Scared Spitless - Part 4

It’s a story about fear. It’s a story about God. It’s a story about us. Matthew 25:14-30 is one of the toughest stories in all of scripture. When you read it casually, the plot makes you swallow hard because it doesn’t end very well. At the end, God seems angry and the guy who played it safe ends up on the wrong side of eternity! When you read it carefully, you could end up being wrapped in fear and doing all the right things for all the wrong reasons. So, what’s a person to do? Come and join me this weekend as we unpack a variety of different kinds of fear. At the end, we will all have a moment to make the most important choice of all – Jesus or Fear. Don’t be afraid – God will walk us through it.

Scared Spitless - Part 3

Fear has a language. It’s not the language of screams, bumps in the night, or that “Screech-Screech” sound from the movie, “Psycho”. No, the language of fear is soft, persistent and contagious. The language of fear is “worry”. Truthfully, worry is an expression of our fear of the future or the unknown. We justify worry by consoling ourselves that at least by worrying we are doing something and something is better than nothing – right? In to our illogical reasoning steps Jesus and He poses a question, “Who of you, by worrying, can add a single hour to his life?” Hmm….tough question. Need an answer? Let’s get together this weekend and talk about it. Don’t worry, Jesus already has an answer to His own question!

Scared Spitless - Part 2

It was a simple request, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." At least, it seemed like a simple request. What the disciples didn't know about Jesus' request was that He was about to take them to the school of faith, trust and pure unadulterated fear! This weekend, we continue our series, "Scared Spitless: Breaking the Grip of Paralyzing Fear", by examining the fear that we all deal with when we lose control. We are going to ask some tough questions, "Is control an illusion? How do we relinquish control to God? What does it mean to fear God? What happened to the guys on the lake!?" Come and find out what happens when you combine a terrifying storm, a group of guys who are scared spitless, and the Son of God. You won't regret it!

Scared Spitless - Part 1

Have you ever made a decision based on what other people might think? Have you ever caved in to the pressure of what others wanted you to do? If the answer to either of those questions is yes, then congratulations! You have experienced what the Bible calls "the fear of man." Here's the bad news: the fear of man is deadly to your soul. This week, we begin a journey into the world of fear with a brand new series called "Scared Spitless: Escaping the Grip of Paralyzing Fear." We are going to walk with many biblical people who had to be consoled with the words "fear not" because they were scared to death. God has a special place in His heart for those of us who are stuck in the grip of fear. So don't be afraid! Come and hear what God has to say about your life and your fears. I'll see you here.

When All is Said and Done

This weekend is HUGE for CTK. Before the next great ministry season at Christ the King gets underway, we are going to pause and take a moment to talk about vision. Vision is what Jesus used to make the disciples believe that they really could change the world. Vision is what the Apostle Paul used to inspire the church under great persecution. Vision is what God uses to mobilize us to reach our community for Him. Vision is a picture of the future that produces passion. So, with a little help from a true man of vision (Moses), we are going to gather this weekend to cast a life vision that is so scary, only God's people would dream of daring to make it happen! I'll see you here.

Walk this Way - Part 9

I am utterly convinced that the single greatest thing to radically impact and shape all of culture is a proper understanding of the person of Jesus. Here is a man who is misunderstood, misquoted, denied, resisted and run from; yet he is never ignored. It is impossible to ignore Jesus. As others try to squeeze the last moments out of summer, we will be re-centering on our mission and purpose through the person of Jesus. I am hoping this weekend will challenge misconceptions or pre-conceived notions of who Jesus is. May Jesus enlighten both those who follow Him, and those who are yet to make that step, as to who He is and what His purpose for us is. I am not sure what the weather will be like outside on our last weekend of summer, but I can tell you inside at CTK we will be looking at Jesus, as we wrap up our series, "Walk this Way." Hope to see you there. -Derek!

This weekend is going to be hot! It’s going to be hot because we are going to walk through a furnace with three guys who thought they were toast! We are going to have a front row seat to a “Crucible Moment” in which three guys decide that their convictions are worth more than the power of conformity. This truth of this story is applicable to every person but especially to those who face the challenge of choosing Jesus moment by moment in their family, on the job and at school. I can’t wait to see what happens when God turns up the heat. I’ll see you here.

