The DC Center for the LGBT Community is happy to be partnering with local activist Dee Curry to put on Solutions for Wellness 2016!

Solutions for Wellness 2016 aims to establish dialogue between health care providers, community activists, and members of the public living with HIV, mental health issues, and substance abuse. We also seek to highlight and uplift the experiences and insights of marginalized individuals and communities in the DC area who may also be struggling with HIV, mental health, or substance abuse. The conference will take place on Thursday, September 22nd from 9am-4pm in the Public Welfare Foundation's Lankford Auditorium.

The conference will consist of multiple workshops lead by community-based organizers and health care providers, and will also feature a panel of individuals living with HIV, mental health issues, and substance abuse and those who can help them find solutions.

Our goal is to catalyze collective action that will improve the quality of care for persons living with these mental and physical issues in Washington, DC. We hope that this endeavor will mark the beginning of a concerted effort by local governments, community-based organizations, and community advocates to create community-inspired prevention and treatment strategies to improve the lives of individuals impacted by HIV, mental illness, and substance abuse.

The Public Welfare Foundation is wheelchair accessible. If you need any form of accomodations, please let us know at supportdesk@thedccenter.org or call at (202) 682-2245.

The Facebook event can be found here.

We're excited to begin another round of the successful Freedom from Smoking program. It is a friendly, structured, and effective 7-week smoking cessation program developed by the American Lung Association.

Housing the program here at the DC Center, we aim to help LGBTQ folks quit smoking in an environment that is not only supportive of their efforts but that also addresses specific obstacles unique to our community. Quitting is hard but with access to quitting resources and support from peers and the DC Center facilitators, it is that much easier! The first class is July 20th at 7 pm at the DC Center (2000 14th St NW).

Email Outtoquit@thedccenter.org to register or click here.

In light of the recent murders in Orlando, and to support those who have been affected and traumatized by violence now and in the past, The DC
Center is launching a biweekly support group focused on providing a safe space for LGBTQ individuals to process the effect that violence, on both a large and small scale, can have on all of us. The group will also provide a forum for discussion and education about the cycle of violence, trauma, vicarious victimization, violence prevention, and the dynamics of power and control. The overarching aim of this group will focus on providing support to LGBT individuals and survivors of violence with therapeutic
techniques and tools that empower its members not only to heal from
violence, but to help stop cycles of violence in their communities.

The support group will run every other week, beginning Friday, June
24th from 6 PM - 7 PM at The DC Center (2000 14th Street, NW, Suite
105). Please contact The DC Center's Staff Social Worker, Sam Shinberg,
LGSW, at samantha@thedccenter.org to sign up. Please also keep in mind that space is limited, so please contact Sam as quickly as possible to reserve a space in the group. Thank you!

Thank you!
