RAYMONDA
in the ARTSCAPE Opera House

Raymonda, who is betrothed to Jean de Brienne, is celebrating her birthday.  Abderam arrives and tries to court Raymonda.   He and his accomplices abduct her and take her to his harem. Jean arrives and there is a duel. Abderman is killed.  Act 3 celebrates the marriage of the two lovers with much fanfare and dancing.

The choreography is that of NORMAN FURBER and the ballet will be accompanied by the CAPE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA. It will also feature international guest artists, among them Dirk Weyershausen of the Norwegian National Ballet

Raymonda was incorporated into the CAPAB ballet’s repertoire in 1977, with choreography by Alfred Rodrigues and designs by Peter Cazalet. On 10th August, 1980, David Poole and Norman Furber hosted a lecture demonstration at the Nico Opera House in anticipation of Furber’s new production of the ballet, and on 2nd September, 1980, Furber’s re-choreographed version was added to the CAPAB repertoire. It was reproduced five times subsequently until 1996, which is the last time Cape Town audiences saw the ballet.

Peter Pan, the ballet, was last seen in Cape Town in 1981, choreographed by the late Pamela Chrimes for the University of Cape Town Ballet School. The 2012 version will be produced and choreographed by the CTCB’s Artistic Director, Robin van Wyk, whose previous works for younger dancers include Robin Hood (2005), Beauty and the Beast (2006) and James Bond (2007) with the CTCB, and The Ugly Duckling (2008), Alice in Wonderland (2009) and The Sleeping Princess (2011) for Port Elizabeth’s Friendly City Youth Ballet and The East London Youth Ballet.
Additional choreography will be done by Lauren Rogers, soloist with the CTCB, and a regular teacher on the CTCB’s Amy Biehl and Young Male Dancer Development projects.

Cape Town City Ballet presents Giselle for 3 performances, on 29 and 30 June, 2012, at the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown, accompanied by KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Naum Rousine.

The CTCB’s ballerina, Laura Bosenberg, is partnered, on Friday, 29 June at 19h00, by Thomas Thorne, who scored a major triumph in his first appearance as Albrecht recently in the ARTSCAPE Opera House, while Kim Vieira and Daniel Szybkowski will dance the roles of Giselle and Albrecht on Saturday, 30 June at 19h00.

The role of Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis, will be dance at both these performances by Port Elizabethian, Angela Hansford. Another dancer from the same city, Lauren Rogers, dances this role on Saturday 30 June at 11h00, while Hilarion is interpreted by Xola Putye and Ivan Boonzaaier.

The performance on Saturday, 30 June at 11h00, features the debut of Kirstel Jensen in the role of Giselle, supported by Xola Putye as Albrecht.

Giselle is a ballet in two acts with a libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Theophile Gautier. The music was composed by Adophe Adam, and the original choreography was created by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. The librettist took his inspiration from a poem by Heinrich Heine, and the ballet tells the story of a peasant girl named Giselle, whose ghost, after her premature death, protects her lover from the vengeance of a group of evil spirits called Wilis, female spirits who, jilted before their wedding day, rise from their graves at night and seek revenge upon men by dancing them to death.

The ballet was first presented at the Paris Opéra’s Salle le Peletier on 28 June 1841 with Carlotta Grisi as Giselle, Lucien Petipa as Albrecht, and Jean Coralli as Hilarion. In South Africa, the first performance of the ballet was presented in 1947 by the South African National Ballet, previously the Ballet Club, with Alexis Rassine & Olive James in the leading roles.

In 1949, Anton Dolin produced the ballet for the South African National Ballet, who joined forces with the UCT Ballet Co for the occasion. Dolin partnered Alicia Markova, and they danced in Cape Town’s Alhambra Theatre. It was again produced by the UCT Ballet Co in 1955, featuring Alexis Rassine and Nadia Nerina,

The first time the ballet was danced by the newly-formed CAPAB Ballet Co was in 1965. David Poole created his version of the ballet in 1972 in the Nico Malan Opera House, when the leading roles were danced by Phyllis Spira and Eduard Greyling, with Elizabeth Triegaardt as Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis, and John Simons in the pivotal role of Hilarion – a version that was reproduced eleven times for the CAPAB Ballet Co.

The Cape Town City Ballet has performed Poole’s version eight times since 1997, produced by Elizabeth Triegaardt, by kind permission of Owen Murray, who himself danced both Albrecht and Hilarion during his long career with the CAPAB Ballet Co.

