Achieving a culinary diploma through various means such as distance learning, online programs of going to cooking school or community college.

There’s no reason for anyone to worry about their future, not where anyone can get a culinary diploma for an accredited cooking school in their area. These schools are available all around the world with hundreds of schools located in the United States. Students take classes that prepare them for working with food, working in a kitchen and teach them recipes they can use for years to come.

Many people worry that they simply can’t find a culinary diploma because they live in a small area, but that no longer holds true. Once upon a time the biggest schools offerings classes in the cooking arts were located in large cities like New York, Paris and Los Angeles. However today there are similar programs located in cities and towns all around the world. Even if a student lives in a small town, they may still be able to take classes to learn more about this world.

There are a number of smaller cooking schools located in small towns that work with one of the larger schools. Community colleges are one of the first places an individual should look if they want to pursue cooking as a career. Many community colleges offer programs in the food arts field, which allow students to learn basic skills before moving forward in their career.

What if there aren’t any community colleges in my area that offer this type of arts degree? That’s a question that many people might ask themselves, but there’s still an answer. Those students can receive a culinary diploma through a distance learning or online program. It might sound hard to believe, but there are schools offering this type of program and it works quite well.

This type of program works by allowing the student to do much of the cooking and coursework from the comfort of their own home. Students learn through using online tutorials and traditional book learning, but branch out on their own to create the actual food. Pictures of the recipes and videos of the cooking techniques are then uploaded onto the school website. This new type of teaching food arts online is quickly becoming one of the more popular ways of obtaining a culinary diploma.

The creation and sharing of the food arts world is a magical thing that anyone can experience. With the advent of the internet and the expansion of traditional teaching methods, anyone in the world can receive their culinary diploma as long as they’re willing to put in the time and effort.

There are three options an aspiring chef can take on his or her road to become a professional cook. This article will discuss those options.

So you are interested in the possibility of becoming a chef? You probably have many questions and are probably wondering what route to take. Are there any requirements for becoming a chef? What education is needed for becoming a chef?

As the title of this article suggests, you basically have two options toward becoming a chef and learning the fundamentals of cooking. There are actually three options, but we will discuss the third later in this article. You can either go straight to Culinary School and learn the art of cooking under the close supervision of educated Chefs, or you can head out into the real world and learn hands on cooking techniques in a fast paced restaurant setting. We will now discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both options.

ON THE JOB LEARNING

The Advantages

The traditional method for becoming a chef was quite different years ago. One did not attend a Culinary School first before they began working. Instead, a person learned by working from the bottom up. This gave the cook hands-on real world experience, something not readily available in cooking schools today. This real world experience is more respected then a student fresh out of Culinary School, and I am sure you can understand why. A restaurant owner is not going to be impressed by a resume filled with all of the classes you took in cooking school. He or she will be more interested in whether or not you can perform in a busy and stressful kitchen environment, and you will only gain that experience by living and doing it on the job.

The Disadvantages

Working on the job also has its disadvantages. In a restaurant environment there is one main objective and that is to prepare quality dishes in a timely manner so that the customer is satisfied. Your head chef and co-workers do not have time to explain how a dish is made, or the history and culture behind the food that is prepared. It is simply too busy. So you will have to seek out your education on your own, unless of course someone is willing to take the time and teach you, but this is rarely the case.

CULINARY SCHOOL EDUCATION

The advantages of Attending a Cooking School

Culinary school can be a truly rewarding experience if you keep your eyes and ears open and apply yourself. There is much to be learned and exposed to. This is where the history, culture and techniques regarding the preparation of the food comes into play.

You can learn where the dish came from and the variety of ways to create certain dishes. You can learn how to purchase and store your ingredients. You get to work together with other students as a team, which is a very important factor in the success of your career. You may never see or prepare these dishes again, but the techniques that you pick up in Culinary School can be applied to many of the dishes that you create in the future.

Depending on the school you attend, your curriculum may include topics like pastry, nutrition, management, butchery and more. You can also receive job placement assistance. You will learn more about the various culinary organizations out there, scholarships and other programs that may be useful.

The Disadvantages of Cooking School

For the most part, a Culinary school education is theoretical learning. Cooking school is not going to prepare you for the busy and stressful environment of a real world kitchen, and this lack of preparation may present a problem when you start looking for a job.

Culinary Students have also acquired a bad reputation over the years unfortunately. The popular opinion is that graduates from cooking schools are in no way prepared to handle the stress of a busy kitchen. Why have Culinary Students been given such a bad reputation? It is because many have tried and quit when the going got rough. So the only way to overcome this is to prove yourself. You will have to dedicate yourself no matter how hard things get.

