A short documentary about a kinetic sculpture created by Christopher “Chris” Burden, an American artist working in performance, sculpture, and installation art. Burden just finished his kinetic sculpture this summer, which took four years to build. It is to be installed at LACMA (the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art) in Fall 2011.

Supreme Believers

A relentless struggle towards an unseen sonic superpower,
eroding the believers into sculptural fragments.

Fantastic piece by Matt Pyke, the English digital artist at the centre of Universal Everything, a collective of designers, programmers, musicians and artists renowned for its boundary-pushing works. The first video below shows only a short sequence. The second video presents the final creation as it was recently featured, across a wall spanning 69 feet, at Paris’s La Gaîté Lyrique for the exhibition Matt Pyke & Friends: Super-Computer-Romantics. The combination of dance, video, animated 3D particles and sound design creates a brilliant artistic experience.

A Visual Notebook

I recently discovered a stunning short entitled the “Visual Notebook” by novelist Madeleine Thien, but saw immediately that it was much more than a book trailer or promotional tool. Instead, it is a complement to her recently released book, Dogs at the Perimeter, which tells the story of Janie, a Cambodian-Canadian, who struggles to reconcile her childhood surviving the Khmer Rouge with her adult life in Canada. I had a chance to speak to Thien about her new venture and she had this to say:

I felt compelled to make this visual notebook because I wanted people to see the images that had haunted me, that spoke to the Cambodia that existed in the 1960s and early 70s. The visual notebook contains some of the images in Janie’s mind, an avalanche of memories, never fitting together, hearkening back to a city and a country and a people that were lost; and also images of the Khmer Rouge time that, perhaps, need to be seen to be believed.

Isn’t an author’s visual notebook more likely to pique our interest rather than a book trailer?

Tribute to Rene

In this interesting motion-graphics tribute to the great surrealist painter, London-based Box Of Toys Audio and video art studio flipEVIL explore some of René Magritte’s most iconic creations with 3D animation. I liked that they didn’t attempt any exact replications, although it’s been done with some success before in the 3D rendering of Picasso’s Guernica. Instead, with the help of an original piano score, they focused on the more intriguing, mind-bending aspect of Magritte’s imagery. After all, the goal of the master’s work was to challenge observers’ preconceived notions of reality and compel them to be hyper aware of their surroundings.

Phlegm

Phlegm is a cartoonist and illustrator born in North Wales who now resides in Sheffield, England. Well known for his self-published comics, also entitled “Phlegm,” the artist has put out new work three times a year since 2005 and has sold throughout the UK, and the world, specifically in Germany, Australia, Japan and the US. There is an obvious correlation between his comics and his work as a street artist.

“I love to get run down urban spaces and factories and play with the space. It’s such an immediate way to get your picture on the wall. A painting in the street becomes part of the cities architecture, influenced by what’s around it rather than being some awkward canvas in an art gallery.” – Phlegm

Underwater Sculptures

Growing up in Europe and Asia to an English father and Guyanese mother, Jason deCaires Taylor spent much of his childhood on the coral reefs of Malaysia where he developed a profound love of the sea. His interest in the relationship between art and the environment first developed in his teenage years when his work as a graffiti artist triggered a desire to create art in public spaces. He graduated in 1998 from the London Institute of Arts, with a B.A. Honours in Sculpture and Ceramics. Now specializing in the creation of contemporary underwater sculptures, which over time developed into artificial coral reefs, deCaires Taylor is currently the founder and Artistic Director of the Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA) in Cancun, Mexico.

Love & Theft

A fantastic short by Studio FILM BILDER, the same studio behind the animated sequence in Run Lola Run 13 years ago. A beautiful, at times slightly disturbing, look inside our collective minds in the form of a 2D morphing animation. Scripted, directed and animated by Andreas Hykade, who has taught animation since 2000, first at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Germany and then since 2008 at Harvard University. Hykade’s also given a masterclass around the world, including one at the Cinémathèque québécoise in 2010.

One of the strong points of the film is the tight integration between the musical score and the animation. I also like that the short is loaded with references to well-known animated characters like Charlie Brown, Hello Kitty, SpongeBob, Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop and many more. Can you name the other characters?

Jacek Yerka

Born in Toruń, Poland, Jacek Yerka graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University, specializing in printmaking. He began working full time as an artist in 1980. Yerka cites the master painters of the 15th and 16th centuries, Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, Cagliostro, Jan van Eyck, and Hugo van der Goes, as powerful early influences. The meticulous classic Flemish technique still characterizes his work. Odd beasts and whimsical landscapes incorporating extraordinary architecture populate his surreal compositions, inspired by imagery from his childhood. “For me, the 1950s were a kind of Golden Age … If I were, for instance, to paint a computer, it would definitely have a pre-war aesthetic to it.” His work has been exhibited in Poland, Germany, Monaco, France, and the United States, and may be found in museums in Poland. Dripped

Dripped is a fantastic animated short telling the story of an unusual art lover. Selected at the 2011 Annecy animation film festival, this film features beautiful vintage-styled visuals, great animation and a cool jazz score. It is truly a treat to watch. What’s more, it turns out that it is an animated tribute to one of my favorite painters at the beginning of his ‘drip’ period…
