The Hidden Cost of a New Car

A brand-new car might smell amazing, but that scent comes at a steep price. As soon as you drive it off the lot, your car loses about 10% of its value instantly.

Within the first year, depreciation hits 20%, and after five years, the car is worth only about 40% of its original price. If you buy a $40,000 car today, it will be worth just $16,000 in five years.

BUT this rapid loss in value creates a golden opportunity for those willing to buy secondhand cars.

A 3 to 7-year-old car can still be in excellent condition while costing significantly less. I’ll talk some of the details behind that.

Millionaire‘s Mindset About Buying Cars

In The Millionaire Mind by Thomas Stanley, research shows that wealthy individuals prioritise value and long-term cost-effectiveness over flashy status symbols. Rich people tend to keep their cars longer because they view them as investments, focusing on maximizing their lifespan and getting the most out of them. They also consider how the money saved can be better invested elsewhere. Many millionaires choose to buy cars with cash rather than financing an expensive new vehicle.

I will never forget the time I lived in Sydney, right on the harbour, in a beautiful apartment. My neighbour was a gynaecologist who owned a home likely worth $30–40 million today, as it was already worth several million 20 years ago. Yet, every day, he drove to work in a beat-up old Toyota. I remember thinking, Wow, there’s something to this. Why isn’t he driving a Porsche?

It made me realize there’s truth to what The Millionaire Mind discusses about wealthy individuals—they don’t always flaunt their wealth.

The Financial Breakdown: New vs. Used Cars

Let’s compare three different car buyers:

Mike: Buys a new $50,000 car with a loan interest rate of 7%.

Steve: Buys a $20,000 used car with a loan interest rate of 7%.

James: Buys a $20,000 used car with cash.

Over the life of their loans which 5 and half years on average, here’s what they end up paying:

Mike: $59,800 approximately

Steve: $35,000 approximately

James: $20,000 (paid upfront)

Assuming James invested the money saved from buying a new car, James could turn his savings into $1.8 million by retirement 40 years after with a 10% return interest.

The True Cost Over a Lifetime

This concept is pretty mind-blowing, but it gets even crazier when you consider how often people replace their cars. Many buy their first car in their 20s and then replace it every 10 years. Let’s break down what happens in that scenario.

To be realistic, I’ve based my calculations on a 7% return rather than the S&P 500’s historical average of 10%. The reason? I wanted to account for inflation, which I’ve estimated at 3%, so we’re looking at savings in today’s dollars.

Now, let’s say someone buys their first car at age 20. By making a smarter financial choice, they could save $596,000 over time. Then, as life progresses and they meet a significant other, they start buying two cars instead of one. At age 30, they purchase two cars and invest their savings. By age 40, they do the same—replacing their cars every decade while investing the money saved.

The reason I factor in a 10-year investment period is that the savings accumulate over that time. Even with this conservative 7% return and a 10-year buffer, the final number is still impressive. If you were to invest the savings immediately at 10%, the results would be even more staggering – easily reaching several million dollars.

Honestly, when you run the numbers at 10% with immediate reinvestment, the figures start looking almost unreal. But even with a conservative estimate, the amount saved and invested over a lifetime far exceeds what most people have for retirement.

How a Used Car Can Make You Feel Richer

Many people crave the prestige of a new car, but there’s a hidden joy in owning a used car:

You can perform basic maintenance yourself, like oil changes and wiper replacements, saving money and increasing your connection with the car.

You can customize it—upgrade the stereo, add accessories, and truly make it your own.

Less financial stress—without a hefty car loan, you can allocate money to investments or experiences that improve your quality of life.

I want to share something with you called the IKEA Effect. It’s the idea that when you build or work on something yourself, it holds more meaning and value to you. This applies to cars as well—even if you have no technical skills or interest in car maintenance.

I’d encourage you to start small. Try simple tasks like checking the oil or changing the wiper blades. These little efforts create a sense of investment in your car, making you appreciate it more. I guarantee you’ll feel a greater sense of joy when you drive it.

And it doesn’t stop there – you can also personalize your car with accessories, making it feel even more like your own.

How Much Should You Spend on a Car?

Follow these financial guidelines:

The 25% Rule: The total cost of owning a car (purchase, insurance, maintenance) should not exceed 25% of your annual income.

The 15% Rule: If financing is unavoidable, your monthly car payment should not exceed 15% of your monthly income.

Ideally, you should buy a car with cash, even if that means choosing an older model.

Finding the Best Used Car

When shopping for a used car:

Check the vehicle history report (CARFAX, MOT, etc.) to ensure it hasn’t been in major accidents.

Research common issues for the model you’re considering.

Perform a thorough inspection or get a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic.

