Scotland have named a 14-man squad for their two-match ODI series away against Netherlands later this month, their 1st international fixtures since December 2019.

There are three changes from the squad that travelled to the UAE for four Cricket World Cup League two fixtures, their most recent international engagement: Josh Davey and Michael Jones both miss out to fulfil county commitments with Somerset and Durham respectively, while Stuart Whittingham was forced to retire with a back injury in Sep

Seamers Gavin Main and Adrian Neill, neither of whom won a central contract last month, are both included, while Michael Leask also returns after missing out on the most recent squad. Tom Sole is the only centrally-contracted player to miss out, and is a non-travelling reserve along with Chris Greaves and Oli Hairs.

Scotland returned to training in early April after a period on furlough during the latest Covid lockdown, and head coach Shane Burger said that he had been "impressed by how hard everyone had worked and the energy that we have in the squad at the moment".

"It's just great to have cricket to look forward to," Burger said. "After such a long period without any matches, it's really important for the guys to get out there and play again. They're absolutely raring to go. It's the start of an important six months for us and I know we would like to go out and perform to the expectations that we have set ourselves and also play a brand of cricket that will excite our fans."

Netherlands are yet to name a squad, but it is unlikely that players will be withdrawn from county contracts for the series. As a result, there will be significant overlap with the 'A' team squad currently playing a three-match series in Ireland.

England is all set to host the Champions Trophy for the 3rd time, which is the 8th edition of the tournament and includes Bangladesh for the first time since 2006 at the cost of West Indies, one of the two 3-time finalists of the tournament. India, who are the defending champions will be looking to defend the title and become the 2nd team to do so after Australia.

Here we look at some key numbers and records related to CT 2017

4 – Number of wins for Australia over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy, the most number of wins for a team over an opposition. Both the teams faced off in 5 games in CT with one game ending in no result. Both the teams will clash once again in the 2nd game of the tournament.

5 – Number of Champions Trophy editions Shoaib Malik has been a part of so far. He featured in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2013 editions of the CT. He is set to become only the 9th player to feature in 6 different editions.

Here is how the top 4 teams made it to the playoffs and what challenges they face now

The league stage of the 10th edition of IPL is done and dusted and after all the twists and turns, we have the top 4 teams who will battle it out for the ultimate glory. Mumbai Indians, Rising Pune Supergiant, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders occupied the top 4 spots on the points table after the league stage. The first Qualifier will be played between MI and RPS while SRH and KKR will go head to head in the Eliminator match.

It wasn’t as easy as it sounds now as, until the last day of the league, there was uncertainty over the teams that will qualify. There were teams who were sitting pretty amongst top 4 throughout the league while others traveled the journey from top to bottom and finally made it to the upper half.

Here is an analysis of the performances of the top 4 teams that qualified for the playoffs:

#1 Mumbai Indians

The two-time champions ended up being the best side after the league stage as they finished on top of the points table with 20 points. Out of the 14 matches, they won 10 and lost just 4 and had the best net run rate of +0.784 amongst all the teams. They lost the initial encounter against RPS but went on to win the next 6 games on the trot. They were mostly amongst the top 2 sides on the table and exchanged the positions with KKR at times. But at the end, they were the toppers and deservingly so because of the sheer domination they showed throughout the league.

MI had a settled batting line-up starting with Parthiv Patel and Jos Buttler who provided decent starts more often than not. They found a revelation at number 3 in the form of Nitish Rana who literally filled in for the lack of form of the skipper Rohit Sharma during the first half of the season. Kieron Pollard was brilliant and the Pandya brothers played their parts beautifully. The best part about MI’s campaign was that someone stood up in all the games and took the side past the lines.

Their biggest contributor with the ball Lasith Malinga was off colored and managed to pick just 9 wickets in 9 games at a costly economy of 9.47. But what worked for MI was the fact that other pacers stood up. Mitchell McClenaghan and Jasprit Bumrah were instrumental in winning them so many matches. The Pandya brothers chipped in with wickets with the ball too and Harbhajan Singh did the duties of tightening the screws on the run-scoring. The bowling department worked as a unit and did wonders for the team.

Top Performers

MI have had a history of producing young Indian talents and this time, it was Nitish Rana who caught the eyes of everyone. Batting at number 3, he controlled the chases superbly and scripted a number of victories. He has scored 333 runs in 12 matches at an average of 30.27 and struck 3 half-centuries. Rohit was out of form initially and MI depended heavily on him in the past but Rana ensured that the team’s performances weren’t impacted by skipper’s lean patch.

