Not directly on the particular post, but an excellent array of answers from some very smart people all the same, albeit not on the medium that I expected: LinkedIn.
As a follow-up and to showcase these answers, I thought I'd post the responses to the Question which I posted on LinkedIn a week back: "Would you consider using Twitter for Intranet Communication?"

Note: Some scrolling may be required. Blogger's Wysiwig editors aren't quite as perfect, but they did to an impressive job of copying most of the content from LinkedIn correctly nevertheless. Kudos to Evan Williams, Pyra Labs and Google.
It concerns the use of a medium such as Twitter, and whether it can be utilized for faster Intranet Communication, provision of short-burst updates to anyone and everyone within a company if necessary, something which would Highly increase Efficiency in an environment with rapidly changing requirements.

Clarification added:

Adding another little idea based upon the answers. If not publicly, would an independent deployment of Twitter, as discussed in the aforementioned article, on your own company's server, which is perfectly private and which can be tweaked, be more acceptable?
If it is "special" in any way it is because of its viral nature.

A viral nature isn't really that beneficial in the app you describe as you can, to a degree, mandate usage of whichever application you prefer. The main advantage of Twitter would be that some may already use it, and you can leverage the existing application support on mobile platforms.

Other options which make sense for this sort of application include Google Reader, RSS, and Jabber.

I would also question the need for such an application. I think there is a trend for people to be obsessed with "real-time" communications for the sake of it, not because there is a real need or requirement to fill. This sort of irrational obsession is what has driven tools like Blackberry.

Real-time messaging can be useful for a small subset of applications (share trading, monitoring apps, etc.) where the necessity for fast communications is a key part of the application, but it is totally unnecessary for most of the usage people promote it for, including email (where the "real-time" aspect of push-email systems is often a marketing illusion anyway).

In fact this sort of real-time messaging can be immensely disruptive (in a bad way) as very often distracts people from being productive.
If you want publicity, then communicating using a public medium is desirable because it piques people's interest. People will follow you because they want to be in the know.

Otherwise, you're better off using internal IRC, e-mail, or other (secure) IM protocols.
Twitter is just a web app that reinvents existing technologies for enabling real-time communication. Other mature protocols are suitable for this.
In a business context immediate communication is usually two-way. Someone needs something from another person. Twitter is more of an asynchronous "This is what I am doing now" type of platform. Not sure how helpful this can be in the context you describe.
Yammer has a desktop client and runs on phones, as well, so it is like a Twitter for your company only.
Google Sites makes adding content to an Intranet child's play and means that responsibility for content can be handed off to individual staff members or departments.
Google Docs makes collaboration on documents so much easier to control.
Google Chat allows for the instantaneous communication, be it one-on-one or one-to-many

The answers were impressive, and literally shot down almost every aspect of my idea of using Twitter as an Intranet Communication, and the fact that Twitter might actually make money out of such a service. I agree with some of it, and I hadn't been aware of the services that Yammer provides, but then again, as Tom put it so well, its more of a "try it and see situation". If it works, it works. The whole point of using Twitter and not anything else had simply been because of the fact that its catching up and people are adapting it fast. Whether the trend dies down, as Gartner's Hype Cycle usually predicts, is of course, plausible. But nevertheless, its worth a shot, if not for all companies, then for those who might actually require this kind of dynamic conversation.
For it not being able to facilitate a Two-Way Communication, that's an excellent point, and I still can't think of a loophole for that point. But in spite of that, Twitter conversations aren't uncommon though, are they?

So what about LinkedIn?
Last of all, I would like to say a big Thank You to everyone who posted their views. I truly appreciate it. LinkedIn might just be the perfect way of getting instant professional feedback, and that also from the very best, in such a manner. Perhaps allowing users to add more elements to the Questions which they post, other than just Links, might be something to think about. Make it slightly more like Facebook, but not completely. Add Link Previews, that helps a lot. There are many ways of going about it.
On 20th May @Biz talked about something to the tune of “to say we are philosophically opposed to any and all advertising is incorrect.” Subsequently, there was a bit more subtlety when he reiterated that “in the Terms, we leave the door open for advertising. We'd like to keep our options open as we've said before.” Translated, that just means: “We’re afraid we might alienate everyone by putting advertisements on Twitter right now, so we’ll just wait till we’re big like Facebook and everyone’s relying too much on us. THEN we’ll bring in the multicolored banners.” Then of course, we hear of that brilliant deal with Microsoft and Google, which still raises eyebrows considering they’re selling to competitors, but heck, it works for them.

