Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has refuted all reports of teammate Suresh Raina's alleged association with any bookmaker during Team India's Sri Lanka Tour.

Dhoni said that the allegations are baseless.

"I think it is baseless. Exactly, I cannot speak, as I have no clue from where it started and to what extent it has gone. The concerned authorities like Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sri Lankan Cricket Board, Anti-corruption board and International Cricket Council (ICC) have all given their reactions and their take on it," said Dhoni, while addressing the media persons here on Monday.

Dhoni was present here along with legendary Indian cricketer Kapil Dev to inaugurate a hotel.

The recent controversy surfaced when the London-based 'Sunday Times', reported that Raina was seen more than once in the company of a woman known to be an associate of a man allegedly linked to a bookmaker.

Shock news to the Chennai Super King's Fans, Their inspirational Leader MS Dhoni could be sidelined from the IPL for 10 days after picking up an injury during his team's victory against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Tuesday. The hard hitting Suresh Raina has been named captain in Dhoni's absence.

It was his attacking batting gave team Chennai the first win in the ongoing cricket extravaganza . While batting Dhoni was hit on the arm by a rising delivery from Shane Bond , scoring an unbeaten 66 off 33 balls to lead his team to a match-winning 164.

Chennai will face Delhi Daredevils in their away match on March 19.

India Survive Dale storm

India 298 for 9 (Raina 58, Sehwag 46, Karthik 44, Kallis 3-29) beat South Africa 297 (Kallis 89) by one run

India was comfortably cruising towards the victory. Everything seems to be under control, Suddenly Dale Steyn exploded himself in an over of Suresh Raina. Two huge sixes sailed over the fences, the South African counter attack just began there. the bowlers followed were severely punished, resulted South Africa needed a possible 10 runs in last six balls. But Praveen Kumar delivered a dream ball which spun like a leg break uprooted the stumps. The stadium exploded. Smiles came back in to the Indian Dressing room. the drama didn't end there, it was lasted till the last ball of the game. When Parnell ran himself out in the last ball of the match the score card read SA 297 All out.. India survived a last ball thriller and won by a lone run.

Earlier today South Africa won the toss, considering the dew factor which may come in to play in the later part of the match asked India to bat first . India was playing this match without its three regular players Zaheer Khan, Yuvarj Singh and Goutham Gambheer. Sachin and Sehwag began the innings. Sehwag was in his usual self. Sehwag replaces Gambhir in the ICC Test rankings

It was a recognition with the facts and figures by the cricket governing body But already Veerender Sehwag sits atop in the hearts of million people.
Sehwag became the number one test batsman in the ICC test ranking with his brilliant centuries from recently concluded test matches against South Africa. The Delhi dasher toppled his Delhi team mate and fellow opener Goutham Gamhir from top position. Gambhir has slipped to fifth spot with 824 points. He had a great run ever since he came back to this side in the Australian series in 2007. He was instrumental to many of India’s famous victories. Veeru’s fearless approach in the top of the order gives lot of freedom to the middle order. Sehwag smashed a quick-fire 165 in the first innings of the Kolkata Test after his 109-run knock in the first innings of the first match in Nagpur. Ultimately his innings in the Kolkata test virtually took the match away from the reach of South Africa. Though there were some great contribution from Sachin, Laxman, Dhoni and Harbhajan, Veeru’s batting set the match in favor of India like many other matches.

Interestingly South African Hashim Amla came second in the table. He was a revelation in the series. He looked like a man for all seasons. He reminds me of Rahul Dravid. Both these batsmen have immaculate concentration. He almost saved the second test with his tremendous batting. Amla was also adjudged Man-of-the-Series for his brilliant performance in the 1-1 drawn series.

Another Indian in the top-10 in the latest rankings chart is Sachin Tendulkar, who is at sixth place with 805 points.

Dale Steyn continues to be in the top of the table with his magnificent performance in recent times. Zaheer Khan is the top ranked Indian among bowlers at sixth while off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who was instrumental in India winning the Kolkata Test with a five-wicket haul in South Africa's second innings, is one rung below at seventh.

Laxman and Dhoni put India on top with unbeaten tons

It was another Laxman show in Kolkata. This time along with M S Dhoni very very special Laxman led India in a very commanding position. Sitting on the cushion of 343 run lead India definitely appeared to be a clear winner. A close watch of todays play by the Insider . Dhoni and VVS Laxman put India in commanding position in the eve of 3rd day of the second test in Eden Gardens, Kolkata. In the process both the batsmen got unbeaten centuries and eventually that took Team India in to a mammoth 643/6.

