Edoardo Reja waves good-bye to Split

Well, I guess its "all roads lead to Rome." At least for Hajduk Split manager Edoardo Reja. That is former Hajduk Split manager, as Edoardo Reja confirmed today that he will leave Split and replace Davide Ballardini as Lazio manager. The 64 year old took over as Hajduk Split coach last August after having been fired by Napoli last season.

"I've been weighing it up for a long time, but eventually I gave my word to Lazio's president. Yes, I'm leaving for Rome. When they've been calling me from Italy during the past few months. I was refusing the offers, I was not even thinking about them. However, Lazio is too important a challenge. It was hard for me to reach this decision … but when the most important people from the city of Rome, the club of Lazio call you it is difficult to refuse. I've decided to take up this challenge."

Reja had been under contract with Hajduk Split until June 2011, and Hajduk are believed to receive 150,000 - 500,000 euros in damages, while Reja will be paid 1.5 million euros a year by Lazio.

Now the question is, who should replace Reja?

I have spoken to Hajduk sports director Ivica Šurjak last week over the phone. The former Hajduk Split and PSG midfielder is "satisfied with Hajduk's preparations in Spain last month" and is "looking forward to the second half of the season." Šurjak has also been in talks with Barcelona president Joan Laporta, hoping to lure Barcelona to Split for Hajduk's 100th anniversary in February. "Barcelona will vote on a new president in May, and we must wait for this before we can proceed negotiations with Barcelona," said an optimistic Ivica Šurjak. Unfortunately, I was unable to reach Ivica today for comment on Reja.

Ivica Olić and Bayern Munich continued their fine form smashing on last year's champions, Wolfsburg, 3-1 in front of 30,000 at Volkswagen Arena. Ivica started and played only the first half, assisting on Daniel van Buyten's goal in the 26th minute of play. In the 10th minute of play, Ivica broke the offsides trap, cut back a defender in the box and flopped. Yes, Ivica flopped! Referee Manuel Gräfe reached for his pocket and pulled out a yellow card for the 30 year old former Dinamo Zagreb and Hamburg striker.

Bayern have now strung together ten straight victories and have lost only once in their last 15 competitive matches. Bayern.de caught up with Ivica this week. Here is the interview.

Bayern-Wolfsburg Highlights

Danijel Pranjić appears to be in the dog house in Munich as the 28 year old Croatian international was an unused substitute for a third consecutive match on Saturday against Wolfsburg and has yet to start in 2010. Danijel has 1 goal and two assists in 12 appearances for the Bavarian Giants. Bayern play twice this upcomng week, so we should see Danijel make an appearance for Bayern.

Josip Šimunić returned from his yellow card suspension and put on a solid performance for Hoffenheim, registering a 2-1 victory over Hannover. Hoffenheim was desperate for a win after going winless so far in 2010.

Joe is turning 32 in a few weeks and still remains a valuable figure in defense for Hoffenheim. Does Joe deserve a starting spot in an aging Croatian defense, or should Croatia be looking for fresh new blood for Euro 2012?

Hamburg and Mladen Petrić were in action against Zvonimir Soldo and Cologne on Sautrday in front of 50,000 fans at Rhein Energie Stadion. Marcell Jansen opened up the scoring for Hamburg in the second minute, after Faryd Mondragon failed to clear a Petrić bullet. Mladen would then break the offsides trap in the 36th minute of play, scoring off a beautiful Jansen cross.

Mladen would give Hamburg a 3-1 lead, scoring off a penalty kick in the 51st minute of play. Faryd Mondragon went right and Mladen went power straight down the pipe. It wasn't a pretty penalty kick, however, a goal is a goal. The Hamburg defense would later fall asleep and fail to keep a two goal lead, splitting the points with Cologne with a final score of 3-3.

Cologne-Hamburg Highlights

Ivica Banović came on in the 71st minute of play for Freiburg, holding on to a 0-0 draw against Schalke and ending a four game losing streak. Freiburg has stopped the bleeding, however, has only scored once in their last six games. Banović is being watched by Croatia and don't be surprised to see him get called up by Slaven Bilić to face Belgium on March 3rd.

Ivan Rakitić started and played the full 90 for Schalke in a scoreless draw at Freiburg in front of 24,000 at Badenova Stadion on Saturday. Ivan picked up a stupid yellow card in the 87th minute of play, but has started and gone the distance in all four Schalke games of 2010. Great to see Ivan getting minutes, however, he hasn't reached the scoring sheet in 2010.

England

KRANJČAR IN FA CUP ACTION VS. LEEDS

Tottenham Hotspur once again had double duty this week as they played Leeds United on Wednesday in a FA Cup 4th Round replay at Elland Road and then Aston Villa on Saturday in Premiership action at home. Niko Kranjčar and Vedran Ćorluka got the start and played the full match against Leeds as Luka Modrić stayed on th bench as an unused sub. A Jermain Defoe hat trick was good enough for the Spurs as they won the match 3-1 and will now face off against Bolton in the Fifth Round at the Reebok on February 14th.

Kranjčar only managed one shot on goal as he patrolled the left flank during the match. This means that he is back to full strength and has recovered from the minor knock he sustained a week ago. Manager Harry Redknapp decided to use Ćorluka for the replay to ensure a victory as Ćarli was given the day off in the original 2-2 draw.

MODRIĆ FLYING HIGH AGAINST VILLA

On Saturday, Tottenham took on Aston Villa at White Heart Lane in a pivotal Premiership match. This time, Luka Modrić played the full match alongside Vedran Ćorluka while Niko Kranjčar watched from the bench. Tottenham should have won the match as they controlled the ball 55% of the game and managed 33 shots all together; five being on frame. It ended in a 0-0 draw dropping the Spurs down to fifth in the Premiership standings as Liverpool won. They have only won one match in their last five. Tottenham, it's time to win some games if you want to compete for a Champions League spot!

Modrić got in the mix late as he found himself open for a few shots on goal. Nothing developed as his chances were blocked by defenders or Villa goalie Brad Friedel. Ćorluka also had some nice crosses from the right flank.

ROVER STRIKER NIKOLA KALINIĆ

Nikola Kalinić played the full 90 minutes for the Blackburn Rovers in their away match against Stoke City on Saturday. Stoke easily took care of the Rovers in a 3-0 victory. Kalinić didn't manage one shot on goal the entire game. Still good to see him playing the entire game though. He and his teammates have cooled off since that Wigan win a few weeks ago.

EDUARDO STILL HURTING

Eduardo was substituted during the second half of Arsenal's 0-0 draw at Aston Villa. He missed the game against Manchester United and won't be available for the trip to Chelsea. "Eduardo is already ruled out," said Wenger on Thursday. -Arsenal.com

Eduardo is still out with a thigh muscle problem and missed Arsenal's second consecutive game as the Gunners lost to leaders Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday. He should be good to go next week though.

WHEN WILL KLASNIĆ SHINE AGAIN?

Ivan Klasnić was not part of Bolton's squad for a second straight week as they played out a scoreless draw with Fulham. It seems that new manager Owen Coyle doesn't have a plan for Klasnić as he recovers from an ankle injury. (Thanks to DF for the info.)

Remember that Klasnić is only on loan with Bolton until the end of this season. He for sure will not stay with Bolton, but will he remain in England or go back to Germany? Because Killer still has something left in the tank.

Italy

Struggling Livorno put up a valiant effort against Juventus with the game ending in a 1-1 draw from the Armando Picchi Stadium. Dario Knežević had a stellar game for his side with a Goal.com rating of 6/10 stating, "The Croatian defender neutralized Del Piero and Amauri upfront and did not make any glaring errors." Despite the draw, Livorno flirt with the relegation zone. They sit in 17th place of the Serie A standings going into next weekend's home contest against Bologna.

Mato Jajalo

A small crowd of 11,000 was on hand at the Artemio Franchi Montepaschi Arena to witness Sampdoria walk away with a 2-1 victory over lowly Siena. Mato Jajalo started the contest for Siena but left the game early in the 41' of the first half for reasons unknown. Siena remain at the bottom of the Serie A standings as they head into next weekend's match at Chievo Verona.

Ivan Jurić

Genoa defeated Chievo Verona 1-0 from the Comunale Luigi Ferraris with nearly 25,000 fans in attendance. Ivan Jurić started the match for his Genoa side but came out in the 60'. Realistically, will the aging Jurić be a part of the Croatian National Team come September or has he played his last match under Slaven Bilić?

Genoa move up to 8th place in the Serie A standings heading into next weekend's match at Juventus.

Igor Budan was an unused substitute in Palermo's 2-1 victory against Parma.

France

Dejan Lovren started and played the full 90 in his third consecutive match for Lyon in a 0-0 draw at Toulouse on Sunday. Dejan looks to be fitting in quite well with Les Gones, however, needs to cut back on his fouls, committing a total of ten in the last two games. Dejan is still used to the HNL style of play. Great to see him starting and going the distance the past three contests.

