But now I am finished: today I programmed the gallery code for www.ghul.org and put the Wave Gotik Treffen 2008 review online at ghul.org. I have some plans for this website in future, but for now that's all. No more features. Now I will enjoy writing content - after my trip to the greek island crete, where I dive into the myths of minos. I am glad about this vacation. I have done too much in the last weeks and I feel exhausted.

Of course there are new plans on music now. I will step back from web-programming to music composing and some content creation when I return.

Till then, I wish you all the best.
Cy Ghul

New Cultes des Goules Logo

Thanks to Christophe Szpajdel, CULTES DES GOULES now has a new logo! Some of us left Leipzig in the early hours and tried heavily to surpress their exhaustion. This year for me everything was different, cause I stayed to watch some bands. That was bands I could have looked at at the last Wave Gotik Treffen, but didn't. Now was the time.
The BLOODSUCKING ZOMBIES FROM OUTER SPACE opened and the Werk II suddenly was full. One glance at the stage showed why: into one row all musicians of this band were positioned. Including drums, of course, cause drummer Dead "Richy" Gein is not only founder, drummer and biggest fan of the BLOODSUCKING ZOMBIES FROM OUTER SPACE but also responsible for the vocals. With scary accessoires like severed arms at his instrument or open wounds in his face he and his band gave a rocking hell to the audience. Horrorpunk at it's finest! It was fascinating to see how Dead Gein used his instrument - singing, drumming, posing. Only if you would have seen that, you can believe that this unusual line up works perfectly. Precise and grooving fills proved in any case that this guy is not overcharged. Ok, he didn't play very complex rolls from a drummers theory book, but hey, this is horror punk! Rock'n Roll guys, and this band rocked! His colleagues Rev. Bloodbath, Mr. Evilize and Dr. Schreck did the rest to make everybody clear that this band is a cool one. Even when the big drum used a lot of the space on stage, the guys had something like show. Not so much movements like you are used to get from rock band, but there was a show and that rocked. However, BLOODSUCKING ZOMBIES FROM OUTER SPACE are a very funny band and prove that good horror punk can even come from such a beautyful city like Wien. Who likes fun, horror-trash and an entertaining evening should check out this facetious zombie-guys immediatly.

THE SPOOK was a bit dissapointing to me. In the twinkling of an eye the hall was a bit more empty. The aura of the band was a bit strange. It seems to say, that this day wasn't a good day to play live. Maybe THE SPOOK doesn't want to play such early. It was contrary to what happened before. However, the outfit of the selftitled grave-rocker was vrey nice. One of these guys looked like undead elvis presley with one metre high black hair. All the musicians where very sly. Some of the songs you would have remembered, they can been heared at several samplers. They are pushing forward, and the mix is straight and good too, but they couldn't catch me. After a while I was bored. It was a strange feeling to me, cause I can't find anything which could be called bad, but they simply didn't rock to my ears. THE SPOOK was one of these bands i really wanted to see, but after expieriencing this left the hall and ate some sausages. Well, I am undead of course, but I was human before years and so I am driven by my likings. Mr. Freud knew that before years.

Nobody knows STELLAR CORPSES in germany. But in the US they are always on tour and I guess they are wellknown by everybody. This may be enough for an tour through germany thsi april. Of course they played at the Wave Gotik Treffen. STELLAR CORPSES are the long awaited new discovery of the Wave Gotik Treffen 2008. They have a contrabass, whos player looks like James Dean, a hurrican on the guitars (who seem to think that it isn't necessary to keep the guitar constantly nearer to his body than 30cm), a damn good voice and a heavy and tight drummer. The rock'n roll of that people rocks like hell. Call it Psychobilly, Horrorbilly or whatever, STELLAR CORPSES are an unbelievable cool rock band. At the moment they unfortuneatly have released only one 6 track ep. I bought that, and what you hear there, you can see on stage. They dominate the scene like no others. This band is really excellent, have a very great and imposing show and at the Wave Gotik Treffen an incredible and excellent sound. Nobody who likes this genre should miss that band.

DER FLUCH ended this evening. Another scary rock band which had a gangster outfit from the 20ies and funny songs. They call them B-Movie songs, and they are right. Lyrics are as simple and straight forward as Night of the Living dead or other movies in that genre, and you simply have to smile about it. Even when the lyrics are so funny, the musicians presented everything in a serious manner and I really think they have done a very good job. If I would play in that band, I can imagine that I laugh to death when performing this songs. It's a very special kind of humour, and I am think that more people should have it. Classic songs like "Halb Mensch Halb Tier" (translated: half human half animal) tell you something like:"I am a young werewolf, half human half animal, nobody understands it, killing is fun". This is gothic humour, really. If you don't like DER FLUCH and that sense of humour, you probably a super-gothic who NEVER laughs. It was a funny, weird and well performed set. With the less instruments it was mixed very good and cause of the lack of complexity in the songs perfectly played. Atmosphere was great, music is fine and lyrics funny - my dark heart, what else would you want? I bought the CD even if I am not a fan of... humour! ;-)

The end

It was the last tram drive this evening, and the tram was allready empty. It was great, as usual. When the more than 20.000 gothics are gone, you recognize the native psychos. "Are you thinking i am an autonomic!!!" the guy without shird cried loudly, drunken like hell, "If a woman want to fuck me, it will be different!!" he told us then. Well, sure. He doesn't care about his jeans, which didn't completly cover his ass anymore. No problem, nobody didn't care about him. Nobody really like autonomics, do we? Confused about the sudden arrival of reality I left the tram and tried to find some friends of mine, who awaited me with some dark beer people named Köstritzer. At the Wave Gotik Treffen 2008 were no looser; but some winners. The very best act was STELLAR CORPSES. They surprised me and I will follow the path of that band. LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT won the price as "Best Big Act". BLOODSUCKING ZOMBIES FROM OUTER SPACE got the price as "most strangest act ever" for the insane line up and the funny show. NEW DAYS DELAY make me proud, cause they are simply great and they live in germany. It's a bit more easy to attend concerts of NEW DAYS DELAY, so you will see me there, if they play in the south.