P.S. If it really is hot this weekend – cool – we have AC!!!!!!

I have been asking myself a lot of questions lately – scary questions. Questions like, “Jesus, what do you want from me? God, am I hearing you correctly? Father, why do I seem to trip and fall? Dad, did you hear me? Friend, what am I doing wrong? Savior, will you intervene and help?” This week we are going to walk alongside of someone who found themselves suddenly thrust on to a leadership stage that they did not want to be on. God had a word for this man and it’s the same word for us – Be strong and of courage. So, I have a scary question for you for this weekend, “Are you willing to walk this way?” I’ll see you here

Well, it’s over. (Deep Sigh!) My summer vacation days are all used up and it’s back to a more regular routine. The truth is, I rather enjoy the regular routine of my life because a life that follows Jesus is anything but boring! This week, we will continue our summer series called “Walk this Way”. We are going to focus on how God calls us out of regular lives and into a dynamic and exciting faith adventure. We are going to watch as Jesus calls a group of regular guys to “Come, follow me”. We are going to figure out what Paul means when he says, “Follow my example as I follow that of Christ’s”. We are going to hear God ask us a series of questions, “Will you follow? Will you trust me? Will you leave it all behind for my sake?” Come and join me as we follow Jesus as He calls us to “Walk This Way”. I’ll see you here!

Obedience. It's not a word we use often in 2008, but it's a key word for our current series of messages called "Walk This Way". This weekend, we'll be looking at glimpses of the life of a man who had an entire nation depending upon his obedience! It took abslolute trust and faith for Moses to obey God, and we can learn a lot from his story today. I hope you'll join with me in diving into the Word this weekend as we find out how our lives can be revolutionized when we put all of our trust in God, and obey Him as a result. I'll see you here!

Walk this Way - Part 4

As we walk through life, I believe it's fair to say that we want to walk in a way that leads to no regrets.

Have you ever wondered if someday your life would be remembered? What would it take to live a life that would end up someday in a hall of fame? Could it be that when we walk the way that we were meant to that it's possible to please God?

This weekend we're going to look at the life of a man who lived in such a way that he became a legend. In fact, he set a standard on how to walk that God would one day live out himself. This man is Abraham - the patriarch of our faith. I look forward to continuing our summer series "Walk this Way" as we look into the life of a man who truly walked in obedience to God.

Walk this Way - Part 3

Two small sentences from the Bible have been running around in my head for the better part of a month. Here they are: "Enoch walked with God" and "Noah walked with God." They don't seem like much do they? Only four words long, but they prompt a flood of questions: How do you do that? How do you keep up? Is that actually possible? They don't mean to "walk" literally do they? How big are God's steps? Does God wear shoes? Why would you want to go on that walk? What happens when you do? This weekend we continue in our summer series, "Walk this Way" and take the opportunity to walk with two guys who walked with God. We'll encounter the ups and downs of the journey, then God is going to ask that question again - will you trust me and walk this way? I'll see you here!

Walk this Way - Part I

This week we are starting a brand new series called, "Walk this Way". All through scripture God invites people to take a walk with Him. Some of the walks were to establish a trusting friendship. Others were for the purpose of God teaching the person about obedience. The final kind of walk happened when God sent a very specific person on a very personal mission. While all of the requests were different, they all ended up with the same outcome - the person who accepted God's invitation was never the same again. Well, here's the good news! God wants you to go for a walk this summer. Will you come? Will you risk? Will you follow? Come and join me this weekend as we take the first few steps and "Walk this Way". I'll see you here!

A CTK Special Presentation-Part 4

Have you ever had the words of song get stuck in your head? Have you ever tried so hard to not think about them that you actually found yourself thinking about them even more? Well, I have had a verse of scripture stuck in my brain for weeks. I have tried to make it go away by reading something else, thinking about something else and it just will not go away. So, if it won’t go away, I think I better preach about it! I would like to invite you to come to CTK this weekend to enjoy a meal with Jesus. We are going to do something together as a church family that Jesus asked us to do until He comes back. The last time I checked, Jesus hasn’t arrived and so we need to be obedient! Come and join me this weekend as we worship, pray, reflect and receive Communion. Just think about it – the God of all creation wants to have a meal and He invited us! Don’t miss out!

