What will I do with those extra few hours? Don't answer that, I actually have a ton of things that need to be written, reviewed, cleaned, sorted...you get the idea.

But I was happy to see Fox announce that LIE TO ME would be returning on June 7th, at 8pm EST, for the second half of their second season. It is my understanding that there are ten episodes left in the season.

And while there has been no official word regarding a third season, things are looking good. As long as the show does not see any real dip in ratings, Tim Roth and co should return.
<img width='1' height='1' He is also now a fugitive bank robber. I can't help but wonder if Walton is going to play role of a sort of heavy sidekick to Raylon (Think Hawk to Spenser, Mouse to Easy Rawlins, Bubba to Patrick and Angie). Walton was awesome, on THE SHIELD, as Detective Shane Vendrell and will be in the upcoming PREDATORS.

Based on the Elmore Leonard story Fire in the Hole, JUSTIFIED features Timothy Olyphant (DEADWOOD, DAMAGES) as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, a modern day lawman with a rather strong-handed sense of justice.

In addtion to Olyphant and Goggins, the show also features Nick Searcy (CAST AWAY, FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON), Jacob Pitts (21, EUROTRIP, the upcoming HBO mini-series THE PACIFIC), Erica Tazel, Joelle Carter and Natalie Zea (DIRTY SEXY MONEY).

JUSTIFIED debuts, on FX, on March 16th at 10 EST.

Check out the rest of our JUSTIFIED coverage.

McCLOUD Seasons 1 & 2 reviewed

McCLOUD Season 1&2
Universal Studios

My love of crime fiction goes back at least forty years, when I was around 7 years old I was reading mysteries, mostly for kids, but soon adult mysteries as well. My mother was a huge fan and I read what she read. I also watched what she watched and in those days of my youth when we had just the one TV we all watched what Mom wanted and that was fine by me. The shows that were on in the Jordan household shaped what I have looked for in entertainment since, sometimes finding it, sometimes not. And now with the ability to to own all these shows on DVD my world is a happy place. Once again I can spend my evenings with Steve McGarrett and Frank Cannon. Mannix and Rockford show me how to be tough. Kojak shows me how to be cool and Magnum shows me how to have fun.
Watching these shows again as an adult is different, sometimes the shows are not as good as I nostalgically recall. But sometimes I get a nice bonus and the show exceeds my memory.

McCloud is one of those shows. I always thought he was cool, but watching now as an adult with eyes forty years older I can really appreciate this character. A Marshall from New Mexico sent to New York and asked to stay on. The city of New York doesn't freak him out at all, his almost zen like calm and old fashioned sense of honor ground him. McCloud doesn't get rattled and he's good natured, to a point that almost drive his Captain nuts. And while the plan is for him to learn techniques to bring back home he seems to be teaching the NYPD as well.
Dennis Weaver is great in this Emmy winning role. He knows Shakespeare and judo, and for all his down home mannerisms, he's a modern cowboy. He plays the folksy demeanor to his advantage and gets people to trust him, and whats more, they actually can trust him.

There are a number of different cases he works, kidnapping, murders and robberies. Episodes are filled with guest stars like Milton Berle, Burgess Meredeth and Stephanie Powers. The writing holds up real well except for a few minor things. McCloud is relentless in his investigating and he doesn't mind ignoring his boss if he needs to to get a case solved.

11 episodes (almost 16 hours) on this first set and it was a real joy to watch. It's engaging and charming and has action in the right places. I will be getting them all as soon as they are out.

Buy McCloud - Seasons 1 and 2

HAWAII FIVE-O gets a Govenor.

HAWAII FIVE-O has added another cast member:

THR has reported that Jean Smart will be playing Hawaii Gov Pat Jameson. The two have been in deep hiding with their father, Il Duce (Billy Connolly), in the quiet valleys of Ireland, far removed from their former vigilante lives. When word comes that a beloved priest has been killed by sinister forces from deep within the mob, the brothers return to Boston to mount a violent and bloody crusade to bring justice to those responsible. As a former Brooklyn cop, Tony uses tough and at times controversial methods to bring perpetrators to justice in his small town, where solutions to difficult situations often require considerable creativity. From parenthood to politics, from sex crimes to murder cases, one man takes it day-to-day with offbeat humor and street-smart skill.