When it comes to bowling, Mitchell McClenaghan is the leading wicket taker for them with 18 scalps in 13 matches. Although he went for more than 9 runs an over but he picked up wickets at crucial stages of the games that mattered the most. It’s quite evident that Malinga is not the same bowler he used to be a couple of years ago but the Kiwi pacer stood up and filled in for him big time.

The Path ahead

MI will now face RPS in the first Qualifier in their home ground of Wankhede Stadium on May 16. They haven’t had a good record against the side as they lost both the matches against RPS in the season. But being the champions twice, they know how to win big matches. If they win, they will move directly to the final to be played on the 21st in Hyderabad and if they lose, they will have another chance to make it to the final and will play in the second Qualifier against the winner of the Eliminator between SRH and KKR. Going by the form they have shown in the league so far, they are the favorites to lift the trophy for the third time.

Whether it’s been chasing down totals, or defending low scores, the Mumbai Indians have nailed it in all circumstances. Encounters against Rising Pune Supergiant have been their Achilles heel, but that aside, Mumbai have played like champions. All said and done, consistency in individual players hasn’t been a characteristic trait in the Mumbai Indians side.

However, they’ve somehow managed to pull things together to eventually be on the winning side. They now face off against a revived Delhi Daredevils side, who have had a couple of brilliant games and are still alive in the tournament. Here’s a look at CricTracker’s predicted XI for the Mumbai Indians for their clash against the Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla:

Openers (Parthiv Patel, Jos Buttler)

MI’s openers have had a roller coaster ride in this season of the IPL. Both Parthiv Patel and Jos Buttler have failed to carry their momentum from one game to the next. Despite looking aggressive at the top, they haven’t been able to make a Warner-Dhawan like impact.

Parthiv got out for a golden duck in MI’s last game. Jos Buttler got off to a start, but as has been the general trend, he failed to convert it into a big knock. Apart from a single score in excess of 70, both batsmen have had a few 30s here and there.

Nevertheless, the Mumbai Indians will bank on the duo’s ability to take the game away from the opposition right from the start. The two batsmen showed that they can make any total look small when they gunned down 200 against the Kings XI Punjab with a blistering start. The Mumbai Indians will hope the duo fire once again at the Kotla and gather some momentum before the knock-out stage.

Middle order (Nitish Rana, Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard)

It’s been a while since Nitish Rana, who had built a reputation of scoring match-winning fifties, got to a half-century. He last played a lengthy inning in that fantastic chase against KXIP, seeing his side home with an unbeaten 62. However, Rana has failed to get going in the last four games. His 27 against RCB was at a sub-100 strike rate too.

In contrast, Rohit Sharma seems to be improving as the tournament has progressed, which is not only a good sign for the Mumbai Indians, but also for Team India. Having started the IPL with a string of single digit scores, Rohit has grown in terms of responsibility in the second half of the tournament.

On two occasions now, Rohit has stayed till the end to guide his team over the finish line. Despite a well-made fifty, he was unlucky to have been dismissed a few runs short of a victory against RPS. However, Rohit will look to maintain his good run with the bat and take his team forward through the playoffs as well.

Kieron Pollard has had a similar story to that of Nitish Rana as well. Since his match-saving 70 which bailed MI out from a certain defeat against RCB, he hasn’t looked the aggressive batsman he’s known to be. He did follow up that 70 with a well-made 39, but the contributions have dried up ever since. With the pressure of making the playoffs out of the picture, it should allow Kieron Pollard to go out there and express himself with the bat.

All-rounders (Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya)

The Pandya Brothers have been vital cogs in the MI wheel. The siblings have had a sizable contribution to Mumbai Indians’ success this season. Both Hardik and Krunal have come lower down the order to play some short yet flamboyant knocks. In the bowling department, they have chipped in with wickets when the side has needed them.

Krunal Pandya, in particular, has been quite sensational with the ball. In his last three games, he’s picked up 5 wickets and given away just 56 runs. As he’s done so often, Hardik Pandya was back in action to finish a game for his side. Although Krunal retired hurt in MI’s chase against RCB, he should be up and running for the encounter against the Delhi Daredevils.

Bowlers (Harbhajan Singh, Mitchell McClenaghan, Mitchell Johnson, Jasprit Bumrah)

The two Mitchells must bowl in tandem against the Delhi Daredevils, as the last time around, this pace duo bowled exceptionally against this opposition. Mitchell McClenaghan, in particular, went wicketless for two games. However, he was back in the thick of things against RCB to finish with figures of 3-34.