Vedran Runje made two nice saves in a relatively easy stroll in the park for Lens in a 2-1 home victory over Le Mans on Saturday. Vedran was on his way to a sixth clean sheet this season, when luck wasn't on his side in the 84th minute as Modibo Maíga scored off a deflection. With the win, Lens looked to have sealed their place in Ligue 1, 14 points above the relegation zone.

Henri Bedimo Nsame, arriving from Chateauroux, made his debut for Lens on Saturday and didn't fail to impress. He was responsible for setting up Lens' first goal after running up the flank and crossing in a beauty, leading to the first goal. Even though Runje has been next to amazing this season for Lens, the arrival of Bedimo should ease off a little pressure off the 33 year old Croatian international.

Belgium

Visitors Club Brugge played Zulte-Waregem to a 1-1 draw on Sunday from the Regenboog Stadion. Ivan Perišić played the entire match for his side, who continue to remain in second place of the Belgian Jupiler League as the travel to KAA Gent next weekend.

Spain

Mate Bilić

Sporting Gijon were defeated by Almeria 3-1 from the Estadio Mediterraneo with 12,000 spectators on hand. Mate Bilić started the match but was subbed out in the 58' for teammate Miguel de las Cuevas. The loss keeps Sporting Gijon in 13th place of the Spanish Primera standings heading into next weekend's home contest against Valencia.

Turkey

Hrvoje Čale

Trabzonspor defeated Manisaspor 3-0 from the H. Avni Aker Stadium in Turkish Super League action. Hrvoje Čale once again played the entire match for his side in yet another fantastic performance on defense while Drago Gabrić entered the contest in the 83' for Serkan Balci to slowly work his way back to full match fitness after picking up an injury a few weeks ago.

Čale has been earning a lot of minutes in the past few weeks for Trabzonspor and has been making a good impression on his coaching staff and teammates. With the exception of a 4-3 loss at the hands of Galatasaray, Trabzonspor have allowed two goals or less in games in which Čale was featured on defense. Will Hrvoje be ready to start on defense for Croatia come September when EURO 2012 qualification begins?

Trabzonspor remain in 6th place as they are away next weekend at Bursaspor.

EURO 2012 DRAW

The Euro 2012 draw took place on Sunday in Warsaw. Croatia was paired with Greece, Israel, Latvia, Georgia and Malta. Although this seems like a tricky group because Greece and Israel were the top seeds in their given Pots, Croatia could have easily been in a much bigger mess. Croatia narrowly missed being in the same group as Serbia and Slovenia which would have been a political catastrophe all on its own and also missed being paired up with Turkey, Belgium and Austria in Group A. Germany will battle out as top seed in this group while Italy has the misfortune of being paired with Serbia; probably the toughest group.

Greece is on the decline as most of their players are aging with no promise of young stars and Croatia has always had Israel's number. Latvia becomes a tricky fourth seed and always gives their fellow group mates trouble. Greece, Israel and Latvia are very familiar with each other as they were in the same group for World Cup 2010 qualifying. All in all, it could have been better and it could have been worse. At least we can now laugh at the Italians and Serbs as they go at each other in qualifying. Who to root for?- I hate them both so my vote is for Estonia!

With 24 hours to reflect after the draw, I have come to the conclusion that this group will definitely keep Croatia sharp. There are no gimme games and after the last qualifying campaign they should now know that no team will lay down without a fight. We struggled against Belarus at home for godsakes! There's no reason Croatia shouldn't top the group because Greece and Israel are happy with their draw and might under-value Croatia. We'll see in seven months.

EURO 2012 QUALIFYING DRAW

THE (VERY FEMININE) OFFICIAL EURO 2012 LOGO

The bitter reality of Croatia not reaching the 2010 World Cup has haunted Vatreni fans worldwide since qualification concluded- and it will only get worse from here on out. With the world's largest sporting spectacle less than 130 days away, 32 teams prepare their travel arrangements for South Africa while Team Croatia gets first pick at where they want to vacation this summer.

The first step in this painful healing process begins this Sunday, February 7th at noon (CET) 6AM (ET) in Warsaw, Poland. The draw for Euro 2012 groups will be established and Croatia look to be in good shape as they grabbed a Pot 1 allocation ensuring them no battles with Europe's elite- not even England. The only team I fear out of Pot 2 is Serbia. Not only is Serbia playing well at the moment, but it would be an obvious mental, emotional and media war if they were paired with Croatia.

So let the discussion between possible pairings begin! For those of you that have voted in our most recent poll, time to justify your pick.

NEW EURO 2012 LAYOUT:

There will be total of nine groups. Six of these groups will have six teams drawn into them (one each from pots 1 to 6 above); the remaining three groups will consist of five teams (one each from pots 1 to 5 above). At the conclusion of qualifying, the team at the top of each group will qualify automatically. The second-placed team with the most points from games versus the first-, third- fourth- and fifth-placed teams will qualify also. The remaining eight second-placed teams will contest two-legged playoffs for the right to join them.

England

MODRIĆ (TINY FELLOW IN THE MIDDLE) CELEBRATES WITH TEAMMATES AFTER CLINCHING A WIN OVER FULHAM

Tottenham hosted Fulham in midweek Premiership action this past Tuesday and managed a 2-0 win in the process. Both Luka Modrić and Vedran Ćorluka started and played the full 90 minutes for the Spurs in the win. Niko Kranjčar was not part of the squad as he received a minor knock from the previous week while in training. Nothing to worry about though.

Modrić only managed one shot on goal but seems to be blending well with the Tottenham offense since his return from injury. Vedran Ćorluka helped Tottenham with the clean sheet as Fulham only managed to get three shots on goal.

MODRIĆ IN ACTION AGAINST BIRMINGHAM

Tottenham had double duty this week as they also had a match against Birmingham on Saturday. Luka Modrić and Vedran Ćorluka once again played the entire match while Niko Kranjčar remained on the bench as an unused sub. Tottenham were three minutes away from posting a perfect week with six points in two games, but Ćorluka made a crucial error in the 91st minute letting Liam Ridgewell get to the back post unguarded for the game-tying goal. In the video below you can clearly see that Ćorluka forgot about his man.

Modrić only managed one shot off target during the match but his all-in-all health and speed has been excellent. With the draw, Tottenham still sit in the fourth and final Champions League spot, but have three other teams that want to join the party: Liverpool, Manchester City and Aston Villa.

NIKOLA KALINIĆ

Nikola Kalinić scored his first Premiership goal on Wednesday night and gave his Blackburn Rover side the late win with it. Kalinić returned to action for the Rovers on Saturday and started against West Ham United. Kale only played 71 minutes and did not get any shots off in the scoreless draw. He should do well against Stoke City next week.

KILLER NOT GETTING ANY LOVE FROM NEW BOSS

Ivan Klasnić began his week on Tuesday with a start against Burnley at the Reebok Stadium. His Bolton Wanderers came away with a 1-0 win as Klasnić had very little to contribute on the day. Killer only managed to play 52 minutes and couldn't manage one shot with his time on the pitch.

On Saturday, Klasnić was kept completely off Bolton's squad as the team travelled to Anfield to take on Liverpool. Bolton lost the match 2-0 and still remain on the cusp of relegation. How did Klasnić go from hero to zero and off the squad alltogether in such short time? One CSR follower chimed in on the subject.

After all the Klasnić hysteria lately, has nobody noticed that Owen Coyle has actually dropped him and changed the formation which does not include Klasnić for some games? They are going one up top with Lee in behind. I don't expect Klasnić to be with Bolton at the end of the season. He'll play out the rest of season till summer- Bolton will probably stay up and then it'd be nice to see Klasnić back in Germany next year with someone like Hoffenheim. I don't believe Klasnić is really a Coyle player. I think he'd like someone with higher energy levels. That's how I'm reading it. But he'll be back in team for the home games. -DF

EDUARDO NEEDS TO STRETCH WELL IF HE WANTS TO PLAY CHELSEA NEXT WEEK

Eduardo was substituted during the second half of Arsenal's 0-0 draw at Aston Villa earlier in the week. He will miss Sunday's game against Manchester United. "Eduardo has a small, small, small hamstring [problem]," said Arsène Wenger on Thursday. "He will be out for one week. He will not make Man United but he might make Chelsea next week." -Arsenal.com

Arsenal lost to Manchester United 3-1 on Sunday which puts them in third place behind United and Chelsea for the time being.

Germany

Ivica Olić started and played 58 minutes for Bayern Munich in a 3-0 victory over Mainz in front of 69,000 at Allianz Arena in Munich. Ivica played well, ran around all game, pressuring the Mainz keeper on numerous occasions, but failed to convert on any of his five attempts at goal. The Bavarian Giants enjoyed 72% of possession, dominating from start to finish. With the win, Bayern keep themselves on pace with Bayer Leverkusen, trailing the Bundesliga leaders by two points.

Danijel Pranjić was left on the bench back to back weeks for Bayern Munich. Does anyone know what is going on with Danijel?

Josip Šimunić sat out Saturday's Schalke match after picking up his fifth yellow card last weekend. His presence was clearly felt as Hoffenheim lost their fourth straight match, falling 2-0 at Schalke.