IN PLAIN SIGHT: Season Two (2009) Mary McCormack, Frederick Weller, Paul Ben-Victor. $39.98. Lou Diamond Phillips returns as Agent Ian Edgerton.

This is going to hurt. Over the course of six seasons, NUMB3RS has become a favorite show of mine. The writers, and cast, have developed a television family that feels genuine and has evolved and matured. Anyone that has written this off as a gimicky procedural needs to watch this.

While no officialy word has come, it seems almost a lock that this is the last time we will see a new episode of NUMB3RS. Based on the graphic novel, it stars Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Chris Evans, Oscar Jaenada, Jason Patric and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

An explosive tale of double cross and revenge, “The Losers” centers upon the members of an elite U.S. Special Forces unit sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. The team—Clay (Morgan), Jensen (Evans), Roque (Elba), Pooch (Short) and Cougar (Jaenada)—find themselves the target of a lethal betrayal instigated from inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max (Patric). Presumed dead, the group makes plans to even the score when they’re joined by the mysterious Aisha (Saldana), a beautiful operative with her own agenda. Working together, they must remain deep undercover while tracking the heavily-guarded Max, a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high-tech global war.

It lands in theaters on April 23rd.

Monday Movie Quote: THE MALTESE FALCON.

This week features some chatter from one of my all-time favs: THE MALTESE FALCON.

Sam Spade is being questioned by District Attorney Bryan regarding the murder of a man named Thursby. Thursby is thought to have killed Archer, Sam's partner.

Bryan: Who killed Thursby?
Sam Spade: I don't know.
Bryan: Perhaps you don't, but you could make an excellent guess.
Sam Spade: My guess might be excellent or it might be crummy, but Mrs. Spade didn't raise any children dippy enough to make guesses in front of a district attorney, and an assistant district attorney and a stenographer.
Bryan: Why shouldn't you, if you have nothing to conceal?
Sam Spade: Everybody has something to conceal.
Bryan: I'm a sworn officer of the law, 24 hours a day, and neither formality nor informality justifies you withholding evidence of crime from me. Except, of course, on constitutional grounds.
Sam Spade: [ranting] Now, both you and the police have as much as accused me of being mixed up in the other night's murders. Well, I've had trouble with both of you before. And as far as I can see my best chance of clearing myself of the trouble you're trying to make for me, is by bringing in the murderers all tied up. And the only chance I've got of catching them, and tying them up, and bringing them in, is by staying as far away as possible from you and the police, because you'd only gum up the works.
[turns to stenographer]
Sam Spade: You getting this all right, son, or am I goin' too fast for ya?
Stenographer: No, sir, I'm getting it all right.
Sam Spade: Good work.

New promo clip for JUSTIFIED.

Ok boys and girls. I love watching (most) people win and the cut shots to their families. The whole night is fun from watching the horrible interviews ahead of time by wanna be journalists to the arguing and screaming at who wins.

Part of what makes me so upset with Hollywood is how clueless so many people out there seem to be. The writers on Lost said they are not going to answer all the plot points and they don;t seem to care. It's been pulled from my netflix list. We watched some movies this weekend, 17 to be exact. A lot of them were really good. And some not so much. One of the mediocre films had a behind the scenes interviews in which the directors/writers/actors etc. claim its a wonderful and original masterpiece. Do these people believe thier owns words, I hope not becuase then they really are the shallow people they are beleived to be.
Hollywood needs to get out more, they need to connect with their audience. Is anyone clamoring for a Gilligan's Island move? Really??? I don't believe so. More Police Academy movies? I guess really dumb teenagers need something to see when they get stoned. Someone actually boought the rights to the video game Asteroids! WTF!???