The Wave Gotik Treffen remains big, will be bigger and damn, even when other people think it was bullshit, for me it was great and will stay great! 2009 are only 260 days left... 359... 358...

Wave Gotik Treffen 2008 - Sunday

SONNTAG, 11.05.2008

Sunday I decided to visit again the Agra hall. Difficult sound enviroment, again, but I had expierenced some surprises here in the past. I entered while FLIEHENDE STÜRME played their last two songs. Melancholic punk. It was interesting, but well, I was to late. I was afraid that FLIEHENDE STÜRME may not go very deep with their whole set, but I cannot say that after just two songs. I will check em out next time I get the chance.

Some people were confused by the name C.D.1334. It's a long story: in fact this is CHRISTIAN DEATH, the second. After Rozz Williams left CHRISTIAN DEATH Valor, his friend, continued. He soon made Williams angry cause he reserved all rights to the name CHRISTIAN DEATH. Some fans saw Williams betrayed and refused to listen to Valor-CHRISTIAN DEATH. Long time passed and some old comrades of Rozz Williams and eremited CHRISTIAN DEATH Members founded a second CHRISTIAN DEATH band. They called it C.D.1334 cause they didn't want to confront with the rights reserved by Valor. This is the Band around Eva O.. In my opinion this is the CHRISTIAN DEATH band which is next to Rozz Williams. However, good reasons to check em out. It was scary to expierence the vibes coming from C.D.1334. It was weird. The music is full of errors, dirty and creepy. Altough this is a fact, it was perfect. If you are directly in front of Eva O., you just can ask: who old is this girl?? And after that: maybe she is dead? Songs were perfect but presented in a way, some of these music-must-be-presented-error-free-musicians must have had a heart attack when they were listening. There was a deep emotional binding between the audience and the band. I can't tell you more, and there are no reasons to do. Why? You may know the songs, everybody knows. And the power these band has to dominate the audience cannot be telled. It must be expierenced. The announcment told us that these may be one of the last gigs C.D.1334 perform. Eva O. wrote at their website taht this project is some kind of an farewell for Rozz. If that was a funeral gig, than this was the most perfect funeral gig Rozz could have. I believe that you can appreciate this concert only if you grew up with CHRISTIAN DEATH, or got deep into it later. This concert wasn't only the funeral for that C.D.1334 project, it was also a death-watch for Rozz Williams. Damn cool that I could see this.

A totally different world entered stage when SAMSAS TRAUM was beginning. The drummers back was inured not long ago, but you wouldn't think it if you didn't knew. SAMSAS TRAUM was good for a surprise. Extremly compressed guitar sounds made a very fat and thick sound. This made the SAMSAS TRAUM concert to a plain Heavy-Metal-Concert. When Alexander cried "Let you hair flow" he supported my impression. Flying hair - headbaning - that wasn't what I expected. Even songs like "Stromausfall im Herzspital" which wasn't metal-related in any ways sounded like a heavy-metal song. That all wasn't bad but it was surprising. Bad was that the mixers compressed not only the guitars but the whole stereo sum (guessing!!). This leaded us to the fact, that the higher frequences - like synthesizers - were cut off. You could hear lots of guitars, a very dry drum with nailhead kick and the powerful voice of vocalist Alexander. Perfect for metal. But did these guys really wanted to have a heavy metal show at the Wave Gotik Treffen? It has been gone better slowly to the end of the set. However, most fans could have their fun I guess. Hope the band had their fun too.

Compression went loose and LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT climbed the stage. This is a band which means very much to me. They had the usual performance and a videoshow, which was very impressing and emotional. I liked it. Impressing songs have been played very perfect. A dreamy set with imposing effect. Altough Sean didn't hit all tunes correctly, this wasn't bad. In fact i felt this helped this scary atomsphere more than it was bad. This band is one of the best acts I know, even when they haven't too much releases. The mix was very dynamic and would brougth all audiophiles tears into their eyes: this was quite an oldschool mix! One had the feeling that this band doesn't need help from the mixing engineer. Nobody could have destroyed these songs. For me, one of the highlights of 2008 Wave Gotik Treffen. Even a few hours later I could hear the wonderful harmonies LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT created. I knew I wasn't the only one, it was clear when I saw into the faces of the people around me.

Wave Gotik Treffen 2008 - Saturday

"The people who live in the east, especially Leizip, are other beeing than we are", my father told me when I was young. I have been in Leipzig for many times now. From time to time my fathers heritage come true. This year was one that years. I am talking of my dinner which I should take before all the concerts started. There are many names in germany for "grilled chicken". I don't bore you to death, especially if you don't speak german, but the name you have to use in Leipzig is "Broiler", and tell you what, this is strange, even for a german native speaker. However, Leipzig natives seem to have some kind of ritual before eating that chicken. They punt around and and use their arms as wings, making strange noises. It seems they honour the chicken before they eat it. However, we germans love the leipziger natives for doing this dance. If you want to check that out, go to the Pfeffinger Str., directly on the way from the city to the agra and get to the next chicken grill station you can get. If you are a lucky one, you'll see that scary ritual.

Well, this time i visited the Werk II again. I didn't know where to go, but some friends recommended me to visit CAUDA PAVONIS, when I am hungry for some Batcave. I am. Always. I love the hair of these batcave guys, i love that scary music and hey, I didn't know that band. So nothing to loose, I went straight to Werk II - CAUDA PAVONIS.

