It will take time to rebuild India's Test squad: Dravid

Dravid averaged under 25 in the Australia Test series.Rahul Dravid put an end to media speculations about his retirement saying that he had not arrived at a decision on his career.

"At my stage in my career it's always about taking it a series at a time and not looki ng too far ahead, so we'll see what happens." Dravid averaged under 25 during the series, providing a moot point for those asking for young players to be broken into India's Test squad.

"I am definitely nearer the end than the beginning, there is no doubt about that," Dravid said.

A media report said Dravid might retire after India's defeat in Adelaide, but the India team manager GS Walia issued a press statement denying this.

"The team takes note of the stories in the media suggesting the imminent retirement of a member of the Indian team. We would like to clarify the situation by stating categorically that these are not correct and are baseless," Walia said from a prepared statement but did not make a categorical reference to Dravid.

Dravid said it is imperative that India build a strong Test squad because it is important for the game overall.

"India needs to be a strong Test-playing nation, there are not too many countries playing cricket and I think if India is competitive in Test cricket it does make a difference," he said.

"We haven't done so well abroad over the last couple of series but I'm hopeful that some of the young kids will come through."

"It might take a bit of time but we'll build up a strong base."

Time for split captaincy believe former coaches - India Team

Mail Today, Jan 30th - In the aftermath of India's debacle in Australia, a public outcry and call for heads to MS Dhoni's role as captain is under scrutinyroll was only to be expected. And India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was bound to be on top of the list of all those who are desperate for some stringent action after what have been eight deplorable and shameful defeats.

It was just a matter of time before Dhoni's captaincy came under the scanner and sure enough, reports have surfaced that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating splitting the captaincy between Virender Sehwag - for the Test matches - and Dhoni - for ODIs and T20s.

Whether or not such a move is afoot, the basic idea of having two captains, especially after Dhoni made it clear in Australia that he doesn't see himself lasting in all three formats for long, might not be the worst move, according to former India coaches Anshuman Gaekwad and Madan Lal. "Looking from Dhoni's point of view, he could be reli eved. Handling three formats of the game, on top of wicket-keeping day in and day out, he has done it all. It (being relieved of Test captaincy) could be a blessing in disguise," Gaekwad told MAIL TODAY on Sunday.

"However, to blame him for the debacles in England and Australia would be unfair on Dhoni. After every defeat, we have a tendency to blame the captain and the coach. What were the rest of the players doing? When Dhoni talked about his future plans on the eve of the Perth Test, he was just speaking out. People accuse him of losing interest, but I think he is simply feeling helpless after such performances."

For Madan, it was high time the heavy workload on Dhoni was reduced. "Dhoni should be relieved of the Test captaincy. He has done so well across all formats and over the years. If you take the burden of Test captaincy away from him, he might get recharged and perform well. However, I would never remove him from the Test arena as I feel he is still a match-winner at No. 7," he told MAIL TODAY.

Interestingly, Madan didn't feel Sehwag was the best option for Test captaincy. According to the former all-rounder, Sachin Tendulkar should be handed the reins, till the day he decides to hang up his boots, to rebuild the team. "What has Sehwag done as a captain? If you want to make a new captain, don't just put anyone in that place. Viru has batted very well in Test cricket but that doesn't mean he is Test captaincy material. I feel Sachin should be given the task of rebuilding the team. Even if he wishes to play for 6-10 months, I would want him to give something back to Indian cricket in the form of 2-3 ready youngsters," Madan opined.

With th e transition phase about to set in, Gaekwad said that since India would be playing in the subcontinent for nearly two years, the youngsters could be gradually brought in. However, Madan warned that this transition phase would take a long time. "It will take at least 3-4 years to resurrect the team. This was the best team we have had and they lost so badly. It will take a long time," he said.

India Vs Australia Day 4, Adelaide Test

Stand-in captain Virender Sehwag flirted with danger more often than not during his 53-ball 62 in India's second innings, and he made his intentions crystal clear from the first delivery he faced when he had an almighty swing at a widish length ball from Ben Hilfenhaus and just managed to clear Michael Hussey at gully. Sehwag then played another poor shot shortly afterwards off Harris but was lucky the ball just fell short of David Warner, who was stationed in one of the gullys. But, Sehwag also showed the reason he has earned the reputation of being a destructive batsman as he despatched Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon to the fence with absolute disdain. He brought up his second half-century of the series by lofting Lyon over mid-off to get to the mark off only 36 deliveries.