 One of the world’s foremost partnerships, Daria Klimentová and Vadim Muntagirov, both Principals with the English National Ballet, thrilled you again, as they did in Swan Lake last year, with their matchless portrayals of Giselle and Albrecht.

 Maxime Quiroga, from the Vienna State Ballet, who had us jumping to our feet at the Prague Scholarship Awards last year, partnered the CTCB’s Laura Bosenberg at three performances of this greatest of all classical ballets.
They had audiences in tears with their passionate portrayals of the leading roles.

 Our own Senior Principal Ballerina, Megan Swart, decided to hang up her pointe shoes at the end of this season of Giselle. Megan had been with the Co for 15 years, and with her exquisite feet and legs, made the roles of the Girl in MacMillan’s ballet, Solitaire, his pas de deux from Concerto and the title roles of The Firebird and Carmen entirely her own. She was partnered by our Principal male dancer, Thomas Thorne, who came into his own with his sympathetic partnering and sincere interpretation of Albrecht. 

The new partnership of Kim Vieira, previously from the Dutch National Ballet, and Swedish-born Daniel Szybkowski, in one performance of the ballet, caused a stir and had the audience ready for thie next big roles.
The season was accompanied by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Graham Scott, a ballet conductor of note with experience dating back to his days of conducting the CAPAB Ballet Co in their finest performances.

NIGHT & DAY – a Cole Porter Ballet

The music of Cole Porter, the legendary American songwriter of the 20^th Century, is simply made for dancing. The fun, style, drama and wit on Porter’s lyrics, combined with memorable melodies and his innate sense of the possibilities and complexities of rhythm, make an ideal accompaniment for the glamour and variety of dance. Whether you want to swing it, rock it, jazz it up or slow it down, there’s a Porter song to provide the soundtrack. 

Despite personal setbacks later in life – including an appalling horse-riding accident, ill health and the death in 1954 of his beloved Linda – Porter continued to create some of the most popular songs in the Western repertoire. Songs like I get a Kick out of You, You’re the Top and Begin the Beguine ensured his inclusion in The Great American Songbook, alongside celebrated composers such as Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and Rodgers and Hart. 

To celebrate Porter’s versatility and enduring appeal, the CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET is putting its own dynamic spin on some of his best-loved songs. With classical ballet, jazz and tap dance, the CTCB is turning Let’s Misbehave, Too Darn Hot and Every Time We Say Goodbye, among many others, into showstoppers. Be it a lively ensemble number danced by the whole company or a romantic encounter for two, the music of Cole Porter, written with the same energy and verve as he lived his life, dances on……………….Deborah Louw

This time, the CTCB is joined by one of the world’s foremost dance partnerships, Daria Klimentová and Vadim Muntagirov, both Principals with the English National Ballet. Another guest artist for the season is Maxime Quiroga, from the Vienna State Opera Ballet, who will partner the CTCB’s Laura Bosenberg, debuting as Giselle, at three performances. Daria, Vadim and Maxime all featured in the CTCB’s sold-out season of Swan Lake in August, 2011, and their presence will most certainly enhance this season of Giselle.
The CTCB’s own ballerina, Megan Swart, is partnered this season by Thomas Thorne in his first appearance as Albrecht, while relative newcomers, Kim Vieira and Daniel Szybkowski, will debut in the roles of Giselle and Albrecht at one performance.

This timeless classic will be mounted for the Friendly City Youth Ballet by the Artistic Director of the CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET, Robin van Wyk, and performed in the Port Elizabeth Opera House from 14 to 16 July, 2011.

Dancers from Port Elizabeth and surrounds will appear on stage with professional dancers, giving them a taste of what it is to be a professional dancer. From the CTCB, Angela Hansford, Celeste George, Alexander Vivian-Riding, Warren May, Craig Pedro and Benjamin Klein will swell the ranks of the Friendly City Youth Ballet to produce the magic and mystery of this challenging balletic masterpiece.

The greatest of all classical ballets ever choreographed, this masterpiece embodies mystery and romance portrayed in sublime, ethereal movement. Tchaikovsky’s score transports the viewer and inspires the dancers in their portrayal of this tale of love’s triumph over evil.

The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET will be performing this work at the prestigious National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in July, 2011, accompanied by the Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Naum Rousine