I think there are a lot of great films being made, but most of them are not great. Not all films need to be great, they just need to take you away for a few hours. If I'm screaming at the screen because something is wrong or dumb sometimes its fun, but it shouldn't take place so often.

Hollywoos? Maybe you could try to make more films to challenge us instead of movies that expect us not to think.

And lets stop judging movies by money made, lets instead go by tickets sold, butts in seats. Avatar may well be wondeful but the higher cost of the seats makes for misleading numbers.

Lets end on a positive note or two.

Things Hollywood does right.
Jeff Bridges winning an oscar
Kathryn Bigelow should be given what ever she wants.
Tribute to John Hughes was nice. He really did define a generation or three.

Hollywood does get things right, often. I just wish they got it right more often.

SO, the oscars are not over yet, Jeff Bridges just won. As I sign off for now I predict: Hurt Locker the big winner. Avatar may be a fun film, Hurt Locker was a great film. And honestly, I don't like James Cameron's attitude.

MIDNIGHT RUN 2: Don't do it.

Last week, the various trade magazines and film sites reported that Robert De Niro was looking to make a sequel to 1988's MIDNIGHT RUN. In MR, RD played Jack , former cop that was pushed out for not taking a bribe (framed for taking a bribe) and was reduced to making a living as a bounty hunter. In the film, he was on the trail of The Duke (Charles Grodin), a former accountant for a major crime boss. Grodin and De Niro had surprising chemistry and the film was a hit. The film was fantastic and one of my mother's all-time favorites.

But in the time since then, De Niro has made many films that are...slightly less fantastic. RIGHTEOUS KILL (a turkey that saw him join forces with fellow fallen icon Al Pacino), GODSEND ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE, the list goes on.

So I can understand why he might want to revisit a character from a film that was not just successful, but very good. But there is no reason to. The story has been told. When we last saw Jack, the Duke gave him a large sum of money. Enough for Jack to do what he wanted: Quit the job he hated and open a coffee shop.

Charles Grodin has retired from acting. As I said, Grodin and DeNiro had great chemistry and that was a major part of what made the film so good.
de the film so good will be vitually impossible to recreate.

I would love to see Bob return to form. I would love to see him knock one out of the park. I would love to see him make a film that did not require holding one's nose to avoid gaging on the stench eminating from said film. I, like many filmgoers, want to see these things to happen, but MIDNIGHT RUN 2 is not the vehicle to do it.

I can't see any scenario in which MIDNIGHT RUN 2 is either good or a success. Too much time has gone by and the mojo that ma

JUSTIFIED: More photos of Deputy Marshall Rachael Brooks (Erica Tazel)

Erica Tazel is U.S. Deputy Marshal Rachael Brooks. Runtime: 116 minutes
Release date: February 2, 2010
MSRP: $24.99

Starring: William Petersen, Willem Dafoe, John Pankow, Debra Feuer, John Turturro, Darlanne Fluegel, and Dean Stockwell.
Screenplay by Gerald Petievich and William Friedkin, based on the novel by Gerald Petievich
Directed by William Friedkin
Rated: R

When his veteran partner is killed three days from retirement, maverick U.S. Secret Service agent Richard Chance (Petersen) pursues murderous artist/counterfeiter Ric Masters (Willem Dafoe) no matter the cost.

Authenticity is the first word that comes to mind when considering this movie, from its basis in the work of former Secret Service agent Petievich, to Friedkin's shooting on location on a $6 million budget, often using the first or second takes of scenes. The result is a very fast, yet psychologically compelling thriller.

I won't spoil the innovative ending for anyone who hasn't seen the movie. Suffice it to say I agreed with Friedkin's choice and thought it fit a film that pulled no punches.

This release includes the film on one Blu-ray disc in 1080p high definition with lossless audio and a second DVD with the film in standard definition, director commentary, making-of featurette, stills gallery, deleted scene, and alternate ending (previously released in 2003).