Two Search Engines. Two deals. What’s next for them? Another monetization plan besides the uncertain advertisements mentioned above? Or something even more? Why not sell the technology to big CEO’s with bigger bucks. Make Twitter a medium of Intranet Communication. Might not be such a bad idea after all.

Let’s have a look at Wordpress now. Agreed, it’s Macro-blogging. Or for the sake of frivolity, blogging. Now Wordpress allows people to host their blogs using a subdomain. This itself sounds quite similar to what Twitter does: you create an account, you choose a name, you get your own Twitter page to micro-blog. Now Wordpress, being a Content Management System, also allows you some additional nifty features: changing themes, changing styles, adding cool widgets etc. etc. The works. More importantly however, it allows you to do this in two ways. You pay up and get more hosting space, more features, and more operating functions. Or, you download it and make an independent installation of it, whether on your server, a local host, a public website, or perhaps on your intranet. Download and deploy.

So how exactly does this concern Twitter then?
The idea is simple, and I’ve tried to paint a picture which I’m hoping is obvious to grab. Sell the technology. Sell the platform. Not just the API, that’s available for free and dead useful at that. But seeing the number of Fail-Whales we’ve encountered over the past few months, the suave managers of big conglomerates might not be too happy with the idea of trusting their entire communication channel with an independent website which has a tendency to regularly go down. It’s an impressive way of communication, and it could be a brilliant solution to Intranet communication – real time updates, researcher collaborations, project updates, dynamic communication of changing requirements etc. etc. And it could be monitored perfectly well, analyzed even better. The possibilities are limitless. But running it on a server that’s not in my control? I’d rather pay developers to create something similar. It might not be perfect, but it could definitely serve the purpose. Right?

Cashing in on this unseen opportunity is the key, and the revenue-stream automatically defined. It won’t hurt Twitter either, they already have everything. Only instead of giving it away for free, much like Wordpress does, just sell it. The price can be varied along with the bundled features: a Basic Installation, Advanced Analytics, and an Enterprise-level Communication System. It’s all there. Heck, even charge for maintenance and stay on in advisory basis.

All Twitter needs to do is open its eyes to this Easter egg. What would you say?

In attempts to create a single-sign on web, the Liberty Alliance Project was established by Sun Microsystems, to provide “a common language for authentication”, and ensure that “no one company controlled the single authentication network”. While considered a bit of a hype after its time and definitely something to be reckoned with at this point of time (Read: Facebook Connect), it still had interesting historic implications, which are, fortunately or unfortunately, now getting reflected upon the two biggest Internet giants today: Google and Facebook.

Joined by AOL, United Airlines, GM, and a charming variety of other mainstream businesses, the Liberty Alliance Project was heavily hyped and surrounded by much speculation. While Microsoft was stressing upon its ‘Passport’ Services, a similar initiative (perhaps not technically, but similar all the same), AOL began its own separate project called ‘Magic Carpet’. While they naturally garnered enough support to be reckoned with, being spun off by sufficiently well-known brands of the time, the reason which later led to their diminishing visibility was the apparent lack of need for a single authentication system, as research seemed to suggest.

Later, of course, came Google. Vastly viral and tremendously used for Search, it started picking on enough Google ID’s once it rolled out Gmail, even allowing users to sign in to the Google website with their ID’s, and steadily getting tied in with additional applications and services – iGoogle, Docs, Labs, Calendars, etc. etc. – all of which could be accessed using that one single login ID provided by the ‘Don’t be Evil’ company. The numbers continue to grow, and Gmail ID’s runs strong, with almost 146 million users in roughly 5 years.

Further down came Facebook. With roughly 300 million users, it managed to reach a number equal to the population of United States itself - all in a period of 5 years. While the numbers themselves are staggering, more important of course is how the creators have now utilized them – not just for the revenues, which is a given – but, with a powerful little feature which they rolled out last December: Facebook Connect. By clicking on a single button, you can, literally, sign in to practically any website with a Connect installation in it. Add comments, posts reviews, share it to your wall, show it off to your friends – it’s all there. A perfect way of connecting to everything, using Facebook.

The point here is simple. Google could have done precisely the same thing with much less effort - and have been much more dominant. It was already growing, and still is – heavily so. Connecting itself to practically every website had always been an easy option for it: Tie in the users to the Search results, and watch the numbers grow. Every website would want to opt in for a “Google Connect” instead. Ensuring the viral spread of Wave wouldn't have been that daunting a task perhaps. Google Checkout could have become a matter of drag-and-drop. What other advantages it might have offered later and what it didn’t at that point of time is beyond question: Google has always done things which for the most part have never quite profited it, and this is one missed opportunity that it might just regret.

