The first prototype was way too big for the grass jumper so I had to develop two new pieces. I tried to work the resin making super fine layers and as the weather was so sunny and windy today; it took less than 4 hours for the resin to get dried. I was so excited that despite not having gloves I couldn't help taking out the cast of one of the small prototypes. The fibers of the fiberglass hardened with the dry resin resulted to be worse than deathly needles. Now I feel splinter pricks in my fingers, palms and wrists. If you ever work with fiberglass don't be such stupid to manipulate it without gloves (like me).

Horse 1- Hey, listen! … Hey! … What are you doing? …………………………………………..Hello! … Hey! … Walk, don’t run! I want to talk to you and I can’t reach you!

Horse 2- I’m just two steps ahead of you. Come on, it can not be so hard!

Horse 1- Why do you think that? I think that I’ve been half and hour trying to get to you. Well, I just wanted to tell you that you look very handsome… I love you!

Horse 2- Oh! … thaaaaank you! but, Who told you that I am a man?

Horse 1- I’m sorry, I think… Oh! I’m sorry. Are you a woman?

Horse 2- I don’t know. The truth is that I can’t see myself and I can’t see you either. I can’t turn my head… Can you turn your head and look at me?

Horse 1- I don’t need to turn my head to look at you. Are you stupid? You are ahead… A-H-E-A-D! Do you understand? I’m coming from behind. You either will be very handsome… or pretty, but I don’t know if I feel like talking to you… for obvious reasons…

Horse 2- Pardonez moi? Are you calling me…? wait…………………….. Are you calling me…? ……………………………………………………………………… I’ve forgotten… It might be because of exhaustion since I’ve been running so much for so long. Yes, it is the problem… Of course!

Alligator- Why are you discussing?

Horse 1- Are we? And, how do we do that?

Alligator- I’m not sure, but what I do know is that you are a horse’s print on a scarf… I want to tell you that the Horse in front of you will always be ahead of you. And the Horse will never see you. Furthermore, you, the horse that is behind, will always be behind. And you will never run faster than the first one.

Parrot- Hi!…………………………

This is a message for the Alligator and the Horses: we are a pattern printed on scarves and we can’t speak!

These are the first and the last words I’ll say. I won’t talk anymore.

All- Shut up, Parrot!

Talent. Illustrator Cruz has it in spades. It has only been three years since the 30 year old Spaniard started illustrating professionally, and already she has had great success with collaborations and projects all over the world - from fashion designers, to high end hotels and bars. Her designs are sought after for their intricacy, femininity and visual beauty.

Cruz’s most celebrated and popular works are her beautiful portrayals of women, her favourite subject. Elegant and yet immensely complex, her illustrations range from models in couture to exploring the effects of health issues such as SAD syndrome (Seasonal Effective Disorder). Cruz works typically in traditional media, (mainly pencil and acrylic) but has recently expanded into collage and stitching. ‘Its very important for me to treat my images in a very artisan way’ she explains. The most challenging aspect of being an illustrator, she tells me, is finding your own style so that people instantly recognize your work.

As a former award winning fashion designer and stylist, one would expect a main chunk of Cruz’s inspiration to come from the latest trends or the catwalk, but she has a different take on the subject. ‘I love the iconic designs of Cristobal Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen, but my main inspiration is the work by American illustrators Bob Peak and Lucia Lerner in the 1950’s; particularly their book covers, advertisements and magazine drawings. Trends are an interesting aesthetic and a social phenomenon but I don’t think about them when I’m drawing.’ Right now, nothing interests her more than nature, animals, folk and roots music. Music is key to Cruz’s motivation, and she constantly listens to different genres whilst working, changing them according to her mood. She is an avid user of all things digital and online and uses her tumblr account to update her latest nature based inspirations and thoughts. ‘It’s like a journal and data base for me’ she says.

Currently studying a Masters degree in Illustration at the University of the Arts London, Cruz’s introduction to the discipline was during her first degree in fashion design. This, plus her previous job as a fashion designer helped develop her love for the subject and meant she would often go home and draw to help release a growing dissatisfaction. ‘I got frustrated by the way corporate fashion can be; money and sales clip the wings of creativity. So for me, Illustration was the perfect antidote to this, and that’s why I pursued it as my new career.’ Indeed she did. Moving from Madrid to New York, she studied Illustration at the School of Visual Arts, followed by moving to London.

When Cruz lives in a new environment, she ‘absorbs information and tries to assimilate it to dump it later on paper.’ Her ability to do this explains the variety of her pieces and is key to her success as an artist. In the next 5 years, Cruz wants to move her headquarters back to Madrid and ‘live from 3 to 6 months every year in a different city of the world’. Wow! that’s a plan. Right now, she is working on a collaboration with a London based Finnish animator, and the artwork for a British rock band record. Cruz believes that everyone is creative but ‘Hard work, honesty and love for what you do will be the difference between you succeeding and not.’ Amen to that.
