A Fresh Look…

This Sunday we’re taking a fresh look at mission.

Lot’s of people ‘freak out’ a little bit when they hear this word. They’re afraid that if God ‘speaks to them’ they will have to pack-up all their belongings and head into the deepest, darkest parts of the world and become Missionaries. While for some that may well be true, for the rest of us we actually all share in the call to mission.

Our vision statement includes the following commitment:

‘…constantly giving birth to new mission.’

That commitment includes giving away out people, our time, our talents and our money all for the sake of the Gospel.

It’s a high and holy calling!

It has been said that, “If you are too busy for God, you are too busy.” In the midst of our busyness let’s remember how much we need God. Let’s make prayer our daily practice in the hope it will become our ‘first resort’ rather than our last!

Little Rockets is our program for pre-schoolers upto Preps. Our program continues this week with lots of fun activities, songs, and another fantastic bible story in the Music Room. Contact Paul Davidson  for more details!

Excerpts from Psalm 31…

The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family … She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Honour her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Can you help?
The Salvation Army is one of the key leaders in the local community in providing assistance to needy people in a variety of ways including homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, aged care, youth services, and family services as well as providing food and welfare assistance.
Each year the Salvos have the opportunity to collect at intersections, airports and shopping centres to raise funds and this year they are short of volunteers to help. Are you available to help for a couple of hours on Monday 14th, Wednesday 16th or Friday 18th at the Airport or on Saturday the 19th or 26th at local intersections? Please email Gary Grant to volunteer.

Crossway North Welcomes…

This Sunday, we welcome Roderick Gilbert to Crossway North. Roderick has been used by God in a mighty way to spark a movement of phenomenal Church Growth in many parts of India.

Our Vision at Crossway North is, in part, to be ‘locally engaged, regionally focused and globally aware’. This week and on the 20th of May we will be concentrating on our part in global missions. We also plan to be ‘constantly giving birth to new mission’. I am confident Gilbert will greatly encourage us toward these ‘God desired outcomes’!

Alpha started last Sunday and will be meeting again this Sunday from 7pm at Dean and Michelle Parker’s. B.U.V. Gathering

Next weekend Crossway North will be recognized as a ‘Fellowship’ at the Baptist Union of Victoria Annual Gathering meeting at Mitcham Baptist on May 4 and 5, 2012.

This is our next significant step in God. It is a step of faith (Hebrews 11:1); it is helping us to better fulfil our mission & vision:

A whole people caring for the whole world – we see God leading a caring family, thriving through discipleship; locally engaged, regionally focused, globally aware and constantly giving birth to new mission.

Five-4-Five

Two or three times a year we replace our regular preacher with five people sharing for five minutes each around a common topic. This week, our speakers will be sharing their thoughts on John 10:10:

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

We are looking forward to hearing what God might want to reveal through the 5 minute devotionals that we will hear on Sunday. We may even unearth a budding preacher!

Ever heard of Power Walking? Power Walking is rapid walking accompanied by vigorous swinging of the arms. It is designed to achieve maximum effect in a short period of time.
On Sunday we are launching Power Praying! Power Praying is fast, enthusiastic praying, designed for maximum effect, as the body of Christ are committed and unified to Power Pray each day.
It has been said that, “If you are too busy for God, you are too busy.” In the midst of our busyness let’s remember how much we need God. Let’s make prayer our daily practice in the hope it will become our ‘first resort’ rather than our last!
If you find it hard to attend a prayer meeting, then this is for you! Pray in the car, on the train, on your lunch break, waiting in line, or even in the bathroom!! Everyone can participate. A monthly prayer guide is available on request. Sign up today!

Philip was young boy with Down Syndrome. He was a pleasant child and went to Sunday School with nine other eight year old boys and girls. In spite of being different, Philip did his best to fit in with the class.

For the Sunday prior to Easter, Philip’s Sunday School teacher had a marvellous idea for his class. Each child was given a plastic Easter egg and was told to go outside and find a symbol of new life, put it in the egg and come back to the classroom. All the eggs were put on the table and, one by one, the teacher opened them. One contained a flower, one a butterfly and another a leaf. Then one was opened and to the surprise of the class there was nothing in it. The children laughed and some said how stupid it was.

At that point Philip stood up and said, “That’s mine”. “You don’t ever do things right, Philip”, the children said. “That’s not fair”, said Philip. “It’s empty because Jesus’ tomb was empty”.

There was silence and from that time on, things were different. Philip suddenly became part of the group. They now accepted him. Not long after that, Philip died from an infection that most children could have quickly shrugged off.

At his funeral, nine eight year old children together with their Sunday School teacher marched up to the altar of the Church and laid on it an empty egg – an empty, old, discarded plastic egg.

Re-Engage…

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)

The invitation and the empowerment to live a life following Him, that’s what a relationship with Jesus does. It anchors us in truth and sets us up for a life of purpose and fulfilment as only a God-ordained plan could do.

But how easy it is to head our own way! What if Peter and John had turned back to Jesus and said, “Sorry Jesus, we are just too busy with our fishing to follow you. Maybe next time you come past we can have a coffee and talk about what it means to follow you? Can I take a rain check?”

Sometimes in life I do that. We all do! The pressures of today’s society are great but there is one consistent message that has come through the ages:

“Come, follow me.”

Celebrate!

Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, job promotions; all of these are reasons to celebrate! The Scriptures say that ‘…in the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.’ (Luke15:10)

This Sunday, we welcome Joanne Darling, Alice Davies, Kerrie Holland, Jody and Clint Rowley, Don and June Wesley, and Rufus Wilson in membership AND we share in the joy of baptising Joanne Darling and Sam Scuderi.

This gives us another good reason to celebrate too!

Awakening 2012: Power Praying
It has been said that, “If you are too busy for God, you are too busy.” In the midst of our busyness let’s remember how much we need God. Let’s make prayer our daily practice in the hope it will become our ‘first resort’ rather than our last!

Prayer Walk for Islamic Breakthrough
On Friday the 23rd of March Pastor Dave Lawton will be leading a Prayer Walk for Islamic Breakthrough. Meet up at Marguerite’s at 1pm for prayer before we head out at 2pm to start the prayer walk. Meeting back up at Marguerite’s at 7.30pm to continue in prayer. This will be followed by another prayer walk on Easter Day. More details on the second prayer walk will be coming soon. Healthy Habits

 As a part of our new preaching series entitled ‘Healthy Habits’ I want to encourage as any as possible of you to engage in what Praxeis, our Church-planting community, are conducting – 40 Days of prayer and fasting (12 March-20th April).

During this time you are also invited to participate in our ‘Harvest Sundays Prayer Walks’ (2:00pm-5:30pm) in five key areas of Melbourne targeting key strongholds in our city. We are calling as many people as possible to join us and prayer walk these areas of our city:

• 18th March: Clayton
• 25th March: City/Fitzroy
• 1st April: Springdale/Dandenong
• 8th April: Broadmeadows on Easter Sunday!
• 15th April: Werribee
