Event Description: In 2008, Ottawa residents began discussing the possibility of changing municipal by-laws to allow raising chickens within the city. In recent years, by-laws in several Canadian cities have changed in favour of raising chickens. Some argue that any effort to sustain food sources—including raising hens for their eggs—is a basic human right. Others argue that the potential health and sanitation risks outweigh the benefits. At this Café, expect a discussion that explores all perspectives, including current by-laws, health and safety considerations for both birds and humans, and tales from those who have first-hand experience raising hens. Have you ever raised chickens, or eaten eggs laid by a local hen? What do you think—should raising chickens in the city of Ottawa be permitted or not? Join us for drinks, discussion, and debate.
Event Description: A lecture on the writing of Italian Chemist Primo Levi (1919-1987)

Presentation by Victor Snieckus, Professor and Bader Chair at Queen’s University in Kingston, Dr. Sniekus is a world-renowned synthetic chemist with long-standing experience in solving challenging synthetic problems for pharmaceutical and agrochemical companies worldwide.

Primo Levi, a trained chemist became a major literary figure in Italy. Having spent a year in Auschwitz, he wrote a number of highly praised memoirs. His book of short stories, The Periodic Table, published in 1975 is a collection of short pieces featuring episodes from Levi’s life, all related in some way to one of the chemical elements. At an event organised by the London’s Royal Institution on October 19, 2006, it was voted the best science book ever written.

To mark the International Year of Chemistry, the Canada Science and Technology Museum invites you to a reading, interpretation and dialogue based on this famous book.
Event Description: Scientific and technological discoveries have changed the world. Many discoveries — such as penicillin, vaccines, and electricity — have been highly beneficial to humans. Others, however, have had negative repercussions, with ongoing and serious consequences for people and the environment: we now live with a hole in the ozone layer, pesticides in our foods, and superbugs. Will new discoveries be for better or for worse? Although scientific advances offer hope towards solving some of our current global challenges, can science hope to patch up all the world’s ills? Or will science contribute to more catastrophic results, taking the planet to the point of no return? Are the potential consequences serious enough that we should put the brakes on research? And how can we ensure that new research is and will be used wisely? Do you have an opinion? Join us for drinks, discussion, and debate.

Café Scientifique is a forum where, for the price of a coffee or glass of wine, adults can get together and talk about recent - and sometimes controversial - developments in science and technology. The Canada Science and Technology Museum moderates the discussion between invited experts and the general public. Lively discussions guaranteed!

Trees are amazing! They provide us with recreational spaces, shade, oxygen, clean air and water, fruit, nuts, and wood products such as paper, furniture and housing. These benefits are well known. But did you know that literally thousands of products are made from trees? Many of them could surprise you! Join Jean Hamel, Vice-President of the Pulp and Paper Division of FPInnovations, to learn about the incredible things we can extract from our forests.
Event Description: On Sunday July 31st , 11-year-old Nicholas Zuger will share his love of the night sky with other star gazers and passionate dark sky followers as part of Nuit Noire, Cube Gallery’s month-long festival of the Night Sky. Everyone is invited to hear this young astronomer’s passionate story and see the images he’s taken of his experiences. Nicholas has been interested in astronomy since the age of five. Gazing into the night sky with his dad, Ivan, when the family went camping in Algonquin and Killarney provincial parks, Nicholas loved “the wonder and discovery… the nebulae, the galaxies, the wow factor.” His dad bought him his first telescope two years ago and since then Nicholas has successfully run his school’s Astronomy club which now has over 20 participants. He also belongs to 3 local astronomy groups. In his spare time he attends star parties, astronomy events and holds his own observing sessions with his telescope. His other interests include canoeing, sports, music and computers. Sponsored by the Canada Science and Technology Museum in partnership with Cube Gallery.
Event Description: A recent story in Time magazine about the relative merits of conventional and organic produce featured a curious quote from a professor of nutrition education at Columbia University. When asked if she preferred butter or margarine, she replied “I would rather trust a cow than a chemist.” Unfortunately such negative comments about chemistry are not unusual these days as the media often focuses on “toxic chemicals” in our air, water, food and even in our blood. The truth is that chemicals are neither safe nor dangerous. There are safe ways to use chemicals and dangerous ways to use chemicals. It is time to build a dike of scientific reality to stem the rising tide of chemophobia. This lecture is offered in celebration of the International Year of Chemistry in collaboration with the Chemical Institute of Canada. Admission is FREE
