Rich Katz lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with his wife, Lynn, and two cats, Felix and Scout. He has a Ph.D. in Speech Pathology, but learned his most valuable lessons working in his father’s jewelry store in Boston’s Combat Zone, next door to the infamous Gilded Cage, where Rich watched his Dad handle cops and crooks, entertainers and escorts, and anyone else on the make. He’s a lifelong fan of crime fiction and film noir, and in January of this year, studied crime writing with Seth on his Stanford online course. This story is the result of that course and is Rich’s first work of crime fiction.

Reading this week's story is Daryl Wood Gerber a fellow student in the Stanford class with Rich. Daryl Wood Gerber lives in California and is a writer, actress, and voice talent. Her website is www.darylwoodgerber.com. We hope to be hearing from her soon on the CrimeWav.

John Dodds is a Scottish writer now living in Bulgaria. His first crime novel, Bone Machines, came out in 2007, and his second, Kali's Kiss, is doing the rounds seeking an agent and a publisher. His short stories have appeared in a bunch of print and online publications, and three of them received honourable mentions in The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror anthology.

Alasdair Stuart, who reads Crossing the Border, is one of the hosts of the excellent horror podcast magazine, Pseudopod, which ran John's story, Rapunzel's Room, in episode 70. You'll find lots of great stories there; just log on to www.pseudopod.org.

Yes. And because the number 33 is special, I'd like to dedicate this episode to old Larry Bird, who was looking terrible at this week's NCAA championship game. Here's to feeling OK when you wake up in the morning, Larry.

Rafe McGregor worked in law enforcement for eleven years before becoming a crime fiction author. He writes both historical and hardboiled mysteries, and enjoys reading Philip Marlowe as much as Sherlock Holmes.

His first novel, The Architect of Murder, was published in February: twenty thousand war dead, the will of the wealthiest man in the Empire, the coronation of Edward VII, and a hero with post traumatic stress disorder… murder and mayhem on the mean streets of 1902 Westminster. Awesome!!

This week we're staying on the other side of the pond for James Green's story "Tommy, Jimmy and Me"--something of a prelude to his crime novel Bad Catholics available now everywhere books are sold. Is this story true? I guess you'll have to track down James or Jimmy Costello to find out. One thing: if you find Jimmy Costello, be careful.

James Green is a British writer and broadcaster who turned to writing as a full time profession after a 25 year career in teaching. He has had over 40 titles published in various genres, from educational text books to travel guides to crime novels. His latest publication is called Bad Catholics
(2008 Luath), the first of a trilogy chronicling the exploits of reformed gangster Jimmy Costello. Green currently lives in Leicester.

This book actually reminds me a lot of my friend Dave Zeltserman's awesome new novel, Pariah
, out now from Serpent's Tail.

In addition to me getting all excited about PALMS SUNDAY, podcasting, and how I got my deal with Random House for JACK WAKES UP (May 5th - Three Rivers Press), coming in exactly one month!, we've also got two great promos this week!

Al was born in Orkney, but has lived in Edinburgh for most of his adult life. His first novel, Two-Way Split, was shortlisted for the CWA Debut Dagger and went on to win the 2007 Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel Of The Year. His second novel, Kiss Her Goodbye, was nominated for Edgar, Anthony and Gumshoe awards. He is also the author of the novels Hard Man, winner of the inaugural Spinetingler award for Best Novel - New Voice, and Savage Night, plus the novella, Kill Clock, for emergent adult readers. His fifth novel, Slammer, has just hit the shops in the UK and is out in the US in November.

Bill Crider is the author of more than fifty published novels and numerous short stories. For as long as he can remember Basil Sands has been using facts and imagination to weave stories for anyone who would listen.

The tapestry on which his tales began to form started with his birth in 1968 in rural interior Alaska and his school years among the cornfields of Ohio where he wished to be somewhere else, anywhere else, as long as it was exciting.

The pallete of experiences from which he has been able to draw for the craft is as widely varied as can be. After finishing school he moved back to Alaska, then has lived in San Diego, Washington DC, Baltimore Md., and Columbus Ohio.

In 1988 he tried to fulfill his lifelong dream of a career in the Marines but ankle injuries in boot camp got him sent home after only six months with a relatively minor yet permanent medical disability that barred him from reenlistment.Having no other career plan for the future, he worked in a wide variety of fields (many simultaneously) including restaurant manager, military food service manager for the National Security Agency (chef to the spies), owned & operated a custom computer shop, worked as a carpenter, farmer, stage actor, lumberjack, tv commercial voice actor, Wilderness Rescue Certified Emergency Medical Technician, computer network manager, helpdesk supervisor, Boy Scout leader, IT training specialist, radio talk show host, computer forensics technician, and youth minister.

After 9/11 he did get to realize part of his military aspirations, albeit in a much smaller role than he had hoped, when he joined the Alaska State Defense Force.He spent three years as a sergeant in 492nd Coastal Scouts patrolling and guarding the waters and coastline around Whittier Alaska and was named Alaska Soldier of the Year in 2003.

In case you still think he's just a pansy artist, he also happens to be an expert marksman with a variety of weapons and can bench press nearly 400 lbs.