CAUDA PAVONIS started and immediatly you knew that these band is long in business. They know what they are doing. Everybody has incredible fun on stage, an vocalist Su tells storys and jokes like doing that every evening. That was necessary, cause this band had technical problems starting from the beginning. I think they lost 3 or 4 minutes of play time, which is really bad at a festival. Just the last two bands can have some extra time. But there was Su, and she managed that problems at a professional level. She talked, had fun, and suddenly everything was ready again. She declared the first song for ended and the next song started. You had the feeling that the musicians live for their music, but the presentation was a bit strange. One could have thought that these band should have a bit more rehearsals. But i was quite sure that the problems here weren't the rehearsals. I am the opinion that the monitors at the stage didn't do a good job. I guess that cause the PA speakers had problems too and you could hear some very evil noises and scratches at the left middle box of the high tuners. This was horrible! From that point of time I knew that the band may have problems to hear themself on stage. Well, that speaker problem normally occurs when the stereo output is oversteered or the box is simply damaged. The following bands didn't have that problem and I guessed that this box was oversteered. I was near to the mixer when I recognized this. I would have had panic, but this guy was as cool as ice. He didn't do anything. Was this sabotage? I don't know. There were quite relaxed parts in the set, everybody must have heared that. Well. Back to the review. I liked everything these band has done. The songs are great and tight and groovy. They had a fine show and after the gig I went to buy the CD "WARS AND MASQUERADES" which I like very much by now. Hopefully they return with less technical problems! Check them out!

The follow up, NEW DAYS DELAY, always remind me to Nina Hagen, Nena and a strange kind of punk. Insa Knapp was the vocalist of this band and could have be the proud winner of the title "Very new Wave of funky and fucking cool modern oldschool Punkmusic". She has a talent that you love her when you see here. She is very charismatic and dominated the scene. Sometimes you had the feeling that she was overwhelmed by the lots of people, giving her glory. Sometimes you felt she was shy and small child was looking out of her eyes. However, she is both - shy and overwhelmed, just nice. She always did small jokes when she announced the next song. These jokes were very good if you know what band NEW DAYS DELAY is and if you know that latest CD. NEW DAYS DELAY always have a good portion of irony and humour. If you have seen that band for the first time, you may have been confused about that :-) However, you could hear classics like STEREOKATASTROPHE and VERMUTLICH HYSTERISCH and other. These songs rocked me down to hell, great stuff. I was near to dance (the last band which made me dance was IMPALED NAZARENE). All songs were played tight and precise. There were no errors, no mistakes. However, what Chuck Norris calls the 100%-roundhouse-Kick wasn't here. That felt strange to me, this band is a live band a play very often. They have 10 years of history and are pros in my eyes. However, no problem. I had my fun and many others had too. You should really put your eye on them. If you get a chance to see them with a smaller audience, take it. They may be very cool then!

Next band was GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG. I remembered the concert at the Wave gotik treffen in 2006. Same stage, same time. Same music. The live performance has increased. But after a while, maybe the half of the set I was bored again. It was strange. A good band, a good show, much darkness and fog, but.... hm some kind of boring. It remembered me strongly to CLAN OF XYMOX, sorry, can't help. They have synths and guitars, well good, but at least I couldn't stand it: all songs have the same frequences. For the listener every song seems similar to the other. No surprises. No one of that songs did go very deep. One beauty element is just to less for forty minutes of live music. No excitement was there, and the speed of the song isn't something I call "wooohooo". They are all good musicians tough, and I would like to have them at the music university, studying music theory. Maybe Mozart helps:"the hardest in music is the speed".

What a difference the past show was to the "progressive batcave" guys from TRAGIC BLACK. Imagine the following: announcement, band enters stage, audience wents cracy and band is rocking like hell. TRAGIC BLACK mix up that modern synthesizer sound with totally oldschool music. Scary. Their clothes have that mixture too: like this a punk must look nowadays. They combine worlds, and that is good. The songs go very deep and have lots of layers. People seem to love the contrast to the past synthetic band and wake up again. MAD HATTER is one of these songs you can call a hit and hits you like a boot in your face. Great stuff, really. Most of you are not interested in the following, but I have to tell you: this band act professional, can't tell. They are posing into the camera for the photographers to get perfect photos. If you buy a CD, you get patches and stickers for free. However, I feel this is not the end of TRAGIC BLACKs musical carreer. They just have started and it seems they want the world domination... ok, let's give it to them!

The evening wasn't over. I relaxed with some bottles of wine and then i went to the Kohlrabizirkus and watched TIAMAT. Kohlrabizirkus - this is the most difficult location for the mixing engineers at the Wave Gotik Treffen. If you hit the snare drum, it's sound returns after 700ms from the ceiling. Dubious fun. Well, the Wave Gotik Treffen has learned and seem to know now about the problems of this hall. This evening you could listen to the work of very lucky or very good mixining egineers (or both). I guess they just were very good. They just gave enough pressure to the sound and so they could push the returning noise back to the ceiling. You had a very good sound then when you standed in the middle of the hall. At the edges this didn't work, but hey, who wanted to see TIAMAT from an edge? Well then - TIAMAT had a very good mix, and I am glad to say that this wasn't all which were good. TIAMAT is a band with lots of history. They started with the name TREBLINKA, performing heavy black metal. Then they switched their name to TIAMAT, and with time music become more dreamy. CLOUDS for example, is a heavy piece with lots of dreamy stuff. Great CD tough. You can listen to some gothic influences there. Then came that dubious wave of gothic metal. Some love it. Some just ignore that word - gothic metal. At this point of time they released WILDHONEY, the best album they every wrote. The went famous with this CD. The follow-up releases couldn't bring them that fame again. The second song this evening was from that WILDHONEY album - all the audience was singing HOOOONEYMOOOOOOON!! This song got everybody at his balls and they dominated the scene. TIAMAT are full-time pros and you really hear that. They don't move very much at the stage but they control their fans. Just a few can do this. All songs were played tight and very precise. Wonderful. I can't tell you why TIAMAT suddenly brought up a very old and very heavy song with double-bass attacks and high speed riffing. For me the atmosphere was shattered a bit. I expected some songs of CLOUDS maybe. But that one surprised me. I am not sure, but maybe it was from SUMERIAN CRY? Sounded like Black Metal. Follow up was a very lightweighted classic guitar song. I was glad that I heared that WILDHONEY song before, so I wasn't too much dissapointed. I was confused. I sat on the fence about that gig. Good like hell or dissapointing? I can't tell. I left the hall later. I guess they had to much various genres in their set. As I arrived home, drinking some wine again, I suddenly knew that I have missed one tour in my life: it was the WILDHONEY tour.

