This summer, if you’re looking to improve your study skills and maybe find some air conditioning, drop by the Learning Support Services located on the fourth floor, MacOdrum Library for a 25-minute study-skills workshop on the following topics:

Managing Your Time
Managing Procrastination
Research Skills
Essay Writing
Citation and Referencing
Memory and Concentration
Preparing for Exams
Writing Exams

Writing Tutorial Service: online booking also available

Writing support for academic papers, essays and reports is available and you can sign up for the service online.

By logging on to mySuccess through Carleton Central, you can make an appointment with a Writing Tutorial Service (WTS) tutor. The WTS continues to operate throughout the fall until December 15th. Hours of operation during this period are:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

Tuesday, Thursday: 9:00 am – 7:30 pm

Trained tutors will assist you at all stages of writing your paper. You can book a 50-minute appointment with a writing tutor by calling (613) 520-2600, ext. 1125, by visiting 404 MacOdrum Library, Reception Desk, or online. For further information, please visit the web site www.carleton.ca/wts.

Getting ready to graduate and looking for your first ‘real-world’ job?

The Career Centre encourages all undergraduate students as well as those graduating this spring, to sign up for the Undergraduate & New Alumni Career Certificate. This certificate will take place over a two-day period: Friday, June 3 and Monday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Registrants must attend both days.

In this workshop, students and new alumni will:

Make career choices based on your personality type;
discover how to establish career decision making criteria;
learn to write a resume and cover letter, and
establish interview skills.

Register before June 2 on myCareer via Carleton Central. Click on the ‘Workshop/Events’ tab under the Career Centre heading.

Sick notes and medical certificates reminder

With final exams well underway, there are a few things to remember in regards to sick notes and medical certificates. You must be seen by a doctor before the exam if you are ill—we cannot assess you for illness one or two days after the exam.

If Health and Counselling Services is closed, you can visit a walk-in clinic in the community to get a note. Click here for a link to some urgent care clinic locations.

If you leave an exam half way through and come to the clinic for a note and the doctor does an assessment and finds that you are not ill, you will not get a note.

When you order your morning cup of coffee, you know if you’re ordering a dark roast, a medium roast, a light roast, or a triple venti, two pump, sugar free, vanilla soy latte, but do you know if your fair trade coffee is actually fairly traded? Gillian Gibson, a history master’s student, thinks about this every day as part of her research into coffee co-operatives in Peru.

Students display their talents at 2011 Interactive Multimedia and Design Senior Project Fair

Fourth-year Carleton University students will showcase their talents during the 2011 Interactive Multimedia and Design Senior Project Fair on Wednesday, April 6 from noon to 4:30 p.m. in the Azrieli Pavilion. The event will profile 3-D computer and immersive games, short animated films and interactive installations. Guest judges from the multimedia industry will be evaluating each group project based on a 20-minute presentation followed by a question and answer session.

Carleton participates in Earth Hour

Carleton University is once again taking the Earth Hour challenge from 8:30-9:30pm on March 26, and shutting down as many of our lights on campus as possible. We are asking for your support in this effort. While largely symbolic, it demonstrates that we can reduce our dependence on lighting and make simple choices to lessen our impact on the earth.

In the last two Earth Hour events, we have seen significant reductions in electricity varying from 5% to 23% in Athletics, the Faculty of Engineering and MacOdrum Library when staff and students took up the challenge.

There is no central control for lighting in our buildings on campus (for very good reasons) so we need all of you to do your part and ensure that lights, computers and other items are turned off that evening. Please feel free to shut off any lights that you have access to. There will always automatically be a minimum level of lighting left on for safety reasons. We can centrally control the heating and fan systems in buildings so will be shutting down many of those systems for an hour.

If you are in a class or office on Friday afternoon, make sure you shut off lighting and computers as you leave given that they may not be used through the weekend.