Hamburg and Mladen Petrić failed to get a victory to stay in the hunt for the Bundesliga title, drawing 1-1 at home to Wolfsburg on Sautrday. Mladen had Hamburg's first chance from a free-kick which he curled just wide from 25 yards out. HSV found themselves playing catch-up after 34 minutes when Dzeko curled in a shot into the bottom left corner. It took a Trochowski free-kick in the 90th minute to rescue a well deserved point for Hamburg. Mladen played the full 90 minutes, however, only managed to have one attempt on goal, even though Hamburg dominated 70% of possession.

Ivica Banović didn't make the trip to Leverkusen on Sunday to face first place Bayer at BayArena. Bayer Leverkusen scored three goals in four minutes late in the first half to register a convincing 3-1 victory in front of 26,000 supporters. Freiburg lost their fourth straight match and are winless in their last six games. With the loss, Freiburg find themselves only one point ahead of Hannover 96 in the relegation zone.

Ivan Rakitić started and played the full 90 for Schalke on Saturday in a 2-0 home victory over a Šimunić-less Hoffenheim. It was Schalke's fifth home win in a row keeping the pressure on Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen in the chase for the Bundesliga crown.

Livorno put up a valiant effort today as they took on Italian giants AC Milan, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw. Dario Knežević anchored the Livorno defense by playing the entire match for his side with a raucous 34,998 on hand at the San Siro. The draw keeps Livorno out of the relegation zone for this weekend, but the challenge won't get any easier as they host Juventus next weekend.

Ivan Jurić

Genoa and Napoli fought to a 0-0 draw from the Stadio San Paolo with 16,000 fans in attendance. Ivan Jurić entered the contest in the 74' for teammate Giandomenico Mesto but failed to provide an offensive spark to break the goalless draw.

If Genoa want to play in a UEFA club competition next season, they need to keep their foot on the accelerator as they currently are on the outside looking in at 8th place of the Serie A standings. Next weekend Genoa host Chievo Verona.

Mato Jajalo started for Siena and played until being subbed out in the 90' in a 2-1 loss at AS Roma from the Stadio Olimpico. Jajalo also received a yellow card in the 63'. Tough times continue for Siena, as this most recent loss keeps them at the very bottom of the Serie A standings with relegation starting to appear more and more certain with each weekend disappointment. The struggle continues, as Siena host an upstart Sampdoria squad next weekend.

France

Dejan Lovren got his second consecutive start for Lyon on Sunday in front of 36,000 at Municipal De Gerland, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory over PSG. Dejan played the full 90 and almost scoring off a corner in the 77th minute, which led to a Bafetimbi Gomis equalizing goal. Lovren still looked a little shaky in defense, committing six fouls.

With the win, Lyon move up to fourth spot in Ligue 1, only a point from a champions league spot. Hopefully, Lyon can keep up this pace and reach Europe next season. We need some more Croatians playing champions league ball.

Vedran Runje and Lens fell to Lille on Saturday 1-0, in front of only 16,458 at Lille Metropole. Vedran played the full 90 and made a few nice saves down the stretch to save Lens from getting embarrassed in Villeneuve d'Ascq. Vedran has been pretty solid for a terrible Lens team this season in Ligue 1. Lens have failed to score more than one goal in 8 out of their last 9 matches, and would be in the relegation zone if it wasn't for the brilliance of Vedran Runje.

Ivan Perišić, who is still recovering from a recent minor back injury, put Club Brugge ahead in the 14' of play. Sporting Gijon were defeated by defending Champions League and World Club Cup champions Barcelona 1-0, but don't let the score fool you. Barcelona dominated this entire contest from start to finish. The 20,000 fans on hand at the Estadio Municipal El Molinon saw their Sporting side have ball possession for a mere 26% of the match. If there is one good thing to come out of this contest, it is that Mate Bilić played the entire match against the greatest playing squad in the world.

After an unimpressive showing in group stage, the Croatian handball team managed to squeak into the final on Sunday beat Poland 24-21 in the semifinals on Saturday of the European championship for a rematch with France in the final. France was very convincing against Iceland in the other semifinal, winning their game with a result of 36:28.

Croatia didn't play well from the very start of the game and was forced to chase the result the whole first halftime. Poland constantly had a two to three goals lead throughout the first half and it didn’t look good for the Kauboji. However, it was a tale of two halves, as Croatia turned the game around in the second half with four goals in a row from Domagoj Duvnjak. Without a doubt, the player of the match was keeper Mirko Alilović who saved some important shots down the stretch of the game.

In the finals, Croatia will take on France, looking to avenge last years 24-19 defeat in the world championships final in Zagreb on February 1st. Croatia will also look to win their first European championship on Sunday after losing the 2008 final to Denmark. France finished third that year and won the previous tournament in 2006 in Switzerland. The game will take place on Sunday at 5:30pm local Austrian time. We are looking into a live feed. KALINIĆ FINALLY ON THE BOARD

With hit post after hit post haunting him recently like he was bitten by the 'bad luck' bug, 22 year-old former Hajduk Split star Nikola Kalinić has finally lifted the weight of the world off his shoulders by scoring his first goal in the English Premiership. Kalinić started for the Blackburn Rovers Wednesday night against Wigan Athletic continuing with his usual ways- hitting the post in the fifth minute with a right footed shot.

With the match tied up at 1-1 in the 76th minute, Kalinić finally broke his bad luck streak with a game-winning header off a corner kick. Kalinić has scored Carling Cup and FA Cup goals this season, but he now has a Premiership goal to his name. We can only pray that he repeats good performances like today's throughout the rest of the season and his English career.

So, has Kalinić finally broke out of his slump or was it just a fluke goal? Prva Generacija, what do you think?

NIKOLA KALINIĆ

Nikola Kalinić started the week off in England with a bang on Wednesday as his Blackburn Rovers took on Aston Villa in the second leg of their Carling Cup semifinal match. Things were looking good for the Rovers as Kalinić scored two goals inside of 26 minutes to put Blackburn up 2-0 early. Kalinić had to climb the ladder to score his first goal as he headed the ball down and off a Villa defender's back before crossing the line. Moments later, Kale scored an easy Ivica Olić 'right place at the right time' tap in goal as backup Aston Villa goalie Brad Guzan could only get a finger on the first shot.

The effort was not enough as Aston Villa poured on goals after Blackburn player C.S. Veijeany received a red card in the 39th minute. Aston Villa won the match 6-4 and will face the winner of the Manchester United/Manchester City tie in the Carling Cup final at Wembley.

Contrary to many beliefs on CSR that Kalinić is only scoring goals in meaningless Carling Cup or FA Cup matches, I'd (Ante Kvartuč) have to disagree using this match as a prime example. Since Blackburn has already been ousted out of the FA Cup for this season, they only have two things on their agenda for the next five months: avoid relegation and win the Carling Cup. Blackburn are sitting comfortably in middle position of the Premiership table with only a total collapse causing them any relegation zone worries. They have nothing to play for as a European spot is too far in front of them. Therefore, as long as they don't start flirting with relegation, the Carling Cup is all they had. Kalinić stepped up in their second leg match and scored two quick goals. What more can you ask for? Aston Villa played their big boys and Kalinić still got two in on them. We just have to wait until he reproduces these performances in Premiership matches.

KALINIĆ EARNS THE DOUBLE

KRANJČAR GETTING CLIPPED BY CARRAGHER

Tottenham Hotspur were also in action on Wednesday as they travelled to Anfield to take on Liverpool in a make-up Premiership match from last week due to the heavy snow. Luka Modrić, Niko Kranjčar and Vedran Ćorluka all started for the Spurs in this pivotal match that could shake up the fourth and last Champions League spot that England receives. It looked as if Tottenham didn't even want to suit up on the day as they went down easily to Liverpool 2-0. It was a very boring game after Dirk Kuyt opened up the scoring inside of 10 minutes with a strike from the top of the box. Tottenham only had three shots on goal for the day; one being a Luka Modrić strike on the run which he should have put away.

Vedran Ćorluka was surprisingly subbed out in the 61st minute for another defender. It seemed to be a tactical move as there are no injury reports on Ćorluka, but he was also given the day off on Saturday. After an average performance from Niko Kranjčar, he was also subbed out in the 65th for some much needed firepower from striker Robbie Keane. The Spurs never got the goal they were looking for and Kuyt added an injury time penalty kick to earn a double on the day. Spurs still sit in fourth place, but Manchester City and Liverpool are breathing down their necks.

CROATIANS CELEBRATING WITH CROUCH

On Saturday, Tottenham took on Leeds United at White Heart Lane in fourth round FA Cup action. Luka Modrić and Niko Kranjčar started for the Spurs while Vedran Ćorluka got the day off. Spurs dominated the game controlling ball possession for 57% of the match while outshooting Leeds on goal 15-4; with Kranjčar contributing four of those shots. Spurs missed a penalty kick in the 9' but scored right before halftime with a goal from Peter Crouch. Leeds quickly equalized in the 52' of play but Roman Pavlyuchenko looked to have locked things up with a goal in the 75th. With tons and tons of injury time to play, Leeds got what they were looking for and converted a 96th minute penalty kick to end the game at 2-2. A replay must now be played.