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/CrimespreeCinema/~3/ZbBbQlE1oXY/blu-ray-review-to-live-and-die-in-la.html" title="Blu-ray Review: TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. Well, I am pleased as punch to announce that he will be a regular contributor from here on out.

Mr. Bradley is an accomplished playwright as well as a veritable movie/television guru. If you folks like his writings half as much as I do, he will be a hit! Of course, I may be biased as he is also my brother-in-law.

To kick things off, Mr. B is offering up his Oscar picks for the major catagories:

It's Oscar time again. Sunday night, to be exact. Unfortunately, this year seems like it will be the most predictable in history. So many nominees are a lock in their categories that the ceremony is shaping up to be a yawnfest. I mean, there's no stopping Mo'Nique and that's a Fa'Ct. But just for the record, here's my take on the awards...

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Let's hope this is the first award presented because it's the most predictable. Anyone other than Mo'Nique taking this award would be a collossal shockeroo. Although the last time there was someone this far in front of the pack, Lauren Bacall (The Mirror Has Two Faces) was upset by Juliette Binoche (The English Patient). So anything is possible. But not really...Mo'Nique has this one in the bag. Which is too bad because Vera Farmiga was delicious.

Will Win: Mo'Nique, Precious
Dark Horse: Maggie Gyllenhall, Crazy Heart
Should Win: Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Christoph Waltz has waltzed away with nearly every acting prize since the movie premiered many moons ago. There's no reason to believe he won't pick up the Oscar as well.

Will Win: Christoph Waltz, Inglorious Basterds
Dark Horse: Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
Should Win: Stanley Tucci, although he was nominated for the wrong movie. He should have been recognized for his spectacular work in Julie & Julia.

BEST ACTRESS

Why does Meryl Streep lose every year? She starts the award season way out in front, and then at the last second someone creeps in and nabs it away from her. And her performance in Julia & Julia is the best work she's done in ages. Now, don't get me wrong, I love Sandra Bullock. Hell, she's one of my favorite movie stars working today. But an Oscar winner? No way. Although in a world that gives one to Reese Witherspoon, what can I expect? I secretly think Meryl could take this one, but after losing for 27 years straight, it would be stupid to put my money on her this time around. And I don't want to jinx her, so I'm sticking with Sandy.

Will Win: Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Dark Horse: Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
Should Win: Meryl Streep, Julia & Julia

BEST ACTOR

Another no brainer. Jeff Bridges takes it. George Clooney could surprise, but his performance seemed so effortless that people might not realize he was acting.

Will Win: Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
Dark Horse: Nobody
Should Win: George Clooney, Up in the Air

BEST ANIMATED PICTURE

Since Up is nominated for Best Picture, there should be no surprises here. If anything else wins, I will boycott the Oscars forever.

Will Win: Up
Dark Horse: Fantastic Mr. Fox
Should Win: Up

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

The Coen Brothers made their best film since Fargo, but they will have to accept their nomination as reward enough. Up was funny, irreverant and original...three things the Academy hates. So give it to Quentin Tarantino as a consellation prize for not winning best picture.

Will Win: Inglorious Basterds
Dark Horse: Up
Should Win: Up

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Likewise, Up in the Air will have to take this award in lieu of best picture.

Will Win: Up in the Air
Dark Horse: District 9
Should Win: Up in the Air

BEST DIRECTOR

For the first time ever, a woman will win this award. Funny that it took an adrenaline packed action flick to do so, but she's worthy nonetheless. Of course it's close between her and James Cameron, but I don't think anyone cares what he has to say at the podium. "King of the World" kind of said it all.

Will Win: Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
Dark Horse: Quentin Tarantino, Inglorious Basterds
Should Win: Pete Doctor, Up...oh wait, he's not nominated. For shame.