Wave Gotik Treffen 2008 - Friday

Introduction

It was the Wave Gotik Treffen with the badest weather in it’s history: 30 dregrees transformed welldone make up into water, patchoullie aroma into sweat smellings and latex corsets into mobile saunas. The other people (the native) could only laugh about these dark guys; they wore shorts and t-shirts while we attracted perfectly, dressed in black. However – that’s what I call fetish! May they laugh, they’ll never understand! (Sometimes I think I won’t never understand too – however). I was curious about the fact that the girls at the Wave Gotik Treffen weren’t suffering a circulatory collapse one by one. Well, the male gothics had there fun tough – who doesn’t like to look onto that sweating, latex-dressed girls, always with an erotic red shimmer at the cheeks, short of breath?

Like every year there was a big traffic jam at the roads to Leipzig. I started about three hours earlier than I did last year, but still arrived at the same time. Unbelievable! Time seems to be unimportant, when one decides to to join that gloomy dream which people call Wave Gotik Treffen. In fact, it’s a dream: four days vacation of your job, of your life, of your sorrows. Four days without the rules of reality.

As usual there were billion of people before the sale of tickets. It was a long and slowly moving snake made out of gothics, horror rockers and dark punks. Lucky as I was, I got my ticket very quickly at the press counter. Under the glances of thousands I crept quickly into Agra, hopefully to get my photo pass without problems.

FRIDAY, 09.05.2008

After a while I entered the concert hall at the Agra, where the first band I wanted to watch allready has played: DAS ICH. Rumours said they were a very genius Live band. This evening they rocked too and I really was disappointed that I missed them. No problem, I thought and watched the last songs of SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK.

That band was big in the 80thies. Some evil tongues are telling that they did care more about there makeup than about their music. Tons of hair styled like a tower reaching into the sky, piercings, tattoos and futuristic sounds were new to the days now gone. Well, this evening I didn’t see the glammer they had before ages – they were mixed badly and played without pressure. After their latest album they should have splitted up, so I cannot say who of the originals played there. It’s a fact that the vocalist didn’t hit the right tunes. Bruce Dickinson doesn’t do so, but that guy had an incredible show where he runs hundreds of metres, while the vocalist of SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK just sang very badly. There was no live show and was getting bored. The bad mix crowned that performance. No compression, no equalizing, nothing what could helped that very problematic sound at the Agra hall. Instead of that, the mixer tried to help the vocalist and put tons of reverbs at the vocals. Scary. This effect returned after 300ms from the Agras ceiling and fucked my ears up. No Sirs, nothing for me. Meanwhile I have the opinion that no 80thies band should play at this hall. The music is not composed for that hall, that’s all. Synths are sounding thin, which is a problem with the high ceiling and the echo: you hear everything. A guitar driven band should not have these problems. OK, not photos, I was too late, but I saw another cult band.

UNHEILIG was the next band. The sound has been improved LOTS. Slightly compression on the guitars made everything as tight as hell (like a smoothy, eh?). Der Graf, vocalist of UNHEILIG is an extremely charismatic person and a very good vocalist. I was not curious about the thousands of girls in the first rows. A perfectly live show did the rest. Most people I saw were really glad with that performance and UNHEILIG has won their game. I am not a huge fan of this kind of music, but I have to admit that these musicians are highly professional. All songs are well composed and use excitement and speed at best places. Some songs have parts at which people can sing along, that’s perfect for many. Check that band out, if like that music. If you don’t like but have nothing else to do you should check UNHEILIG out too.

The DRAGONS sound like JOY DIVISION, someone said. That was reason enough to move Dragonson to the Werk II, my favourite location in Leipzig. I had to check out this statement. Cause the name is widely used, here is the direct link to that band: http://www.dragons.cc/ .

As the band started, I thought the gates of heaven have opened. Crystalclear sound, cool and rocking songs with quite a simple structure (this is good, guys!), melancholy and very, very good vocalist who threw lots of roses into the audience. The current CD is “HERE ARE THE ROSES”, and I guess that is why. All females were glad, and the feminine males were too. JOY DIVISION isn’t too far, but I listened to the CD later and DRAGONS have their own style. It would be unfair to compare them with the DIVISION. DRAGONS are well-done alternative rock. I am glad they have their own identity. Who needs something else? The show was one of a rock band. Anthony Tombling (great name, by the way) sang with impressing gestures, full of emotions. He dramatized his songs, threw himself at the bottom in extacy and yeah, this man had his fun. I bought instantly the CD, my first at this festival. As mentioned, the mix was perfectly and all the synths were integrated very well. One of the best mixes this weekend tough. I had the feeling that DRAGONS had their own mixing engineer, so perfectly was everything. Guitars were very brilliant and the drums came with high pressure and crispy (good god, do native speaker say that like this??). If the DRAGONS from the UK return to germany, I will be there, and it is highly recommended that you visit them too, if they are near you. Buy the CD and learn to sing all the songs, that’s what I did ;-)

New Ghul Website

Dear Friends, living or dead,

in the past two years i figured out again, how important music is for me. These days I have spoken to so much people. After a while, CULTES DES GOULES has been not only the side project of an broken musician. No, with the help of many people that band has recorded a CD and got more and more listeners and supporters.