One of my favorite things to do with my mom as a kid was to make cookies. I didn't care about the flour, the butter, or the sugar... My main concern was the chocolate chips! I got as many as I could into the batch, and I ate what was left over. Though the other ingredients weren't as exciting, the cookies wouldn't taste right without them, and I'm glad that my mom cared about more than just the chocolate!
This weekend, we're going to take a look at the ingredients of worship. Some may excite you more than others, but it's good to know what the Bible says should go into the act and lifestyle worship. I look forward to learning with you this weekend! - Pastor Sam Middlebrook

In the midst of all the noise, all the rush, and all the busyness, people long for simplicity.
A CTK Special Presentation-Could Someone Please Change My Name

Nine years ago I preached this message. In fact, it the first message that I ever preached at CTK. I was digging through the archives last week and stumbled upon it again. The paper is rumpled, the tear stains still evident and as I read it again, I thought to myself, “A lot has changed in nine years but the truth is still the truth is still the truth and God hasn’t changed one bit.” Come and join me this weekend as I walk back to my first Sunday at CTK. A lot has changed but Jesus is still the answer. I’ll see you here! - Pastor Grant Fishbook

I don’t usually do “requests” when it comes to weekend messages but this question has come up multiple times during “Cleaver vs. Simpson: Busting the Myth of the Perfect Family”. The question is, “What do you do when the people who are supposed to love you the most hurt you the worst?” Wow – tough question. So, what is the answer? Forgive and forget? Suffer in silence? Wage a cold war? Deny and defer? Just take it because, after all, they’re family….right? I hope that you will come and join me this weekend as we open the Bible and see what God says about handling those family wounds that cut deep and leave life-long scars. You might be surprised at God’s plan for healing old wounds. I’ll see you here! - Pastor Grant Fishbook

Cleaver vs. Simpson, Part 4

This weekend we continue our series "Cleaver vs. Simpson: Busting the Myth of the Perfect Family" with a look at marriage. For our TV couples, it seems so easy. At the end of 7 seasons, Ward and June were still loving each other to pieces. Or take Homer and Marge, who are still going strong after 19 seasons! Wouldn't it be great if we could solve every marriage dilemma in a tidy little half-hour or hour time slot?

Truth is, neither of our TV families offers a perfect (or realistic) model for marriage. But since God created every one of us for relationship, He must have a way to make it all work! I invite you to come get a glimpse into His wisdom this weekend.

- Shawn Cunningham, Associate Pastor

Come and join us this weekend as we continue our series “Cleaver vs. Simpson: Busting the Myth of the Perfect Family.” This week it’s Ward vs. Homer! The Bible teaches that the role of the father is crucial in understanding how God wants families to work. The great news is that God our Father gives us a perfect picture of how a dad is supposed to operate and also offers Himself to each one of us as the perfect Father. Come and join Shawn Cunningham, Pastor of Marriage and Family Ministry, as he introduces us to our Heavenly Father whose invitation is “be like me.” We’ll see you here!

Cleaver vs. Simpson, Part 2

They are polar opposites. June Cleaver was the "perfect" mom - perfect hair, perfect disposition, perfect answers, perfect home, perfect everything. Marge Simpson, on the other hand, well, she's a cartoon and not even in the same ballpark. Honestly, neither one of them is the ideal when it comes to motherhood. This week, in honor of Mother's Day, I want you to meet a very important person in the life of Jesus - his mom. Though we don't see her often in scripture, Mary had a profound impact on the life of her son. Come and join me as we spend a day with Jesus and Mary - we may just learn some things together about honor, motherhood and family. I'll see you here.

My Friend Tim, Part 3

This is going to get messy! Things are going to get ugly! Hold on kid, this is not going to be pretty! Strong words – I wonder what Timothy was thinking when he heard them? Was he freaked out? Was he anxious? Was he troubled? This week we land squarely in II Timothy 3. Paul warns his protégé that there are inherent dangers to following Jesus and here’s the tough news – the dangers are still around to this day. Here’s the good news – Paul tells Timothy exactly what to do to survive. I hope you’ll come and join me as we laugh and learn our way through this amazing letter of wisdom. I’ll see you here.

