The streets are bare and coffee shop lines nonexistent. It is summer at CU-Boulder, but don’t let the lack of lines fool you, Summer Session is in session.

Many of CU’s most popular and sought-after courses are offered during Summer Session. Students can earn credits, keep up with major requirements, improve their GPAs, and still enjoy summer.

Summer Session offers a wide range of courses, throughout a series of terms. Maymester is a three-week intensive term offered May 14-June 1. Session A, C, and D begin June 4 and Session B begins July 10. The courses are rigorous yet the schedule is flexible, so students can learn on their terms.

Summer Session was featured in the May 17 editions of the Daily Camera and Colorado Daily.

CU student Fredrico Gomez is taking Maymester and summer classes to keep up with the requirements for his three majors. He told the Colorado Daily his summer credits will help him stay on track to graduate in four years.

“One of the biggest reasons I wanted to graduate in the four years was so I could walk with my class,” Gomez said in a Colorado Daily article. “So, I came up with a plan that would help me finish with them.”

The Daily Camera sat in on a course with Terry Mills, FIRST scholar and professor of sociology from Morehouse College. FIRST (Faculty-in-Residence Summer Term) brings prestigious, world-class faculty to the CU campus to offer one-of-a-kind courses. This is Mills’ second time at CU as a FIRST scholar. This summer, he is leading a Maymester course, “Environment and Society,” and collaborating with CU sociology faculty on research projects, which further strengthens relations between CU-Boulder and Morehouse College.

The students are the first cohort to complete CU’s Pre-Medical Post-Baccalaureate Program.

The rigorous program is designed for “career changers” who were academically successful as undergraduates and have completed a bachelor’s degree but have not completed the prerequisite courses needed to apply to medical and other healthcare-related professional schools. The requirements for admission into medical and health science programs are steep, and this program helps students prepare with course work, MCAT support, individual advising, and more.

Pre-Med Post-Baccalaureate student Brendan Culverwell followed in his father’s footsteps when he chose a degree in mathematics as an undergraduate.

“Math was the easy choice, since I didn’t really know what I wanted to do at the time,” Culverwell told the Daily Camera. ”One day I realized I didn’t love math so I decided to go into the medical field,” he said.

To recognize their accomplishments, Culverwell and his classmates will receive certificates of completion from CU-Boulder Continuing Education. The Pre-Medical Post-Baccalaureate Program will welcome 20 new students in June 2012.

CU-Boulder is hosting 19 students from Brazil this semester as part of the new Science Without Borders Program and Brazil’s initiative to place and fully fund outstanding students abroad to supplement their studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM.

The students are among approximately 650 Brazilian undergraduates who have been selected to study on U.S. campuses with funding from the Brazilian government. Science Without Borders Program, announced last year, provides scholarships to Brazilian undergraduates for one year of study. After two semesters and an on- or off-campus internship, the students will return to Brazil to complete their degrees.

The Science Without Borders Program at CU-Boulder is offered through a partnership between the Division of Continuing Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Engineering and Applied Science. This first cohort of students are studying with their peers, living in university housing, and adjusting to life in Colorado and the U.S.

Here, a few of the Science Without Borders students reflect on their experiences at CU so far.

Pedro de Paiva Romeiro
Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro

“I was expecting a good university and was very happy after choosing CU. I was grateful the IIE matched me with this opportunity, and I was especially pleased with the beautiful campus. I am looking forward to possibly working in a mechanical engineering lab as a lab assistant. It couldn’t be better. One thing I would bring to my home country and university is the culture of donation that Americans have here and this culture that every person is linked to the university for the rest of their lives. For me this tradition is amazing.”

Lucas Gustavo
Universidade Federal de Alagoas

“I was interested in studying abroad and when Science Without Borders became available, I took advantage of the opportunity. It’s been cold here but the mountains are a great sight. I had never seen snow before. I am taking two engineering courses at CU Boulder and have spent more time studying by myself then I had at home. The classes are great, and I am appreciating my other classes too. I am looking forward to being involved in research and an internship and other different kinds of experiences.”

Victor Sabioni
Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

“Science Without Borders interested me because I wanted to know what it was like to study and live on campus and to learn in a different environment. CU is better than I expected. The campus is amazingly beautiful and everyone has been so welcoming and polite. I chose subjects that interest me. Not all of the courses are within my aerospace engineering major, but they relate to my major. I am taking two classes that are not offered at home, and everything is great so far. CU couldn’t be better. It’s like heaven with homework.”

John-Patrick Samson was featured in a Daily Camera article and video about CU’s preparation for an anticipated increase in veteran enrollment next fall. Watch the Daily Camera’s video featuring Samson and the Student Veterans Association during their volunteer day at the Fitzsimons Veterans Nursing Home on March 4. Before he graduated in 2011, Samson was a Continuing Education student and co-founder of the CU chapter of the Student Veterans Association.

“While deployed in Iraq, I decided I wanted to finish my degree and contacted Continuing Education,” he said. “They helped me find a flexible program with online Independent Learning classes, so I could attend school while being deployed. When I returned to Colorado, I became a regular student on the main campus.”

Kudos to John-Patrick, and the Student Veterans Association!
