The Crew Lecturer, mainly responsible for the language programs (“American English for Crew” and Italian for Foreigners), is also in charge for all training programs on the ship, implemented by the Costa Campus ashore.

Reports to both the Costa Campus - Language Skills Manager ashore and the Hotel Director onboard, performs a different variety of duties from facilitating training, keeping track of, reporting training data and holding English/Italian classes for crew.

Candidate must be/have:

Italian mothertongue
Perfectly fluent in English (bilingual preferred)
University Degree in Foreign Languages or other degree
Certificate of TESL or similar
Previous experience in teaching adults/groups

Top Tips for working on board Cruise Ships

Luxury passenger vessels have always held a kind of fascination in the minds of the young and the old alike. Many people dream of taking a world cruise and others like me, dreamt of working onboard!

With the current scale of expansion of new vessels with ultra modern facilities, ease with which newer Cruise Line Companies are being formulated the world over, the opportunity to work on board is HUGE compared to the 1960's or 1970's!

The world is however awash with information overload and with so many search engines available to source information, much of the content leads to a dead end or a train of costs. So how does one successfully prepare to fulfill that dream of working on board? What is the best advice that you can follow?

If you are a professional with a specific trade your task is easier, as you already know which position you should target to work on board a Cruise Ship. If not, identify you your area of specialization that compliments your skills and experience, then work towards development by looking at the following areas…

1. English is a highly important requirement. If you are weak in the language develop it, if you are strong, fortify it.

2. Learn a Foreign Language. At least the basics! Google is a good place to get your translation instantly. Listen to the radio or a music video. On board the ships, Spanish is the second most important language you are likely come across. Italian and German are also important.

3. Attend a Sea-faring course called STCW 95 and PSF, which are an absolute requirement to have in advance for many Cruise Lines. These courses are available in all major cities of India and the same is true on a global scale. Some of them are approved by the Ministry of Surface Transportation, these should be your choice of completing your courses.

4. Once you have the above courses, the next step is to apply for a Seaman Book or CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate). Home CDS's are preferable, but you could get one with a Bahamas, Panamanian or Marshal Islands. Again addresses and procedures can be found on search engines, to apply for one.

5. Physical fitness is very important. Get into shape. The work is intense and always under a pressurized and confined space environment. Your human body and mind will adapt to this, however you need to simulate the experience wherever possible, get fit and work in confided spaces. You will enjoy the sites, sounds and fragrances of the most beautiful places you'd visit all over the world and that part is for free!

6. Remember whatever or wherever you you worked before, the job at sea has its own set of Rules. Find out about them in advance, so you know what you are getting into. Do not take them lightly and follow them; this way you will be a prepared happy person. Over the years the management of Cruise Ships have figured out how things should be done, so the system is fail proof, hence all you need do is trust and follow it!

7. Complete adherence to Safety procedures is a must. Remember each crew member on board is responsible for not only himself but a set of passengers too. In an emergency the crew member is the one who will guide passengers to safety or keep them away from harm.

8. Discipline at sea is a key factor that must be developed. Self-discipline is a crucial factor for success at sea. Remember, a passenger liner at times can be considered a kind of glorified prison. You have everything that could spoil you, hence your self -discipline levels will be called into effect every step of the way during your life at sea.

Work on board, see the world, develop yourself to be a person of empathy and educate your family about the far out places that they too, have been dreaming off!

HEADER OF CV
In the CV heading write your general information as follows...

CV SKILLS SUMMARY
The Skills Summary section of your CV includes your main skills. You should only include keywords in this section. dIt is not wise to go into lengthy descriptions of your skills, as recruiters want to see well written concise information. The skill summary is also called personal profile.

CV OBJECTIVE
The CV Objective, sometimes also referred to as CV Personal Profile states "What is the next step in my career?" This should be a short, concise statement that informs the employer what kind of position you are looking for. The type of position, the role (e.g. Cabin Steward, Cleaner, Cook, Bar Waiter, Restaurant Waiter, Bus Boy, Sailor etc) should be included as well.

If you are job hunting it is a good idea to have several CV's with different profiles or objectives. For example, you can have a CV for a Cabin Steward and the other for a Bar Waiter. Your 'Cabin Steward' CV can highlight achievements in this area and the CV would be tuned to that particular role in terms of job descriptions and achievements.

