A semi with 2500 pounds of chipper knives just left here! The processor is already packed full of slitters from 3M and circular blades from Armstrong Ceiling in Macon, GA. We’ll have to wait and run the knives on Monday. It’s great to have this kind of problem! The company who sent the chippers, asked to remain anonymous, commented their chipper knives have fewer nicks, show no signs of burning and triples the life which saves labor and time. Cryo processing increases abrasive wear resistance, raises the tensile strength and decreases brittleness with only one permanent treatment. CryoPlus also stocks 4 sizes of cryo treated chipper knives which are setting new benchmarks for productivity, toughness, durability and strength in the chipper industry.

Two articles about cryogenically treating maple wood bats came across my desk yesterday (links below). After reading both of them I thought I’d call one of my chipper knife customers, who is one of the leading bat makers. They own their own forests and mills that produce the wood they use for the bats. They use ash, red oak and maple. Their hard maple bats are especially highly-regarded. They have the only process in the US which can dry the wood in 8 days instead of 30 days to 6 months. In 2004 CryoPlus, tested cryo treating ash and maple bats with them. After extensive testing, they concluded there was no reason to believe the cryo would prevent the bats from cracking. Now, the subject has resurfaced.

James Cortez and Greg Kendra claim the bats are 25% stronger after the cryogenic treatment. They’ve filed for a patent to treat wooden baseball bats at a controlled time/temperature cycle, “thereby relieving the internal residual stresses of said wooden baseball bats, similar to the process of tempering metals.” This will increase the safety of the players and fans when maple bats are used. When breakage does occur, sharply pointed pieces of wood shards fly across the field.

To date, the Major League Baseball has not responded to the request for allowing cryo treated bats. In the two articles there are conflicting comments about this. “They’ve filed paperwork with Major League Baseball to have their bats certified for use, but say they have heard nothing back from the league.” “The CK Process® in no way adversely alters the bat and the bat remains within the current regulations and specifications required under Major League Baseball.” I guess time will tell whether the Major League Baseball will allow it or not. If they do, that’s going to give the cryogenic treatment a lot more credibility!

I would like to welcome everyone to the brand new CryoPlus.com! Our web developer has been working hard on this new layout for a while now and it’s finally here. The old website was a generic template that we purchased many years ago and had customized for our needs. As the years passed, it became clear to us that it was old and outdated. This new site has been designed from scratch to give it more of a modern feel.

Besides the complete makeover to the site, we have relocated our blog to this site. It will be easier to control and will have the same look and feel as the main site. So, look forward to many interesting posts after we get settled in.

I hope you enjoy the new site and if you experience any issues with the site, please let us know so that they may be addressed as soon as possible.

The Sawlex attracted buyers and sellers from 30 different states for the Great Firewood Processor Competition and Great Portable Sawmill Shoot-out. It was a great show!

I got there Thursday afternoon and searched for a local winery-Forks of Cheat Winery. That evening they were sponsoring a Wild Game Cookout as a fund raiser for the WV State Rifle Team. They just won the National Championships. It was $40 a ticket for all of the wine, beer, wild game dishes and desserts you could eat. I ate everything from pheasant, black bear, moose, deer, to salmon and many more! It was all delicious!
