Most of you know that Linda and I live a healthy life style. What is a healthy life style? For the most part, there is general agreement that a healthy life style will in some way include the following:

Eat organic real food, especially lots of fruits, veggies, and whole grains.

Avoid anything processed or unnatural including fast food and processed beverages.

Avoid drugs, both legal and illegal. Don’t smoke! Easy on the alcohol.

Get 25+ minutes of exercise every day, hopefully doing something fun or even inspiring.

Get proper rest, including a good night’s sleep

Have a daily practice to reduce stress and quiet the mind.

It’s so simple even a Dibble can do it. We don’t preach about healthy living but, instead, try to model healthy living behavior. However, now and again, something comes our way that we just have to say something about. This is one of those times.

A couple of weeks ago we spent some time with a wonder couple, Marc and Vicki Sorenson. Marc, a Ph.D. and a brilliant man, has written a stunning and ground-breaking book that, I believe, every person who cares about their own health and the health of loved ones should read—cover to cover. I did and it changed my perspective on health like no book I’ve read in a very long time. The book is Vitamin D3 and Solar Power for Optimum Health http://www.vitaminddoc.com/. This is one of the best-researched and important books Linda and I have ever read.

I won’t say anymore except GET THE BOOK! We are in no way benefiting from the sale of this book but felt called to share it with the kindred spirits (you) who have supported our work over these many years. If you are as moved to action by the information in this book as Linda and I have been, share it with those whose health you care about. Thank you, thank you, thank you Marc and Vicki Sorenson. This information is a gift to the many in desperate need of a synergetic re-connection with the light that sustains all life on earth–magnificent sunlight.

With admiration and respect,

David and Linda

CTypes Results – Sue Turns Her Life Around

Introduction: In this 10-part series, we will take you through the process that a coach, counselor, leader, manager, therapist or teacher might use to assist clients, employees and peers in solving problems using CTypes. This process is called the “On the Wall” process and is outlined in detail in our CTypes for Professionals online training. This process will also be demonstrated in real time with a volunteer in our CTypes Teacher Training Certification Program November 7-9 in San Diego. In our many years of using and refining the One the Wall (OTW) process, it has proved to quickly make problems visible and offers a systematic and effective methodology for professionals to assist clients and employees in solving challenging problems and changing lives—both at work and at home. It’s a powerful process. We have turned around entire companies and many individual lives using variations of this process.

Part 10 – Ctypes for Professionals – Results Created With Clients, Employees, and Peers

Over and over again, clients, students and groups have had success using CTypes and the On the Wall methodology in solving life’s most challenging issues and problems, both at home and at work. With practice, you too can master CTypes for the benefit of yourself, your loved ones, your clients, employees or peers.

Results for Sue: Sue was able to get her boss’ buy-in for her plan and schedule. This resulted in Sue working fewer days per week and a set number of hours per day. She was able to delegate a number of her responsibilities, especially those for which she was not hired and did not enjoy doing. She was also to negotiate expanding a few of her responsibilities to include some of the projects that she was excited to tackle, but had never had the time or resources. She now enjoys work and looks forward to going to work each day.

Although in this series we looked only at addressing Sue’s workplace issues, using this process, she was also successful at home. She healed her relationship with her daughter and, although not perfect, is making big strides in healing her relationship with her husband, Jack. She’s back into yoga, has improved her diet and even found a little time to quiet her mind. In her own words, “My whole life has changed out of this work.”

Anyone can learn to use CTypes in this way, whether as a professional assisting clients, employees or peers, or as a powerful gift from Spirit for self growth and healing relationships at home. If you’ve come this far in this series, there are no accidents. CTypes are likely to play a part in you creating your life the way you want it. If you just want to get started in using CTypes, you will want to consider our online Introduction to CType course. Please stay in touch.

With admiration and respect,

Taking Right Action With Action Items

Part 9 – Creating Action Items

On a new flip chart, identify what specific actions your client or members of the group are willing to take to resolve the issues at work or at home. Then, identify the most important actions that the client must take to make his or her move to the CType Opposite and create action Items around this move to the Opposite. Once a person commits to an Action Item, he or she becomes responsible for the Action Item. In a personal or organizational change process that will take place over a period of time with multiple meetings, Action Items become the agenda for the following meeting.