Interviews: Rules of engagement

As the economies on earth succum to the forces of recession and unemployment enevitably rises, many people will be forced to face the cold reality of an interview for the first time in years or decades. If you are reading and you need to face an interview in the near future, this article was intended to support you.

Definition

An interview is a discussion between you (a candidate) and an prosective employer to discover whether indeed you are suitable to perform the job role in question.

Needless to say there are certain rules, protcols, etiqueete and conventions to follow at such interviews.

For simplicity we have divided these into 2 practical lists in the style of checklists featuring the main do's and don'ts involved.

What to do

· Dress smartly whatever you do

· Look bright and attentive and demonstrate quality eye contact.

· Speak clearly and confidently.

· Remember that only 7% of the interviewer's opinion of you is formed by what you say, the rest is judged on how you look, act and sound.

· Find out where the venue is beforehand, how to get there and how long it takes to get there.

· Be punctual, but not too early.

· Get your outfit ready the night before.

· Find out what kind of interview it will be so you can prepare.

· Examine the person specification and your CV/application form.

· Think about what type of questions they will ask you.

· Prepare answers for the most common questions; for example, why do you want the job? What are your strengths and areas for development? What are the main tasks in this job?

· Make about 3 or 4 points to comment on for each answer

· Quote real practical examples of when you've used certain skills - just saying you've got a skill isn't enough.

· Take your time when answering the questions, but not too slowly.

· Make sure you understand the question and take your time if you need to think

sell yourself. No-one else is going to! B

· Be positive about yourself and your experiences.

· Prepare some questions to ask at the end, use it as an opportunity to find out more about the role and the Company, although do not ask about money or perks just yet!

· When discussing salary, know your market worth and start by quoting a little higher than this.

· Get feedback on your performance, whether you were successful or not.

· Keep your mobile turned off throughout the interview.

· Treat the interviewers with respect and give them your undivided attentio.

· Keep your answers focused on what you can do for the employer, not what they can do for you.

What not to do

Some of these may sound obvious, but you need to be reminded…

· Do not be late whatever happens.

· Do not swear or use slang words or any kind.

· Do not slouch in your seat or do anything else that makes you look disinterested. Demonstrate good posture and eye contact at all times.

· Do not smoke, it has to be said.

· Do not tell lies, you will be found out in the end and some interviewers are real professionals and can tell! Even if you get the job, your employer can dismiss you if they find out.

· Do not let your nerves show too much. A few nerves are normal but extreme nerves will affect your performance. Use breathing techniques and try to remember that it's not a life and death situation.

· Do not be arrogant or allow the interviewer to perceive this.

· Do not assume you got the job. Nothing turns off employers more than someone who is disrespectful and over-confident.

· Do not discuss controversial topics such as religion, politics and gender relations.

· Do not read from notes or your CV. You should be familiar enough with your own history and the interviewer will expect you to be able to talk about it unprompted.

· Do not criticise former employers or colleagues. Interviewers may mark you down as a troublemaker and a gossip.

· Do not argue with the interviewer, no matter what. Remember to keep things positive!

The above rules apply for most jobs. However, employers in some industries can use more relaxed and informal interviewing techniques. In some creative fields (design and media for example) it may be expected that you turn up for the interview in casual clothes, as that is the dress code in the office. If you're in any doubt, do some research on typical interview technique in your line of work.

Above all, preparation is the key to performing well in interviews. Research the role and organisation and prepare evidence and examples of your skills and competencies.

Above all believe in yourself and focus your energy on a positive outcome.

If you are seriously considering to work on board a Cruise Ship, it is of paramount important that you appreciate the importance of practicing proper Sanitation practices.

The reason for this is that unquestionably the practice of good Sanitation is a top priority for all Cruise Lines due to strict international standards, the most widely recognized of which is U.S.P.H (United States Public Health).

There are in fact 8 significant Public Health challenges on board a Cruise ship. If a Cruise Line fails to overcome these such challenges it could potentially lead to any of the following drastic consequences...

1. Loss of Customers & Sales

2. Increased Insurance Premiums

3. Loss of Prestige & Reputation

4. Lawsuits Resulting in costly Lawyer & Court Fees

5. Lowered Crew Morale

6. Potential Crew Absenteeism

7. Need for Retraining Employees

8. Public Embarrassment

Demonstrating that you fully understand the importance of Sanitation at your Cruise Line interview and that you have been trained or studied the topic in detail, this will give you a significant advantage over other applicants that are not aware of the essential Sanitation issues.
