Test match consecutively - Stuart Broad and Graham Onions were injured for this game remember. The one bowler who did rescue the day was Graeme Swann, taking 3-26 of his 10 overs. I feel Swann is England's most improved player over the past 18 months, cementing his place in the side with a consistent spells of tight and disciplined spin bowling to improve Englands cricket odds

With the bat, Strauss aside, there are also signs of promise. Eoin Morgan seems to be growing into the international scene along with Joe Denley, while Jonathan Trott is playing like a seasoned International veteran. Let’s not forget Kevin Pietersen, who hopes to be back for the one-day matches after completing his rehabilitation from that nasty achilles injury.

All these and more will have to be their best to beat a very accomplished South African side on their own turf. But given the trials, trauma and tribulations off last year’s winter cricket tour , it is just nice to be talking about matters on the field again rather than petty political squabbles off it.

Kolpak ruling favours ECB

What have a handball player and the England And Wales Cricket Board got in common?

Well the former has forced the latter to lobby a change in the law.

Confused? Let me explain.

The ECB have finally won the battle with so called ‘Kolpak players’ who exploited the legal loophole established by Slovakian handball player Maros Kolpak.

The controversy began when a European Court of Justice ruling in 2003 went in favour of Kolpak, who was seeking work in Germany. Kolpak's legal action allowed players from countries and regions with associate trade agreements with the European Union - such as South Africa and the West Indies - to be treated as non-overseas players.

It is sort of the cricketing equivalent of the Bosman ruling in football - which gave players the freedom to move wherever they liked at the end of their contract and transformed the football transfer system.

This saw a flood of players entering England to turn out for Counties across the country, many of whom were disenchanted at their own domestic game’s quota system.

Now most of those players, such as Dwayne Smith of Sussex, have been forced to leave the country as victims of the new Home Office laws. These laws now state that only players who have held a valid work permit for four years will be able to continue to be employed as though they were EU citizens by counties.

Is this a good thing?

Well the ECB certainly thinks so. After all it is in their interest to look after the interest of their English game. And while foreign players clearly add to the county cricket game, the Kolpakruling arguably led to a number of lesser talented players plying their trade in England.

Things seemed to come to a head in 2008 when 11 'Kolpak' players took the field in a Northants v Leicestershire match. The ECB began fighting back by fining counties for every ‘Kolpakker’ played £1,100 per player per match. The money was docked from the £1m handout granted by the ECB to each county every year.

But this ruling finally brings an interesting sideshow in the English game to a sensible conclusion. Maybe the ECB and counties can concentrate on the task in hand – producing world class English cricketers .

Hong Kong Super Sixes 2009

Along with test, ODI, t20 and pro40 there exists another form of cricket - the super sixes. Hong Kong organizes super sixes tournament every year between the top teams. The rules are modified with an inning of only 5 overs and each team containing just 6 players. Except wicketkeeper everyone bowls. Wides and no balls are counted 2 runs. Also, there is a provision of retiring after batsman reaches 31 runs. 8 teams participate in this tournament which is held on 31st October and 1st November.

The teams are divided into two groups. India has been placed in the Norhern hemispheres along with teams like England, Sri Lanka and rivals Pakistan. Hongkong, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia compromise the Southern hemisphere group.

The group stages of Champions league T20 2009 has completed and its now time for the super 8's. Two teams each from 4 groups have qualified for the super 8 in which the 8 teams are divided into two leagues. The teams which have qualified are : Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore from India, Cape Cobras and Eagles from South Africa, Somerset from England, New South Wales and Victoria from Australia and Trinidad and Tobago from West Indies.

Mumbai to host 2011 Cricket world cup final , Mohali get semi-final

Finally, it has been confirmed that the final of ICC Cricket world cup 2011 will be held in Wankhede stadium in Mumabai. The tournament which is to be jointly orgainized by India, Sri Lanka and Banglandesh will feature 29 matches in India. It will be held in 8 venues in India. Mohali will host the semis while quarter-finals will be hosted in Ahmedabad.

With still the full fixtures and schedule of the cricket's biggest tournament still to come, the venues in India are now confirmed. Along with India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh too host the tournament. Bangladesh will be hosting the opening ceremony and other matches including a quarter final while Sri Lanka will feature one semi-final and other quarter final.

Its the final of ICC Champions trophy 2009 and two neighboring countries - Australia and New Zealand will battle for for the championship. Australia after being defeated in Ashes came back strongly in ODI series and now has once again showing signs of being world champion. New Zealand on other hand were considered underdogs but have proved themselves to be a great team.

India plays its second match against the Australia on Monday. India lost their 1st match in the ICC Champions Trophy against the Pakistan. They desperately need the victory in the match as Pakistan seems to be already qualified and if Aussie wins the match they will qualify too. Australia defeated West Indies in the first match. But it was not too easy for the Kangaroos against the West Indies as they thought.

Some advantage seems to be on the Ricky Ponting's but its all about Dhoni's captaincy in the other side. Both the teams have lots to do after the first match and this match is more important. India vs Australia match is yet another awaited match in the Champions Trophy.

England have opened up their Champions Trophy campaign with a win against Sri Lanka. South Africa lost to Sri Lanka but won in superb passion against New Zealand. England win against Sri Lanka and the way they tackled the top Lanakan bowlers have given them a lot of confidence. Their bowling was superb except in the middle overs.

Pakistan has won the Champions Trophy match against India by 54 runs. Shoaib Malik who was awarded the man of the match made a superb century. Indian bowlers were highly punished by the Pakistanis as they got past 300. India batted second and got good start. But wickets fell regularly and asking rate got higher. Finally they were all out for 248.

Pakistan a huge score of 302 batting first. Shoaib Malik made a superb century. Malik made over 200 runs record partnership with Yousuf who made 87 of 88. Indian spinners especially Harbajan Singh was very expensive. Ashish Nehra bowled beautifully but rest were not satisfactory.

Pakistan: 302/9 in 50 overs.
India : 248 all out in 44.5 overs

After about 16 months India vs Pakistan cricket match will be held. Its the 1st match for India in the Champions trophy 2009 and second for Pakistan. The current Indian and Pakistani team seem to be equally balanced with some special features as well as some problems in both team. Pakistan has probably the best pace attack while India is with the superb batting lineup. Unlike India, Pakistan is not hit my problem with so much of injuries which is a benefit for them.

India vs Pakistan - Group A of Champions Trophy
Match date: 26th September
Match time: 6:00 PM in India, 5:30 PM in Pakistan, 14:30 local and 12:30 GMT

The pitch at Centurion is expected to be a batting pitch and we can expected a huge total made by either team. With high scores, the match will definitely be a close encounter.

India is likely to open with Gambhir and Tendular. Sachin, Dravid, Dhoni, Raina and Pathan will be in middle order. The bowling will feature Harbajan, Ishant and RP Singh. Yuvraj Singh's place can be occupied either by Virat Kohli, Avishek Nayar or Dinesh Karthik. Pakistan is definite to open with Akmal and Nazir. Younis Khan will play after missing first match due to Injury. Shahid Afridi, Misbah, Shoaib Malik are other batsmen. Umar Akmal is the new entry who can be a big threat to India. Pacemen Aamer and Gul are also in great touch.