Kranjčar played well with plenty of shots before finally being subbed out in the 71'. Luka Modrić once again played the full 90 minutes and looks to be at full strength. Here's what Luka had to say about the game afterwords:

Luka Modric felt we should have wrapped up the win against Leeds long before Jermaine Beckford's last-gasp leveller in Saturday's FA Cup tie at the Lane.

We dominated the early stages and Leeds had goalkeeper Casper Ankergren to thank for keeping them in the tie.

However, we took the lead just before half-time through Peter Crouch and following Beckford's first equaliser, led again when Roman Pavlyuchenko finished off a fine move for 2-1 in the 75th minute.

Leeds kept going though and found a second equaliser in the fifth minute of added time when Michael Dawson was judged to have fouled Beckford and the striker slotted home from the spot.

We now go to Elland Road for the replay scheduled for Tuesday, February 2 - subject to change pending television coverage - with the winners travelling to Bolton in the fifth round on February 13/14.

"We're all disappointed," said Luka. "We had the game in our hands but Leeds managed to score in the last minute.

"We all knew that Leeds are a good team and it was going to be tough, they beat Manchester United at Old Trafford, after all, but we deserved the win.

"We didn't take our chances and in the end we conceded a bit of an unlucky goal. I'm not sure if it was a penalty or not, but it was given and we need to quickly move on because we have another big game against Fulham on Tuesday."

Luka said he was delighted to see Roman get on the scoresheet - he was first on the scene to congratulate him. "Yes, I was pleased for him. Pav's a great player and a great lad and it was an excellent goal. It was a good moment for him."

EDUARDO AGAINST BOLTON

Eduardo started on Wednesday for Arsenal in a Premiership clash against Ivan Klasnić and Bolton. The Gunners took on an early 2-0 deficit as Bolton quickly jumped on them. Eduardo had a few mediocre shots on goal including a free kick but was no threat to score. He has been very active in the Arsenal offense utilizing his view of the field and cheeky passing ability to set up teammates. Arsenal ultimately came back to win the game 4-2 under controversy as they scored the go-ahead goal as a Bolton player lied injured on the pitch. Eduardo's play as of late has been fantastic and his health looks to be 100%. Klasnić came on late in the match and only had two touches on the ball. Even 'Killer' needs some rest.

On Sunday, Arsenal travelled to Stoke City to take on the Potters in a FA Cup match. Eduardo came on in the 67th minute with the game tied at 1-1. Arsene Wenger fielded a young team as he seemed to not care for a result in this match. Eduardo couldn't manage a shot on goal with his time on the field but witnessed two more goals from Stoke as they won 3-1. This will give Arsenal plenty of rest the next four months as they battle for Champions League and Premiership titles already falling out of the Carling and FA Cups.

Ivan Klasnić started Bolton's FA Cup Match against Sheffield United on Saturday at the Reebok. He played 76 minutes and managed three shots in Bolton's 2-0 win. Klasnić is getting some rest as his club has a quick turnaround to makeup games having to play again Tuesday against Burnley. Prediction: Killer scores!

Germany

Ivica Olić and Bayern Munich continue to fire on all cylinders posting a 3-2 victory over Werder Bremen on Saturday in front of 39,100 at Weserstadion. Ivica had another great performance for the Bavarian giants, scoring a 'typical Ivica Olić tap-in goal' in the 35th minute. Olić has now scored six out of the last eight matches for Bayern raising his total to 7 goals this season.

Josip Šimunić and the Hoffenheim defense took a day off Sunday, suffering a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen. Hoffenheim are now winless in their last 6 and appear to be completely out of contention for a place in Europe.

Palermo climbed to 5th place in the Italian Serie A standings after embarrassing Fiorentina in a 3-0 victory from the Renzo Barbera Stadium with 12,000 fans in attendance. Igor Budan entered the contest in the 53' for Abel Hernandez and sure enough scored just five minutes later with an acrobatic effort on target. Palermo are away at Bari next weekend.

Despite having ball possession for only 39% of the contest, Genoa defeated Atalanta 2-0 from the Comunale Luigi Ferraris with just under 26,000 in attendance. Ivan Jurić entered the already-decided contest in the 70' for teammate Omar Milanetto. The victory moves Genoa into 8th place in the Serie A standings as they head into next weekends contest at Napoli.

Mato Jajalo

Siena and Cagliari battled to a 1-1 draw from the Artemio Franchi Montepaschi Arena with 10,000 in attendance. Mato Jajalo started the contest for his team and was subbed out in the 87' for teammate Marcelo Larrondo. The draw keeps Siena in dead-last of the Serie A standings as they are away next weekend at AS Roma.

Vedran Runje and Lens were in action on Wednesday at home to Montpellier, looking for their first victory of 2010. Vedran started and played the full 90 minutes in snowy weather falling 1-0 on a 86th minute Víctor Hugo Montaño goal. Runje had no chance on this low blast to the corner and overall played a great match, making key saves throughout the match.

Lens dropped to 15th in Ligue 1, however still safe from the relegation zone. Runje was not featured in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Compiegne in Coupe de France.

Lens Montpellier

Dejan Lovren made his Lyon debut today against Monaco at Stade Louis II in Coupe de France round of 32. Dejan played the full 90 minutes and received a yellow card in the 29th minute of play. No word on his overall performance. Lovren did look at fault in the above picture, giving up a goal to Chu-Young Park in the 78th minute.

Sporting Gijon suffered consecutive defeats on Sunday, going down 1-0 at home to Racing Santander. Croatian international, Mate Bilić came on in the 71st minute of play for for Roberto Canella and didn't have enough time to get anything going, managing only one shot attempt. Sporting Gijon drop to tenth place after losing three of their last five contests and face powerhouse Barcelona next Saturday at El Molinon.

Belgium

This past week I met up with a highly regarded soccer talent who is well known amongst the Croatian community of the tri-state area. He is currently proving his worth on the United States Division 1 college soccer scene with Quinnipiac University, but he is also looking to make a name for himself abroad. Marijan Jurac, a native of Greenwich, Connecticut, born to Croatian parents with Dalmatian roots, was courteous enough to sit down with me and discuss the many dimensions of his playing career: from his past accomplishments, to what he is currently up to, as well as what he has in store for the future.

Superior athleticism, a tireless work ethic, superb passing and dribbling skills as well as excellent vision and ability to read the game are what make Marijan stand out from the other 21 players on the field. He has all the tools necessary to make it big, and with time he will further develop and reach his full potential. Currently, he is in the midst of his off-season training and conditioning program in preparation for upcoming tryout opportunities in Croatia as well as his sophomore season at Quinnipiac.

Astounding dribbling skills and a tireless work ethic

Marijan joins a growing list of names of North-American born Croatians that includes Petar Hazdovac, and Stefan Škrinjarić, who are all chasing the dream to not only play professionally in Croatia, but to one day suit up for the Vatreni. Most of you regulars here on Croatian Soccer Report know that we are trying to be more than just a place for great soccer minds to voice their opinions on Croatian soccer. Ivica, Ante and I are trying to 'unite Croatians around the world' through culture(sports,music, and art). We are speaking with various Croatian singers, musicians and artists in Croatia, hoping to land them a North American gig in the near future.

Croatian Soccer Report reached an agreement with the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association for a "Croatian Heritage Night" on January 11, 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona and March 17, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. "Croatian Heritage Night" was designed to support the only Croatian born basketball player in the NBA, Roko Leni Ukić and Australian born Croatian Andrew Bogut.

Unfortunately, Ukić wasn't getting any playing time in Milwaukee and asked the Bucks to release him to pursue more playing time with a team in Europe. On January 5th, Roko was a free man and a week later signed a six month deal with Fenerbahçe of Turkey. This leaves the NBA without a Croatian born basketball player for the first time in 20 years.

We had to cancel our trip to Phoenix, but we decided to continue with the Bucks-Clippers game in March only tweaking it a little bit. We are turning "Croatian Heritage Night" into "Hajduk Night @ Staples Center." Andrew Bogut is a Dinamo Zagreb supporter and from what I heard has a Dinamo tattoo on his back. Since most of the Croats on the west coast are from Dalmatia, we will show up in great numbers to give Andrew a "Hajduk welcome." We have been talking to Andrew and he is following us on Twitter. Hopefully, we can set up an interview with him before and after the game.

Croatian newspapers, Sportske Novosti and 24sata both love the idea and wanted to run a story about our event. Croatian television(HRT) was interested as well and was willing to send a reporter to Los Angeles and cover the story. However, now with Ukić out of the picture, the Croatian media are not interested as well as some of our previously confirmed guests. Hopefully, this new theme will spark some interest.

EDUARDO CELEBRATING WITH TEAMMATES

Eduardo started for Arsenal and played 84 minutes in their 2-0 win over Ivan Klasnić and his Bolton Wanderers at Reebok Stadium. Eduardo was all over the place on Sunday afternoon as he made numerous scoring chances available for the Gunners while assisting on both goals.