BEST PICTURE

It has yet to be seen if the new voting system will make for a surprise in this category. By ranking each film 1 to 10, rather than just picking one favorite, any movie from the middle of the pack has a chance to rise to the top. And I sure hope the balloons in Up are up to that challenge. But with everyone's eyes on Avatar and The Hurt Locker, I think Inglorious Basterds could slip in under the radar. Plus, it falls in line with the gore fests that have recently been winning this statue.

Will Win: Inglorious Basterds
Dark Horse: Inglorious Basterds is the dark horse, but I don't want to put my money on Avatar or The Hurt Locker just in case my instinct is correct...which it usually is not.
Should Win: Up

Bradley Hayward

DVD Review: CANNON Season 2 Volume 2

Paramount Home Entertainment
Release date: Feb 16th, 2010
MSRP: $36.98

Stars: William Conrad, Patrick Culliton, Tom Pittman, Charles Bateman, Donovan Jones

The early seventies was a great time for television detectives, some better than others. The networks were run by people who had a more realistic view of the world and understood that not everyone is thirty and beautiful. They actually cared about stories. Political correctness was not running amuck. And for me it was the golden age, the shows that would shape how I would read and watch television for the rest of my life.

William Conrad was a well known dude in the early seventies, he did a lot of voice overs and he was a trusted face on commercials. He seemed a natural for his own show. And he was. As a man who was pretty damn big it was obvious there would be less physical confrontation than we were used to on Rockford Files or Mannix, but that was fine because even at his large size Frank Cannon could take care of himself when he needed too. And seeing him pull a gun and toss out a wisecrack was totally
believable. It was also nice to see him actually solving cases. And in pre political correctness days people smoked, made jokes about the big man’s weight and acted like people.

Season two part two has less recognizable actors unless you are a genius on TV character actors from 40 years ago. But the stories are solid. I really liked THE SEVENTH GRAVE which has a forensics guy tampering with evidence and the other serial killer episode, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was great too.

The only negative I have is the transfer to disc is not as clean as it could be. But really, back in 1972 who would have imagined that all these shows would be collected and released for viewing again? And it’s a minor quibble. There have been a few complaints about some of the CBS show being released in two volumes per season, but I think it’s a marketing point and actually helps sales.

This is classic seventies PI stuff and fans of crime fiction should see this. It has in its own way influenced some of the great crime fiction we read today.

Jon

Oliver Stone to tackle the words of Don Winslow.

Oliver Stone is looking to bring the characters of Don Winslow to the big screen. No, not THE WINTER OF FRANKIE MACHINE, which seemed a sure thing for the big screen when it came out, but SAVAGES.
SAVAGES will be released in July and is described thusly:

Two pals from Laguna Beach share the same girlfriend and a thriving business growing and distributing the best-quality pot on the planet. When they resist being muscled by a Mexican drug cartel, the girl is kidnapped and the ransom is every cent they've made for the last five years. They agree to pay but hatch an alternate plan to get her back, get revenge, and then get lost.

According to Deadline, Stone will be financing the project himself. A move that would give him complete control over the project.

After delivering books like CALIFORNIA FIRE AND LIFE, the aforementioned FRANKIE MACHINE and the mind-bogglingly awesome DAWN PATROL (If you have not read it, get off your ass and do so!), Winslow has become one of my favorite authors. He consistantly such a high caliber of books that he is as close to a sure thing as as crime fiction has.

Patti's take on the 2010 Oscar Best Picture catagory.

2010 Oscar Nominations for Best Picture

This is the first year in recent history that the Academy has nominated ten movies for Best Picture. I saw eight and a half of the ten Best Picture Nominations this year. And I saw eight at the theater. I did not see Blind Side because my husband and I have a joint aversion to bio-pics where the subject is portrayed narrowly and without the shading that makes him/her fully human. I saw Inglorious Basterds ON DEMAND, and only made it through half of it.

But the other eight nominations were all credible selections, amazing in the first year where the field of nominees was doubled.

With the two exceptions mentioned above, I think a case can be made for an Oscar for any of these movies.