Buy a model known for longevity—millionaires prefer cars that last a long time.

Final Thoughts

Buying a new car is a financial trap that keeps people from building real wealth. Instead, choosing a high-quality used car, paying in cash, and investing the savings can lead to financial security—and you’ll still enjoy a reliable, stylish ride. By shifting your mindset, you’ll not only drive a great car but also feel richer every time you get behind the wheel.

Retirement planning can feel stressful, especially if you’re unsure about saving enough. But here’s some good news—you might not need as much as you think! This handy online tool, The 4% Rule Calculator, can give you a clearer picture of your financial future. Let’s break it down and see how it works, step by step.

What’s the 4% Rule?

The 4% rule is a guideline for managing your retirement savings. It suggests you can withdraw 4% of your savings each year without running out of money. The formula is simple:

Multiply your yearly expenses by 25

This number gives you an idea of how much you’ll need in total savings. The rule works because your investments are expected to grow faster than inflation, keeping your money safe in the long run.

How to Use the 4% Rule Calculator

Here’s how you can plan your retirement step by step:

1. Enter Your Details

Age and Retirement Goal: Add your current age and when you want to retire. For instance, if you’re 53 and plan to retire at 60, input those ages.

Current Savings: Include whatever savings you have now—it all adds up.

2. Set Your Life Expectancy

Planning for 100 years is a good way to ensure you don’t underestimate how much you’ll need.

3. Add Social Security or Pensions

Include any benefits you expect, like Social Security or pensions. Use tools specific to your country (like the U.S., Canada, or Australia) to get accurate estimates.

4. Factor in Extra Income

Don’t forget to add in any extra income, like rental property earnings, part-time work, or passive income. These can really boost your savings.

5. Adjust for Inflation and Returns

Input an inflation rate (usually around 3%) and your expected investment returns (typically 7%). Tweak these numbers for a more personalized plan.

A screenshot of fourpercetrule calculator

Cool Features to Try

Flexible Withdrawals: Want to adjust how much you withdraw for specific needs, like college costs or big purchases? This tool can help.

Inheritance Goals: If leaving money for your loved ones is important, you can factor that into your plan.

Downsizing Equity: Thinking of selling your home and downsizing? Add the expected equity to your savings for an extra boost.

You know that dream of retirement we’ve all been sold – the one where you work your tail off for 40+ years and then finally get to live your best life? Yeah… what if I told you it’s kind of a myth? The truth is, the traditional idea of retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. But here’s the good news: more and more people are waking up to this and carving out a better way to live.

In this post, I’ll break down why the old-school retirement plan is falling apart and how you can start building a life that’s meaningful and secure right now.

Retirement is a Lie

When I was 23, I thought I was doing everything “right” – a college degree, solid job, even a company car. But here’s the thing: I was miserable. The thought of grinding through the same routine for the next 40 years made me feel trapped or stuck in life.

So, I made a crazy choice. I quit.

It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it helped me see just how broken the whole idea of retirement is. Let’s break down the biggest retirement myths that simply don’t hold up.

4 Flawed Assumptions About Retirement

“I’ll Be Fine Financially.”
Many of us think saving a certain amount by a certain age will guarantee a comfortable retirement. But here’s the reality: most people, especially those under 35, have barely saved anything. Even older generations are falling short.

Social Security is Enough
Programs like Social Security aren’t guaranteed to sustain us. By 2033, they’re expected to pay out only 79% of scheduled benefits. That means even people who’ve worked their whole lives will struggle to make ends meet.

I Won’t Live Long Enough
People are living well into their 80s and beyond, which is really awesome, and which means your retirement savings need to last much longer than previous generations. This extended lifespan comes mean we need more money to sustain us for longer.

Healthcare Costs are Not an Issue.
Getting older means more doctor visits, medications, and medical expenses. These costs are rising faster than inflation and can quickly eat into retirement savings.

The Real Solution: Find Work You Love

Given these challenges, more people are choosing to “un-retire.” They’re going back to work – not just because they need the money, but because they want a sense of purpose.

Here’s the big takeaway: Instead of grinding away at a job you hate for decades, why not focus on doing work you actually enjoy right now?

Here’s why this works:

It’s Fulfilling. Doing work you love makes life more fulfilling and keeps you connected to a community.

It’s Financially Smart. Enjoyable work you can rely less on savings, social security, or pensions.

It’s Healthy. Staying active and engaged has been shown to help people live longer, healthier lives.

Start Today: Build a Life of Freedom

Joseph Campbell, the author of The Hero’s Journey, once said, “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.” When you live authentically and pursue work you enjoy, you can create happiness and financial stability.