Eduardo played a very cheeky 1-2 ball off his heel for Cesc Febregas in the first half for the opening goal while lobbing in a ball to Fran Merida late in the second half to seal the match. All in all it was a fantastic display from Eduardo in what seems to be a promising year in the Premiership for him.

ARSENAL-BOLTON 1ST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

Ivan Klasnić was once again solid for the Bolton Wanderers in their game against Arsenal. Although he didn't score an official goal, his effort said enough. In the 2' of play, Klasnić smashed a ball into the lower corner of the net but was flagged a foot offside before the strike. He also had some roundhouse heroic attempts in the first half which should be commended before being subbed out in the 79th minute. Klasnić is seeing more time in the Premiership and is handling it well.

LUKA MODRIĆ IN ACTION VS. HULL CITY

Luka Modrić, Niko Kranjčar and Vedran Ćorluka all started for the Tottenham Hotspur and played the entire match respectively for the first time ever in the Premiership togehter. However, it wasn't enough as the Spurs could not break the Hull City defense in a match that ended in a scoreless draw. Captain Robbie Keane had the best shot to put Tottenham on the board but couldn't manage to find the back of the net. Modrić also had some key shots on goal but Hull goalie Boaz Myhill was absolutely on fire blocking everything that came his way.

Hull City ended the day with zero shots on goal while Tottenham managed to put 11 shots on frame. Although the efforts from the Spurs and their Croatians were not enough for a win on the day, Tottenham now sits in fourth place in the Premiership standings and will remain fighting for a Champions League spot as the season progresses.

NIKOLA KALINIĆ AGAINST FULHAM

Nikola Kalinić played the entire 90 minutes in the Blackburn Rovers' 2-0 win over Fulham FC on Sunday afternoon at Ewood Park. Kalinić once again could not find the back of the net in a full days work for the Rovers. Could he get shipped out to another team come this summer?

FC Bayern Munich moved to the top of the table in the Bundesliga for just a day after posting a 2-0 victory over 1899 Hoffenheim in front of a sold out crowd of 69,000 at Allianz Arena on Friday. Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen both registered victories over the weekend to pip Bayern for the top spot, with only one point separating the three teams. Bayern have now won five straight and are unbeaten in their last 11 Bundesliga matches.

Ivica Olić started and played 63 minutes before being subbed out for Miroslav Klose. Ivica looked to have pulled a hamstring, however, no word on the injury.

Danijel Pranjić came on in the 77th minute for Thomas Müller after starting the previous two matches for Bayern Munich. Danijel looks to have settled in quite nicely with the Bavarian Giants after hearing it from the fans a few months back.

Josip Šimunić started and played the full 90 minutes for Hoffenheim in a 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich. Joe was at fault of the first goal after heading back a short cross from Schweinsteiger to the far post setting up Demichelis for the smash. In the 81st minute of play, Joe recieved his fourth yellow card of the season. Hoffenheim is now winless in 5 matches and have slipped down to eighth in the Bundesliga standings.

Mladen Petrić started and played the full 90 for Hamburg, registering his for Bundesliga goal in almost four months as Hamburg went on to beat Freiburg 2-0. Mladen scored from 10 yards out after Torun sent a pass into the middle of the area where Cha Du-ri misplayed the ball leaving Petrić all alone to finish.

Hamburg have won their last three Bundesliga games and are unbeaten in their last five games. Even a tap in goal is a great confidence boost for the 29 year old Croatian international.

Schalke earned a narrow 1-0 win over Nurnberg at the Veltins Arena on Sunday as Croatian international Ivan Rakitić got the start. Ivan played the full 90 and came close to scoring in the ninth minute after Edu chested a ball down to him at the edge of the penalty area and he drove his shot wide of the post. Hopefully, Ivan will continue to get playing time for Schalke or is transfered before the winter transfer window comes to a close at midnight on January 31st.

Genoa was handed a 3-0 defeat at the hands of hosts Roma on Sunday from the Stadio Olimpico with just under 32,000 fans in attendance. Ivan Jurić played the entire contest for his side, who currently sit in 12th place of the Serie A standings and host Bari this Wednesday.

A hat-trick from Ronaldinho gave AC Milan a 4-0 win at home over 10-man Siena on Sunday afternoon with 36,000 in attendance. Mato Jajalo started and was sacrificed for the backup keeper Gianluca Pegolo after Curci received a straight red in the 11th minute of play. With a lack of man-power, the match quickly turned into a one-sided affair, with Siena maintaining ball possession for only 35% of the time. With the loss, Siena remain at the bottom of the Serie A standings heading into next Sundays match at home against Cagliari.

Dejan Lovren is officially Lyonnais! The deal is supposedly worth 8€ Million and up to 9,5€ million with performance bonuses; the contract is said to be for 4 1/2 years. Dejan is following a personalized preparation regime, and wasn't available in Lyon's 2-0 victory at Nancy on Saturday. No word as to when he’ll be ready for first team action.

Slaven Bilić had an interview with RMC(in French), giving his views of Lovren’s move to Lyon. The following is a translation of that chat:

RMC: What do you think of the recent arrival of Dejan Lovren at Lyon, a player who you’ve recently called-up to the national team?

Bilić: Dejan is a young player. I called him up to the NT last august. Even the people in Croatia were surprised by his selection. It’s his second season at the highest level. He was still playing with the youth squads in Croatia. But this season, he has progressed enormously. He has really stood out in defense at his club Dinamo Zagreb. He’s a great talent.

RMC: What are his principle qualities?

Bilić: He’s very fast. He has great physical capabilities. He also has a good aerial game due to his height(1,88m). What I mean to say is that he should develop along the lines of Corluka, Kovac or even Tudor more so than anyone else on the NT or the clubs. He has alot of class. He’s not a widely know player, but I think that Lyon has made a good move. Even if he did cost alot of money, he’s a good choice for Lyon for now, but above all, for the future.

RMC: Lovren, is he better in central defense or at fullback?

Bilić: He can play both postitions effectively. He made his debut with us on the NT at fullback, but his natural position is central defense. It is there where he is most effective, in my opinion.

RMC: A lot of European clubs wanted him, but Lovren finally opted for Lyon. Do you think this is a good choice for him?

Bilić: It’s a superb choice for him. Lyon is one of the best European clubs. Lyon is well known in Croatia because they regularly play in the Champions League. It’s a team that always plays good football. But the best thing for Lovren is that Lyon has a policy of playing talented youngsters. They have purchased many young players and they have become better due to interaction with more experienced players like Juninho and Cris. Players like Essien and Abidal come to mind, among others. For a young player, Lyon is one of the best clubs to sign with.

RMC: Lovren and Cris, are they compatible?

Bilić: For me, yes. I know there is alot of competition, but if Lovren gets a chance, he has everything he needs to play alongside Cris. Due to his experience, his talent and his leadership, Cris will be very important to Lovren. The two players should complement each other and mutually benefit from each other’s presence. In football, one never knows what can happen. But I know Lovren very well. I’ve followed him for a long time. For me, he has the qualties to win his place at Lyon very quickly.

Vedran Runje and Lens were in action twice this week looking for their first victory of 2010. On Wednesday, Lens came up short against Lorient 2-1 in a round of 16 Coupe de la Ligue clash. Lorient advances to take on Dejan Lovren and Lyon on January 26th. On Saturday, Lens managed to come back a goal down in the second half to draw 1-1 with Rennes. Vedran played the full 90 in both matches and made three huge saves against Rennes.

Sporting Gijon was defeated 3-2 by hosts Atletico Madrid from the Vicente Calderon Stadium in front of a crowd of 45,000. Mate Bilić started the match and was subbed out in the 65' for David Barral. Bilić was unable to bring his team level with their opponents and received a yellow card in the 45' of play. With the loss, Sporting Gijon sit in 9th place of the Spanish Primera Division as they head into next weekend's contest at home against Racing Santander.

KALINIĆ CAN'T BUY A GOAL

Nikola Kalinić's latest adventure in England put him exactly where we last left the young Croatian striker- close, but no cigar. Kalinić played the full 90 minutes in Blackburn's first leg Carling Cup semifinal match against Aston Villa. After a quiet first half, Kalinić turned on the jets for a beautiful header that hit the post and moments later a nice one-timed shot to the lower right side which also hit the woodwork. It's been the theme of Nikola's time in England thus far.

Aston Villa ultimately won the match 1-0 with the return leg set at Villa Park for January 20th. Kale has constantly been inches away from great finishes in a Rover shirt. Is it mental or is it more? Regardless, he is showing great promise in England thus far and although he is not lighting up the scoreboard, I believe Kalinić is farther along than anyone would have originally thought five months ago when he signed with Blackburn.

It is now official- Dejan Lovren is the newest member of the Olympique Lyon family. After successfully completing a full 'head to toe' physical Wednesday morning in France, the 20 year old signed on the dotted line making him Lyon property for the next four and a half years. After initial reports claimed that the transfer would be for €8 million, Sportske Novosti reported that Dinamo Zagreb will collect €10 million for Lovren. This was incorrect as the transfer went through for €8 million, however, Dinamo could make another €1.5 million on bonuses through Lovren should he perform well.