Johnson has been unlucky to have played only a couple of games for MI this season. He picked up just the one wicket and ceded his place to Lasith Malinga. Despite being in his sunset days, Johnson is as fearsome as fast bowlers come. The trans-Tasmanian duo have bowled with some serious pace. Their intent has been clear to pressure batsmen up front. Both speedsters will look to engineer a convincing victory for the Mumbai Indians on Saturday.

Super Over hero Jasprit Bumrah went for a few runs in the last game. He leaked 33 runs, but also chipped in with the wicket of Shane Watson. What his figures don’t project are his accurate and effective yorkers, which he used perfectly in the Super Over against the Gujarat Lions. Bumrah’s good run with the ball will be a positive for Mumbai as they head into the knock-out stage of the IPL.

The pick of the bowlers for Mumbai Indians has undoubtedly been Harbhajan Singh. It was strange to see him left out of MI’s last game against RCB. He’s been the silent contributor to the Mumbai Indians’ success on a consistent basis. Harbhajan has bagged just 5 wickets this season but has maintained a sub-6 economy rate in as many as 8 matches he’s played. Bhajji’s strength has been his economy – his four overs offer several dot balls, which are invaluable in the shortest format of the game.

Nothing should stop the Mumbai Indians to book a place in the first Qualifier if they maintain their consistency as a unit. What MI will focus on is to have some sparkling individual performances through the last four games in the league phase. The Delhi Daredevils will be a worthy opponent for the table toppers. The Kotla is certainly going to host a crackerjack of a game

A buoyant Rising Pune Supergiant side led by Steve Smith host a confident Kolkata Knight Rider side at MCA stadium, Pune tomorrow. The Knight Riders would look to retain the top spot in the IPL table after a victory with their huge net run-rate which is more than the current table-toppers Mumbai Indians.

Otherwise , the Rising Pune Supergiant is the in-form team in the IPL presently with three consecutive wins. They toppled the team to beat this season, i.e. Mumbai Indians, twice, once at home and once away. Hence, RPS has slowly crept up the IPL table ladder into the fourth position with 8 points in seven matches with Sunrisers Hyderabad who have a better net run rate.

There have been a lot of positives for the Supergiant squad lately with their recent wins. Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathy have given decent starts almost every time. RPS think tank would also be uplifted with the all-round contribution from Ben Stokes in the recent matches.

Manoj Tiwary has been their saviour every time the team looked for his services lower down the order. The bowling unit looks settled as well with the addition of Jaydev Unadkat and Shardul Thakur. With the kind of personnel sitting out in the dressing room for the Rising Pune Supergiant, one can easily vouch for the fact that they would go deep into the tournament.

Openers (Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul Tripathy)

Ajinkya Rahane looked fluent in all the innings he has played until now. The classy right-hander is due for a big score as he would like to convert his starts into something substantial that would put his team in a dominating position.

Tripathy has been the find of the tournament for the RPS side as he has contributed in every innings he has played. He has amassed as 178 runs in five matches at an average of 35.8 and more importantly at a strike rate of 152.3

Middle Order (Steve Smith, Faf du Plessis, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Manoj Tiwary)

Steve Smith, who has always looked like scoring a big one, would like to cash in on another opportunity tomorrow and lay the platform for the likes of Stokes and Dhoni to play their natural game lower down the order.

Smith has missed out in the last few innings after getting starts and threatening to take the game away from the opposition. Having said that, there have been instances of complete shift of momentum after his wicket.

Faf du Plessis is too good a player to sit out, warming the benches. The Proteas skipper should be brought in for Australian Daniel Christian. Even though he does not bowl, his presence in the lineup completely changes the quality of the batting line-up of the side. Apart from that, Christian bowled only a single over in the last match, completing the quota of Shardul Thakur’s overs.

Ben Stokes would dearly want to connect a few from the middle of the bat against the Knight Riders. He missed out in the previous match against the Mumbai Indians, but the Knight Riders would be wary of his prowess with the bat. Any bowlers’ nightmare would be bowling to Stokes and Dhoni in tandem, with their left-hand right-hand combination.

Dhoni after a mild start fired it up with a half century but failed to make it count in the previous game and was bowled cheap in a single digit score, though the team won the wicketkeeper-batsman would want to make a strong contribution with the bat himself.

RPS should be thankful fo the services of Manoj Tiwary until now in the tournament. With wickets falling around him every time, he has provided the necessary impetus during the end of the innings, which placed his team in a competitive position.

All Rounder (Ben Stokes, Washington Sundar)

Ben Stokes’ contribution with the ball has been unmatchable. He bowled a brilliant penultimate over which set up the last over for Unadkat to bowl without much pressure. He also clinched a couple of key wickets. The thing that makes this man special is the fact that if he does not get you with the bat, he will definitely get you with the ball.