Last evening when India lost three quick wickets South African think tank would have thought of a possible tale order collapse like they had experienced in their first outing with the bat. But Dhoni and Laxman had different plans. They both played fantastic innings, they did not rush to the shots. As they settled in the runs also started to flow.

South African bowlers tried their best to stop the Indian juggernaut. But their fielders fail them miserably. They have put down number catches. Adding to the frustration India kept South Africa on the field more than two days. Post tea Eden Garden witnessed a different South African units. Their shoulders were drawn. Their body language showed they desperately wanting a declaration.

As two days to go in this test match South Africa has a big mountain to climb. They definitely look up to their captain for a special inning to fight back. It will be very interesting see how will he take up that challenge.

South Africa outplayed India in Nagpur

South Africa won the Nagpur test very comfortably by an innings and 6 runs. It was a near perfect test match for them. Their Batters had a wonderful time in the middle, especially Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis. The way they steadied the South African innings was amazing and eventually that partnership turned out to be very crucial in the South African victory.

There is no dearth of fast bowling skills in South Africa, in every era they used to produce some of the best in the business. Whether it was Donald or Pollock or the current sensation Dale Steyn they all are capable of producing results even in the most driest wickets. what we have witnessed in the last couple of days in Nagpur was a classical example of that. It was not just Dale alone in the demolition business Morne Morkel also had a fare match, later on Harris joined with them to annihilate , the already cornered Indian batsmen.

As a matter of truth it was not a shocking defeat for India, On the third day itself, in the post lunch session when India lost 6 quick wickets, the out come of match was written. Otherwise there should have some miraculous performance from the Indian batsmen to save the match. The truth is that Miracles wont happen every day, If one Kolkata happened in the past that doesn't mean that India could keep repeating the Laxman show always. As I wrote early in one of my post, a professional team doesn't require a superman show rather it just required a collective effort from 11 souls who actively involve in the game. There comes the balance. If some one had a bad day in the office another had to stand up and fill his shoes. I don't thinks so India did field a balanced team in Nagpur. I agree that there were some individual brilliance in the form of Sehwag and Sachin. Badrinath also fought well in the first innings. The selectors went on to damage control mode and dart in Raina, Dinesh Karthik and Sreesanth in to the squad and dropped Saha. There will be a new Team India in Kolkata for the second test. I am sure India is not going to offer any red roses to South Africa on the 14th of this month which marks the beginning of the second test.

The Dale Styen Show in Nagpur

It was all about classical fast bowling on a surface which had nothing particularly for a fast bowler. South African bowling spear head Dale Styen had a fruitful day in the middle. He ran hard, bent his back and extract bounce, swing and did every thing which could possibly make a batsman life difficult on the twenty two yard. Dale Steyn rip through the Indian batting line up and made a mockery out of the celebrated Indian Batting . Except Sehwag and the rookie Badarinath nobody showed any resistance to the accuracy and the pace of Dale. It showed how vulnerable It could be when you up against a quality bowling side without your premium batsmen.

As a matter of fact the playing surface was behaved normal as it has been in the first couple of days. Nothing dramatically changed . But the South African realized,once they got rid of the reliable Gambhir it would be a matter of time to get India out of the game. With a brilliant 100, Sehwag appeared dangerous but this time around his brilliance with the bat did not saved India from crumbling down to a low score. Once he was out for 109, the last six wickets fell with in 12 runs. Dale came up with a handsome figure of 7 for 51 runs in his 17 overs spell. It was great effort by the South African. Later he attributed his success to the post tea new ball change.

Now the options are very simple for India. They got to to fight it out. They have already lost two wickets in the second outing. They are still 259 runs behind the South African First innings score. It is definitely a huge task . South Africa is sniffing the victory, but all depends on how Indian Batters behave on the fourth day. Will it be resurgent India or a south African victory ?

Azhar Backs Sharukh Khan

Mohammed Azharuddin, former Indian captain, came out to support Sharukh khan views about the participation of Pakistani players in Indian Premier League. Recently Sharukh’s opinion attracted opposition from the right wing and some of them asked him to apologize. Backing Sharukh’s view Azhar said that the twenty 20 event should feature the world’s best players irrespective of their nationality. "Politics and sports are two different things. Players should be left alone. All the good players should be taken in the IPL, not just the Pakistan players," added the former Indian captain. He also said that having the best players would only enhance the popularity of the tournament.

Azhar was banned for life by the BCCI for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing scandals. Later he took up politics and became Member of Parliament with the ruling Congress Party. He was talking from US, was attending a National Prayer Breakfast which was attended by people from all over the world. The meeting was addressed by Barack Obama, The president Of America and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

"The function was good. It brings people from different countries together. Got an opportunity to meet lot of people," Azharuddin said.