LOVREN WAS ALL BUSINESS

The young Croatian defender should be ready to play for Lyon by next weekend. I couldn't imagine seeing him rushed into the lineup days after being signed. Congratulations to Lovren on his first major career move! CSR wishes you the best as we look forward to seeing you in 'Croatians Around Europe.'

As we wait for Dejan Lovren to officially sign for Lyon, I stumbled upon an interesting article from "Sportske Novosti" today. SN writer Milan Stjelja is comparing Lovren to the most likely replacement at Dinamo, Domagoj Vida. The author is arguing that Dejan is worth so much more in the transfer market, however, is only slightly better that Domagoj. My question to you is:

EDUARDO (right) WATCHES ON AS CHAOS ENSUES IN FRONT OF THE EVERTON GOAL

Eduardo started for Arsenal on a snowy day in north London as the Gunners took on Everton Saturday afternoon. After conceding a goal early in the match off a corner kick, Arsenal equalized in the 28th minute as Eduardo remained cool and collected in the box dishing the ball off to Denilson. The shot was deflected into the Everton net with Eduardo receiving the assist on the play.

Eduardo was also caught up in some drama as he came in cleats up on Everton goalie Tim Howard late in the match. Moments later he was subbed out in the 75'. Everton scored the go-ahead goal in the 81st only to have the game end in a 2-2 draw as Tomas Rosicky equalized with another deflected shot in injury time.

KUNG FU DUDU

Massive snowstorms have dumped loads of snow across all of England over the past week. Due to safety precautions concerning traveling supporters, seven Premiership matches were postponed on the weekend including Tottenham's much anticipated duel with Liverpool at Anfield and Bolton's clash with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Nikola Kalinić played the entire second half in a 4-1 Blackburn Rovers loss to Manchester City on Monday. Kalinić didn't look all that impressive as he lost possession a few times and could not maneuver the ball through the box. He never got a clear look on goal and appears to be playing for rebounds. Kalinić however looks to be a monster in the air as he's winning the majority of the 50-50 headers he encounters.

Mate Bilić returned for Sporting Gijon after sitting out just over a month, coming on in the 76th minute of play in a 1-0 victory over Getafe. Mate managed one shot on goal and looks to be slowly returning to form. With the win, Sporting Gijon pips Villareal for 9th place and is only 6 points back of a Liga Europa spot.

Ivan Jurić returned from winter break healthy and ready to go as he started and played the entire match in Genoa's 5-2 loss to AC Milan on Wednesday. Genoa took an early 1-0 lead at the San Siro only to have Milan put five goals past Jurić and friends. However, Genoa got back on track Sunday with an easy 2-0 home win against Catania. Jurić once again played the entire match without incident. Genoa play Catania again this Wednesday in Coppa Italia play.

Mato Jajalo came on at halftime for Siena on Wednesday, getting stomped on 5-1 at home to Fiorentina. Mato had four shots but failed to make anything happen in the loss. Siena were at Inter on Saturday hoping to rebound from the humiliating loss to Fiorentina. Mato started and played the full 90, as Siena put on a better performance in a 4-3 loss to the league leaders and defending champions. Siena were up twice in this game and 3-2 late in the game only to give up two goals in the final two minutes of play to suffer their third straight loss and remain in the relegation zone.

Dario Knežević

Dario Knežević came on in the 19th minute for Livorno for the injured Leonardo Miglionico on Wednesday in a 4-1 defeat to Lazio in front of only 15,000 at Stadio Olympico. Dario redeemed himself on Sunday, starting and playing the full 90 in a 2-1 home victory over Parma in front of 8,000 spectators at the Armando Picchi. I wouldn't be surprised if Dario gets a call up by Croatia in March for a friendly at Belgium.

Igor Budan came on in the 56th minute of play for Palermo in a 1-1 draw at Sampdoria on Wednesday and started and played the first half in a 1-0 win at home to Atalanta. Igor had a couple of shots at goal, however, doesn't seem to be comfortable in a Palermo shirt. The 29 year old former Croatian international is still far, far away from representing Croatia again.

France

Vedran Runje and Lens will have more time to work on their stretching, yoga, and pilates as their Coupe de France match at Compiègne has been postponed because of snow. Lens will open up 2010 with a Coupe de la ligue game at home to Lorient on Wednesday.

DEJAN LOVREN IS TRADING IN HIS DINAMO JERSEY

It has been reported throughout Europe that Dinamo Zagreb's 20 year old star defender Dejan Lovren has been bought by French powerhouse Olympique Lyonnais for 10 million Euros. During my time in Croatia this past year, I ran into some big time Croatian celebrities, none bigger than Duško Lokin. The Zadar born Croatian singer and I met in Zagreb to discuss a possible North American tour this year. Duško is presently in Australia on tour to promote his final album, "Ja ne živim bez tebe" which debuted on November 16th, exactly 40 years after releasing his first single. The 66 year old Dalmatian legend sold five million albums and toured all over the world. At 17 Dusko had a brief stint in Croatian soccer, played professionally in the then Yugoslav second division.

Belgium will host the Vatreni in Brussels on March 3 for Croatia's first NT contest of 2010. Though not a traditional European soccer power, Belgium is a young, formidable, and talented squad that is looking to make a name for itself in the European soccer scene.

As we wait for Slaven Bilić to announce an official roster in the coming weeks, we must consider that facing an opponent of Belgium's standing and reputation will allow our own young players and NT hopefuls like Danijel Subašić, Nikica Jelavić, Manuel Pamić, Mladen Bartulović, and Drago Gabrić a chance to prove their capabilities against another well-matched and youthful European side. Our stars will get their playing time, but this contest is specifically catered to our younger players looking to earn a permanent roster spot come September and the arrival of EURO 2012 qualification.

Personally, I applaud the HNS for taking this game. Easy tests against European minnows like Moldova and Liechtenstein provide us with little feedback on the state of our squad and its proficiency against stronger opponents. The clock is ticking on Slaven Bilić to put a solid squad together. September will be here before we know it.

Arsenal scored twice after the hour mark to come from behind and beat West Ham at Upton Park and advance to the FA Cup fourth round. Eduardo started for the Gunners and played the full 90 minutes, heading in the game winner in the 83rd minute of play off a Carlos Vela cross. A vintage Eduardo goal similar to the one he scored against England in Euro 2008 Qualifying in Zagreb.

Croatian football started off with a bang in 2010 as Niko Kranjčar, Luka Modrić, Nikola Kalinić, and Ivan Klasnić all made the stat sheet today for their respectful EPL teams in FA Cup round of 64.

Niko Kranjčar and Luka Modrić both started for Tottenham for the first time ever. Luka assisted on Niko's first goal in the 35th minute of play, as Niko blasted in a beauty just outside the box.

Kranjčar would score Tottenham's second goal in the 57th minute after breaking free from careless Peterborough defending and easily finding the back of the net. Vedran Ćorluka was not featured for Tottenham, most likely rested for next weeks big game at Liverpool.

Nikola Kalinić made the start for Blackburn in a 3-1 defeat at Aston Villa. In front of 25,453 at Villa Park, Nikola played the full 90, scoring in the 55th minute of play off a Blackburn corner. Skysports gave Nikola rating of 6.5.

Ivan Klasnić started and played well in 58 minutes of play for Bolton in a 4-0 home victory over Lincoln City. Ivan assisted on Yong Lee goal in the 51st minute of play. Skysports gave Ivan a rating of 7.

As 2009 comes to a close, many of you are hoping that Croatian soccer will return in 2010 with a bang. Not gonna happen. Croatia will schedule(hopefully) a few friendlies scattered around the first part of 2010, watch the world cup on television, and won't be tested until the first European Cup qualifier sometime in September. Vatreni will not have an opportunity to redeem themselves from Turkey(Euro 2008) and World Cup qualifying(2010) until 2011.

Here is a little American humor to take you into 2010. Thanks to (soon to be famous)Prva Generacija and the rest of the CSR family for sticking with us all year and making CSR what it is today. Ante, Ivica and I will continue to work hard to build on what we have achieved in 2009.

KILLER HAS BEEN UNSTOPPABLE THESE DAYS

Ivan Klasnić scored a screamer of a goal in the 20th minute of Bolton's match against Hull City on Tuesday. He took in a header, made one touch on the ball and struck a rocket into the bottom right corner of the net. Klasnić absolutely seems possessed at the moment in England. He has now secured his starting spot at Bolton and is averaging 60-75 minutes a game while scoring six goals in 13 Bolton appearances.

Relegation candidates Bolton took a 2-0 lead only to see it evaporate in front of their eyes as Hull's Stephen Hunt scored two late goals within eight minutes of each other to force a 2-2 draw.

Only six months ago, Ivan Klasnić looked to be out of favor as a Croatian national striker and moaning about his situation at French second division club Nantes. A loan to the Bolton Wanderers of the English Premier League has seemed to solve all his problems and rejuvenate his career. His stock is quickly rising but can 'Killer' remain consistent in the rough and rigorous Premiership? And where does he currently stand on Croatia's striker depth chart?