<itunes:summary>This is going to get messy!

My Friend Tim, Part 2

Five years ago, almost to the day, I stepped into the role of Lead Pastor at Christ the King. I was scared, humbled, confused and challenged. On my first day in the office, one of our church elders stopped by and offered this advice: "Don't forget that the church belongs to Jesus." I have reminded myself of that fact many times in the past half decade.

This week, we meet a young pastor named Tim who could really use some help. He too is just starting out as a pastor, and an older and wiser mentor lays out exactly what a pastor and his church should do when they want Jesus to run their church. I hope you will come and join me because everything that Tim is told to do is exactly what God wants for CTK. I'll be preaching to myself this week, but I hope you'll come and listen in! I'll see you here.

My Friend Tim, Part I

We are beginning a new series this weekend entitled, My Friend Tim. Come join us as we take a walk with the Apostle Paul, a spiritual veteran in his last days, sharing with his spiritual son Timothy, a youngster in the faith, 4 pieces of timeless truth: “Be Bold,” “Stay-focused,” “Hold On,” “Finish Well.” Maybe you have been feeling like Timothy longing for someone older and wiser to teach you the ways of God? Maybe you’ve been asking for “God’s advice” in your everyday life? Or Maybe you feel like just giving up and throwing in the towel? In the next four weeks will attempt to answer some of these questions for you from the book of 2 Timothy! I look forward to seeing you this weekend! God bless you!

No Hidden Agenda - 5

Jesus has some unfinished business. Easter is over, death has been crushed, the resurrection has brought new life and the agenda of salvation has been accomplished. But, there is just one little detail that a guy named Peter would like to move beyond. He denied Jesus and now that Jesus is alive again well, they need to talk. What will Jesus say? What will happen to Peter? Can we find the agenda of Jesus in that conversation too? Come and join me this weekend as we wrap up our Easter series with some blunt talk about forgiveness, release and second chances. I can’t wait to see you here!

P.S. – I am still trying to find words to describe what happened at CTK this past Easter. The only two words that I can come up with so far are “He Won”!

Sweet and sour. Bitter and sweet. Jumbo and shrimp. They are words that should not belong together but we match them up just the same. This weekend is Palm Sunday and we are going to celebrate one of the most poignant, bittersweet moments in the Bible. Jesus is being hailed as a King but He knows something - in just one week, the same people who are calling him a King will be calling for His crucifixion. It must have been heart-breaking. Come and join me this weekend and we expose the agenda of Jesus in John 12:24..."unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds." It's time for the "CTK kernels" to gather and worship with all of our hearts! I'll see you here.

Last week, we made the claim that Jesus had no hidden agenda. However, the truth from scripture is that Jesus would often do miraculous acts, then tell people not to share that secret with anyone. Isn't that hidden? Was Jesus hiding something? What in the world is "The Messianic Secret?" Join us this week as our journey towards Easter takes us into the dark world of half-truths, secret missions and covert undercover operations. We will discover together that Jesus was on a very strategic mission to save us from ourselves. I'll see you here.

No Hidden Agenda - I

In a world where talk is cheap and where “what you see is rarely what you get”, it becomes increasingly hard to trust. But, deception is nothing new. All of human history has been marked with schemes, scams and secret motives. Then, along came Jesus. Though He often sought solitude, He had nothing to hide. He had no secret life. He made the boldest claims about himself and He is who He said He was. This Easter season, I invite you to meet a man who had no hidden agenda. He dared to live out in the open and He calls you to do the same. I’ll see you here!

As a guy, I struggle with I Corinthians 13. I read it and it all just seems a little soft for my liking. It also seems a little inconsistent to me because the guy who wrote it (Paul) was anything but cuddly! He was tough, abrasive, and honestly was a relational train wreck. So, I have to question…why is it in there? Could it be that Paul actually found a better way? Had Paul gone soft? Is he really asking me to get in touch with my feelings? Can I gag now! Come and join me this weekend as we discover the “rough edge” of God’s love. I promise – no flowers, no bad poetry and no group hugs! I’ll see you here.