Of course, they rolled out the Google Friend Connect before Facebook Connect, an initiative I think may be a little too late in making Google more 'social' (coupled with Google Profiles – I’m sufficiently sure they remain vastly ignored.) Add to that the Google Side-Wiki, which is, for now, slightly invisible, though which I’m hoping will eventually surface. But it’s still too much of a knee-jerk reaction to be too noticeable.

It’s a simple race, and I’m personally betting on Facebook winning this one. Then again, which one would YOU prefer: the familiar Facebook, or your charming pal Google?

Why do I have to have a pair of headphones for a commute or an ipod in the backpack, a thumb-drive always by my side or my phone's calendar reminding me of everything that goes on?

There has been such a massive change in the pace of our jobs, our lives, our work and our perception of time. Companies are built or broken by the day, a man gets or loses a job by one field in an html form and you're far more organized for having internet on your phone, your iPod, your netbook and every other possible place for an online calendar. What's the rush?

It's the rush to beat the heat, the same competitive streak everyone had 10 years ago too. But why is it so much worse? Because of this darned internet, technology and stupid smartphones.

As we increase our resource base, the amount of work that is possible for us to complete within a certain span of time is so immensely different. A college student must know how to play around his classes, job and activities within the 10 hour day he might have, and a worker must know what meeting is where and how his two concurrent projects are working out with his team members. There's no excuse for forgetting or not being aware. But the awareness possible today can be too much for a person. The possibilities of doing things are limitless, but time and our bodies are. There's still falling into stupors, oversleeping, falling sick and other 'mediocre' problems haunting some of us. And some of us have just risen above them.

It started with Post-Its - people loved the idea and the amazing resourcefulness of those things. Then came Microsoft Office and Outlook for all the office peeps. Things looked even nicer, meetings became easier to schedule, stuff always fell in to place, etc. etc. Productivity for the new generation became a much easier task.

Then came Google. And their Calendars and Docs and GMail. Everything became easy for EVERYONE. College kids went to town on free stuff that made them look like executives, and started picking up the pace on everything they did. Working together became easier, so did throwing a party with Facebook. Smartphones became affordable, driving the last nail into an unorganized slob's (like myself) coffin. There's no room for laggards anywhere, and I can't afford to find myself oversleeping again, or falling ill because of the rain or letting go of my phone. The dependency, the craving for a constant internet connection and connectivity is soon going to become a necessity, something they might have a class in grade school for.

Although I'll admit, I do still stick to my moleskine journals for a week, or for random thoughts to be quickly jotted down, but they'll soon become one of those things of lore and for old (and hopefully rich) people.

But I still prefer to have that odd weekend where I forget my phone and my calendars and read a book, but it'll always be on the back of my mind. No wonder the alcoholics and the stoners are coming out in huge numbers amongst the young too, anything for a temporary release, isn't it?
Should the organization jump on the bandwagon to establish, or more usually, defend, its online brand? Or should it invest in an online ‘Social’ startup which happens to be rather promising? How have such innovations evolved, and have they always been successful? Are customers attracted to them faster than the usual channels of communication?

The article in turn, intends to establish a definite pattern in such startups, in hopes that it might just be easier to recognize one in the “next big thing”.

Going Google

When Google first opened to the world, it offered something most Search engines didn’t: subtle, ad-free search – and with nothing obvious on its website to sell to users. It was inherently smart.
Pitting it off against other search engines at the time, AltaVista, Yahoo! etc, which were otherwise crawling with news and advertisements, Google in turn kept it simple. Their clean webpage gave out the obvious message that their focus was indeed to provide the best of Search capabilities, and early adopters quite naturally took it in a stride - possibly owing to its reputation within Stanford as well. Its popularity soared, and so did widespread adoption. People shifted rapidly, not only because it was the best, but because everyone else was now using it. The rest is history.
Now, of course, Google offers much more than just Search – Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Picasa, SketchUp, and the upcoming Wave. The list is endless, and the potential limitless. Whether it survives the Microsoft-Yahoo Bing, or pulls off Wave perfectly enough - that of course, is the question at hand.