There was also a stark contrast in the field placements for Sehwag and Dravid. When Sehwag was on strike, the field was spread out and fielders were stationed on the boundary, but the situation changed when Dravid took strike as the field closed in. This was a mini-battle won by Sehwag for the most part, and his counter-attack, however risky, caught out and frustrated the Australians for a while.

Sehwag though threw it away when he was caught by Ponting at short cover off a Lyon full toss, and the bowler himself couldn't believe his luck.

Holding up play
Umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Aleem Dar asked Gambhir and Rahul Dravid to wait after being dismissed by Ryan Harris as they wanted to check with the television umpire if the bowler had overstepped. Harris had not, and both times his front foot was well within the bowling crease, and the on-field umpires really didn 't need to confirm that and hold up play for a couple of minutes each time.

Daunting target
Australia declared their second innings at 167 for 5 - their second declaration of the match - to set India a massive target of 500 in 146 overs to avert a second consecutive whitewash in an away Test series.

The highest winning chase at the Adelaide Oval is Australia's 315 for six against England in 1902; while India's highest-ever winning chase was 406 for 4 against the West Indies in Trinidad in 1976.

Woeful run

Gambhir made 181 runs in the series at an average of 22.62, and 83 of those runs were scored in the second innings at Sydney.

Gambhir also had a dismal Test series in England last year, where he scored 102 runs in six innings at an average of 17.

Dream series for Clarke and Ponting
The current Australia captain and his predecessor both came into this series under pressure of different kinds. While Clarke was struggling to gain acceptancy as captain, Ponting was being hounded by critics, who felt the time has come for him to retir e. But, both of them answered their critics in the best manner possible - by piling up the runs.

Clarke, who has also been praised for his astute and attacking captaincy, ended the series with 626 runs, including a triple century and a double century, at an average of 125.20. He is the only captain in 135 years to smash a double and triple century in the same Test series.

Ponting scored 544 runs in the series, including two centuries and three half-centuries, at an average of 108.80. He showed signs of regaining his form when he scored two half-centuries in the Boxing Day Test, and that gave him the confidence to get back to his best and silence the critics.

Ashwin gets defensive

Scare for Ponting
Ashwin couldn't hold on to a tough catch off his own bowling to give Clarke a reprieve when he was on 30. But, it was Ponting at the non-striker's end, who was in the firing line of the shot, and managed to get out of the way just in the nick of time.

Dharmasena's blunders
Umpire Kumar Dharmasena made two contentious decisions in the first session that led to the dismissals of Australia s kipper Michael Clarke and Michael 'Mr Cricket' Hussey.

Clarke was aggressive in his approach at the start of the day hitting some well-timed boundaries and showing positive intent to declare at the earliest. But, Clarke's knock was cut short when Dharmasena gave him out caught behind off the bowling of Umesh Yadav, even though the wicket-keeper and bowler only made a half-hearted appeal. Clarke was beaten for pace but wasn't happy with the decision, and he could have reason to feel aggrieved as HotSpot showed nothing on the bat; even the Snicko didn't register anything when the ball passed the bat.

Dharmasena made another questionable decision just before lunch when he upheld Ishant Sharma's appeal for LBW against Hussey, who was hit near the knee roll in front of the off stump. Though replays indicated the ball would have just clipped the top of the off stump, it was a tough decision against Hussey. Ishant has been ruing his misfortune in the series as an excuse for not getting among the wickets, but he had luck going his way this time. And, Ishant hasn't taken as many wickets as he would have liked to in Australia because he has not been consistent enough with his line and length, though he has had some catches dropped off his bowling.

Strange decision
R Ashwin not only dismissed Australia's opening batsmen just before stumps on the third day, but also shared the new ball with Zaheer Khan in the hosts' second innings. And, it was expected that Ashwin and Zaheer would start proceedi ngs on the fourth day as well, but instead India's stand-in captain Virender Sehwag opted for the pace pair of the left-arm fast bowler and Ishant Sharma. Ashwin was brought into bowl only in the eighth over of the day - certainly, a strange decision that by Sehwag.

The highest winning chase at the Adelaide Oval is Australia's 315 for six against England in 1902, and any faint hopes India had of surpassing that were dashed by yet another batting collapse as the tourists slumped to 166 for 6 at stumps on the fourth day in Adelaide today. Virat Kohli's run out with only one over left in the day captured India's nightmarish tour of Australia in a nutshell.

Familiar story

Dravid fell in the fifth over in the post-tea session as he played a poor shot as he attempted to play a drive, but only managed to get a thick edge which was pouched by Hussey at gully, with Harris being the successful bowler.