I can’t speak for anyone other than myself, but I believe that most believers have a deep desire to want to please God. We want to do the right thing but in some areas – areas that God has spoken clearly and plainly about – we just decide to do our own thing. There is a word for it in scripture that we don’t like – rebellion. We convince ourselves, “I am not a rebel, I’m just not listening to God.” This week we are going to tackle the toughest area of Lordship that I have run into since I started pasturing in 1989. It’s not for the faint of heart, so my prayer is that God gives you the courage to come. I’ll see you here!

Have you ever thought about how many times you use faith in one day? I believe that the chair that I am sitting on right now will not collapse - that's a simple form of faith. I'm believing that when I arrive home later today, my family will still love me and that I haven't been disowned - that's another form of faith. I have faith that Jesus loves me even though I have never seen him with my physical eyes - that's another form of faith.

When I take those things and add the voice of God clearly saying "walk by faith and not by sight," it appears to me that I better know exactly where I am at when it comes to FAITH! Throw in Indiana Jones, a story about a t-shirt in India that will touch your heart and a simple prayer of faith and you will need to prepare yourself for a weekend that could change your whole life. I'll see you here!

GPS 2 - Where Y'at? Part 1

I remember the phone call like it was yesterday. A friend of mine was attempting to guide me to his location via some sketchy cell phone directions. I had no idea where I was going and he had no idea where I was currently located. Those two factors contributed to a one-word description of our situation: chaos! Finally, in desperation, my friend asked me the same question several times: "Grant, where are you at?" It took us a while but we finally got if all figured out.

Over the next four weeks, I would like to pose that question to CTK – Where you at? I know the grammar is bad, but the question is very clear. There are some areas of life into which God has spoken with great clarity. We have been talking about the challenges of hearing God's voice. This week, we are going to hear exactly what God has said and then ask ourselves, "Where are we at in regard to obeying what God has asked of us?" Confused? No problem. Come and join us as we hear the voice of God and then simply decide... to obey or not to obey.

I have one simple question for you this week….what does God sound like? As we have walked through this series, “GPS: Putting God in the center of life’s toughest decisions”, I have heard this question asked by numerous people. How can I know it’s God? What if it’s just me? What if it is the burrito I ate for lunch? Worse yet, what if it’s the Devil and I end up making the biggest mistake of my life? We all question from time if who we are hearing is really God. This weekend, I would like to answer that question from the Word as we hear how God describes His own voice. Let’s get ready to hear it! I’ll see you here.

GPS - Putting God in the Center of Life's Toughest Decisions, Part 3

Have you ever tried to just close your eyes and do something without the help of sight? It's not easy. In fact, it seems impossible and within seconds we open our eyes because our sight helps us know exactly where we are. So, with that being said, what is the deal with God asking us to walk by faith and not by sight? Doesn't that seem like an impossible request?

This weekend, we are going to continue our series "GPS: Putting God in the Center of Life's Toughest Decisions" as we learn what it really means to walk by faith and not by sight. I truly believe that God wants his children to learn to walk their "faith walk" and leave behind our natural tendency to use this world as our source of direction. Come and join us as we step out in faith and hear God's voice giving us the direction that we all want and need! I'll see you here.

There is nothing more purposeful in life than experiencing God. This week we continue our new series, GPS: Putting God in the Center of Life’s Toughest Decisions. In this second part of the series we will be focusing on how God speaks, posturing ourselves so we can hear God’s voice and, most importantly, discover what God is saying to our lives today. I believe if we listen, believe, and obey God’s voice we will experience God. Join us this weekend as we start the year off by listening to God. I hope and pray that your week is filled with encounters with God. See you on the weekend.

GPS - Putting God in the Center of Life's Toughest Decisions, Part I

I got a GPS for my birthday! It is the most amazing little gizmo that I have ever used and it comes with an amazing promise – it promises that I will NEVER be lost again! Somehow, I think the company may be overstating their gizmo’s ability to keep me on the straight and narrow, but I (and my wife) thank them for their sentiment. This series is all about finding direction. It’s about hearing God’s voice and following His plan. It’s about being confident that even when we make a wrong decision, that we still are guided by a very right God. I hope that you will come and join me this weekend as we launch a new faith adventure: GPS: Putting God in the center of life’s toughest decisions.