MODRIĆ CELEBRATES AT WHITE HEART LANE

Luka Modrić made his first start for the Tottenham Hotspur since breaking his leg in August in place of fellow Croat Niko Kranjčar Monday against West Ham United. Modrić didn't miss a beat as he got on the scoresheet only 11 minutes after the opening whistle. Modrić started the play by bringing up the ball from his own half before making a mad dash towards goal and firing in a missed connection from teammate Aaron Lennon off the turf. Modrić looks like he hasn't been away from the game for a minute as Tottenham beat West Ham 2-0 to take sole possession of fourth place in England. The Spurs will have a legitimate chance of qualifying for next year's Champions League should they remain healthy. All three Croatians are currently firing on all cylinders; will more join in January?

Vedran Ćorluka once again played the full 90 minutes for another Tottenham Hotspur clean sheet. There isn't much to say about Ćorluka at the moment, and for a defender, that can only mean good news as he's doing his job. I expect Ćarli to get some rest this Saturday when Tottenham take on Peterborough United in FA Cup action.

CAN MODRIĆ AND KRANJČAR CO-EXIST ON THE FIELD FOR TOTTENHAM?

Niko Kranjčar made a brief cameo appearance coming into the game for Modrić in the 83'. But the question still lies, will Kranjčar and Modrić get a chance to play together side-by-side for Tottenham during the final stretch of the season?

Nikola Kalinić was inserted into Blackburn's match against Sunderland in the 73'. Kalinić was on the field for the Rovers equalizer as the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Kale is still struggling to find the back of the net in England. Will he pick up his game when the clouds overhead part? If that's the case, don't hold your breath!

Arsenal defeated a lackluster Portsmouth side 4-1 from Fratton Park with just over 20,000 fans in attendance. Eduardo notched the first tally of the contest in the 27' after drilling a low free-kick, with the ball deflecting off Portsmouth defender Kaboul and past goalkeeper Hermann Hreidarsson on the right-hand post.

Arsenal made it 2-0 when Song fed Eduardo in the left of the area, who in turn pulled the ball back for teammate Aaron Ramsey, who picked out Sammir Nasri to drill a low strike into the bottom corner of the net. Eduardo would be subbed after a stellar performance in the 72' for Tomas Rosicky. Skysports.com gave Dudu a rating of 7, as he appears to be "nearing top form." Let's hope so!

NIKO KRANJČAR IN ACTION AGAINST FULHAM

Niko Kranjčar and his Tottenham crew travelled to Craven Cottage on Boxing Day to take on Fulham FC. Kranjčar once again started for the Spurs in an exciting 0-0 draw which could have gone either way. After being fouled 20 yards out in the 20th minute, Niko struck the free kick only inches wide of the left post. He played well in the game; missing a few opportunities that could have lead to goals, but it's hard to stay on fire week in and week out in the Premiership. With Tottenham having to play West Ham United 48 hours after the Fulham match, fatigue management must have been on players minds. Kranjčar was subbed out in the 71' for Luka Modrić.

ĆORLUKA HOLDING HIS OWN

Vedran Ćorluka helped deny endless attacks from the Fulham strikers to preserve the clean sheet for Tottenham. Although it wasn't Ćorluka's 'A game', it got the job done as he seemed 'out of it' on a few plays. Ćarli played his usual 90 minutes for the Spurs but will we see him again on Monday against West Ham. With the Premiership schedule playing two rounds in one week, look for some regular starters to get some much needed rest this week. Tottenham is in the Champions League mix for next season and will only benefit from resting regulars and keeping them fresh throughout the final stretch with Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool still having to compete in Europe.

MODRIĆ FIGHTING FOR THE HEADER

Luka Modrić entered the game in the 71' but couldn't get any solid looks on goal. He is still getting back in the thick of things but it's fantastic to see him play without any problems from his broken leg. We still haven't seen Modrić and Kranjčar start together. Is it in Harry Redknapp's plans or will they only substitute each other the rest of the season?

Ivan Klasnić and Bolton were in action at Burnley in front of 21,761 at Turf Moor. Ivan started and played 67 minutes in a 1-1 draw. After going up 1-0, Ivan failed to double the score just seconds before the halftime whistle, as Brian Jensen denied 'the killer' his sixth premiership goal. Skysports gave Ivan a grade of 6, "should have done better with first-half chance."

Eduardo failed to show up on Sunday in 64 minutes of work at home to Aston Villa. Arsenal scored all three goals after Eduardo left the pitch, giving Aston Villa their first loss in five matches. Skysports gave Eduardo a respectable grade of 7. Eduardo is having a rough road to recovery, scoring only twice in 12 Premiership games this season. Hopefully, Eddie will have better luck in 2010.

Nikola Kalinić was an unused substitute for Balckburn in a 1-1 away draw to Wigan. Nikola has yet to score a goal in ten Premiership matches. Blackburn have now gone winless in their last seven matches.

Ivan Perišić played the entire match in Club Brugge's 2-1 derby victory over Cercle Brugge KSV from the Jan Breydel Stadium on Saturday. With the win, Club Brugge remain in 2nd place of the Belgian Jupiler standings behind Anderlecht. Club Brugge are away at KV Kortrijk on Wednesday in league action.

It has been a solid season thus far for the young Perišić, who transferred from French outfit Sochaux after spending a season on loan at Roeselare of the Juliper league. With his transfer complete this past summer, the Split native saw action almost immediately for his new side, quickly becoming a fan favorite for his goal-scoring ability, work-ethic, and passionate celebrations. Perišić has enjoyed an abundance of playing time in the Belgian Jupiler League and also in the inaugural season of the UEFA Europa League, leading his squad out of the group stage (2nd place, Group J) to set up a two-leg knockout stage showdown with formidable Spanish side Valencia.

An incredible season in Belgium earned Perišić a well-deserved call-up from the Croatia U-21 National team coach Dražen Ladić. The move, along with the addition of fellow players Nikola Kalinić and Ivan Rakitić changed the makeup of the Croatia U-21 squad seemingly overnight. The roster moves propelled wins over Serbia, Cyprus, and Slovakia and moved Croatia into first place of Group 7 heading into 2010.

In time, with continued success on the club and NT level, the Jupiler League will become a thing of the past for young Perišić, as a new challenge will be needed to further develop him as a player. Big clubs from the big leagues will be certain to make offers for his services. Will 2010 be the year he makes the jump?

"THE LOST POST"

As the winter transfer window approaches (Jan 1st-Feb 2nd) for European clubs, management and coaches across the continent will try to tinker with roster spots attempting to bring in those one or two players that can become the missing piece to the puzzle of an eventual strong finish to the current season. Let's take a look at what Croatians are currently on the Hot Stove for a transfer in the upcoming month.

1. IVAN RAKITIC (SCHALKE)

Ivan Rakitić's position at Schalke has been a regular topic for discussion during CSR's 'Croatians Around Europe' feature. Only weeks ago, Rakitić's stats this season were only one goal in seven Bundesliga matches, having made just four starts. During this stint, he was subbed at half time on three occasions. However, the last month has been better for Rakitić as he reported that his relationship with Felix Magath is improving. Rakitić has undeniable talent at age 21 and still has a big career ahead of him. Rakitić has already made 24 appearences for Croatia scoring a respectable seven times. Rakitić has regularly been linked with a move away from Schalke, but it is unlikely we will see Rakitić turning out for the previously mentioned Inter, Juventus or Arsenal in the new year. A midtable Serie A club looks very possible though with Palermo and Everton also rumored to be very keen on him. Don't count out Rakitić staying with Schalke until at least the end of this season. Possibility: 20%

2. JERKO LEKO (MONACO)

Jerko Leko's status within Monaco has been so bad that he may be calling on the help of old friends this winter to achieve a transfer. The 29 year old is no longer trusted by Monaco's Guy Lacombe and has now been dumped from the national team by Slaven Bilić. Having spurned good offers in the summer from English Premiership clubs Stoke City, Wolverhampton and Portsmouth, Leko's hope of a transfer now appears to rest either in Germany, Austria or via a move to the Russian Premier League. However, as the player has no serious football since last season, his fitness levels may be brought into question. A rumor linking Leko with Chelsea was reported on Eurosport, but it appears this came as a consequence of a recommendation which Chelsea are unlikely to act upon. Possibility: 100%

3. DARIJO SRNA (SHAKHTAR DONETSK)

Darijo Srna continues to be linked with every western European powerhouse on the map, but once again it remains only speculation as to where or if he will transfer at all. Srna still seems more than satisfied with his status as captain of Shakhtar, which solidifies his position in the Croatian national team in the face of competition from Ivan Rakitić and Drago Gabrić. His very high transfer value is believed to be in the region of 15-18 million Euro while already putting off numerous big clubs earlier in the year. Chelsea is the latest to be linked as the English Premier League side consider replacements for the currently injured Jose Bosingwa allowing Branislav Ivanović to be used as a utility defender. Possibility: 20%