Here’s how you can start:

Discover Your Passion. Stop searching for some grand “purpose.” Focus on what interests you, whether it’s a hobby, skill, or new career path

Create Passive Income. Look for ways to earn money on the side, like investments, rental properties, or online businesses.

Start Saving Now. The sooner you start saving, the more you’ll benefit from compound growth. Even small amounts add up over time.

Final Thoughts

The old idea of retirement – work hard, save up, and enjoy life later – doesn’t work for most people anymore. Instead, the focus should be on creating a life you love now.

When you do work that excites and fulfils you, retirement becomes less of a necessity and more of a choice.

So, what’s stopping you? Start taking small steps toward your dream life today. And if you’re already on this journey, share your story in the comments. Let’s retire the myth of retirement together!

Cheers, and here’s to living life on your terms!

Ever feel trapped in your life or career? You’re not alone. Many of us hit a point where we ask ourselves, Is this really it? It can be overwhelming, but the good news is that you can break free, reignite your passions, and find work that truly excites you. Here’s my story of getting “unstuck” along with some tips to help you do the same.

Playing the Corporate Game

Right after University, I landed what everyone called a “dream job” in engineering – fancy title, company car, and a clear ladder to climb. But within two years, I felt stuck. Climbing the corporate ladder just wasn’t for me.

At 23, I had to make a tough call: stick with the “safe” option or follow my gut and walk away. I chose the later, walking away from stability. Scary? Absolutely. But what followed was an adventurous years of travelling and working across Canada, Costa Rica, and the UK. Those experiences opened my eyes to what really mattered to me: freedom, creativity, and living on my own terms.

Eventually I ran out of money in Costa Rica, but I knew I could get a “holiday work visa” (Tier 5) in the UK and I had enough money for a one way ticket to the UK!

Finding My Feet in Recruitment

Initally I thought I could perhaps get a sort term gig in engineering or possibly waiting tables as I had done in Canada. But while looking for an engineering job I went to a recruitment agency and they asked if I would be interested in working there as a recruitment consultant.

So I stumbled into recruitment – not exactly part of my grand plan, but it turned out to be a game-changer. Recruitment taught me a ton: sales, managing clients, and running a business. Looking back, those skills laid the foundation for something bigger: starting my own business.

After 3 years in recruitment in the UK, I decided I had had enough of working for someone else again and I really wanted to try to build a business.

Building a Business from Passion

So when I returned to Australia, I decided to build something of my own – a SaaS (software-as-a-service) business. Using my experience in recruitment I created a portal for job seekers and recruiters to connect before they arrived in the UK.

Over eight years, I grew it from earning $100,000 a year to $40,000 a month, with the help a small team of part-time contractors but basically a one-man band.

But let me assure you, it wasn’t smooth easy. I was grinding 80-hour weeks and found outsourcing to be a continual learning curve.

Then, ultimately the global financial crisis and Brexit forced me to rethink my strategy.

A New Chapter: Affiliate Income

This was an extremely challenging time from me as I saw my dream basically dissapear around me.

As my SaaS business slowed down, I pivoted to affiliate marketing. By creating SEO-driven content, I built a model where my website generated income through referrals.

And this shift towards SEO gave me the time and freedom I’d been seeing in the first place (Thank you GFC!), allowing me to balance work with mountain biking and eventually family time.

Reinvention: Starting Fresh on YouTube

Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs. Just when I thought I’d figured it all out, another challenge hit: a Google algorithm update that severely impacted my affiliate income. It was a tough blow, but it pushed me to explore something new – YouTube. Though I’m still early in this journey, I’m excited to learn, grow, and share insights that can help others.

What to Do When Feeling Stuck

If you’re feeling stuck, here are three key lessons I’ve learned:

Follow Your Passions and Skills

Think about what excites you and what you’re good at.

Combine your unique skills with your passions to create something valuable.

Build Resilience

Challenges and setbacks are part of the process.

Push through tough times – what Seth Godin calls “the dip”—to reach success.

Stay Flexible

Have a vision, but be ready to adapt when life throws curveballs.

Progress beats perfection. Adjust as you go.

What’s the Secret of Dealing with Feeling Stuck?

Feeling stuck doesn’t have to last forever. With some self-reflection, persistence, and action, you can pivot toward a career and life that inspires you.

I think the key is to start small – whether it’s a side project, a new skill, or exploring a passion. Those little steps will eventually add up to something meaningful.

So, what’s your next step? Think about what excites you, what you’re good at, and how you can make an impact. Then, take that first step, no matter how small.

Your Turn:
Have you ever felt stuck at work? How did you handle it—or how are you planning to? Share your story in the comments—I’d love to hear it!

Today, I want to talk about what it really means to break free from the 9-to-5 routine and start living a life that feels right for you.