Avatar was an amazing achievement technologically and just as remarkable in terms of its audience appeal. The story lacked the originality of other elements of the production but it was more than serviceable.

District Nine provided more substance than almost any recent science fiction movie-it satisfied its core group of devotees in terms of its portrayal of an alternate world, but also allowed character growth in its protagonist and left the audience yearning for a sequel.

An Education can claim two incredible performances. It also managed to be surprising time after time. Unpredictability is so rare in a big studio film. And what a breakout performance by Cary Mulligan. Peter Sarsgaard didn’t shy away from being the charming villain of the piece.

The Hurt Locker--it’s hard to think of a better war movie about the current conflict especially in its down and dirty depiction of the battleground. Character trumped action in the end and that’s a feat because Bigelow puts you square on the field with the soldiers. There is no relief from the agony these men experience.

Precious-one of the most moving movies of the year and again some terrific performances. It’s admittedly not always easy to watch, but it’s even more impossible to look away. I think many reviews failed to recognize that Precious wasn’t saved by the white world. She saved herself.

A Serious Man, the Cohn Brothers finally go home to Minnesota and make a movie that seems to reflect their own life. How rare the film about good and evil and the precarious nature of fate.

Up was moving, technologically splendid, and the first animated film to be treated as a serious Oscar best picture contender. I think Coraline, another animated film this year, was equally good.

Up in the Air-managed to entertain and inform the viewer in equal doses. It also had two intelligent women holding their own with George Clooney. Again, we see character growth without didacticism. Clooney amazes us with his willingness to take on roles that put him in a bad light or leave him the fool.

The best pictures nominees this year all managed to surprise me in some important way.

This is a first-rate group of films. I think Avatar or The Blind Locker will win. But any of the eight films I saw would be good choice.

Patti

Scott Caan joins new HAWAII FIVE-O.

Book 'em Danno! A real "working man in paradise," he's the "only guy on the island without a tan and always looks like he slept in his clothes." Gruff and driven, with plenty of raw courage and a 24/7 work ethic, Danno has already alienated the laid-back native Hawaiians in his department, and when McGarrett swoops in and takes over his present murder investigation, he's resentful, to say the least. Forced to partner with McGarrett, Danno is initially leery of their association -- but as he grows more familiar with his maverick new boss, he begins to appreciate the opportunity to work with McGarrett. And indeed, he quickly becomes an indispensable member of McGarrett's elite team, not to mention McGarrett's trusted associate and friend.

Caan is best known as Turk Malloy (bickering brother of Casey Affleck) in the Ocean's movies.

He joins Taryn Manning(Mary Ann McGarrett), Alex O'Loughlin (Lt. The films were commissioned by Huw Kennair Jones, Commissioning Editor, Drama, Sky1 HD and Sky1 and thorne: sleepyhead will be directed by Emmy® award-winner Stephen Hopkins (24, Californication, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers) from scripts adapted by Jim Keeble and Dudi Appleton (Trial & Retribution, Silent Witness).Sky1 will broadcast the films as a six-part drama series in the autumn.

The THORNE series is part of Sky1's multi-million pound HD drama investment fund. Principal photography commenced on thorne: sleepyhead in London today, with production on thorne: scaredy cat to commence in late April.

BAFTA® nominee David Morrissey (State Of Play, Red Riding, Nowhere Boy) stars in the title role as DI Tom Thorne and heads an all-star cast including Natascha McElhone (Californication, Solaris, The Truman Show), Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes, Happy Go Lucky, Little Dorrit) and Aidan Gillen (Queer As Folk, The Wire).

Kennair-Jones commented: "We’re really excited to be bringing Mark Billingham’s iconic Tom Thorne to life here on Sky 1 and it’s a testament to the ambitions of the channel that we’ve secured such a fantastic line up both on and off screen. The combination of Mark Billingham, Stephen Hopkins and an amazing cast headed by David Morrissey means that Thorne is going to be a brilliantly original detective series that’ll constantly astound and surprise the audience - it’s going to be incredible."