"At the end of the day we are all human beings. There is no difference. We are all same," added the former Indian captain.

Shahid Afridi banned for ball tampering

Shahid Afridi has been in the news for some time now, but this time around for a wrong reason. He had a bite on the cherry nope the cricket ball. Obviously he wasn’t trying to feel the taste of muddy leather rather he foolishly trying to save his losing side. The touring Pakistan side was a disaster in down under ever since they landed. They were humiliated in every game they played in Australia. Barring an impressive performance on the 3^rd test it has been an Australian show all through the series. The big names in the Pakistan side flopped in big time. There were spark of some talent in the form of young Umer Akmal. Finally Afridi resorted to the old art, which is infamously related to many of his country's legendary bowlers. But the poor Afridi just forgot that living out on the ground is no longer a private affair since as many as 20 odd cameras are capturing every moments on the field. Biting a ball definitely would be noticed. It was a very disgraceful act from the Pakistani captain; he should have been little more responsible since he was representing his country. Every player has to show character in not just winning alone but also in every aspect of the game. Losing is also a part of game, and a player has to be prepared to face it. How you behave in a losing situation shows your character. “Winning by any means” is no longer applicable in sports, it should be fare and every player has to have a true sportsman spirit. Afridi's claims after the meeting with the Match referee Ranjan Madugalle was hilarious, as he states , "it is not he alone who is guilty many international player has been practicing it, and he had tried a wrong method" ( read biting) . Late in the day in the other side of he world news channel celebrated Shahid's biting episode. Most of them were happy that they got some stuff for their prime time debate. In one of the show which I happened to watch, one gentlemen who is an ex- cricketer, trying to defend the atrocity, by attributing to Shahid's mental makeup. He came up with a theory, and he proudly declared that ball tampering is an art and since the game is highly favored to the batsman ,bowlers had to do some thing with the ball so that they could get bite in the pitch. And he says that Shahid and he himself grown up with this. In the summer of 1992 in england, one of the legendary pacer mesmerized the English batsmen with seam and swing. May be he would have performed the art in its highest form on that particular day.

Sri Lanka 302 for 7 (Dilshan 123, Mathews 37*, Zaheer 3-63) beat India 301 for 7 (Dhoni 107, Raina 68, Kohli 54) by three wickets

It was once again Dilshan who played a spectacular innings under the Nagpur sky that took away the match from the clutches of Indians. What an innings it was! In Rajkot, in the first match he played a blinder that could have been a match winnings effort, but today his heroics with the bat eventually took Srilanka home.

Dhoni spun the coin with the left hand for a change; he may be trying his luck with the coin, any way he won the toss. He didn't have any second thoughts for bat first on a placid track. But unlike in Rajkot this wicket had some life and carry that helped the Srilankan rookie Welegadara to got his prize wicket, Verender Sehwag. The ball was a near perfect delivery, it just pitched on the uncertain corridor and kissed Veru's flashing blade, Sangakkara threw himself on the air to pouch a very good catch. The big fish has gone. The stadium fell in to a pin drop silence. Soon the reliable Gambhir ran himself out, and that put India in to a lot of pressure. Sachin and Virat Kohili began to consolidate the innings and thus dropped the run rate. It was the late charge led by captain Dhoni and Suresh Raina gave

India

a total which they could have been defended. The partnership between Dhoni and Raina was silver line in the Indian innings. Dhoni went to make a century, and became the highest run getter in 2009. His final over exit restricted the Indian total to 301/7 that proved fatal in the end result.

In the half way over most of us thought India got the total on the board and Srilanka would find it hard to chase it down on the Nagpur track. But Thilakaratne Dilshan had other plans. He began to throw his willow in every passing delivery. Suddenly Team India realized they don't have the fire power to intimidate the dashing Dilshan. Irrespective of spin and pace Dilshan carted the bowlers all around the park He grew in strength as the Lankan hope of clinching this match.

In the later part of the match, the exit of Jaywardene and Dilshan created a little panic in the Lankan camp. But

India

let Srilanka away with some butter-hands on the field and poor bowling. And Angelo Mathew stood firm in the middle to ensure the Srilankan victory. Looking back to this match The Insider think Team India need a fiery fast bowler in the likes of Brett Lee. The pace of Praveen Kumar especially pitches like this will be more of a juicy than anything else; batsman will definitely pounce on them. Secondly

India

has to put little more effort on the field; they have to catch even the half chances too. Otherwise Team India will be soon lagging behind in this series as they did against Australia couple of weeks back.

