Everyone has mornings where they seem to have left their brains behind, and this was one of mine.

The morning run of String Kihon got me 13/14, with my old nemesis, Join, coming back to bite me. There is a static method on the class string that does exactly what I wanted. Running the Join method on the instance (foo.String e.g.) does something entirely different. Confusing! But that sort of thing is what these exercises should be about. �This confusion, though, meant that I did not even attempt the other 2 kihon (side note: what is the plural?).

The brain finally engaged somewhere during the day�s work on our adventure program.� We made a Yell command that yanked the text uppercase, and turned it red, since, as Kate pointed out, yells are red.� We reset the foreground color back to default at the end.�

Next came the more vital change to the program: we broke each command out into its own .cs file, and created an enumeration for our commands that of type �ICommand�, following the convention that enumerations start with Cap I, and named it commands.� ICommand, in turn only runs IsValid, and Execute. The real work happened with the following change to Program.cs:

Let�s take this apart from the inside, out:

1, c is defined, and set with the value of the result of running IsValid on input via a Lambda Construction.

2, cmd is defined and set with the value of the first or default of the commands enumeration

3, If IsValid comes back false, c is set to null, so commands.FirstOrDefault also returns null, so cmd is set to null. We test for this, and if cmd = null, then we set cmd to defaultCommand.

4, Finally, we run the Execute method on cmd, passing in the parameter input.

After that, we created 2 more commands, Dance and Wave, which basically follow the same construction:

2 things to note here:

First, the word void means that this method does not return a value to whatever called it.

Second, Writeline(String.Format()) This syntax allows us to plug values, such as the value of output, above, into the writeline statement where the {} are. With just 1 plug in, like we have now, it doesn�t appear to gain us anything over a �blah � + foo + � more blah.� construction, but I am confident that having several different things we want plugged in will make this construction seem more attractive.

My homework for Tuesday was to write 5 more emote commands, and run all 3 kihons. The commands I added were Angry, Clap, Bonk, Glare, & Panic.

String Kihon

For reasons shrouded in mystery, Ft Worth DNUG was pushed from the 18^th to the 25^th Now it conflicts with Dallas ASP.net UG. Thankfully, Tim found out about it early enough to let me know, so I gathered my kit from my house, and headed to his for a training session, rather than sit in an empty Justins parking lot.

We were using a site called GITHub tonight which, as you might imagine, interacts with GIT. This means that you can have all your people use a web site as a source repository. Awesome for a distributed development force.

He also introduced a series of short exercises which he called a “Kihon”. These are dills on various common functions inside the .net framework. These are consepts & commands used so commonly by developers that they don’t think about them. Seeing this gave me more hope for getting past the first and highest hurdle of this project. I’ve worked with Tim before, and it is often hard to explain the vast vistas of my ignorance. Clearly he has come to some peace with it, and is less likely to consider it some moral failing on my part.

The first kihon is all about string manipulation. Of the 14, I got 9 done in the time allotted, and 3 of those I made 3 lines of code, where 1 would have sufficed. As I write this, I see that he has updated this file – apparently, one was broken. So, I’ll pull down the most recent version before I repeat it.

GiveCamp

Dallas GiveCamp: A chance to rub elbows with some of DFW’s strongest programmers, see them in action, and burnish my own resume a little in the process. Tim had to practically drag me along, pointing out that since I was working for free (less meals & snacks), there’s no way I could be less use to the project than my pay.

Turns out I should not have worried. As I met my team, there were several different skill levels present, and one, James, was a recent IT convert like myself. Also, since we were going to working in a new CRM that nobody had really seen before, everyone was going to be bumping around a good deal and asking each other lots of questions. Between that, and a quick explanation of my utter n00b status, folks seemed happy enough to work with me & nobody got frustrated with my pestering questions.

Friday afternoon started in a whirl. Tim likes to say he was useless that day, though his backpack was indispensable. Quickly accessing the needs of the project, the skills of his team, & the limitations of the local internet access , he actually put us on Saturday morning’s problems a whole day ahead of every other team. Tim also became our team’s IT manager for the event, turning his beast of a laptop into both a local network hotspot, and a server so that we could install Sitefinity 4, and actually get to work.

… Or could we?

Much has been made over the mistakes Telerik made in launching Sitefinity 4 and the subsequent bad taste it left in the mouths of hundreds of the most influential developers in the US. As a CMS, however, its drag-&-drop nature does lead to a smoother learning curve. Considering that the last time I used a CMS there wasn’t yet a term for it, this was a very good thing.

I liked how it allowed us to give CSS development to one member once we had a flimsiest notion of what the style would be, by allowing those of us developing pages to apply a template to our pages. The style would be developed on the template. Sitefinity pushed our widgets & content blocks around to conform to the template. As it changed, our pages updated. I suppose that’s the point of CSS in the first place, but this made it neat and clear.

There’s even a way to design new widgets & merge them into your Sitefinity process. Don’t ask me how; the evangelist even admitted the process was arcane. Sounds like they need a new widget widget.

Saturday saw me actually learning & taking a problem apart. Boy, was that messy! I assumed that a zip file that had all the GiveCamp branding files for media releases actually had all the GiveCamp branding files for media releases. Silly me. I must have lost an hour figuring out how come they didn’t get recognized, and blamed the easy scapegoat, rather than looking at what I was sending up. Still, I had a good looking media page when I was done: some job satisfaction.

Sunday, I went through & checked the new site to make certain that its links were pointing to the new site, and were relative, not absolute. Most were, save where I’d done it wrong.

Socially, This was a good weekend. I came off like a newbie not a n00b, and think I gave a good acquittal of myself. Tim’s bringing of Dominion was a hit. I tied once, but a poor strategy left me with too many cards in late game on the second. I crashed and burned.

Terms I needed to look up:

WCF: Windows Communication Foundation: a system that allows for asynchronous communication. A simple example is a chat program that isn’t constantly sending messages, but is capable of it whenever either side needs to.

RIA: Rich Internet Application: an app that is designed to run in a browser window. Flash games come to mind.

GIT Commands

GIT is a LINUX-based source control program. It uses a command prompt interface, and reminds me of UNIX commands for the university mainframe in the early 90’s.

Not only does source control allow for project collaboration between developers, it functions as a save point to which one can return if an experimental programming technique proves unsatisfactory. Basically, you make a real change to a program, go ahead and check it in before making the next. Under no case should you go for more than a day without checking in, and maybe twice a day might be smarter.

Some commands I’ve already encountered:

git init Initializes GIT tracking for the directory & its subdirectories. Do this once per project.
git status shows outstanding non-committed work.
git log --oneline shows a “friendly” version of the log. By itself, log looks like a dir or ls command.
git add . add the current files tracked. Only tracked files can be checked in.
git c change focus to branch
git commit -a -m commits tracked work with as a title.
git checkout -b created a branch from which to make changes titled .
git checkout change to .
git branch List all branches. The current one will be highlighted.
git merge merge into the current branch.
Git rebase Master grab changes from Master since the last rebase, then apply my changes to the current branch.

Thus, the correct method for safely updating your changes to the branch Master would be:

git add .

git commit -a -m

git rebase Master

git c Master

git merge