Wow! I’m still somewhat speechless. 147 people were obedient to Jesus and were baptized on the weekend. For the record, it’s not the number that is important – it’s the obedience! This weekend, we are going to turn the corner into Romans 8. I love this chapter! It’s full of joy, passion, vitality and practical instruction on how to make our new identity stick. Come and join me as we ditch the condemnation and fully embrace our adoption by God. Let’s gather together and celebrate the Father who always has room for more in His family. I’ll see you here.

Last week was all about deep fried twinkies! This week, we hear from Paul about an age old struggle…the struggle between the good things that we know we should be doing and our inability to get the job done. Paul goes to a whole new level of vulnerability about his own spiritual struggles and he dares us to follow him. Do you have the courage? Are you willing to tell the truth to yourself? Are you willing to find out why you do the things you don’t want to do? Join me this weekend as we tackle this tough one together and celebrate baptisms at the same time! If you would like to be baptized during our weekend services, please call the church at 733-1337.

How would you feel if someone showed up in your life and said, “You are just plain wrong. You have been chasing the wrong things for your entire life. You have completely missed the point on everything!”? I don’t know about you but I think I would hit them! – don’t freak out, it’s just my sinful nature being honest! We probably wouldn’t react all that well to that kind of news. This weekend we are going to drop some bombshells from the book of Romans. If you thought Paul has been tough up to this point, well, you better bring a seatbelt. Come and join me as we dive into the bomb-shelter of Romans 7 and also learn about Candid Camera, deep fried twinkies and the wisdom of John Wayne. I’ll see you here.

There is an ugly word that hangs in the English language: slavery. The history of the word makes some people look at the ground in embarrassment. For others, the word makes them grieve the loss of the freedom of their ancestors. For others, it is the heartbreaking state of their present reality. What do we do when Paul starts throwing the word “slavery” around and then says that we should willing become slaves to Jesus? What is up with that? Join me this weekend as we continue to dive deeply in Romans 6. Don’t forget – there is a promise of freedom and deliverance coming and that is GREAT NEWS!

Last weekend, we began to ask the question, “What’s in your wallet?” No, not the wallet in your back pocket... the wallet in your soul where your identity is held. We opened the book of Romans and heard the Apostle Paul say that one of the membership cards that we should be carrying says, “Sinner…saved by grace.”

This week, we continue on that journey and will add another card that could turn our lives upside down! I hope that you will come and join me as we press into Romans and follow the lead of a former hit man as he models what it means to be transformed from the inside out. I’ll see you here!

You can tell a lot about a person by looking at their wallet. If you look at my wallet, you will quickly discern that I like organization, that I am addicted to cleanliness, that I’m allergic to old receipts, that I have a disdain for cash and that I think my driver’s license picture depicts a man who is abnormally happy! (The smile is just a little too big!) This week, we begin a new journey through the book of Romans that asks a simple question, “What’s in your wallet?” Our “wallet” contains a modern equivalent of our identity and the book of Romans contains everything we need to establish a healthy spiritual identity. I can’t encourage you enough to come and join me this weekend as we move into this Fall searching earnestly for the identity that only Jesus can give. I look forward to seeing you here!

<itunes:summary>You can tell a lot about a person by looking at their wallet. I look forward to seeing you here!.</itunes:summary>

The Sixth Objective - Part 4

It's a word that is not often used by Christians. Personally, I think we are afraid of it. The word is "inspiration." This past summer, I heard a great leader make a plea to other leaders: "Please, if nothing else, inspire me!" Sometimes, we just need a boost to our feeble efforts to follow Jesus fully. I hope to do that this weekend as we prepare the ground for our work in the book of Romans this fall.

In making the ground ready, I would like to introduce you to my biblical small group. They are a cast of broken characters who have inspired me to grasp hold of Jesus and not look back. They are friends, brothers, sisters and mentors. They lived long ago but live on in the pages of scripture. I love them. I need them. I trust them to always point me to Jesus. I'll see you (and them) on the weekend!

PS -we are honored to have Jon Bauer as a guest worship leader this weekend. Let's join Jon in the worship and praise of our God.