‘The’ Facebook

Facebook in turn, albeit a different platform altogether, had similar beginnings. Written by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg, it started off, best-described by Wikipedia, as a “Harvard University version of Hot or Not”. While the hot-or-not concept most certainly died out, the social-networking aspect stuck.
Reprogrammed and refurnished, it garnered around itself a certain exclusivity reputation, open only to Harvard students in its initial stages. Consequently, when opened for Ivy League universities, unsurprisingly enough, it attracted students by the masses; Zuckerberg glowed. The Networks grew, expanded to other universities, added Canadian Schools, Microsoft, Apple, and even High Schools. Facebook, it seemed, had provided people with the perfect way of staying connected, with old friends, acquaintances, and everyone else, occasionally offering a peek into the on-goings of their daily lives, with photos, status updates etc. etc. The website was simple, friendly, fresh, and clean.
Fast-forwarding a few years past that, Facebook, of course, is now open to users worldwide. While the ‘exclusivity’ factor is perhaps non-existent, users now flock to it by the thousands, not only because of the same features which had attracted its early users, but more so because everyone else was now on it.

Twitterbits

Twitter, perhaps Mashable’s favorite Social platform, had a rather interesting start as well. While not concocted in the likes of a garage, or as an accidental startup, it was rather the product of a brainstorming session at Odeo. Initially a simple SMS service offering the ability to post public messages, it was devoid of the sheer laziness accompanied with writing long blog posts (Such as this one). Everyone could give nippy little updates on their life – in 140 characters or less. It was simple, easy to use, and quite, quite unique.
While its success might have been hard to predict, it is definitely a fact now, that following its initial adaptation and success at the SXSW conference, it most certainly became quite a huge hit. Currently still in its early stages, people are starting to find uses which even its makers could not have possibly comprehended – viral marketing, research, and probably even more.

Putting it all together
There are more that may be talked about – YouTube, Blogs, Wikipedia etc. - the list isn’t exhaustive. For the purpose of this article however, let’s stick to highlighting certain common characteristics in these particular cases.
They all started out simple, quite unlike their competitors. Google, with its clean homepage; Facebook, with its simple connectivity features; and Twitter, of-course, for being Twitter. More so than simplicity of course, all three offered users something which other websites didn’t: an unusual, unique characteristic. Google, with its PageRank, for offering the most relevant of results; Facebook, with its Networks feature, to connect with all the right people; and Twitter, for its short SMS-like bursts of 140 character-long messages, which were so much more easier to jot down than blog-posts. These peculiar traits in turn, made the three platforms much, much more interesting - easily attracting the early hordes of adapters towards them.
Foregoing the exception of Twitter, (still just about 2 years old,) Google and Facebook themselves have now evolved into a lot more than what they started out as. While the Search Engine does provide some incremental features, Google has also tied in more and more efficient services to it – YouTube results, Google News, Maps etc. etc. And while Facebook itself has in fact discontinued its Networks feature, it now offers a lot more than just that – Videos, Groups, Fan Pages, Events, Applications, Games, E-Commerce systems - and much, much more.

So what’s next?
What after them? Will Twitter evolve in a similar manner – incrementally, as Anil Dash likes to put it? It's already on the way to implement better Retweeting abilities, among other things. The only thing I fear is a substantial lack of clarity in exactly what it'll be offering businesses through subscription-based models.
What of Google Wave? The email-defying platform is certainly unique – too unique perhaps. While it may provide an excellent array of features for developers, first looks would alarm common users with its complexity, rather than awe them with its savviness. Perhaps if they gradually rolled out similar features within Gmail itself, now one of the biggest email platforms worldwide – then yes. But then again, all’s well in theory, and much more complex at the implementation level. Google itself knows best.

As for future startups? Will they be as simple, unique, and viral? Time will tell.

And we're headed somewhere.

There are two immediate revolutions occurring as we speak. Globalization and Virtualization. You can't deny how quickly the world is becoming one and how quickly we have a whole new world, a new dimension on the internet. Where are we at this time? What are we doing? What are YOU doing to be a part of a new way of living, survival?

What are we doing?
This isn't a blog, it's an experiment via this medium. We are individuals in two corners of the world, in two bustling cities at the forefront of both revolutions - Chicago and Singapore (occasionally encompassing Dubai, UAE and New Delhi, India) who want to see where we can go with what's been made available to us through the web, through social media, through people, through networks, through college and beyond.
It's an interesting proposition, working on something with different timezones (although in college that really never is a problem) and different backgrounds (Engineering and Business) yet striving for something similar.

What are YOU doing?
Let's face it, that's what you care for. What are you doing to capitalize on what's going on? What have you done with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Xing, MySpace in the past and what should you do? What shouldn't you do? What are you doing with your phone? Your transit, your commute? Your brand new gadget or how should you buy a shiny new thing-a-majig?
We're opinionated people, we'll tell you what we think you should do or should've done or can do. And this isn't the blog, this will be something bigger and you can be an active part of it. All in due time.

We won't come flying thick and fast, but we'll be strong and productive. Hope you enjoy the trip.

Godspeed.