4. LUKA MODRIĆ (TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR)

The form of Niko Kranjčar for Tottenham gives rise to the possibility that Harry Redknapp might consider a major substantial offer made for Luka Modrić. Rumors of Manchester United and Inter Milan moving for the player circulated in the summer and would seem unlikely Spurs would reject a Champions League club. Redknapp has also been told he needed to raise funds if he is to bring in any new player, but would prefer to offload the likes of Alan Hutton, Roman Pavyulchenko, Gareth Bale, Giovanni Dos Santos and David Bentley before mulling over any transfer of Modrić or Jermaine Jenas. Modrić's brief for 2010 may be to dislodge Tom Huddlestone from the center of the Spurs midfield in order to break back into the side should Kranjčar continue to shine. Possibility: 10%

5. IGOR BUDAN (PALERMO)

Although Igor Budan describes his relationship in Palermo as excellent, the striker may be tempted to switch clubs in the winter with many lower level Serie A sides very interested in offering the player regular first team football. Budan has appeared 15 times scoring five goals for Palermo, but has started only four games. It is believed Palermo would now like to step up to the next level to become a competitive top flight side in Serie A and may be willing to part with their 30 year old striker. Bari wanted the player in the summer, but Livorno are now also believed to be tracking Igor. Budan is not under great pressure to transfer in order to secure his national team place, so it is possible that Budan may stay with his small time role until the summer. Possibility: 20%

6. STIPE PLETIKOSA (SPARTAK MOSCOW)

The plight Croatia's undisputed first choice keeper has been startling. Capped 79 times, Pletikosa had appeared as the unrivaled starter for Spartak Moscow at the beginning of the season after an impressive Euro 2008 campaign for Croatia's national side. However, a few average games later in Russia and an unsteady showing in Croatia's 4-1 loss to England was all that it took for Pletikosa to find himself out in the cold going three months without any competitive football. In response Pletikosa attempted a last ditch effort to transfer before the summer deadline, but suffered ligament damage in training with Spartak blowing any possibility of being moved. Having missed the remainder of 2009, Pletikosa will have to wait to make another bid for a new club in July. Spartak Moscow justified their decision to give Soslan Dzhaneyev the gloves as they finished runners up in the Russian Premier League. It is unlikely coach Valeri Karpin will change his mind. Croatia coach Slaven Bilić on the other hand is willing to offer Pletikosa a way back should he find a new team in 2010. Possibility: 30%

7. NIKICA JELAVIĆ (RAPID VIENNA)

A winter transfer would be fitting with Nikica Jelavić's astronomical rise. Since Rapid took a gamble on signing the 23 year old striker from Zaregem after scoring just seven goals during last season's campaign, Jelavić has never looked back. Jelavić has gone on to nestle the ball 19 times into the back of opponents nets between the months of July and December, leaving Rapid Vienna with a dilemma. With the player's value having rocketed since they bought him for a measely couple of hundred thousand, Rapid may consider a sale. Jelavić's form has been so good that his status in the Croatian national team would also have improved even rivalling a revitalized Ivan Klasnić and a tried and trusted Eduardo for a shirt. Possibility: 50%

8. JURICA VRANJEŠ (WERDER BREMEN)

Jurica Vranješ' status compares to Jerko Leko's in that he is out of the plans of the first team at Bremen. However, as Vranješ plays with a much stronger side in Bremen, he is more likely to attract a move. Vranješ in fact was said to be furious that he could not get out of Bremen before the transfer window and exchanged words with coach Thomas Schaff in a heated discussion. It is likely that Vranješ and his agent would have been getting something ready for this winter. Vranješ would prefer to stay in the Bundesliga possibly with former teammate Zvonimir Soldo at Koln. It is also possible that this could be a new signing for Hajduk Split in the winter. Vranješ is known to be a fan of Hajduk and almost returned to Croatia from Bayer Leverkusen when he was a Croatia international. Possibility: 100%

9. DARIO ŠIMIĆ (MONACO)

It is hard to know the plans of Dario Šimić at age 34. It appears obvious that Šimić would like to retire at the end of the season and expressed hope of playing the next six months with Dinamo Zagreb. Dinamo appear less enthusiastic however, purely due to the fact they have no idea where to fit him in or any real cause to make the signing. Dinamo appear to be more keen to continue with youngsters Ivan Tomečak and Tomislav Barbarić rather than affect their progress through signing Šimić. Dinamo are also carrying another old timer in Robert Kovač on their roster along with Igor Biščan and definite first teamer Dejan Lovren. Šimić himself appears disinterested in a move to any other Croatian club and six months living in Monaco would not be the most galling way to finish his career. If Šimić were to transfer to a smaller French club or even to Greece, it looks like that would be the final straw for Croatia's only 100-time capped player. Possibility: 60%

10. ANDREJ KERIĆ (SLOVAN LIBEREC)

Disaster would be the only way to describe Andrej Kerić this season. Coming only months after becoming the top scorer in the Czech League with Slovan Liberec during the 2008/09 campaign, the 24 year old has bizarrely played 18 games scoring just 2 goals leaving his hopes of stepping up to the next level in tatters. Kerić, however is at a small club and it may be that the pressure of being relied on to lead the team has took its toll on him. A move to a better side in Croatia or another country may be all that is required to get Kerić firing again. It is hard to believe that a player who scored 21 in 51 games so recently for Slovan could suddenly have gone cold overnight. Possibility: 20%

11. DINO DRPIĆ (KARLSRUHRE)

It appears that football fans will once again be exposed to the shananigans of the Drpić's this winter. While Drpić plays unsuccessfully with a midtable second division side at Karlsruhre, he is sure to get out at the soonest possible moment. It is very likely that Dino Drpić will make a bid to transfer from his club this winter. the most ideal move for the player would be if a top flight Bundesliga club took him on. Several clubs including HSV, Hertha Berlin and Bordeaux were linked, but nothing materialized. Drpić transferring to Hertha wouldn't be out the question. It is hardly likely Drpić will be willing to stay in Bundesliga 2 which does little for his hopes of international football. From the perspective of Dinamo looking back, it was a great move to shift Drpić off their books. Possibility: 50%

12. ANTE RUKAVINA (PANATHINAIKOS)

Whether Ante Rukavina transfers or not will depend on the player's desire for first team football. Despite being at a big club, Rukavina has yet to convince the coaching staff of his ability to start matches. Rukavina played 25 matches for Panathinaikos last season scoring seven goals, but had just eight starts. Despite those numbers, coach Henk Ten Cate plays the one striker he recently signed, Djibril Cissie, rather than turn to Rukavina. It is believed Dmitrios Salpingdis is his second preferred option. For Rukavina it will be interesting to see if he makes a gamble and transfers or plods along with Panathinaikos till the end of the season. So far, Croatia fans have not seen enough of Rukavina at Hajduk or Panathinaikos to understand if he will become a potential national team star or not. It would appear the 23 year old needs to drop down to a smaller club in order to move forward in his career. Possibility: 10%

13. MLADEN BARTULOVIĆ (KRIVBASS)

Mladen Bartulović has been the one beacon of light during a poor season for relegation threatened Ukrainian Premier League side Krivbass. The Croatian international has been on loan from Dnipro for a second time having signed during half of the 2008/09 campaign. Bartulović's form has been so good in the last few months that he was fielded by Croatia coach Slaven Bilić in the country's most recent friendly with Liechtenstein. The wideman has scored a sparkling eight goals in 17 matches and made 5 assists. Now back at Dnipro he is desperate for a transfer during the winter break to a stronger club. At 23 Bartulovic still has time to realize the potential he showed at Hajduk Split which earned his transfer to Dnipro in 2006. It is not certain why he was allowed to go on loan considering his current form, but it appears best for the player to transfer into another country. It is not expected that Bartulović would return to Croatia. However, he would make a more than worthwhile signing for either Dinamo or Hajduk, who could both afford the compensation Dnipro would be asking, which is believed to be in the region of 1 million Euro. Possibility: 30%

14. DANIJEL CESAREC (ASTERAS TRIPOLIS)

Having scored his ninth goal of the season in just 14 appearences, it would be high time to announce the name of Danijel Cesarec to the CSR reader. Cesarec sits top of the Greek league in scoring alongside French hotshot Djibril Cisse. Cesarec is already 26 and may be unfamilar to Croats having left the Balkan state way back in 2002, signing with Sparta Prague from Marsonia. The Czech's never saw the best of him despite staying long enough to claim nationality as he moved across to Greece with Akratitos. A strong 2004/05 season with them led to switches to Egaeleo and then to Asteras. In 2009 Cesarec has finally found his best form and could be about to finally step up his career to a higher level. With his contract due to expire in the summer, Asteras may be forced to cash in on the striker. It will be interesting to see what 2010 brings for Cesarec who could appear in a Croatia shirt should his form continue in the not too distant future. Possibility: 50%

15. MANUEL PAMIĆ (RED BULL SALZBURG)

After a very successful loan spell in the Czech Republic with Sparta Prague, Manuel Pamić's one year loan deal has now expired. He returns to Red Bull Salzburg where his status at the moment is unclear. Dinamo Zagreb have already made it clear they admire the player and Pamić was believed to be their primary target in the summer. However Pamić could well have done enough in Sparta to attract a stronger foriegn club or to break into the Red Bull side. It will be interesting to see what happens with Pamić during January. Possibility: 30%