The Sixth Objective - Part 3

Have you ever had a dream and then realized that it was so big that only God could make it happen? That is exactly how I feel heading into this week. We have the dream of true biblical community at CTK but there are so many obstacles. The work is so big and the obstacles so ominous that only God will able to accomplish this dream. The cool thing is that this dream was God’s to begin with. Come and join us this weekend as we continue on our journey towards The Sixth Objective.

Just a friendly reminder: On October 6-7th, 2007 we are adding another service. Our new service times will be Saturday night at 6 pm and Sunday morning at 8:30, 10:00 and 11:30AM.

This weekend, we are gathering to remember Jesus and to celebrate his statement in John 10 - I lay down my life for the sheep. Come and join us as we experience one form of biblical community and humbly come to the Lord's Table. Take a moment to see people serving and being served, loving and being loved, accepting and being accepted. Then, join us as we continue our series on the 6th Objective and hear the many ways in which God revealed Himself to us in community. I look forward to seeing how God will change us as we experience His heart firsthand. I'll see you here.

The Sixth Objective - Part 1

This week begins a new journey for CTK. It’s a journey that will begin in the Garden of Eden, stop over in the ancient city of Rome, make a brief stop on Sesame Street and in Mr. Roger’s neighborhood, touch down at a bar in Boston called Cheers, fly over the mysterious island on “LOST” and finally end in a city called the New Jerusalem. It’s a journey that will call us all to new levels of ownership and will truly test some of the assumptions we have long held about this amazing thing called “church”. This week, we unveil the Sixth Objective and in doing so we will be taking a step of faith, obedience and courage. I look forward to walking through this journey of discovery and community together.
Transfomer - More than meets the eye

Do you remember being little, when adults used to ask you what you wanted to be when you grew up? What did you say? A policeman, ballerina, actor or actress? As we get older, new goals replace younger ones: a desire for companionship, to finish our education, find a meaningful job and a place to call home. If you were asked right now what you would change about yourself, or your situation, what would you say? Recently, the Transformers movie hit the theaters, where robots coming to earth could choose a vehicle to change into. What if God could change each one of us into something that He could use for His purposes? I look forward to seeing you this long weekend as we look into the life transformer, and discover that the life He intended is more than meets the eye!

Check Engine: Preventative Maintenance for the Soul, Part 4

Many years ago, singer/songwriter Jackson Browne wrote a song that has become the anthem for our busy modern world – Running On Empty. Sadly, many of us have strategically set ourselves up to do just that – run on empty. We blaze through life going 95 miles an hour hoping to grab a quick moment of joy here and a moment of clarity there and then wondering why we end up asking questions like, “If this is so amazing, then why am I so tired?” As we get ready to close the final week in our series, “Check Engine: Preventative Maintenance for the Soul,” my challenge to you is to gear down, stop revving your engine, put everything in neutral for a moment and come to the side of the road to hear Jesus. Stop. Rest. Slow down. Ease up. Breathe. I’ll see you here. P.S. If it only took you four seconds to open, read, tell yourself “that‘s not me!” and delete this message well, you REALLY need to come!

So, what’s a guy supposed to do when he is preaching a series called, “Check Engine: Preventative Maintenance for the Soul” and God tells him that he needs to check his own spiritual dashboard? That’s right, my light is on. So, I find myself just like you – parked by the side of the road and hoping that help comes soon. This weekend, I’m just going to tell you how I knew my engine light was on and how God showed me what I could do to make it go away. I hope that you will come and join me. I’m going to need all the support that I can get. See you there.

This weekend we continue our series entitled, "Check Engine: Preventative Maintenance for the Soul." There is nothing like the feeling of driving down the highway and hearing your car make a noise that it doesn't usually make. When that noise is followed by a shudder, and the shudder soon becomes a "chug," well, it's time to get off the road and start dialing AAA!

This week we are going to hear 6 phrases that always indicate it is time to check your spiritual engine light. I have said many of them myself. I know that every time I say them, it means I am heading towards a bad spiritual choice, and that it's time for a complete engine overhaul. Curious as to what the 6 statements are? Come and find out! I'll see you here! -Pastor Grant Fishbook

Check Engine: Preventative Maintenance for the Soul

This weekend we are starting a brand new series called, "Check Engine: Preventative Maintenance for the Soul." As we get ready for the onslaught of fall and the insanity that comes when our schedule begins to fire on all cylinders, God has led me to ask the question, "What do you do when the check engine light of your soul begins to flash?" Do you ignore it? Do you disable it? Do you try and fix it yourself? Where is the owner's manual for your heart?