Australia triumph in Vadodara ODI

Australia 292 for 8 (Ponting 74, Hussey 73, White 51, Paine 50, Ishant 3-50) beat India 288 for 8 (Gambhir 68, Harbhajan 49) by 4 runs

It had all dramas a cricket lover wants to see in a cricket match. . In the first half it was the flourish of four well paced half centuries by the engine room of the formidable Aussie line up.Later an unsuccessful late charge lead by Praveen Kumar and Harbhajan Singh it nearly took India close to home. But it wasn't sufficient. Expecting Nehra would swing his willow to send the ball beyond boundary, that too in the last ball would be little imaginative. But any way Nehra swung the bat with all his power as if he could sail the ball out of the ground, but it fetched him only a lone run and still India was 5 runs away from the target.

On a lovely Sunday morning in Vadodara, Ricky Ponting didn't have any hesitation to bat first after winning the toss. Soon the rejuvenated Nehra draw the first blood, Shane Watson was trapped in front of the wicket of a beautiful in swinging delivery. It seems Nehra is going through form of his life. This lanky pacer had a very impressive outing today. But Ishant Sharma was the pick of the bowlers today with three wickets. His 50th over was exceptional one.

It was the collective effort from the Australian batsmen which help them to post a formidable score on the board. There were four half centuries in the Australian innings. And the fag end of their innings Micheal Hussy turned it on to Indian bowling. He launched Praveen Kumar for a monstrous six that ball gone out of ground. There it looked like Australia will past 300 mark. But Ishant halt the Australian juggernaut with his imaginative bowling. At the end of the 50th over the score card read 292/8.

India started it run chase in a formidable fashion. The comeback man Sehwag was in good touch till he nicked one behind off Brett Lee. There started the Indian downfall. Sachin was nowhere near his best.Since then it was sorry tale of Indian batsmen trying to rebuild the innings. It was the unexpected stands of 84 runs between Praveen and Harbhajan revived the innings. Their partnership brought back the hope to Indian camp.But at the end it was little too much for them to finish things off on winning note.

Looking back to this match I believe India was missing the service of Yuvarj Singh and I don't have any clue about why they have dropped Yusuf Pathan . His replacement Ravindra Jadeja wasn't impressive at all with the willow. Since Dhoni has forgotten his power hitting for long time now India should have played some power hitters. Otherwise you will ask to Nehras or Praveens to do the same. And we all know that how much they are capable of.

Trinidad and Tobago- The real champion!!!

It was a roller coaster ride for Trinidad and Tobago in champions League T20, 2009 . Few weeks back they were an unknown quantity, but soon they captured imagination of cricket fans. . Suddenly Darren Ganga and his boys became house hold name in India. Since the highly decorated IPL teams, Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers, were in the troubled waters Trinidad and Tobago was the only saving grace for the Indian Cricket lovers. Though they have tumbled down in the final hurdle against the unassuming New South Wales Blues, they have showed enough character. They were a great sight to watch on the field. Who will forget Dave Mohammed's animated celebration after the fall of each wickets. They have displayed True West Indian color whenever they are on the field. They were of full of energy and life. and they ve got a cool head of Darren Ganga as captain, and he led them wonderfully with great imagination!!

Kieron Pollard was a revelation of this tournament. Though he had a very impressive outing in the Standford T20 where he smashed 83 in no time, he wasn't that popular especially in subcontinent. Champion's League T20, 2009 was breakthrough tournament for Pollard. I guess he is going to be the hottest commodity among the IPL franchisees. His match winning innings of 54 out 18 balls against NSW re-wrote the history. In his superman show, Pollard plundered 50 in just10 boundary shots which means his 50 out 54 came all in boundaries. News South Wales bowlers had any answers to that massacre. He put all of them into submission, T&T came home with 5 ball to spare. It was an amazing show with the willow. suddenly this soft spoken giant became crowds favorite player.

It was not just Pollard, the seasoned Bravo also displayed great skills and eventually became one of the top wicket taker and in the semifinal he guided his team to the shore with a wonderful half century. And there is the young Barath too. From top to bottom this team was looking as a great side. I believe the current West Indies national team has to learn lot of lesson from T&T. They showed great courage and their attitude was awesome. Though they havnt won the final I am sure they have won over thousands hearts. and that is obvoiusely valuable than any heavy checks.

Is Team India prepared enough to meet Australia?

