<p>The aim of the paper is to test the candidate&#8217;s ability to read and understand serious discursive prose, and to express his ideas clearly and correctly in English/Indian language concerned.</p>
<p>The pattern of questions would be broadly as follows:-</p>
<p>(i) Comprehension of given passages.<br />
(ii) Precis Writing<br />
(iii) Usage and Vocabulary<br />
(iv) Short Essay</p>
<p><strong> INDIAN LANGUAGES</strong></p>

(v) Translation from English to the Indian language and vice-versa.</p>
<p>Note 1 : The Papers on Indian Languages and English will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard and will be of qualifying nature only. The marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for ranking.</p>
<p>Note 2 : The candidates will have to answer the English and Indian Languages papers in English and the respective Indian language (except where translation is involved).</p>

The Indian Customs and Central Excise Service (IC&amp;CES) is mainly concerned with couple of main aspects i.e Customs and Excise. While the official of the Customs are concerned with the checking and levy of duty on taxable goods imported into the country <a href="http://www.csatforum.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/csatforum.com_icces.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-283" title="csatforum.com_icces" src="http://www.csatforum.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/csatforum.com_icces-300x214.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="214" /></a>and the Excise department is involved with the taxation of goods manufactured within the country. Young and energetic Probationers to the customs service begin their field training at Madras while the excise officers may start service in any metropolitan town. Custom officers are posted at international airports and ports like, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Goa, etc. They could be posted at other border and coastal towns. The most important and main responsibilities of the official of this department is to levy customs&#8217; duty on goods, which are brought to the country. Officers of the Customs &amp; excise cadres are liable to transfer from one to another, depending upon their experience and the importance of the work. Because of their services to the Nation and importance of the duties they are performing, even sometimes by putting their life they are very cherished and respectful professional and thus the desire to be one of them in the youth is already there.</p>
<p>The members of this service begin their Career as Assistant Collectors of Customs/Central Excise and may rise up in the hierarchy to the level of Chief Collector of Customs.</p>