Come and join me this weekend as we talk about God's preventative maintenance for our souls. Take that concept, add a 1978 Honda Civic that I forgot to put oil into, and it all adds up to a summertime spiritual adventure! I'll see you on the weekend. -Pastor Grant Fishbook

Maybe it's a doghouse for Champ, or maybe it's something more important - like a relationship or a family. Whatever you're building, there's are a few important things you won't want to forget.

This week is the final message in our series, "There's a Song About That..." We conclude with Psalm 127 which has a lot to say about building.
Theres a Song About That...Track 9

Maybe things have changed, but I distinctly remember singing songs in vehicles. Whether it was a family road trip, a field trip in a school bus or just driving on my own, there is something about singing in a vehicle that makes the time go faster. Songs about marching ants, the wheels on the bus or taking a designated number of beverage bottles and passing them around - all were sung just to pass the time.

The Israelites had a similar version of traveling songs called "songs of ascent" that they would sing as they traveled toward the festivals held in Jerusalem. This week, we are hearing from Psalm 126. It's a song about people who once were captive but now are filled with joy because they are free. It sounds just like us! Come and join me this weekend as we hear that there's a songs about us! I'll see you here.

It's time for a happy song! Everyone has a song that just makes them feel better. For me, it's "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger. Not sure why I like it, but, every time I hear it (no matter the circumstance) it just makes me feel better. This week, our songwriter is in a great mood and his passion is infectious. He spurs his listeners on to make a loud noise about how amazing God is, and this weekend we are going to join him. Come and join us as we celebrate the God of Psalm 100. I'll see you here.

<itunes:summary>GGrowing up, there were several "Fishbook" rules regarding etiquette at the dinner table. No talking with your mouth full. One foot on the floor at all times. No reading, and definitely no singing. Not sure about the last two but that's the way it was!

Psalm 115 certainly would have broken the last commandment of dining with my family. Psalm 115 was sung during the Passover celebration and it covers the normal scope of dinner conversation - pride, idolatry, stone, gold, silver and God. So, come and talk with your mouth full of praise this weekend as we continue our series, "There's a Song About That..." I'll see you here!

This week we continue our series on the passion and promises of the psalms with part five of "There's A Song About That." We'll be looking at Psalm 73, a psalm by a guy named Asaph, who was basically King David's choir director! Asaph starts his song saying, "Surely God is good..." That statement raises an important question for each one of us. Do you really believe that God is good? The way you answer that question can profoundly influence the way you look at life. Come this weekend as we look for the best answer to that important question. I'll see you there!

This weekend we welcome an old friend back to the stage at CTK. Dave Browning was an associate pastor at CTK before being sent to pioneer CTK Skagit. God has blessed Dave’s work in Skagit County and now over 6000 people gather to worship in multiple venues each weekend. Dave has been a close friend for many years and it was his passion for Whatcom County that actually drew Laurel and I here in 1995. I can’t encourage you strongly enough to join us as we hear Dave share the heart of King David from Psalm 62.

Come and join us as we continue our series, “There’s a song about that…”

This week we find David singing a scared song. He has been captured by one of his enemies and his life is hanging in the balance. He is scared to death. Where will he run? What will he do? Come and join me this weekend as we follow our scared song writer right into a place that we all have to go at some time - the place of fear and trust. I'll see you here.

TLast week was a sad song. This week is a mad song. David is ticked. He takes off his verbal gloves and tells God to go and get his enemies and make them pay! It's a no-holds-barred, knock down, drag 'em out call for a good old fashioned fight! We will read it, gulp and then ask God two questions: who is really my enemy, and how do You want me to deal with them? Should be fun! Bring your helmet! I'll see you here. -Pastor GrantFishbook

It's time to graduate from the book of James. This weekend, Jim gives us his final piece of wisdom and then sends us off to live it out. I have spoken at many graduation addresses and honestly, I don't think people remember much of what was said! The cool thing about James is that his words have lasted for centuries. Come and join me this weekend as we "graduate" to a whole new level with Jesus. I'll see you here!
