Global Tourism Forum 2011

UNWTO and the government of the principality of Andorra have agreed to organize a leading global tourism forum during the first quarter of 2011.

The announcement was made jointly by UNWTO secretary-general, Taleb Rifai, and the minister of economy and finance of Andorra, Pere López, following the meeting of the board of trustees of the UNWTO Themis Foundation held on April 12 in Andorra la Vella.

This event, to be held in close collaboration with other key international partners and stakeholders, aims to bring together high-level representatives of the tourism public and private sectors and other global leaders so as to provide the industry with strategic insights and guidance into the challenges lying ahead.

The forum also constitutes a milestone in the growing cooperation between UNWTO and the government of Andorra. UNWTO and Andorra have a close institutional relation. The UNWTO Themis Foundation, sponsored by the government of Andorra and with its headquarters in Andorra la Vella, is the operational arm of UNWTO for implementing its program of work in the field of education, capacity building, training, strategic research, and networking.

Further joint programs include: the creation of a Tourism Observatory in Andorra; the development of a Mountain and Snow Tourism Knowledge Centre; the development of a tourism and training program at the University of Andorra; and other consolidated activities such as the practicum internship program for UNWTO member states officials, as well as other specialized training courses.

First World Statistics Day

On Wednesday, 20^th October 2010 (20-10-2010) the first World Statistics Day is being organised to celebrate the many achievements of statistics worldwide.

The International Statistics Institute (ISI) will celebrate WSD by launching a Press Release and the new ISI Declaration on Professional Ethics. The ISI Council has adopted the new ISI Declaration on Professional Ethics. It is published on the ISI website in English, French, Dutch and soon after become available in other languages. Read a special WSD message from ISI President Jef Teugels and ISI Director Ada van Krimpen.

The Declaration will be presented during a special session on 20 October 2010, organised by ISI Director Ada van Krimpen at the IAOS Conference in Santiago de Chile.

The United National Statistical Commission (UNSC) decided with great enthusiasm during its 41^st Session in February 2010 to celebrate WSD under the theme ‘Celebrating the Many Achievements of Statistics: Service, Professionalism and Integrity’. The UN Statistics Division (UNSD) will call on governments to celebrate this day in co-operation with the national statistical services. The date 20-10-2010 was chosen since the year rounding in '0' has always been an important year in official statistics. In many countries, this is the year when the population and housing census is conducted. It is also the base year for the trend analysis in economic statistics or in compilation of national accounts or input-output tables. In 2010, some 3 billion people will be counted in some 60 countries. This is why we choose 20-10-2010 to emphasize the importance of this year in official statistics calendar

The President of the ISI, Mr. Jef Teugels, has called upon all national and regional statistical societies to celebrate World Statistics Day and to develop plans for communicating this to the wider public. The ISI launched this web page in June 2010 for communications purposes. All ISI members and affiliates are invited to present plans and announcements to ISI for publication on this web page.

The Summer Solstice Aboriginal Arts Festival welcomes everyone to join in the celebration of our rich and diverse aboriginal cultures from across Canada, in honour of National Aboriginal Day. On Saturday, June 19, and Sunday, June 20, 2010, Victoria Island, downtown Ottawa (just across from the War Museum), offers a two-day FREE family event with lively children and family entertainment, Aboriginal artists, cultural performances and workshops, along with a mainstage concert series. Throughout the day, families will enjoy free pony rides, petting zoo, circus workshops and children’s craft stations. All of our guests enjoy an opportunity to witness Aboriginal artists at work and participate in some of our ongoing Aboriginal arts workshops where you create your own unique piece or collaborate on a community artwork. The mainstage is lively all day with the “Aboriginal Canada, We Got Talent” contest, which draws incredible singers, dancers and other great talent from across Canada. Roadmap Presentation for Tourism Human Resource Organizations & Partner Organizations

On Thursday, September 24, 1-2pm EDT, the CTHRC will be hosting a webinar for tourism HROs and partner organizations in partnership with ALLIES and Citizenship & Immigration Canada's Foreign Credentials Referral Office (FCRO).

The goal of the meeting is to present specific aspects of two Employer Roadmaps, developed by ALLIES and FCRO, which are applicable to recruiting and integrating internationally-trained workers into the Canadian workforce.

40th WorldSkills Competition

As only the second Canadian host of this event in its 60-year history, WorldSkills Calgary 2009 Ltd is proudly hosting The 40th WorldSkills Competition from September 1 - 7, 2009. Over 1,000 Competitors will compete simultaneously in 45 skill categories during four-days of intense Competition on Stampede Park in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The Tourism Industry Association of Canada is now accepting nominations for the 2009 National Awards for Tourism Excellence, presented by the Globe and Mail. Online nominations may be submitted in 15 categories until Noon EDT, Friday August 10th.

The TIAC National Awards for Tourism Excellence presented by The Globe and Mail were developed in 2003 by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada to recognize and foster Canadian tourism excellence. The awards are presented annually at a gala dinner during Canada's Tourism Leadership Summit. The awards allow Canada’s tourism industry to recognize those people, places, organizations and events that have gone above and beyond to offer a superior tourism experience to travelers in Canada.

It’s simple to nominate an individual, a business or an organization, and it can be a rewarding process for both the nominee and the nominator. Organizations may be self-nominated or nominated by another party, and you do not have to be a TIAC member to submit a nomination.

Canadian Skills Competition 2009

This coming May 20th to 23rd, for its first time ever, Skills/Compétences Canada - Prince Edward Island will be hosting the 15th annual Canadian Skills Competition. Charlottetown, PEI will showcase the event at the Civic Center and the Tourism & Culinary Institute where over 500 young Canadians who have successfully competed at the provincial and territorial level will compete for the title of National Champion. Not only will the competitors be tested against exacting standards in 40 skilled trades and technology areas but they will also compete against the best of the best from across Canada.

At this particular competition, some of Canada's top competitors in skilled trade and technology will be training alongside the participants from across the country. A number of the 38 Team Canada 2009 competitors representing Canada at the WorldSkills Competition in Calgary September 1-7, 2009 will be on site taking the opportunity to test their skills in a competitive environment. Although they will not be competing or evaluated in the same manner, these competitors will gain vital mental conditioning and a prime opportunity to perfect their skills. With top experts from the National Technical Comittee, Skills/Compétences Canada is able to provide these young people an opportunity to be mentored by the best in their respective fields. Some of the Team Canada 2009 competitors have also been called upon to judge at their respective trade and technology areas which will also provide them with additional insight on other practices and skill sets.