An action Item contains three elements:

The name of the person(s) responsible for the action.

The action to be taken.

The date by which the action will be completed.

Example – Sue agreed to the following actions that would move her from Cancer to Capricorn in solving her work related problems:

Create a plan for transforming her work life – Action Item: Sue will create the plan by xx/xx/xxxx.

Create a schedule that would work for her and her boss – Action Item: Sue will create the schedule by xx/xx/xxxx.

Schedule a formal meeting with her boss to present her plan – Action Item: Sue will arrange a meeting with her boss by xx/xx/xxxx.

Tip for Solving Any Problem

Without Action, Nothing Happens in the World. Always try to end any meeting, whether with a client or a group, with action Items. This general principle applies to individual clients, work groups, or any gathering where something is to be accomplished or changed over time.

In Part 10 of this series, the conclusion of this series, we will look at the Results Sue was able to create in her work life through the CTypes On the Wall process. If you just want to get started in using CTypes, you will want to consider our online Introduction to CType course.

CTypes as the Source of Sue’s Problems – Putting “Sue” On the Wall

Part 8 – Ctypes as the Source of Sue’s Problems

On a new flip chart, split the paper into three sections by making a large “T” about ¼ of the way down the paper. Designate the top section:

Sue: Work – Problems = Too much Natural Cancer Thinking

Solutions = Move toward Opposite Capricorn Thinking

In the left lower section, List the answers to the question, “Where does it appear that you (Sue) may be doing too much of your Natural Cancer CType thinking?

Example: Sue Doing Too Much Cancer Thinking

Can’t say no

Constantly nurturing everyone including the boss

I’m feeling like a martyr

I feel a need to control others so we get the outcomes I want

I’m constantly complaining about others not doing their part

After all I’ve done, this is how I’m treated

In the right lower section, List the answers to the question, “What actions might I (Sue) take to move toward my Opposite Capricorn CType thinking?

Example – Sue Moving From Cancer to Capricorn CType thinking:

Stop complaining – Take Action

Have it the way I want it

Create a plan

Meet with the boss

Create a schedule

Start taking my yoga class

Take care of myself first

Now Identify the “hot spots” where Sue is willing to take right action by applying the 80/20 rule:

Stop complaining – Take Action

Have it the way I want it

Create a plan

Meet with the boss

Create a schedule

Start taking my yoga class

Take care of myself

In Part 9, we will use 80/20 and look at creating right action for Sue in moving from Cancer to Capricorn. If you just want to get started in using CTypes, you will want to consider our online Introduction to CType course.

CTypes – Brainstorming the Hot Spots On the Wall

Part 7 – Brainstorm the Hot Spots

At the top of a new flip chart, write one of the hot spots. In this case we are looking at the hot spot, “Work.” Now begin applying the Double E Brainstorm process, except this time you are applying it to the hot spot for Sue, “Work.”

Ask the question, “Are there any problems, concerns or issues that have been bothering you lately related to your work?”

When a member of the group or your client responds, write in his or her words the concern or problem as it relates to this hot spot.

Ask again, “What else?” and repeat the question after each response until there are no more issues to be listed.

Example for Sue – Work Issues:

Working 6 days/week

Boss asks me to do everything

Boss calls me in at any time including weekends

I’m always covering for Boss and others

We had a layoff & I have no one to help me

I don’t want to let people down

I can’t make plans outside of work

Again, there are threads that connect a number of concerns about work into distinct categories. List the Threads:

Too much time at work

No set schedule

Me not able to say “no”

Me feeling that I’m the only one who can do things right

I want my boss to appreciate me

From your list of groupings, identify the hot spots and put a red dot on each of the hot spots. Apply the 80/20 rule if this is helpful for the client. Whether working with a single client or larger group, always try to identify the critical 20% of the issues and focus your efforts there. In this case, it appears that if we can solve the hot spot issues of “too much time at work” and “no set schedule,” we can solve 80% of the Sue’s work-related issues.

