On Momentum

Anybody else think this has been a bizarre season so far? The Cubs have been as streaky as Tyrus Thomas’ jump shot this summer. Split 2 and 4-game series, winning and then losing 2 out of 3 in consecutive series. An awesome 4-game comeback-infused winning streak bookended by a couple of 3-game [...]

Derrek Lee’s “Caberlee” Charity Event Recap & Photos

Yesterday Cubscast was fortunate to be invited to cover a charity event hosted by Derrek Lee and Mark Buehrle, and it was a blast. It was organized by Charity Wines, an organization that has helped raised over $1 million for charity to date by partnering with some of the best and most generous players [...]

The Jim Hendry Scorecard

I’m a fan of Cubs GM Jim Hendry, and really like him, but one of the enjoyable aspects of being a baseball fan is second guessing the moves your team’s general manager makes. It’s easy to grumble when a player misses a hanging curveball, but let’s be honest here, you or I would have [...]

For Soriano, It’s Time to Choose Your Own Adventure

There much to be said about yesterday’s devastating 6-5 loss to the Braves, and without a doubt today’s episode of Cubscast (we’re recording in a couple hours) is going to be pretty lively. Going from a no-hitter and 5-run lead and ending the game the way the Cubs did was excruciating, and though it [...]

Tough to Find a Cubs All-Star?

The comparisons of this year’s Cubs team to last year’s repeat division-winning team have been constant this season, and at times stifling. It says a lot that you can hear an audible groan in our episodes whenever Mark DeRosa’s name is uttered. I thought that all the “what would have been”-type talk would [...]

Tipping the Scales

As Sheps and I discussed in today’s episode (download mp3), the feel-good story so far of 2009 is obviously the emergence of Bobby Scales for the Cubs. Scales’ 4 RBIs yesterday combined with the other clutch hitting and solid performance from Dempster made that game my favorite to watch so far this season.

Before the [...]

RIP R-L-R-L-R-L?

Just a few minutes ago the Trib reported that Alfonso Soriano is leaving his leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup for tonight’s game vs. the Cardinals. I guess that’s news around the Cubs water cooler — what with Hendry and Piniella fielding constant questions on the matter from fans ever since Alfonso became a [...]

Opening Day 2009 Is Here

We can’t wait for 6 PM tonight as Big Z will be taking the mound for his 5th consecutive Opening Day start, this time vs. Roy Oswalt and the ‘Stros. Carlos looked great throughout spring training, so I’m excited to see him carry it over to this new season. If he gets through [...]