However, the story didn't end here. I have many interesting offers for the future. I take them so serious, that i decided to put another website online.

About CULTES DES GOULES: http://www.cultesdesgoules.org
About Cy Ghul, Scene, Side Projects: http://www.ghul.org

I don't want to mix CULTES DES GOULES with that new website content. In fact, at the new website you can read everything about my past musicial pathes, my opinion on the scene (ok, that part needs to build up :-)) and of course about side projects I currently run.
These sideprojects include non-metal music and therefor I decided to activate a new mailinglist for that stuff:

http://groups.google.com/group/cy-ghul
You can subscribe to the list at: http://www.ghul.org/newsletter.html

If you subscribe you'll read about updates to this website and about all activities, while subscribing to the CULTES DES GOULES means, that you only recieve METAL and CULTES DES GOULES related stuff.

However, as a bonus and a little birthday present to www.ghul.org, i have put two new songs online - but be warned, it's NO METAL! Just check out my download page and get your copy of:

MONOLEBEN - a song inspired by the german author Boris Koch. The lyrics are taken mostly direct from this short story. If you feel you are monotized - this song is for you!

FEENTOD - Did you ever wonder where gandalf went after the ring wars ended? Here is the answer!

However - as mentioned you will not recieve any news on that electro/whatever stuff here - so please subscribe to the ghul-mailinglist too!

With best regards,
Cy Ghul
http://www.cultesdesgoules.org
http://www.ghul.org
Label: http://www.barbarianwrath.org

Back and busy

Dear all,

of course I have not died at the Wave Gotik Treffen 2008, but after returning, tons of work have tried to kill me :-). I updated MORTIIS website and helped to build the new MORTIIS streetteam software, which is now used by MAMA TRASH Promotion.
After that I had some smaller fixes to do for the MEDUSENBLUT website. As some of you know, the author behind Medusenblut, BORIS KOCH, recently has won the Martins Award for the best crimanl novel 2008. Congratulations from my side - to honour this I wrote a song for my old friend, which I will announce next days. You can download the song at my brandnew personal website which will also announced here.

My search for other musicians for CULTES DES GOULES wasn't successfull, unfortunatly. I talked to several people and bands, but nobody I met could exist in that band. It's not that the music is too complicated; it's just very special music. However, we'll see if and when CULTES DES GOULES will play live.

I also remastered the album THE HOUSE AT THE WATER and I think I am very happy with the result now. I did some errors on the old master which are now fixed. Thanks to the guy behind of BARBARIAN WRATH, who always told me to take all time I need, I took the time. Now the CD is perfect, in my ears.

Well, and last but not least I wrote the article for the WAVE GOTIK TREFFEN 2008 and hell, i have don about 5000 photos! I am sorting everything out and will include that gallerys on my new website mentioned above. I guess at the end there are only 150 photos left, but hej, I am musician, not a professional photograph :-)
For the festival, i can say it was great. I will translate the article and post it here too.

Have a nice sunday

Off to the Wave Gotik Treffen

As every year I am heading east for Leipzig and the Wave Gotik Treffen 2008. As every year I will write a huge review of the festival, and the first time I will post it here and at http://www.possessed.de.
This year are many cool bands - the sun will shine bright and temperature is about 21 celsius. Some bands like TIAMAT are on top at my list and I am really hot to see those heros. See ya in Leipzig!

Paul White - Basic MIDI

Recently I read a lot of books about mixing/mastering etc.. I started this with reading one book of the wellknown series of Paul White - Basic MIDI. This book is well-written and has a logical structure. It's meant for beginners in MIDI and I guess, this is true. Basic MIDI was not in-depth enough for me, as I have played with several Audio Sequencers the last 2 years. Sometimes it gave me a good overview about stuff I allready knew which actually helped me lots to categorize several components. The book is quite old, but you can read it even when you are not a keyboarder but an synth.musician who is working with f. e. Logic. If you are an GarageBand User you may get an overview too, but lots of the concepts and ideas introduced in this book cannot be done with GarageBand - I switched to Logic Express a while after reading.

Paul White starts with "What is MIDI", explains a MIDI Sequencer (which is in fact an old Logic Version :-)), gives an overview about MIDI synchronization and then about synthesis. However the chapter about "practical MIDI editing" is not very useful anymore. Things haven't changed in the MIDI world, but the tools you work with have. Some stuff is much easier now.

However, this book is recommend for all who need an overview about what is a Sequencer, MIDI, Synthesizer, how to synchronize or connect MIDI devices etc. pp. For beginner this is quite simple, but I recommend to you to play with an tool like GarageBand for a while before reading this introduction. Some terms are much easier to recon if you have done so.
If you have played for 2 years or above, this book will give you nothing new which is no surprise, when reading the books title "Basic Midi". For at the moment 7 euro it's a nice to have book. 3 of 5 stars for me ;-)

Logic, Instruments and a new midi device

Before a few days i tried to install my Roland TD-20 Drum module at my mac. The TD-20 should take MIDI data, play, and the mac should recieve 8 tracks of wonderful audio files. This way I have everything seperated for a mix.
When I tried that, i figured out the very first time when GarageBand is not enough. GarageBand cannot use the MIDI out slot of anything - it's simply not possible. After a while I realized that I have other problems with that sequencer, like: export MIDI from GarageBand.
Altough I like the GUI of GarageBand more, I had to switch again to Logic 7, which I bought before long time (and for expensive money, altough it was used!). It didn't want that software cause it was ugly, complicated and well, oversized for my needs. It seems that I am now an adult haha.
However, connecting the TD-20 to my Phonic Firewire card was quite easy.
I started the Logic Setup Assistant. Here i could tell Logic where my MIDI Device is connected. Nearly all enviroment work will be done by Logic no. As soon as I understood the I have to connect an Instrument port to the little "Drums mapped" icon at the enviroments window (APPLE-8), I just had to make sure that the track, which uses that instrument has chosen the correct MIDI-channel. In my case, the TD-20 uses channel 10.
I am now more into MIDI than i was before weeks, and everything was going well for me now. I got some other surprises by Logic now and altough it's ugly, I think I'll stay with it for a while. I mean, why should I not use my hardware modules? I understand more and more now, and meanwhile it's something like.... hu... love?