I’m sharing this from a pretty awesome spot called Doggy Beach here in Noosa, where people bring their dogs to run free.

It’s the perfect place to reflect on what freedom can look like.

In this post, I’ll be sharing my three major “break-free” moments that helped me leave the daily grind behind. Over the years, I’ve taken a few different paths – from quitting a steady job without any savings to using my skills in a smart way to build financial freedom.

Hopefully, these stories will inspire you wherever you are on your journey to a more independent, fulfilling life.

The First Break: Leaving It All Behind at 23

At 23, I had just started working as an engineer and by society’s standards, I had it all – a solid job, even a company car and good prospects. But, honestly, I felt stuck. The idea of working my way up in the corporate ladder just didn’t sit right. So, I made a bold choice: I quit.

With no real plan, I packed up, left Australia and set off on an adventure across Canada, the U.S., and Central America.

I was open to all kinds of work, but I ended up in hospitality, making more money as a waiter than I had as an engineer. I explored, worked, and got a taste of freedom that I’d never experienced before.

Along the way, I even joined a wildcat rehab project in Costa Rica. Eventually, I ran low on funds and ended up getting a one way ticket to London where I fell into working in recruitment. The funny thing about that job is that I went in to get a different job and they asked if I wanted to work there.

The Second Break: Starting My Own Business at 30

By 30, I had a serious girlfriend (who’s now my wife), and I felt the pull to build some financial stability. I’d saved up about $50,000, half of which I blew on a little convertible back in Australia.

After 3 years in recruitment, I had learned to make sales, run a small team and felt confident enough to give my own business a crack.

I also hated the idea of working for someone else and felt that I had little choice.

That first business taught me a valuable lesson: if you’re thinking about breaking free, start by using the skills you already have. If I was to do it all again I would think about freelancing, consulting, or using your knowledge to help others. It can be a great way to work less, earn more, and have more control over your time.

The Third Break: Earning Passively and Living Cubicle-Free

Today, I make my living through affiliate marketing and content creation. Over the last decade, I’ve built multiple streams of passive income and made investments that let me enjoy a “cubicle-free” lifestyle.

If I were to start all over today, I’d still look for side hustles that don’t demand too much time or money upfront. Think about your skills and passions and find ways to monetize them with minimal investment. Freelancing, consulting, and content creation are great options to consider if you’re aiming for a life beyond the 9-to-5.

The Key: Mindset and Self-Belief

Breaking away from the 9-to-5 world mostly comes down to your mindset. I recently added meditation to my morning routine, picturing myself as a confident, skilled creator. I’m still new to it and adjusting to speaking in front of the camera, but I’m out of my comfort zone (learning) and connecting with others who are on a similar journey.

If you’re considering making this leap, remember that mindset is everything. Believe in the value you bring to the world. Whether it’s a side hustle or a career change, focus on what makes you unique. For me, it’s all about sharing my journey of living cubicle-free and inspiring others to do the same.

So, where are you now on your own journey to freedom? Are you just starting out, exploring a new idea, or trying to take your side hustle to the next level? Drop your thoughts in the comments – I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks for reading. Cheers to living life on your own terms!

Ever feel like you’re just going through the motions, stuck in a cycle that’s going nowhere?

I’ve been there too.

My wake-up call came in the middle of a workday as I stared at a cow walking by – it might sound strange, but ultimately it was clear to me that that cow who just going about her business – seemed way happier than me.

How did I get to this?

I wondered why I felt that way and I realised that everything that had happened to me was 100% my own choice.

The long stressful days, the unfulfilling work, the feelings that it was my bosses and customers who were in control – not me. Meanwhile, the cow did have to give up her milk each day and she did have a life of service to humanity but for the most part, she wandered happily through the fields all day.

And that is what finally snapped me out of autopilot. The cow didn’t have much choice – but I did!

The Rat Race Was Slowly Killing Me: My Rollercoaster Journey in Engineering

Like a lot of people, I grew up believing that success meant good grades, university (or college for you Americans), and landing a stable job. I pushed myself through the hardest math classes in high school, thinking they’d be my ticket to a solid future.

Even just getting into University for me was a struggle. I distinctly remember my year eleven math teacher handing back a math test, and in front of the whole class said said, “Quinn, you’ll do well in life… just not here. Maybe in the arts department.” I was gutted! But I used it like rocket fuel to get serious about studying.

Somehow I got into engineering school and managed to graduate in 4 years, despite the odds. But just as I was ready to launch my career, the 1992 recession hit, and the job interviews (I’d worked so hard to get) just vanished overnight.

