Successful businesses have strong human resource practices, and skilled and motivated employees who enjoy on-going professional development opportunities. In light of anticipated labour shortages, these consultations are being conducted to ensure emerit resources remain relevant and are offered in the right format, to meet the needs of these businesses. Each meeting will have 12-20 participants, two-thirds of whom have never used emerit products.

Your input at this consultation will help improve the quality of the resources offered to the sector by the CTHRC and allow Canada’s tourism industry to become more flexible in meeting changing competitive demands.

For more information, or to reserve your spot at one of the following meetings, please contact Calum MacDonald at 613-231-6949 ext. 255, or email cmacdonald@cthrc.ca

Toronto – Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 (12pm-2pm)

Vancouver – Wednesday March 16th, 2011 (12pm – 2pm)

Calgary – Thursday, March 17th, 2011 (12pm – 2pm)

Montreal – Thursday, April 14th, 2011 (12pm – 2pm)

Halifax – Monday, April 25th, 2011 (12pm – 2pm)

Moncton – Friday, April 29th, 2011 (12pm – 2pm)

Saskatoon – Monday, May 16th, 2011 (12pm – 2pm)

Winnipeg – Thursday, May 19th, 2011 (12pm – 2pm)

St. John’s – Wednesday, May 25th, 2011 (12pm – 2pm)

Food and Beverage certification program validation meeting

The CTHRC is currently revising the Certification Examinations for Bartenders, Banquet Servers, and Food and Beverage Servers to ensure that they stay up to date with changes that are occurring in the industry.

The Industry Validation Committee (IVC) members play a key role in approving all testing materials and setting the standards. They must have a thorough understanding of the standards and the requirements of one of either the Bartender, Banquet Server, or Food and Beverage Server occupations.

Industry Validation Committee Meetings

Participate in a 2.5-day meeting in Ottawa January 10-12, 2011 to review and approve the test item banks and performance tools as well as set the passmark

Over recent years, jobs based routine cognitive tasks have been prime candidates for computerisation and outsourcing – mirroring earlier declines in the demand for manual skills. Conversely, recent trends show sharp increases in the demand for complex communication skills and non-routine analytical skills. These trends pose a major challenge for education systems: the skills that are easiest to teach and test are the ones that are most rapidly disappearing from the labour markets of advanced economies.

How are governments anticipating the demand for skills, how do they establish effective ways to communicate the demand for new skills from those who use them to those who produce them, and how do they translate this into the design of effective learning organisations and instructional methods?

What education and training policies have been introduced or are being considered to ensure quality and efficiency in learning provision and equity in access to learning opportunities, how are governments building coalitions with the business sector and social investors to resource the rising demand for better skills and how are they establishing sustainable approaches to who should pay for what, when, where and how much?

How could an international skills strategy contribute most effectively to national policy development? How can the OECD provide support to national skill strategies?

Background reading

Learning for Jobs – OECD Policy Reviews of Vocational Education and Training (VET)
..... Initial report
..... Pointers

Markets in Education

Innovation Strategy for Education and Training

CTHRC National Meeting- June

Location: Miramichi, NB at the Rodd Miramichi River

June 28:
Meetings: Product Quality Committee (PQC) , HRO Executive
& Co-ordinator Working Group

June 29:
Meetings: CTHRC Board & Co-ordinator Working Group

The details/RSVP will be to sent out via email to meeting participants.

For more information, please contact mquail@cthrc.ca.

Certification Validation Meeting (International Competency Standards for Event Management)

The CTHRC and industry stakeholders are currently developing a competency-based certification program based on its International Competency Standards for Event Management.

These standards reflect the knowledge and skills required when managing any type of event, e.g., meetings, conventions, fairs, sports events, special events, trade shows, corporate marketing events etc. 'International' means that these standards are being recognized in more than 1 country.

Members of the validation committee, an international group of event management industry experts from 8 countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, South Africa, UK, and United States) will meet for three days to validate the assessment instruments which were previously pilot tested in 11 countries with 80 events practitioners.

To join the project visit the CTHRC's community portal by following the link below.

The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC), our Provincial partners, and The Conference Board of Canada will be hosting a series of focus groups across Canada from late October until early December.

Labour issues have eased considerably since the fall of 2008, mainly because of the economic downturn. Tourism employers are having an easier time filling jobs with qualified candidates this year, but this “shift in power” is unlikely to last once the economy recovers. Meanwhile, economic conditions remain volatile, and their effect on tourism businesses continues to evolve. We would like feedback from tourism owners and operators, to help us address these challenges.

Please join us to discuss what lies ahead for the tourism labour market, and the strategies required to recruit and retain your most important asset—your employees.
On August 10th and 11th, a global Task Force comprised of members of Meeting Professionals International and representatives of the CTHRC will meet in Toronto, Ontario.

This private meeting marks an important step in developing a Body of Knowledge (BOK) for Meeting Professionals International. To support this initiative MPI has invited the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council to facilitate the meeting.

The task force will focus on existing curricula and occupational analyses including the emerit Event Manager - International Occupational Standards. During the two-day meeting the task force members will explore how the IEMS can be leveraged to develop the MPI BOK.

About IEMS:

IEMS integrates the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to be considered competent at managing a variety of events in an international context at an expert level. Such events include and are not limited to festivals, conventions, political events, trade shows or exhibitions, fairs, sports events, corporate events or private events that mark rites of passage. In turn, IEMS meets the needs of a more widely-defined group of practitioners, learners, educators, governments, and professional associations, crossing the boundaries of jurisdictions and event disciplines. Developed “by the industry, for the industry,” these standards represent the collective expertise of industry professionals and thought leaders who collectively work in more than 15 countries in this occupation.

The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council will host a Culinary advisory meeting in Ottawa on March 12-13, 2009. This meeting will bring together more than 20 experts in the field to discuss the progress to date and next steps of the Cooks Qualifications Framework project. This advisory meeting will also explore opportunities for future collaborative work between industry, apprenticeship and education.

 Background:

Qualifications frameworks are an important instrument in creating a balance between the supply and demand of knowledge, skills and competencies in the labour market.

The Cooks Qualifications Framework project is a joint effort of chefs, industry, educators, apprenticeship and tourism human resource organizations and associations in creating a clear and cohesive picture of how qualifications in the cooking profession link to one another.

It is an important tool to improve industry productivity through improved recruitment, selection and retention of skilled and qualified workers.