David Morrissey added: “I am delighted to be bringing Tom Thorne to the screen. Having been a fan of Mark Billingham's books for years, it's a great privilege to be able to play such an exciting character. I'm also chuffed to be reunited with Stephen Hopkins who is one of the best directors I've had the pleasure of working with.”

Mark Billingham said: "I'm hugely excited to see the books brought to the screen by such an incredible array of talent on both sides of the camera. David Morrissey was always the actor I wanted to play Tom Thorne and the combination of David and the rest of the amazing cast, Stephen Hopkins and the team at Sky is more than any author could ask for."

Jolyon Symonds, Stagereel Limited, said: “We’re thrilled to commence principal photography on this project – it’s been nearly two years since Mark and David joined forces with Jim & Dudi to start work on Sleepyhead, with the ongoing support of Sky. We’re all delighted with Stephen’s involvement and the level of international casting that we’ve been able to bring to the films. ContentFilm provides us with a genuine international presence so we hope we’ll be creating an enduring franchise.”

thorne: sleepyhead is a nail-biting thriller following DI Tom Thorne’s investigation into a mysterious serial killer. His first three victims ended up dead. His fourth was not so fortunate. Alison Willetts is unlucky to be alive. She has survived a stroke, deliberately induced by skilful manipulation of pressure points on the head and neck. She can see, hear and feel, she is aware of everything going on around her, but she is completely unable to move or communicate. It’s called Locked-In Syndrome. In leaving Alison Willetts alive, the police believe the killer's made his first mistake.

Then D. I. Tom Thorne discovers the horrifying truth: it isn’t Alison who is the mistake, it’s the three women already dead and Thorne knows that they are unlikely to be the last. For the killer seems to be getting his kicks out of toying with Thorne as much as he is pursuing his sick fantasy. Thorne must find a man whose agenda is terrifyingly unique, and Alison, the one person who holds the key to the killer’s identity, is unable to tell anybody.

thorne: sleepyhead will principally be shot on location in and around London with Whitechapel and Shoreditch providing some key locations.

sleepyhead was the first in a series of novels featuring Detective Inspector Tom Thorne. It was first published in the UK by Little Brown in August 2001 and entered the Sunday Times Top Ten Bestseller list before becoming the biggest selling debut novel of the summer. sleepyhead was published in the US by Harper Collins.

thorne: scaredy cat will see David Morrissey, Eddie Marsan and Aidan Gillen reprising their roles in an adaptation of Billingham’s second DI Tom Thorne thriller, where killing becomes a team sport. The film depicts a vicious, calculated murder. The killer selected his victim at Euston station, followed her home on the tube, and strangled her to death in front of her child. At the same time, killed in the same way, a second body is discovered at the back of King’s Cross station. It is a grisly coincidence that eerily echoes the murder of two other women, stabbed to death months before on the same day. Thorne discovers that this is not a single serial killer he’s up against, but two of them.

But whilst the methods might be the same, the manner of the killings is strikingly different and Thorne comes to realise that he is hunting two very different killers. One is ruthless and in control, while his partner in crime is submissive, compliant, terrified.

scaredy cat was first published in the UK by Little Brown in July 2002. It was nominated for the Crime Writers Association Gold Dagger for best crime novel of the year and won the Sherlock Award for best detective created by a UK author.

thorne: sleepyhead and thorne: scaredy cat are both Stagereel / Cité-Amérique co-productions for Sky1 in association with Movie Central, The Movie Network, 87 Films and Artists Studio. The film will be shot on HD CAM-SR for broadcast on Sky1 and Sky1 HD autumn 2010, followed by a worldwide theatrical release. ContentFilm will handle worldwide distribution rights, excluding the UK and Australia.

thorne: sleepyhead and thorne: scaredy cat will be Exec Produced by Huw Kennair Jones, Mark Billingham, Jim Keeble, Dudi Appleton, Paul Morrissey, Stephen Hopkins, Daniel Proulx, Lorraine Richard, Justin Thomson Glover and Patrick Irwin and Greg Dummett is co-producing for Cité-Amérique. Jolyon Symonds is the Producer with Stephen Hopkins directing the first film and executive producing both. The films were adapted for the screen by Jim Keeble and Dudi Appleton

This sounds promising and I hope it rocks! Mark is a hell of a good guy and his books are top notch.