Desperate for a shot, I moved to a bigger city and spent months working as a waiter while I read a book titled, “What Color is Your Parachute” and the job hunt became a life of its own. Eventually, after calling some employers offering to volunteer, I got a gig managing a concrete plant—trucks, crews, tight deadlines, the whole deal.

The stress was relentless, and it started to wear me down. I was managing a team and coordinating a fleet of trucks – a role that came with a lot of stress. The pressure to stay on schedule was constant as project managers were quick to remind me that any delays would cost my company penalties.

Every day was a challenge, but some days were insane – one time a truck caught fire, on another day one tipped over with a full load of concrete and when it was raining another day I had trucks slide off and ended up in ditch.

The most stressful moment came from a mistake I made with the concrete mix. Because of the hot climate, we had to add a special additive to slow the setting time so the concrete stayed workable longer. Without realizing it, I’d added the retarder twice, doubling its effect.

A few days later, I got a call that my batch hadn’t gone hard. And this wasn’t just any concrete; it was for a bridge pylon, a key part of the structure’s foundation. Construction didn’t stop, more formwork got added and more steel – ready for the next lot of concrete. For a month, I was shitting bricks, hoping the 30-day test would somehow show it had set properly. Thankfully, when the results came in, it passed and the bridge project was moving ahead as planned. The only thing lost was a few years of my life.

Then the cow incident.

That was it – I realized I needed to start living life on my own terms, not just chasing what I thought I “should” be doing.

For me, I didn’t really have a plan and I traveled overseas.

Honestly, it all worked out great, but in retrospect and after many years in recruitment, I realise a simple plan would have been far more effective at putting me on the right track faster.

And that is what these next five steps are:

Five Steps to Live Life on Your Terms

Picture Where You’re Headed Take a minute to imagine where your current path is leading. Write it down in detail. Does this path actually make you happy? If you keep following it, where will you be in five years?

Dream Up Your Ideal Life Forget about what seems realistic for a second—just picture the life you want. Imagine how it’d feel to wake up excited to start the day. This step isn’t about the “how”; it’s just about creating a vision that inspires you.

Figure Out Your Why Your “why” is what’ll keep you moving forward. Whether it’s wanting more freedom, personal happiness, or to make a difference, let that be the thing that motivates you. For me, the idea of staying in a draining job where I could not imagine a happy future self was worse than any risk of leaving it behind.

Make a Rough Plan After my “cow moment,” I decided to travel, working in hospitality in Canada and later as a recruiter in the UK which ultimately led me to work in my own business. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s just moving forward. If you’re young, like I was it can be helpful to remember that new jobs, different countries, and creating businesses is a hell of a lot easier when you don’t have a mortgage to pay, school fees and whatever else life brings. If you’ve got bigger responsibilities that can be great too because now you have some great experience to use. Look for options like side hustles, consulting or even freelancing that don’t require burning any bridges but where you can learn the many other things you will need to be successful in your new endeavor.

Start with One Small Step This part is everything. What’s one small action you could take today that aligns with your vision? Maybe it’s starting a side hustle, saving a buffer for the big day when you tell your boss to find someone else, or signing up for a course that will put you on a better path. Each small move will get you closer to the life you actually want.

Breaking free from the nine-to-five isn’t easy, but it’s possible. I hope these steps give you the nudge to start building a path that feels right for you. Thanks for reading, and here’s to creating a future that’s all your own!

In this article, I want to share how I have been creating passive income in a way that multiplies my efforts so that I can retire early.

But first;

What is Passive Income?

Passive income is the opposite of active income.

Instead of trading time for dollars, passive income is about setting up income streams that continue to pay you with little to no ongoing effort. It’s income that flows in regularly, freeing up your time for other things you enjoy.

While passive income sounds like a dream, there’s a strategy to make it a reality, and it typically involves two key approaches.

Best of all you can use one method to supercharge the other – effectively compounding your results.

Let’s dive into these passive income ideas and explore how you can start generating passive income yourself.

Method #1: Traditional Investments

The first approach to passive income is by investing in assets that naturally generate income over time. Here are a few classic ways to do this:

Dividend-Paying Stocks: By investing in companies that pay dividends, you can earn a portion of the profits without needing to be actively involved in the business. Dividend income is usually paid quarterly and can build up over time if you reinvest it.

I personally invest in growth stocks without dividends because the total returns are better but dividend-growth stocks can lead to a high total returns and may be better for other investors.

Rental Properties: Real estate is another popular passive income source. When you buy a property and rent it out, you receive rental income each month. Although managing properties and maintenance requires some effort (or cash to pay others to do it), the cash flow can become largely passive once set up.

Personally I have struggled to find realestate investments that have positive cash flow – but I did invest in a tiny house that is one of the best investments I have ever made.