Threads:

Too much time at work

No set schedule

Me not able to say “no”

Me feeling that I’m the only one who can do things right

I want my boss to appreciate me

In Part 8, we will look at CTypes as the source of Sue’s problems. If you just want to get started in using CTypes, you will want to consider our online Introduction to CType course.

There is a general principle called the 80/20 rule that states that in most cases, 80% of the results are created by working on 20% of the variables. We call this 20% “the critical 20.” We use the 80/20 rule extensively when choosing the issues/problems that we want to address.

You can test the 80/20 rule in your own life. Make a list of all the restaurants you go to and you’ll see the 80% of the time you go to 20% of the restaurants on your list. You’ll also find the 80% of the time you wear 20% of the clothes or shoes in your closet. We use the 80/20 rule in setting priorities in CTypes work, in systems improvement in the workplace, in creating right action for clients, and in our own businesses. It is out of the 80/20 rule that we have created the following “Dibbleism”: Work only on the Critical 20. Unless something is in the Critical 20, forget about it. There is no time to address everything, and you should not try. Dabbling in the trivial 80% is a distraction and a poor use of time and energy.

Example – Sue identifies her hot spots: As a facilitator, you instruct Sue to identify the issues that seem to have the most emotional energy around them. This can be a category of issues or a single issue. Put a red dot (hot spot) next to these high emotional energy issues. Apply the 80/20 rule if this is helpful for the client. Whether working with a single client or larger group, always try to identify the critical 20% of the issues and focus your efforts there.

Work

Stress

Relationships with Jack/my daughter

Self care

CTypes – Becoming a Master Coach and Facilitator

Part 5 – The Double E Brainstorm – Distilling the Emotional Energy into Issues

There will be threads that connect a number of concerns into distinct categories. Go through the list with the clients and ask him/her/them which concerns seem to go together. Circle those things that are similar with the same color.

Look for the next group of similar concerns and circle those with a different color. Continue on until you have circled each of the groups with different colors. Now go back to the different groupings and ask the client to give each grouping a name. An example of a work-related grouping might be named “work.” A relationships related group might be named “relationships,” or “family.”

Example of color-coded list of Issues for example client Sue – A Cancer Woman:

I hate my job

I’m worn out

I have no time for myself

My boss is too demanding

I’m gaining weight

I’m stressed out

I think Jack may be cheating on me

My daughter hasn’t called me/her husband is an ass

The car needs tires

My sex life is non-existent

I’m commuting an hour each way to work

I know I shouldn’t, but I eat tons of junk food

I have trouble sleeping

I have no time for my yoga classes – which I love

Have the client or group name each color-coded category. For example, “problems in my marriage” or “problems with my boss” or “health issues.”

The example client, Sue, named her categories as follows:

Work

Stress

Relationships with Jack/my daughter

Self care

In Part 6, we will look at Finding Hot Spots in the client’s life. If you just want to get started in using CTypes, you will want to consider our online Introduction to CType course.

It’s a powerful process. We have turned around entire companies and many individual lives using variations of this process.

Part 4 – The Double E Brainstorm – Beginning the Process

Begin the Process:

Ask if scribe(s) are ready, if you are using scribes.

Ask your client the question, “Are there any problems, concerns or issues that have been bothering you lately.” If this is for a workgroup or other group, phrase your question in an appropriate way such as: “What are your concerns about your job, the department, the company or work in general?”

When a member of the group or your client responds, write the concern or problem in his or her words. As a facilitator, it’s important to use positive regulators in response to each participant. Use words like “good,” “great,” “yes,” “perfect,” to show your appreciation for their inputs.

Ask again, “What else?” and repeat the question after each response until there are no more issues to be listed.