Another significant bilateral series with the mighty Australians by a whisker away, how much the Team India is prepared. The recent stories were not encouraging at all, in the time of high tech and micro managed cricket, Team India is going to this series without their two experts coaches. Though Robin Singh and Venkatesh Prasad were not exceptional success they have played major role in Dhoni's dream run for the last couple of years.During this time the Indian pacers had tremendous success in the home and foreign soils. Zaheer Khans and Ishant Sharmas marked their authority with solid performances. The credit should be shared with Prasad as well.

In the past, Indian cricket was all about individual greatness. Though they had displayed wonderful moments of batsmanship and magical bowling spells, the result wasn't coming as we have wished. But last few years we have witnessed a different Indian Team. Indian bowling unit have been shaping up well. The team started win matches collectively. I am sure Prasad would have played a major role in molding the Indian pace battery. Robin also had a fare run with the National team. But one fine morning without any explanation they were sacked . It was a ruff deal from BCCI. They were not even thanked for their service.

Sacking someone on the basis of performance is absolutely right decision, but we should have the right replacement. Because the way cricket being played have changed tremendously. The game is micro managed, precisely thats why we are having specialist in each fields. We cannot run cricket as a Cottage Industry any more it needs a greater management. The "Wealthiest Cricket Board" has to take care of its cricket. Remember the story of "Golden egg and the Goose". The largest stake holders, the public, want to see Indian Team is winning. They want to see the intensity in the board. If not the public will react, the empty stadiums in Champions League is just the warning of that!!!

Carnival- the FUTURE tense of cricket!!

Those who have spend their adolescence years in the early 90 as I did, would have never imagined their favorite game gonna become the money spinning machine in the country. My romance with this great game started as early as when i was 5 years old. I grown up watching the likes of Kapil Dev, Steve Waugh ,Wasim Akram. and the young Sachin. They were our heroes, the game they have played was our favorite sport. We followed the game very closely even the test matches grabbed our imagination. We tried to imitate our heroes on the field. We related to cricket with our heart. we were romancing with the game.But since the inception of T20 our favorite game gone through image makeover. Now I can't say she looks lovely but she became young and vibrant. Those who have never given a second look at her in the early 90's sit down and started to adore her beauty.

I admitted that the game became more popular since the arrival of T20. It has revolutionaized the game. Along the game strategy the marketing strategy also discussed. Cricket has become another commercial product. Cricket players being sold and bought. They garbed the front lines on the basis of their auction prizes. I have been watching all these spectacular drama with a heavy heart. I suppose we have lost the aesthetic, the cricket has become more brash and it is not representing me, the guy who always looked this game through dreaming eyes, any more. Other day when I saw VVS Laxman throwing his bat in every passing ball, going for some agricultural shots in a league match in champion's league T20 I was assured that the destruction is already begun.

Has Dravid already played his last ODI ?

The Wall has finally pushed aside to accommodate young blood in the Indian cricket team. For not too long ago he was called to fortified the middle order in the absence of Verender Sehwag and Yuvaraj. And he did reasonably well in Srilanka and South Africa. But suddenly he become out of favor. There are many theories going around of his exclusions. The selectors may have thought that the service of Rahul Dravid wont be needing in Indian conditions as the Indian pitches wont have as much of bounce as in South Africa. and they think Rahul will not be part of World Cup 2011.

But some question being unanswered. Have India found a replacement for Rahul? I think we haven't found a right replacement yet. We have had some great talent in the Indian middle order. Suresh Raina is one of those. He is got a great flair but when comes to holding an innings together he becomes little skeptical. There are are few more names. Captain Dhoni showed in recent games that he could do the job. What transformation he has had from a hard hitting flamboyant batsman to cool headed sensible batsman. May be Dhoni himself is thinking he can do the job. As Sunil Gavaskar pointed once, may be Dhoni wants to extent his career. He knows that just being pinch hitter he cant be successful always rather he consciously started to look after his average. At the end of the day what matters is how many runs you scored, how you scored seldom matters. So Dhoni can be an ideal replacement for Dravid.

India had played more than two years without the service of Dravid and had a tremendous success in India and abroad as well. Nobody thought about Rahul then. But in the ICC T20 England and West Indies bowlers exposed India's weak link. Force them out of the tournament with well directed short pitched balls. Suddenly the wise men( selectors) remembered Rahul. It was quick fix remedy. They used Rahul as a band aid. When the wound got dried up little they removed the band aid and throw it in the dustbin. I believe the selectors have done two blunders. First they brought Rahul from nowhere to handle the short balls. Instead of sending the players to the cricket clinics they thought Rahul can be the answer of current crisis. Secondly they dropped him without even having a fare reason. I am sure this episode must have hurt him as it did to me and thousands of other Indians. They should have at least showed him respect. And I think I will not be seeing him batting for India in ODI's ever more.