High-Interest Savings Accounts: Though the returns may be lower, high-yield savings accounts or bonds can provide a consistent stream of passive income without any active involvement.

Keeping some cash for when the market goes on sale can be a very good idea and lately the returns have been pretty reasonable too!

The downside? To achieve a level of passive income substantial enough to live on, you’d need significant upfront capital, often in the range of hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. For most people, this may not be feasible.

That’s where the second method of passive income comes into play.

Method #2: Invest in Yourself and Create Evergreen Content

The second method involves investing time and effort upfront to create something that can earn you money long-term. This approach is ideal for those who may not have a lot of capital but are willing to put in the work to create assets with lasting value.

Here are a few ways to do it:

YouTube Videos: If you create valuable content on YouTube, it can continue to generate ad revenue long after you’ve uploaded it. With YouTube’s monetization program, each view brings in a small amount of income, which can add up over time, especially if you grow a substantial audience.

Of course there are many other way Youtubers leverage their efforts: Courses, Affiliate Marketing, Sponsorships are great ways to increase your Youtube efforts.

Affiliate Marketing Websites: By building a website that incorporates affiliate links, you can earn commissions when visitors click on your links and make purchases. To succeed, I think the easiest way is to learn SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to attract consistent traffic to your site. Once it’s set up, your site can passively generate income for years.

All that being said, AI and recent changes to the Google Algorithm have been playing havoc with the livelihood of content creators such as myself and despite my main income source losing 95% of its’ traffic I have found a way to still earn income from SEO and affiliate links through sites that did not get penalised by the “Helpful Content Update”.

Ebooks and Online Courses: If you have the knowledge to share, creating an ebook or an online course can be a fantastic way to earn passive income. You invest time upfront to write or film content, and once it’s available online, sales can trickle in over time with minimal upkeep.

I have created Ebooks in the past but without much success. For me going forward I can see great opportunities in the online courses space.

The Magic of Compounding Passive Income

The real beauty of passive income happens when you combine these two methods. Here’s how it works:

Start by creating assets like YouTube videos, websites, or digital products that generate passive income with upfront effort.

Live below your means and reinvest the income you generate into traditional investments like dividend-paying stocks or rental properties.

As you reinvest earnings, you’re creating a cycle where your passive income itself starts to earn even more passive income—a process known as compounding.

Over time, this cycle can significantly increase your income without requiring additional work. You’re essentially building a financial ecosystem where your income streams create “offspring,” multiplying your cash flow.

Embrace Passive Income and Live on Your Own Terms

Generating passive income doesn’t just boost your bank balance; it gives you the freedom to live life on your terms.

Whether you dream of traveling, spending more time going for long walks, or simply having the flexibility to work on projects you’re passionate about, passive income can make it possible.

If you’re ready to start your journey, remember that it’s all about setting the foundation now, whether through traditional investments or creating content that stands the test of time.

Here’s to a future where your money works for you, not the other way around!

Struggling to Grow your Business Online?

You are not alone.

I recently had the pleasure of attending a workshop in Brisbane with Chris Guillebeau for the launch of his latest book, “Side Hustle”.

Chris Guillebeau says, “the first step is to not quit your job”.

I reckon this is damn good advice but what about established businesses trying to grow online?

Back to the workshop though because it mirrored real business – about 20% of those attending already had businesses but (like many people I meet through coaching) they had hit a road block along the way.

Here is what happens:

Tremendous Achievement #1

A reasonable percentage of committed people experience success with a few sales or maybe some income thanks to their creativity and tenacity. You rock!

But there is a catch.

Most people have to work through the next achievement.

Tremendous Achievement #2

At the same time, they manage to keep their job, their spouses/partners, kids and friends… maybe even their sanity.

I half joke, because for many entrepreneurs the challenge is that they may find themselves very time poor and feel like they are far from the side hustle incomes they first dreamt of.

If you find yourself at this point what ever you do – DO NOT give up!

Help is at hand – right here on this page.

Tremendous Achievement #3

This is where we break through and turn our side hustles into the income and life we dreamt of in the first place.

What’s the real story?

For most people “overnight success” takes years – but it can take months.

How long it takes is a combination of three factors.

Now in my 17th year of working for myself on multiple side hustles and having helped many others, I have had to work through each factor many times and I always find that when a side hustle is not working it is usually because of one of these three factors not being right.

3 Side Hustle Factors

You Inc.

What You Want

What Others Want

Each factor deserves some explanation, but ultimately when you find the sweet spot some truly amazing things happen because you end up aligned with universe doing profitable stuff that has an inherent positive feedback loop built in.

Let’s take a deep dive into what makes for a really great side hustle.

Factor 1. You Inc.