Here is an example of a list of issues put On the Wall for a client, Sue – A Cancer Woman:

I hate my job

I’m worn out

I have no time for myself

My boss is too demanding

I’m gaining weight

I’m stressed out

I think Jack may be cheating on me

My daughter hasn’t called me/her husband is an ass

The car needs tires

My sex life is non-existent

I’m commuting an hour each way to work

I know I shouldn’t, but I eat tons of junk food

I have trouble sleeping

I have no time for my yoga classes – which I love

Explain the following rules or guidelines:

Only one person speaks at a time

Raise your hand if you want to speak

The facilitator will choose each contributor from hands raised

Be patient, everyone will have an opportunity to speak

You will define your concern until it is exactly what you want On the Wall

No personal attacks

Don’t worry about repeats

No Judgment (from participants or facilitator)

No problem solving (this is key – problem solving will stop the process)

Have Fun

CTypes – Becoming a Master Practitioner – Part 2

The Double E Brainstorm – Introduction and Preparation

Usually, putting an issue On the Wall starts with a Double E Brainstorm. Going forward I will speak of how to use the Double E Brainstorm with a group, but it works as well when working with an individual client, employee or peer.

Double E stands for Emotional Energy. Most brainstorms are designed to get ideas out of people’s heads and up for discussion. A Double E Brainstorm is different. It is designed to get emotional energy out of people’s Feminine Mind (feelings) and On the Wall. The purpose of this brainstorm is two-fold:

It is an opportunity for people to be heard in airing their concerns in a safe environment.

It exposes negative emotional energy associated with negative thinking, which is the main source of problems of in person’s life. In the workplace, it is also an indicator of systems problems.

It is not unusual for groups coming together to do a Double E Brainstorm to be somewhat concerned or even hostile to the process. Some might see it as a waste of time, flavor of the month, or interrupting their work or break times. However, even in the most negative of environments, this process has always worked for us. For example, we did one of these brainstorms with several hundred mostly angry union nurses at a large top-five medical center. To say that the relationship between the nurses and management was strained would be putting it mildly. I explained to the group what we would be doing and what the outcomes would be. I told them that the room would become very high-energy and loud, but that we would be able to hear a pin drop in the hall when the process was complete. After the usual reluctant start, the place became alive with emotional energy. 20 minutes later it was dead silent. Everyone had been heard and their concerns were noted in their exact words On the Wall. The energy in the room shifted from generally hostile to one of anticipation and hope.

The Double E Brainstorm can be done with single individuals, and with groups as large as 500. We haven’t tried it will groups larger than 500, but believe it would work well, with logistics and facilitation being the gating factors.

Keys for Facilitating a Double E Brainstorm

Being in the front of the room as a facilitator or working with a single client, your presence is important. (Via Gandhi) – Be the change you want to see in the room or with your client.

Logistics

Have your AV equipment or flip chart(s) and all support materials ready to go. If you’re working with a group, try to have seating close to the front of the room with unobstructed views. If using a scribe, have your scribe(s) ready to go (either on the computer/projector or the flip charts).

In Part 3, we will look at Introducing the Double E Brainstorm. If you just want to get started in using CTypes, you will want to consider our online Introduction to CType course.

CTypes – Becoming a Master Practitioner – Part 1

Part 1 – Introduction to the CTypes for Professionals and the On the Wall process.

As a starting point in working with your clients or employees using the OTW process, we suggest that you review the following CType Principles for Professionals:

8 CType Principles for Professionals Working With Clients or Employees:

Understand your clients’ CTypes.

Avoid projecting your CType onto your client.

Know that problems are caused by your client doing too much of his or her Natural CType thinking.

Know that the solution to any problem is in a move to our CType Opposites.

Assist your client to move toward his or her Opposite CType.

Put your clients’ life/issues On the Wall where you can make it visible.

Create action to move your client forward in solving his or her problems.

Consider that, as a professional coach, counselor, leader or manager, you will do your best work and grow personally, professionally and spiritually when moving toward your own opposite CType.

In Part 2 of this series, we will look at the starting point for the OTW process, the Double E Brainstorm. If you just want to get started in using CTypes, you will want to consider our online Introduction to CType course.

Join Me For “Implementing the Four Agreements at Work Through CTypes”

I have been invited to be an honored guest at Coach Academy International’s From Inner Power to Outer Impact Telesummit that began with a special preview event this week and then runs through the 12th of September. http://pwc2.com/DavidDibble