Lastly there is the cost associated with a Culinary School Education. It can be very expensive. Not only do you have to pay tuition, but you also have to pay for your books, tools and other accessories. Things can really add up. If you decide that it is not the right career path for you, you will have lost a lot of money.

GOING TO SCHOOL + ON THE JOB TRAINING

Now on to the third option that I told you we would cover later in this article: working on the job while you are attending cooking school. The advantage to this option is that you will be practicing what you are learning in school. You get to truly experience it and not just read about it in some textbook.

This is by far the best option of course but not for everyone. There will be many sacrifices when taking this route toward becoming a chef. Holding a job while going to school will be very difficult. You will be exhausted both physically and mentally, and if you do not work extra hard, your grades will suffer. If your grades suffer, then you may get less attention from your instructors. On the flip side, you may impress your instructors with your hard work and interest.

So whatever path you choose, remember the most important thing is perseverance. Without staying power and patience you will have a difficult time making it as a chef. I wish you all the best and God Bless.

One of the constants, without question, is a person’s need to eat. Surprisingly, even fine dining establishments do well in both inclement and prosperous times, rarely feeling the crunch of economic uncertainty. This affects not only their availability for patrons, but for employees as well. From wait staff to hosts, expediters to managers, fine dining establishments keep quite a few people gainfully employed. Lately, however, they are encountering a problem of a different nature, namely, finding and keeping a head chef.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Job openings for chefs, cooks, and food preparation workers are expected to be plentiful through 2014″. While positions in well known eateries will always be competitive and highly coveted, there are several options available for those with the culinary know how to put together a menu that can define an establishment. Those who have graduated from culinary training schools are quickly learning that there are more choices than ever when it comes to where they wish to hone their skills. In fact, it’s not at all uncommon for recent culinary school graduates to receive job offers from restaurants they have never heard of prior to graduation, some of which may be located overseas.

Because there are so few culinary training institutes around the globe, restaurant owners and managers often find that the easiest way to find the right personnel is by going straight to the source. Local, regional or national advertising may yield a qualified candidate, but with competition for head chefs at at all time high, soliciting soon to be graduates can be a wise strategy. Considering how few experienced chefs there are who are not currently holding a position, it’s no wonder that demand is eclipsing supply and forcing restaurateurs to snatch up chefs as they are receiving their diplomas.

For the immediate future, job openings should be plentiful for those with the proper training. If the world’s penchant for palate pleasing fair continues unabated as it has since the invention of fire, this is one trend that is always likely to continue.

This article will provide you with some tips when searching for the right Culinary School.

So you are thinking about attending a Culinary School? I am assuming that is the reason you are reading this article. I will certainly do my best to guide you toward reaching your goals and finding the perfect Culinary education. There are many factors to consider when looking for the right Cooking School. Is the school of choice an accredited institution? Do they offer some type of job placement? These are just a few of the topics we will be talking about in this article.

Degrees and Certificates

You will have to carefully study your schools academic programs to find out which one best suits your goals. Not every school has the exact same academic programs. One school may offer Associate and Bachelor’s Degree programs, while another school will only offer diploma or certificate courses. One school may offer Externship programs where you can make real world contacts and sharpen your skills, while others do not. So it will benefit you greatly if you take time out to carefully review every schools academic program before you open your checkbook.

The Curriculum

Once you figure out what degree or program you will be going for, you will then have to review the actual courses within that program. This is probably the most important part of your decision. Make certain they offer classes that cover the basics of cooking like: Working with Knives, Fruits & Vegetables, Wet & Dry Heat Cooking, Baking, Stocks & Sauces, Salads & Dressings, Meats, Fish, Poultry, Starches and Safety. These are all key topics that will help you tremendously in the real world. If the school you are interested in does not cover these topics then look elsewhere. Apart from these basic cooking topics, your school will more than likely offer more classes. This of course depends on how much you are paying them and can include courses on wines, business and management, pastries, nutrition etc.

When you are studying your schools curriculum see if they give any information on the size and format of the classes. You will want a classroom environment where you will be able to participate. Some class formats are demonstration only, meaning the instructor will cook the dish and you watch with your hands in your pocket. Make sure your classroom format includes you actually doing some of the cooking. Also, be sure to ask about class size. The larger the class, the less individual attention you will receive.