This plethora of experiences has given him a background of actual hands on knowledge that can make a story come to life with details that others may miss. He currently lives in Anchorage Alaska with his beautiful wife of over twenty years and their three sons.

Long story short, Julio showed this story to a friend of his who is a sound designer and his friend gather the fine cast to record this week's episode.

Keith Rawson lives in the Phoenix, Az. suburb of Gilbert with his wife, daughter, and dog. He works as an Education counselor and has been writing off and on for the past fifteen years. Hello all youse CrimeWAV criminals. It's your friendly producer, the MysteryDawg bringing youse this week's episode. This is an all Dawg episode in that I selected the stories from my two fictions sites, Powder Burn Flash and Darkest Before the Dawn. I recorded the stories and edited and produced the episode. This was a great deal of fun to do and I want to thank Seth for allowing me this opportunity.

This week we have BEER from Darkest Before the Dawn by David Price. David is an ex college jock and retired probation officer residing in Cailfornia. Writing is a recent hobby in his retirement. His efforts can be seen at Thuglit #28, A Twist of Noir 016 and the Flash Fiction Offensive at Out of the Gutter.

Our 2nd story comes from James C. Clar. James' Requiem of Wind and Rain appeared in July 2008 on Darkest Before the Dawn. James is a teacher and a writer living in upstate New York. His work has been published in print as well as on the internet. Most recently, his short fiction appeared in Taj Mahal Review, The Magazine of Crime and Suspense, Everyday Fiction, Pen Pricks Micro-Fiction, Orchard Press Mysteries, Coffee Cramp eZine and of course Powder Burn Flash.

Lastly, Cormac Brown gives us the flash fiction piece BITCH. Bitch appears in the January 2009 edition of Powder Burn Flash. Cormac Brown is his pen name. He is an up and slumming witer in the city of Saint Francis and he is following in the footsteps of Hammett...minus the TB and working for the Pinkerton Agency. This week we have New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly. He can be found online at http://michaelconnelly.com/

Our bookstore of the week is The Mystery Bookstore in Los Angeles, where most of Mike's books are set.

Michael Connelly is widely known for his series character LAPD Detective Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch. His first book, THE BLACK ECHO was published in 1992 and won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. He has also written a few non-series thrillers, THE POET (1996) and BLOOD WORK (1998). Blood Work was adpated as a movie of the same name by Clint Eastwood in 2002. In 2002, Connelly released two novels, one a Harry Bosch novel, CITY OF BONES and a stand-alone thriller, CHASING THE DIME. In addition to the above, Connelly wrote in 2007, THE OVERLOOK, based on the New York Times serialization, it was his 18th novel.

Which brings us to the Mickey Haller novels. THE LINCOLN LAWYER (2005)was Connelly's first legal thriller featuring Mickey Haller. There is a reference in the book to Connelly's other characters, but we'll let you figure that out. The book debuted at #1 on the NY Times bestseller list. In October 2008, Connelly released the follow up called THE BRASS VERDICT and this week's story is the "lost chapter" from the book.

Connelly's next book is scheduled for May 2009, and called THE SCARECROW. A limited edition of this novel will be available from Dennis McMillan Publications in March or April.

Michael Connelly has served as the President of the Mystery Writers of America (2003-2005) and edited numerous anthologies. His previous work as a journalist on the crime beat of the Los Angeles Times has served as the basis for a few of his novels.

Craig Clevenger is the author of two outstanding novels, The Contortionist's Handbook and Dermaphoria.

Released in 2002, The Contortionist's Handbook has been a slow, but steady sales climber and has been translated into many languages. Authors Chuck Palahnuik and Irvine Welsh have praised this book and Clevenger's neo-noir writing style. Last year Handbook was optioned for the big screen.

Dermaphoria was released in 2005 and was Craig's "problem child" as they were not on speaking terms for periods of time or in a state of writer euphoria during good times. The first manuscript met its demise by paper shredder.

Craig is currently on work on his third novel based upon the short story called The Fade.

This week's story, The Numbers Game, is featured in the recently released San Francisco Noir 2: The Classics.

Scott Phillips is the author of three of the most highly acclaimed crime novels of recent years. His debut novel, The Ice Harvest, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and won the California Book Award, a Silver Medal for Best First Fiction, and was a finalist for the Edgar Awards, the Hammett Prize and the Anthony Award. The book was made into a feature movie starring John Cusack and Billy Bob Thorton and was well received by critics and fans alike.

Scott followed up the success of The Ice Harvest with The Walkaway, and his third novel, Cottonwood. Both enjoyed equal success.

Scott has also contributed his short stories to several anthologies including Paris Noir and Measures of Poison, an anthology celebrating Dennis McMillan's 25 years as a publisher of noir.

Movie pick this week is Scott Phillips’s Ice Harvest, starring John Cusack, Billy Bob Thornton (the ugliest dude ever to share a woman with Brad Pitt) and directed by fellow Wash U (in St. Louis) alum and Ghostbuster Harold Ramis—that’s right, I was once a WU Bear. Was back in the early days.