When switching back to Logic, i didn't find my GarageBand Instruments anywhere. I get ravenous, i had installed them on my external drive. However, i found it as Instrument / Insert / Channel Strip - no worries here. My article about "moving the garageband instruments" still work for logic :-)

New CULTES DES GOULES MP3s available

Dear Friends, living or dead,

the label BARBARIAN WRATH has announced that
THE HOUSE AT THE WATER will be available in July 2008 YABB.
You can prepare yourself for the debut with listening to the brandnew
MP3 samples which has been uploaded to MySpace (bader quality)
or to my website (better quality).

MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/goules
Web: http://www.cultesdesgoules.org/downloads.html

If you want to express your feelings about these songs, check out our forum:
http://www.thebasar.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=36

Please spread the word!

Yours sincerly,
Cy Ghul

Web: http://www.cultesdesgoules.org/downloads.html
Forum: http://www.thebasar.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=36
MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/goules
Label: http://www.barbarianwrath.org

Native Instruments Kore Player

Before a while i installed the Native Instrument "Kore Player" App at my Mac. It was pain, cause everything started up, i choose my Firefly-Interface and heard - nothing. I asked at the message boards but nobody could help me. I tweaked everything around and around. I also installed my Cubase LE Version which came with my Firefly and then suddenly my Mac was slower and slower, with the result that my Songs couldn't be played well at GarageBand.
Last weekend I reinstalled OSX and my songs played well, but still Kore Player refused to give a sign. It was frustrating and then there was enlightment: I was used just to choose my sound and everything works, but Kore Player needs to DOUBLECLICK! I did so and hej, the player played.

Kore Player is quite nice and integrates well as a "Generator" into GarageBand, but the standard installation just gives you 100 MB of sound. This is ok for testing purposes and for use sometimes, but I am not excited. The sounds are fine, mostly for electronic music, but didn't leave me stunning. I will now try out any longer and leave it installed, but I am not sure if I should buy these Kore Packs, with which you can extend your sounds.

However it's a nice idea for all those of us, who have not 999$ to buy the NI Komplete package ;-)

GarageBand Instruments and Loops on external Harddisk

I just have 80 Gig on my harddrive and this is quite less when doing development work at daytime and music in nighttime - in fact, it's not possible to have more bigger music project at the same time with this space. The loops (i don't use them, but installed them to see what's behind that stuff) take more gigs than i can efford, same goes for the garageband instruments.

This morning i had a reinstall and decided to put all that space consuming stuff on my external harddisk. If you want to do like i did, i recommend you about 300 Gig space on a Mac OSX journaled filesystem. I had a FAT32 on my mac to get on it via Windows too, but this harddisk is not always activated when i need it. I have to make a harddisk check to activate it, which is quite uncomfortable. I guess you don't want to have that problems with your instruments.

However, having your instruments on an external disk is straightforward. Please note, my volumes name is FELIX, replace that name with whatever you call your harddrives.

LOOPS
I created the folder:
/Volumes/FELIX/audiolib/loops/Apple Loops/Apple

With my Finder I clicked at "Macintosh HD", where my loops are currently installed. Switch further to
/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple
and copy all that folder in there to your new Loops-Folder (and delete the old content). You can do the same with "iLife Sound Effects" if you want. Cause you instrument installer indexed all that loops, you have to go to:
/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/
and delete all txt files in there (maybe three or four or simliar- depends on how much Jam Packs you installed, i guess). Start up GarageBand and open you Loop-Browser. It will tell you that you don't have any Loops installed. Open your finder with your new loops-place, drag the folder where all subfolders with instruments are and drop the into your loop-browser. GarageBand does the rest for you.

INSTRUMENTS
It's a similar process for your instruments. I created:
/Volumes/FELIX/audiolib/instruments
Then i copied everything from /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library to this folder. I emptied the Instrument Library Folder. Please note: if you have some stuff allready installed in you new folder (FELIX in my enviroment) pleas copy carefully. OSX will delete old stuff when you just copy folders, and this is not what we want. In this case you have to copy manually file for file. And: you'll need your superuser password for this action. If you don't have any yet, open a terminal:

> sudo su

This will ask you for a password. By default you have none. Press enter. If you are in without error message, do this command:

> passwd

and get a new password. By the way, you should do this ALWAYS, it's a bad idea not to set a superuser password - everybody can login and manipulate your computer this way.

Before you do that, of course i cannot give any guarantees. And please note, i have some kind of bug with my method, if you know how to fix that, let me know. All my instruments are now in the same JamPack, which may be a result of my heavy metal copy actions ;-)

When you next start up GarageBand i tells you that it has no Instruments installed. There is "Choose" Button where you can point to your new Instruments folder.

GarageBand Tweaks

Today i was suffering cause my GarageBand song hang up several times and made it impossible for me to compose. I turned on my bought Logic copy to do the song with that software. It was better, but i still felt so uncomfortable, i tried to tweak GarageBand a bit more. However, i now know why my song lagged. It was my effect on my drums: i am used to deep drums with lots of bass and modified the "Apple Rock Kit" which had a horrible impact.
The other teaks like freezing tracks didn't work for me. Well at least the tip with the colors where useful: when GarageBand is in need of too much processor time, the song pointer switches to red color. This way i found out that not my echos, but my equalizers are my problem.
This is not the first time i figured out that equalizers use a lot of processor time. Well, i will not buy a more expensive apple. I will just turn the equalizers on when mixing.