Lyon then got into the act as he dismissed Tendulkar, who had gone into a shell, and the eternal wait for his 100th international hundred will have to continue. Tendulkar gloved the ball to short leg where Ed Cowan took a simple catch to end the Indian legend's struggle in the middle.

Laxman did himself no favours as he again failed to put together a big knock and was out shortly before stumps to give Lyon his third wicket of the innings. It wasn't a wicket-taking delivery, but Laxman, who survived a loud LBW appeal from Siddle and was dropped by Ponting when on 25, hit it straight to Shaun Marsh at short midwicket. Laxman made 35 runs off 88 deliveries and added 52 runs for the fifth wicket with Kohli to give India the faintest of hopes of dragging the match late into the fifth day, but in the end it wasn't to be.

Kohli, who scored his maiden Test ton in the first innings, then ran himself out needlessly off the last ball of the penultimate over of the day when he took off for a risky run and despite a desperate dive failed to beat Hilfenhaus's direct hit from midwicket. And, that implosion and lack of thought on Kohli's part just about sums up India's abject surrender Down Under.

Dilshan steps down from Sri Lanka captaincy

Dashing batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan stepped down as Sri Lanka captain following the team's dismal performance in South Africa , where they lost both the Test and ODI series.

Veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardene is likely to replace him as captain, but Sri Lanka Cricket is yet to make a formal announcement.

The 35-year-old Dilshan sent in his resignation on Monday from South Africa, where Sri Lanka concluded their tour on Sunday.

Sri Lanka lost the three-match Test series 1-2 and five-match ODI series 2-3.

Dilshan's resignation did not come as a surprise. Under him Sri Lanka lost away series to England , Pakistan and South Africa, while also failing to win against Australia at home. He took over captaincy from Kumar Sangakkara after Sri Lanka's six-wicket defeat to India in the World Cup final last April.

Dilshan's own form with the bat dipped during his captaincy, and despite a historic Test win in Durban, Sri Lanka's first on South African soil, the loss in the Test and ODI series had him under pressure.

The continued failure of the team prompted sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage to sack the national selection committee last week and replaced it with a new team.

Coach Geoff Marsh, the former Australian opening batsman, was also asked to quit and replaced by Graham Ford , who coached South Africa between 1999 and 2002.

Sehwag rates Australian bowlers the best

Stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag said on Monday he rates Australia's bowling attack as the best he has faced as India battle to restore some pride in the final Test in Adelaide this week.

The tourists face the humiliation of another 4-0 series wipeout if they lose against Australia in the fourth Test starting at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday.

Sehwag leads the beleaguered tourists after regular skipper MS Dhoni was suspended for slow over rates in India's crushing innings defeat inside three days in the third Test in Perth.

Australia, spearheaded by Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus, have dismissed India's big-name batting line-up four times for under 200 and have prevented Sachin Tendulkar scoring his elusive 100th international century.

"It's everybody's responsibility to score runs, especially outside India," Sehwag said. "Unfortunately, on the last two tours the batsmen didn't get those runs. Yes, the openers need to make a good start but other batsmen need to score too."< /span>

Sehwag, who has been one of India's worst performing batsmen with 118 runs at 19.66, paid tribute to the strength of the Australian bowling attack.

"They are bowling in good areas, they are not giving up easy balls to hit boundaries," Sehwag said.

"I think that's the best bowling attack I've ever seen, especially against Australia. Generally, when I played the fast men at Adelaide Oval, I'd get a couple of balls I could hit for boundaries. But in this attack I hardly get any balls."

Sehwag said hapless India would be playing for pride, out to prevent an eighth consecutive away Test defeat after last year's 4-0 series drubbing in England.

The adventurous opener has not lost a Test in his three matches as captain and said he was hoping for a big score on the batting-friendly Adelaide strip.

"I don't think there's any pressure on me with the captaincy as I was captain in West Indies and South Africa and scored hundreds," he said.

"It's just the responsibility of the senior player to concentrate on your batting and perform better. Hopefully, I'll do that in this game."

Sehwag said India may go into the final Test playing two spinners, Ravi Ashwin and left-armer Pragyan Ojha. "We'll decide in the morning. It depends on the wicket. If we think it's dry enough and there's help for spinners, we will definitely go with two spinners," he said.

He also intended to bat first if he called the toss correctly. "I think at the Adelaide Oval, everybody wants to bat first but if you look at the stats, whoever bats second generally wins the matches. Despite that, I'd want to bat first."
