We sit next to each other at work but most of our conversations are on IM. Or in my mind.

I've been looking for an excuse to do something Street Fighter themed for a while, when I saw this week's lunchcrunch was Appliances Doing Battle I knew this was the time! I imagined a washing machine throwing a wet-sweater-hadoken at a refrigerator. Initially based on Ryu's character I realized the appliance would work better as a red "Kenmore". I combined the Dyson vacuum and M. Bison as

This week's lunch crunch challenge was to recreate an object to your left as a character. I have a big LED desk lamp to my left at work so I chose that. I kind've jumped into rendering it without much thought yet how it could be a character.  About halfway through I felt like the perspective was really wonky so I repositioned the light a little. In hindsight I think that hurt the

This week's lunch crunch theme was "main character (or villain) of the last film you saw/book you read as the opposite gender". This was tricky because I just saw "Magic Mike" and I really didn't want to make a female Channing Tatum, so I went with the other movie I recently saw "The Physician". I think I should have added more scars, no teeth and *at least* one eye patch to make this

Last week's lunch crunch art challenge was "Cartoons from your childhood". I picked David the Gnome and created a young Swift as his trusty companion. I used several reference photos of foxes and really liked the lighting in one of them so I based the colors off that. Painting the hair was a bit of a mess but favorite part was actually the stubby hand I painted towards the end. I kind've

This week's lunch crunch art challenge was "Star Wars" and/or "Game of Thrones". I found some photos of actress Natalie Dormer with a half-shaved hair cut that looked pretty fun to use so I turned Margaery Tyrell into a Sith villainess. I wanted to practice line work at first but struggled with many wrinkles and rough lines so I moved onto color to fix those. The warp tool in Photoshop came

This week's lunch crunch art theme is "Einstein as a Barbarian". I teamed up with the illustrious Cesar Kobashikawa to share his calligraphy goodness with my irresponsible painting.

Painting practice trying to stay broad and loose and refine as I go without getting too focused on one area.

Just watched The Road, what a haunting and heart wrenching movie. Painting practice with a single tear.

This is how I spent my evening, animating a page from the Valkyria Chronicles art book.

This week I've been working on ideas for narratives and creating thumbnails for them. Drawing taking longer than I'd like but I'm quickly finding that it takes even longer to come up with the ideas first! In addition I had an assignment to create thumbnails of compositions with just shapes. It's been fun focusing on the foundation of narratives and composition first. It's tempting to brush

Here's my submission for this week. I used the sinewave curves adjustment technique my teacher demonstrated in class to make some of the surfaces even more chromed out.

This week I've been practicing painting metal surfaces on the provided line art from the Materials 101 class I'm taking. I first scaled the image up to about 4x the original to get a little more room for details. The downside is it added more work to paint but I wanted a crisper end result. I painted in the shapes first then started to hand paint some gradients and spec but the metal surface

I'm taking a Materials 101 class which started last week (thanks Uncle Sony for the tuition), first assignment is to paint three spheres of three different materials so here we go! The pearl was the trickiest because most of the references I found were on a white background reflecting white surfaces while this one is on a dark surface. It started looking more like a fish egg so I tried to

Sent to the printers, came out great!

While waiting for my new web domain to get registered I've been working on details of my pixelated twin for the business card. It always amazes me how much a few choice pixels placed differently change an entire expression on a face or silhouette of an element when working on a small scale. I widened the eyes a bit, tried to make them look more specular and added a wider range of

I've been working with the print shop on a self assembled papercraft business card. My initial mockup relied on strips of adhesive which has been difficult to get manufactured for a small run budget. The print shop can score, die-cut and perforate which still gives me a lot of options. After several experiments and advice from co-workers I created a built-in lock/tab into the card which is

Something I've been working on lately, having fun getting back into pixel art and combining it with paper craft.