Music in theory

Dear Friends,
when finishing with Thargos, i realized that my only chance to continue my musical work is to learn everything i can get about music theory, means, harmony. I bought several books and wow, there are a lot of quality differences. Some authors think the reader is a stupid idiot, just buying that book for impress (or depress?) his friends. Well, the german book "Harmonielehre und Songwriting" from the authors Fritsch, Kellert and Lonardoni is not like those books. It's a great and very, very compact reading. On a half page they might explain what the circle of fifths (Quintenzirkel) means. Well, in fact you don't need any more explaination. What these guys write is straight forward and easy to understand. Just at a few pages there are a lack of words. This is for example when they explain the bass clef; it's a bit to compact and you have to read carefully to understand that you can combine violine clef and bass clef. A beginner will get out very much out of this book by reading just the first 100 pages and understand, what f. e. a perfect cadence is. I recommend this book to every german speaking musician who wants to learn about harmonies and how you build them up. My only problem is, who should sing that melodies??

CULTES DES GOULES signed to BARBARIAN WRATH

Dear Friends, living or dead,

now it's official: CULTES DES GOULES signed to the wellknown label BARBARIAN WRATH. The sound is incredible and I am very proud of it. However, my labels boss told me that some tracks may need a bit of rework at vocals level. This is no problem anymore, I will do that. It's now time for me to take a resume. The past 1,30 years was full of learning and this CD exhausted me. I improved my bass-guitar playing, my design skills for the web, learned how to record, learned about necessary equipment, about synthesizers, improved my harmonic and melodie skills, mixed, learned what filters, eq and compressors really are and finally started with the great area of mastering. I survived, i succeded. I have only less power left, I need to rest before I step onwards to a new album. But all that stuff was exciting; my horizon is open by now.

COMPOSING
When I started with CULTES DES GOULES, I didn't know anything about creating music alone. In fact, i was alone, and nobody of my former friends could tell me how to start. In 2006 I bought Magix Music Maker; this was a frustrating piece of software. Once I had something, one could name a "song", I couldn't develope it the way i want. You are built in a golden cage; everything simple and well designed, but you have not the chance to do something which the developers have thought of. Well, only good thing was that I felt that i -could- do it: I could compose songs.
In 2007 i bought my Mac Mini; a new life started, everything is simple, well designed and ready to use. I will not leave my Mac again, I love it. Included was a programm called GarageBand 1. I started it and recognized quickly that this easy-to-use programm could help me with making music. GarageBand 1 didn't have any support for a "virtuall keyboard", so i bought a keyboard from M-Audio. It's connected via USB, quite simple, ugly, without dynamics keys, but usefull and cheap when you just work with midi files. With that equipment I composed my first songs. However, i quickly switched to GarageBand 3, cause this is so much more comfortable. I bought some Jam-Packs and then I had everything I wanted. BTW, if you are thinking you set up your Mac Mini and off you go- wrong. The Mac Mini has NO cable slot for microphone in. You need to get a soundcard for that. I bought a simple Hercules USB-Soundcard for 30 euro. That was enough for my tests.
Later I bought Logic Express, but it was fucking hard. I learned how to use it, but the MIDI editing stuff is uncomfortable. I used it a while for mixing, but had to learn that my money was wasted. I was happy that I didn't bought Logic Pro which is much more expensive.

RECORDING
After the MIDI editing, I figured out that my sounds are OK, but I need real, analogue instruments to make my music work. I put in my bassguitar into the Hercules card. It was OK for a try-out but I recognized that this isn't enough for a professional CD. Later i bought a Phonic Firefly 808 and hell what, this hardware is so fukking great- smooth integration into my mac, works perfectly with Core Audio on Mac OSX 10.4.x. Very fine- I started to record.
This was easier with Logic Express; you can record tasks here, one loop over and over again, and at the end you choose the very best and off you go. With GarageBand you have to click "start" for every loop. Well, in the latest GarageBand version this feature is integrated, but I didn't want to buy it. Maybe the next version; this one has to less features which are of interested of me (who to hell wants a virtual band??).
However, cause Logic Express is so ugly and hard to handle, I used GarageBand again to record.

MIXING
For mixing, GarageBand is very very hard to use. You simply cannot have exact positions, cause everything is to small. Logic Express is perfect for mixing. It also offers the possibility with lots of VST-Plugins, which are usefull this task. I used Logic Express, opened my GarageBand songs and everything worked out well. I made some of the standard-errors a beginner makes, but cleaned that out half a year later.

MASTERING
Mastering- a new field for me. I learned that WaveLab is one of the best pieces of software, but I didn't want to buy that for a important but short task. GarageBand has some features in this direction, but it looks very gory and low level- I really don't understand what they want us to use here. However, Logic Express is of course possible. You have to construct your enviroment, and all that just for improving your song. Next problem: you cannot have multiple songs open, which is great for a beginner. However, I remembered Audacity, and thats it! Easy to use it was, and it could integrate all my Logic Express Compressors, Eqs etc. pp. At the end I mastered everything with this great and free Open Source tool.

FAZIT
At the end is clear, a combination of all that tools is the very best for me. My CD sounds great- ok, professional people may have there problems, but the rest will enjoy it like I do. I read very often about "use that, that is cool" and figured out, that this idealism is not worth to speak of. All products have there pros and contras. For a small production, this all is perfect. You don't need expensive stuff. Just ignore all the "pros" out there or the "semi-pros" who try to tell you that you ONLY can have fun with the most expensive product. They are lying- it's possible to have professional products without stealing software. I guess, it all depends on your quality and your ears.

