YouTube Gets A New Look

The new look for the videos.

Changes are always good. YouTube today launched a new look. The new look is greatly simplified. It’s basically the same layout except that ratings, and other features are now hover over which makes the layout much cleaner. As such the comments stack much better. The most noticeable difference is that the rating stars are now a simple like or dislike.

Personally I like the new look because that way the comment ratings don’t hog the whole page. As a result the page is much more cleaner and allows you to focus on the video better.

Twitter Puts An End To Phishing On Twitter

Phishing (fake urls) and/or spam is never fun when you are on a social network. They can steal your password, take your personal info, take over your computer, pile you in spam/virus’s a mile high, and just annoy you. Well it’s no surprise Twitter has had enough of it.

“Today, we’re launching a new service to protect users that strikes a major blow against phishing and other deceitful attacks. By routing all links submitted to Twitter through this new service, we can detect, intercept, and prevent the spread of bad links across all of Twitter. Even if a bad link is already sent out in an email notification and somebody clicks on it, we’ll be able keep that user safe.” – Twitter Blog.

For the time being it will be only for direct messages, and email notifications. As such you may notice the url being shortened to twt.tl. It’s nice Twitter is taking a stand on phishing urls since nearly every major event is swarming with them, or tons of users get hacked and start storming you with spam. Slowly but surely this service will be rolled out.

New Report Shows IE8 Blocks 3 Times The Amount Of Social Malware Than Other Browsers

Interesting. A new report states that IE8 blocks up to 80% of social malware. That means IE8 blocks 3-80 times more social malware then Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Opera.

While that does not mean that IE8 is safe, or solid it does mean that on average IE8 will block more. IE (7+8) has a 50% market share. IE7 blocks phishing pages (fake pages) like the other browsers. IE8 although is unique in that it will block direct .exe downloads (or otherwise) that it detects are malware. This does help users from downloading malware since IE8 uses it’s malware definitions to detect new threats.

It is surprising to see very low block rates for Firefox, and Opera. I would come to expect more from those browsers (especially more than <1%!). The report shows that most browsers (the exception of Opera) are gaining the battle in the social engineered malware war.

iTunes Store Suffering From Connection Issues

Earlier today the iTunes store was having some connection issues.

For users its either loading slowly, or not at all.

Naturally this is an unexpected downtime since there has been no warning nor any explanation.

So if you get a 504 (unknown error) you are not alone.

The issue seems to be seems to be fixed.

Apple iPad Launching April 3rd To 12 Countries

The Apple iPad launching April 3rd, 2010.

It’s great news that it’s only a month away!

The Apple iPad will be available for pre-order March 12th for U.S. customers.

In the meantime it will be launching in the following countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and UK in late April (production delays).

No plans for any middle east countries (india, etc).

How To: Skip Those Annoying DVD Trailers

Being a legal purchaser (or renter) of DVD’s, or Blu-Ray can be annoying.

You have to deal with all those warnings, then you are forced to wait for the trailers to pass.

While you can speed them up there is a much easier way.

The technique is press: stop, stop, play.

This will have you show up at the DVD menu like you wanted!

RealDVD is no more

Today a verdict in U.S. courts has made the sale of Real DVD (it allows you to copy dvd’s with the DRM), permanently disabled.

While there has been no sale of the software since 2008, it’s now final.

It’s no surprise that MPAA sent out there lawyers to stop this.

Real networks also has to pay 4.5 million to studios as reimbursement,

“(Real’s testimony) made it clear that Real was out to deliver to consumers a product that people wanted to see,” von Lohmann said. “I think the message this sends is if you get into the business of enabling consumers to do with DVDs what they’ve long done with CDs, you’ll get sued out of the business. I think that’s bad news for consumers. What that means is that if you want to create a digital back-up of your movies, you have to pay for that a second time on iTunes.” -CNET

Opera 10.5 Released To Windows Users

Opera today released “its fastest browser yet”.

Opera 10.50 has a 7 times faster JavaScript engine, private browsing support and (finally!) support for Windows Aero features including lists in Windows 7.

Plus the interface has been extremely overhauled (looks a bit like Firefox 3.7).

Mac and Linux versions will be coming soon.

Meanwhile why not try the new opera version?