DVD Review: BARNABY JONES The First Season

Paramount Home Entertainment
Release date: Feb 16th, 2010
MSRP: $39.98

Stars: Buddy Ebsen, Lee Meriwether, Sandra de Bruin, Brendan Dillon, Bill Erwin

OK, I’ll admit it. When this was on I made fun of the old guy solving crimes. But because of my mother’s love for crime fiction TV shows I watched every week. Back in the day nobody did these shows as well as Quinn Martin and this is one of the shows I’ve been waiting for on DVD.

The opening premise is actually great, Jones comes out of retirement when his son is killed. He continues to solve crimes with the aid of his daughter in Law played by the AWESOME Lee Meriwether. Like Cannon the first thought is to wonder what the Hell this guy is doing working as a PI. But though he’s not chasing bad guys down alleys he has worlds of experience and you believe it. That’s in part to Buddy Epson being good at what he does. What he also does is really make you like the guy.
I love the pilot. Great story telling Murder In The Dollhouse is an episode about an author being killed for something in his book, a plot that was popular in those days but still works great. Sunday: Doomsday is a wonderful beat the clock episode as someone is planning to kill Jones and lets him know ahead of time

William Conrad is in the pilot as Frank Cannon. The second episode has William Shatner. The character of Jones was also on an episode of Cannon, The Deadly Conspiracy in 1975’s season 5 of Cannon. The crossover was a nice touch and is still used on occasion today. The show ran for 8 seasons proving you don’t have to be young and pretty to be success on TV as a detective.

I loved watching these again, and as an adult I can appreciate just how well they were done. I can’t wait for more!

Jon

De Niro, Cooper to star in Alan Glynn's THE DARK FIELDS.

Variety is reporting that Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper will star in THE DARK FIELDS. The DARK FIELDS is based on the 2001 novel by Alan Glynn.

Imagine a drug that makes your brain function with perfect efficiency, tapping into your most fundamental resources of intelligence and drive, releasing all the passive knowledge you'd ever accumulated. A drug that made you focused, charming, fast, even attractive. Eddie Spinola is on such a drug. It's called MDT-48, and it's Viagra for the brain-a designer drug that's redesigning his life. But while MDT is helping Eddie achieve the kind of success he's only dreamed about, it's also chipping away at his sanity-splitting headaches, spontaneous blackouts, violent outbursts. And now that he's hooked and his supply is running low, Eddie must venture into the drug's dark past to feed his habit. What he discovers proves that MDT, once a dream come true, has become his worst nightmare.

Cooper will be playing Spinola, with De Niro playing a millionaire that goes after Spinola, wanting to acquire the drug.

Coming Soon says they have heard rumors that Elizabeth Banks (ZACH AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO, DEFINITELY, MAYBE) could also be coming on board.

Neil Burger TEH ILLUSIONIST, THE LUCKY ONES) will direct. Burger has never had big success, but has made some interesting films. The summary of this sounds right up his alley. Leslie Dixon is handling the screenplay. Dixon has been writing scripts for over twenty years, starting with 1987's OUTRAGOUS FORTUNE and her resume includes MRS. DOUBTFIRE and JUST LIKE HEAVEN. She was one of over a half dozen to play with the script for the upcoming remake of Hitchcock's THE BIRDS.

Filming starts in Philadelphia in May.

Я очень рад, ведь я, наконец, возвращаюсь домой

Is this the next big show to be remade by an American studio?
Can't say just yet......