Hell has been recorded

Yes, it's true- this night i have recorded all remaining tracks from the new and first CULTES DES GOULES album. It was hard work till now, with lots of up and downs. I hope the last miles will be a bit less exciting- my old, dead heart isn't made for such kind ofhectic.
Well now everything is in the box. I am starting with the process of mixing and arranging the last synth. stuff this week. Somewhere in the middle of this an interested underground label gets a raw mix- and this will decide if Hell becomes a full-flavoured CD.
Carpe Noctem!

10 rules to be a happy musician

I wrote an article last year about "the pain of beeing professional". I got much positive feedback for that. However, i recently found a very interesting similar post about that at a wellknown open source guys blog. He wrote about Radiohead: they gave their download away for free, asking people for donating money for the download. People paid. Radiohead got lots of promotion and got a bigger label than. Seems that everybody has won, except the music industry, which lost a chance of making some money.

Recently i talked to Heim from Human Bloodfeast and he told me that they invested so much money and didn't anything back except for a bit of glory and some reviews. Well, i really think that we (= the underground) should STOP RIGHT NOW to invest money in music; investing money destroys the fun of playing. It's getting us under pressure. It's destroying our art.

My decision: fun, creativity and art can only exist when i am free. I am only free when i don't have to care about "professionality". I am underground- and here are my rules for saving the underground scene and beeing underground yourself:

1) Nearly everybody of us has the possibility to make some home recording. Use it! To be honestly, don't pay 1500 for a studio when you can get a own little studio for that money (PC, Monitor, Phonic Firefly and some micros). I don't think a studio for 1500 eur is better than what you can do yourself. Don't pay money for a studio! The Label does that, nobody else! If the Label doesn't do that, offer home-recording to the label. Record within your possibilitys!

2) Nobody must pay 20.000 Euro for a perfect studio. If you are an underground band, you will never (in most cases) sell so much CD's to get your money back. If you record in a studio, don't pay yourself for your recordings!

3) Don't print CD's. Printing CD's is the domain of the labels. They do it. They pay for that. They get the money back. They have community.

4) Don't pay money to your label. They print it- they get the money- they pay for it. If they don't pay for the manufactoring, they don't believe in you.

5) Don't found your own label. That's not your domain. Do you really want to care about sellings? Do you want to buy services for other bands than yours? Is your community so big that you get the money of all your releases back? Do you have the time- remember, you should practice instead of fill excel sheets!

6) If you have no label, create CD-Rom's and offer free downloads. This is your chance to get a community and supporters. Use Creative Commons for saving your rights! You will not get much money if cooperating with a label- so you will not loose money if giving away your music for free.

7) Support other musicians and work with people who support licenses like Creative Commons! They are like you! Help building up a music community- this doesn't cost anything, makes fun and gives you space to develope own ideas

8) Support Jamendo. Do this and upload your music to free music communitys. Why not? Less people PAY for your music. But much more people would listen to it, when it's free- and maybe the buy your merchandise or donate some money.

9) Create merchandise products when you feel your community is strong enough. Merchandise is lesser expensive, but you can get all the money of it. If you haven't a community, choose Spreadshirt as manufacturer.

10) Spread the word of freedom. Musicscene is changing. Nobody has the money to buy all interesting releases. Most people will buy their big favourites, like Maiden, maybe. There is no money for underground bands anymore. Make your music free and be part of the scene. Or sell 100 pieces of your latest CD and stay unknown. In a free music scene lots of musicians have space.

Your comments, as usual, are appreciated; answer here, in the forums or via e-mail.

All Axes recorded - Pt II

Dear Friends,
now all axes for the upcoming album with working title "HELL" are recorded- means, i have a longplayer with all the music stuff on my harddisc. I am starting with the voices now, and i am doing some synthesizer stuff. After that, everything will be mixed down and thats it. For me this is a great moment- it's my first CD i recorded and composed everything at my own.

The new recordings cannot be compared with that files which appeared on myspace. The sound is more raw and not so steril, which gives everything a very creepy touch. I just used Basses, no guitares, so everything is at low frequencies. I think, you'll like it- most people would have expected this when they knew that the old stuff is demo material only just recorded with synths.

I am looking forward to give you new sound samples very soon!

Hell Tracklist is final

Dear Friends, Dead or Alive,

after the first recording sessions with my new equipment everything is well. I have recorded 7 songs by now (means: basses, clean and distorted) and only vocals, synths are left before i head for the sound stuff. However, i have chosen the songs which will appear on the album with the working name HELL:

01) Introitus
02) The Outsider
03) Blood
04) Hell
05) The Lake
06) Mondscheinsonate
07) Ritual
08) Of a king long dead
09) Brown Jenkin
10) The Messenger
11) The House at the water
12) Alice (Sisters of Mercy)

This release will have a total running time of roundabout 45 minutes. Stay tuned for further infos!

All the best and a happy new year!
Cy Ghul & Cultes des Goules

Catacombs Studio is complete now

Before a few days my PHONIC Firefly 808 has arrived- however this great fukking piece integrate suprisingly well into my mac enviroment. It's a bit bigger than the Terratec desaster, but.. it works! I am now trying to record the first tunes with it. I think in a few days i will announce the name of all the songs which will appear at the new album. Till then.... have a nice hallows eve.

Taster for Hell

Bored from the delivery issues, I asked a friend what to do next. I thought about some website stuff, composing new stuff etc. but always had the feeling that the more important work is still undone. However, he recommended to install my old equipment again and record some demos with a sound i would like to have. Well, i have done this now this morning and recorded a taster for THE MESSENGER. Please download that song and tell me what you think about- either via mail, via the messageboards i linked on the right sound or here, as a comment. I will record a second taster maybe this weekend or next week, to keep the ball running and to develope my ideas.

THE MESSENGER Taster:
http://cultesdesgoules.org/downloads/taster/TheMessenger.mp3