Washington Sundar’s presence in the side has changed the balance to an extent. He can hit a few lusty blows down the order while bowling his entire quota of four overs, which would prove necessary in the absence of Christian.

Bowlers (Jaydev Unadkat, Imran Tahir, Shardul Thakur)

Smith would finally be relieved to find their perfect bowling combination with Shardul Thakur, Imran Tahir and Jaydev Unadkat featuring in the lineup. Unadkat bowled the all important final over of the last match and secured a victory for his side. He also claimed a couple of wickets in the process that of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya.

Tahir has constantly chipped in with wickets regularly. He has also been economical in the process. Shardul Thakur threatened the batsmen with his raw pace and bounce along with early movement that might be on offer.

Overall, the bowling unit seems compact with Sundar, Stokes, Thakur, Tahir and Unadkat bowling their quota of overs. However, Smith would have a few headaches if one of these bowlers have a bad day. In that case Tiwary’s leg-spin or even he could himself bowl an over or two.

It was a different Kolkata Knight Riders team that Royal Challengers Bangalore were up against during their match over outing with the bat. When KKR batted first, they folded for 131 having added as many as 65 runs within the powerplay. Their subsequent collapse, which was close on the heels of their loss against Gujarat Lions, fired up their captain who went as far as saying that the players could lose their positions if they failed to show intensity on the field. The result was RCB being bowled out for 49 - the lowest total in IPL history.

In a column for Hindustan Times, Gambhir stated that he was seething with anger following their below-par showing with the bat and made his displeasure felt to his team-mates, who according to him were 'shocked and surprised' with his reaction.

"For the first time in my seven years with KKR I was fuming. Loss against gujrat lions was still haunting. On the back of that, we collapsed from 65 for 1 to 131 all out against RCB. It was unacceptable. Normally I eat something during the break. Instead, I went and stood underneath the shower for about 3 to 4 minutes thinking it will cool me down. It didn't. I was trying to arrest my emotions but was failing miserably," Gambhir wrote.

"As the innings break was nearing the end I got the entire team together. There may be 60-odd thousand roaring outside our dressing room but inside it was so silent that you could hear people think! I started speaking and let go of all I had. I wanted intensity from my teammates. I wanted them to fight. I wanted them to win. I told them whoever dropped on intent should understand that this could be his last game for KKR, at least in my captaincy," he stated.

'Fairplay' points didn't matter much to Gambhir, who urged his team-mates to get under the skin of the opposition players and not let them have it easy out in the middle. The captain, who set attacking fields for his bowlers and went all-out with his pacers - despite spinners doing the job earlier for RCB - made a statement himself by standing close-in.

The KKR skipper was also lavish in his praise of Nathan Coulter-Nile, who according to him bowled like the wind and made things difficult for the RCB top-order. The Australian pacer made a huge impact, accounting for big names like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, and eventually finished with figures of 3 for 21.

"When I write this almost 24 hours later, I remember some of them looking at me, shocked and surprised. For most part of my stint as KKR leader I have always been one of the boys, easy-going, relaxed and a bit of a prankster. I have never imposed myself but the batting collapse hurt me. I thought that we were not taking enough pride. I don't know whether TV cameras or microphones caught it but we were chirping all the time when RCB were batting. I am happy to lose spots on the IPL Fairplay award list but I can not see my team slipping on the points table.

"The team responded brilliantly. The tone was set by Nathan Coulter-Nile. During my stint with Justin Langer at Perth, I had seen Coulter-Nile train with the Western Australia state team. He is a mean looking guy, strong as an ox. We didn't speak a word as I passed on the ball to him. He knew his job. The Aussie bowled like the wind and I supported him with attacking fields. My being under the helmet was more of a statement than a catching position," Gambhir revealed.

Gambhir was also pleased with the way Umesh Yadav troubled Chris Gayle, who was fresh of a blistering knock against Gujarat Lions, and he added that the top-notch fielding effort further helped KKR sustain the pressure. "There was another sight which would have pleased every supporter of Indian cricket. An Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav having 'Boss of Universe' Chris Gayle ducking and weaving was the highlight of the game. Add to all this, our catching was top draw."

With five wins from seven matches - their latest victory being the 82-run mauling of RCB - KKR are sitting pretty at the second spot. Meanwhile, RCB, reduced to the bottom of the table with only two wins from seven games, will be hoping for some inspiration from their captain Kohli, who was scathing in his team's performance following the loss against KKR.