The Instructors

Find out who your instructors are. Interview them if you have to. Find out their background, how long they have been an instructor and why they became an instructor. This may sound like a lot of work, but you will be very happy you took time out to learn more about your teachers. After all, you are paying big bucks for a quality education and you deserve the best instructors that money can buy.

Accreditation

When searching for the right culinary arts school, make certain that you look for a school that is accredited. An accredited school is thoroughly examined by a third party to determine that the facility’s services and operations are in good working order. Things like curriculum, faculty and the schools facilities are all carefully reviewed. If the school you are interested in does not state anywhere on their website or literature that they are accredited, make certain that you ask.

Job Placement

Many culinary schools now offer some form of job placement for their students. Find out if your school offers this as well as the details on their job placement program. You ideally want a placement program that actually helps you find a job and that has good contacts in the industry.

Final Words

Culinary schools are literally popping up all over the place and chances are good that you will find a school not too far from home. But do not let distance be the determining factor in your decision. Take time and research each school you plan to attend by talking to other folks who attended that particular school or ask anyone that you may know in the restaurant industry what they think about your school. Another great place to get opinions on your school is the Internet. Search the Internet for any personal websites or blogs on culinary schools. Make sure you visit several different websites and blogs so that you get a well rounded opinion. I hope this article has helped. Best of luck in your search for the perfect school! God Bless.

With the increase in number and popularity of television programmes focusing on cooking and culinary skills a large number of people are finding the internet a key place to find tips and information on culinary art schools.

Over 53,000 people last month searched on the internet for information on ‘culinary schools’ and this data is from just one search engine. This increasing trend for people looking for culinary art schools and for careers in the culinary world is believed to be driven by the significant rise in cooking and culinary related programmes which have been aired on television especially over the last few months. This has been coupled with the new high profiles of so called ‘celebrity chefs’, further driving interest in the field.

Anne Sprigpitt owner of 1culinaryartschools.com says, ‘Over the last few months we’ve seen a significant increase in the numbers of people using our site to find more information about culinary arts schools. Much of this is down to the popularity of TV cooking programmes such as ‘Master Chef’, ‘Saturday Kitchen’ and ‘Great British Menu’, which have been screening on the BBC over recent months.’

‘The main problem many people who search for information on culinary art schools is that they are overwhelmed by the number of different options available to them. For example there are French cooking schools, Thai cooking schools, Le Cordon Bleu schools, Italian cooking schools and many more. There are so many choices they just don’t know where to start looking’

‘My advice to anyone who is looking for a career in cooking and wants to join a culinary art school is to narrow down your areas of interest, so that you identify what area of cooking you are most passionate about and go for it. The most important thing is doing what you love.’

Cooking to a very high standard is not easy and requires many hours of dedication, sweat and tears. If the increase in popularity of culinary art schools continues, we should see a new wave of ‘celebrity chefs’ coming through over the next few years as more people see it as a viable way to achieve success and fame.

The French Culinary Institute was founded in New York City in 1984 by Dorothy Cann Hamilton. It quickly became one of America’s foremost cooking schools, due to its combination of classic French techniques and American inventiveness. Today, it is recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious culinary schools due in part to the distinguished faculty at the school.

Faculty members include culinary luminaries such as master chefs Alain Sailhac, Jacques Ppin, Andr Soltner, Jacques Torres, Alice Waters, and master sommelier Andrea Robinson. They also have a series of visiting lecturers to compliment the teachings of their core faculty. The FCI provides students with rigorous, hands-on, training that allows for an easy transition into the workforce.

There are three core programs available at the FCI: The Culinary Arts Program, The Classic Pastry Arts Program, and their Art of International Bread Making Program.

The Culinary Arts Program will teach you much more than French cuisine. This program will provide you with the foundation necessary for all great cuisine. The program is broken into four levels, with each progressively more intense than the last. By the fourth level you will have direct responsibility for the menu at “L’Ecole”, a restaurant highly rated by the Zagat Survey and the Wine Spectator.

The Classic Pastry Arts Program will teach you all there is to know about making the perfect pastries. Under the stewardship of Jaques Torres, one of the youngest recipients of the prestigious “Meilleur Ouvrier de France Ptissier” Award, you will be on the road to success. The day you graduate, you will be qualified to create pastry art and designs in the finest commercial kitchens in the country.

The Art of International Bread Making Program is a 180 hour intensive immersion in all things bread making. Students will learn to bake artisan breads of France, German and Eastern European breads, and Italian breads in three two-week sessions. Graduates will receive “Le Diplome du Boulanger” upon successful completion of these courses.