Have you ever noticed that some people seem completely happy in their work and they are awesome at it?

Does this leave you wondering “what the hell is wrong with me”?

Well it did with me – for years!

I used to call that seemingly successful few “wankers” or if I could not help but really like them “lucky bastards”.

At some point, I must have decided to own the fact that they had something figured out that I didn’t.

Truth is, I think some people are just bloody lucky. But the majority have to figure it out the hard way.

There are two elements to You Inc.

Your superpowers – this is often the stuff we don’t realize we even possess. But once we do we become unstoppable.

Who you are – our core values – what makes us sing and what we stand for.

This is where side hustles are amazing. Because like a truth detector if we tap into our superpowers AND who we are – a LOT of good things can happen seemingly miraculously. Call it alignment, call it what you want.

I hope you can see how these two elements combine like adding fuel to raging fire. When you know how to tap into your own unique superpowers AND you apply it in a way that makes your heart sing – holy shit – let’s have some fun.

Factor 2. What You Want

I recently came to a startling revelation.

For the past couple years, I have been grappling with the “living in the moment” movement versus having goals and doing good stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I do think it is great to be able to stare at our navels while imagining sparks flying out our arse.

Seriously though, I do believe we can learn a lot from just being in the now and I love it.

But that does not pay school fees!

On the other hand I think goals can be very powerful and enable us to work towards things that give us meaning. However I found that they just weren’t serving me in isolation.

The problem is that goals – SMART Goals (no less) are meant to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.

To be effective they have to be SMART.

But they actually miss something really bloody important.

Goals simply don’t and can’t take into consideration the whole picture. They can’t account for us being human beings – not human doings.

Let me quickly explain – we as humans actually perform better and enjoy life more when we are happy and in a joyful (short term happiness) state or working towards something that has meaning (long term happiness).

But what happens when we ‘chase’ goals is that we can end up living in the future, in a state of unease, and at worst perpetual disappointment.

As author Oliver Burkeman points out in “The Antidote“, “The effort to try to feel happy is often precisely the thing that makes us miserable and it is our constant efforts to eliminate the negative in security, uncertainty, failure or sadness that is what causes us to feel so insecure, anxious, uncertain or unhappy.”

I recon answer lies in the wisdom of Buddha.

Buddha says,

“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.”

But being a visual kind of guy I came up with this;

“live in the present moment” and you can have JOY.

“live… earnestly.” and you can live with MEANING.

For example, picking up a little baby can give us joy but raising a child sometimes does not. But raising a child can often give us loads of meaning.

What we really want is both in balance. Too much of one without the other and you find yourself either not actually doing anything (just experiencing joy) or working too hard (just work towards the things that give us meaning) and we run the risk of burn out.

Through the “Happiness Balance” I find I can live both with ample daily joy as well as with meaning and chosing the struggles you want.

But the beautiful thing about a balance is that they can grow together!

The more daily joy you have the more you are likely to achieve bigger goals that have meaning. You are not forcing anything when you in a state of joy.

The secret is to have not to continuously work on your goals or try and achieve daily joy continuously – the secret is a balance.

We allow struggle – because it is the right struggle.

People are attracted to us because we are brave.

We fail. We cry. We love. And yep – we die. But maybe more people turn up to our funeral.

Good shit happens because we allow it – we ARE it.

Factor 3. What Others Want

To have a good business we need to do something that people want to pay for.

We also need to be in a market that is big enough.

The big challenge here is that our dreams combine with many old beliefs, add in slick marketers and everything gets tangled together into business ideas that bare no resemblance to what will work for us.

Chris recommends flexing our idea muscles. So does James.

We need to come up with our own ideas, we need to learn from our efforts and ultimately we need to meet the needs of all three factors.

You Inc.

What You Want

What Other Want

Apart from having the potential to become much more than a side hustle, working with these three factors can be just a really kick arse way to live. But I believe that if done the right way, they have the potential not to just make great money but to live with connection, meaning and passion too.

After all isn’t that what we really all seek?

“FIND YOUR PURPOSE!”

So sick of hearing these words put together because there seems to be so many ways to find IT.

Yet I still so badly want IT – whatever MY PURPOSE was supposed to be…

Of course many of us live lives of quiet desperation or worse. Frustrated by our crappy jobs, sick of our circumstances, helpless, confused and feeling trapped. We wonder if you will ever find our “Purpose”.

For me it became like finding mythical creatures. I thought I saw glimpses… well maybe – I definitely felt its presence though. That I can say for sure. Well maybe. Come to think of it – maybe the beer I was drinking at the time had something to do with it.

Damnit!

Finally I had enough and instead of focusing on the next method I decided to take matter in my own hands and I started focusing on hobbies and interests – some that I had long since let go.

At least with these felt like I would find something joyful – who knows where it would lead.

Then something strange happened.

Joy happened. Inexplicable flow. Maybe this was it? Could it be so simple?

Then by chance I picked up a book that caught my eye on the shelf while looking for another.

I would not normally have even considered it – especially due to its cheap cover art and the fact that it used the most cliche’d words in the world – “Boot Camp” and “Purpose” and “Life”.

Dear God, could it be more repellent to people jaded from the search?

And so “Life Purpose Boot Camp” by Eric Maisel came into my life.

So I made a video.

As the video discusses, individuals often try to find meaning by trying to participate in tasks that are considered meaningful. But as Eric discusses, this is the wrong way of trying to find meaning and purpose in life because something that may feel meaningful today will not necessarily feel as meaningful tomorrow.

There are no such guarantees in life especially when “meaning” is an emotion.

He believes that a more appropriate term to use in this case would be ‘meaning opportunities’. This allows us to manage our expectations when beginning an activity and also allows us to be emotionally detached from it to a certain degree. That way, when it begins to lose meaning or when it does not turn out the way we expected it to; we will not feel as disappointed as we would have been.

There are a few steps we can take to make sure that we can take to allow us to have meaning and purposeful lives. The first is to always write down all past and present activities that we consider meaningful and important. Writing them down changes everything because it prompts us to take a moment and reflect. Through this reflection, we will be able to think critically about the different activities we have participated in throughout our lives and separate them with regard to the above named criteria. Making this separation allows us to create a list of activities that we genuinely enjoy and are unlikely to regret even if they do not turn out as expected.

Once they have been written down, wecan proceed to pick out different activities to do each day. The author states that when we have such a list and alternate between the activities on the list, we will be able to continuously find purpose and meaning in our lives. We will have created a cycle where every action we take is taken with the aim of fulfilling a task that we hold dear.

We will be able to approach life wit

h purpose and value everything we do which in turn reduces the amount of time spent wondering whether we are doing the right thing or not. In the book, the author refers to this process as creating ‘meaning investments’. This makes sure that we know there is a chance we might not get what we expected but it should not reduce our enthusiasm and does not reflect poorly on our lives.

The second step is to design your perfect day. By that, the author means that you should write down what you consider the most fulfilling activities that can be achieved in a single day. Although it is close to impossible to make sure that we only do what we consider important and fulfilling, this exercise will allow us to figure out what we truly hold dear and what we consider mundane.

After this is done, we will need to space out these activities. For example, if you love to paint, you should set aside a certain number of hours each week to focus on painting. Increasing the frequency of activities that we find meaningful is sufficient to make a change to our perception of life.

Another common misconception most people have about finding meaning in life is monetary gains. Whenever we do something, we tend to think about how much money we are likely to make/ lose while we are at it. This school of thought eventually alters how we think and how we approach activities which make a lot of things lose value. Not everything we do in life is about the money. It is possible for individuals to participate in activities that have absolutely no monetary gain but matter enough to make a change in our lives and in that of others. For example, community service is not profitable when it is viewed from a business perspective. However, it is one of the best ways to make sure that our community is safe and acceptable to the society.

Last but not least, we should also write down all the areas that we would like to improve on in our daily lives. These activities may range from learning a new language to spending more time with our loved ones. One should always have a mental picture of whom they are and who they would like to be, and then follow through by taking steps to ensure that he or she is closer to that image each day. With this kind of activity, there should not be any timelines or deadlines. Deadlines tend to create unnecessary anxiety that is distracting and will prevent one from enjoying the process. All one has to do is to create smaller milestones to be achieved periodically that will eventually lead to the ultimate goal of being the best versions of ourselves. It is impossible to go wrong with self improvement exercises.

Trying to find meaning and purpose in life is something that should not be taken for granted. A lot of people deal with this problem in their day to day lives and some take drastic measures just to try and find purpose.

There is no need for it.

Following the steps allows you to manage your time and change your mindset which will in turn give purpose and meaning to your life each day.

Now we can all be human again and stop seeking mythical creatures!

The alternative to wasting heaps of money getting “training” and learning how to chase shiny objects while making bugger all.

So many guys telling you how to make money online this way or that way… and affiliate marketing could be the worst.

Well here is the truth.

When you do it their way – there is a good chance it is not your way.

Watch this video first:

Here is the thing about affiliate marketing, there are loads of different ways to make it work – different platforms and different ways to get traffic and different ways to convert that traffic into sales.

What I have found works best though is simply to remember that affiliate marketing is a business and that we are an individuals with specific skills, interests and experience.

When we can tap into who we are as individuals and focus on what needs to happen for business to happen we are far further ahead with little competition.
