During the current week, the rupee has shown an appreciation of 0.58 percent against the greenback. This is a recovery of Rs. 10.27/USD from its 52 weeks low of 168.4353/USD, which was seen on August 26.

The interbank market saw the rupee climb to 158.16 versus the greenback today. It gained 17 paisas during the session, whereas it had closed at 158.33 on Thursday.

A.A.H Soomro, Managing Director at Khadim Ali Shah Bukhari Securities, while commenting on the PKR said,

The currency keeps strengthening due to strong Foreign Exchange inflows and lower outflows. Lesser international travel is forcing people to use banking channels. No outward tourism in Pakistan either. It’s time for SBP to enjoy the windfall & sweep the market. Save for rainy days.

The consistent inflows of foreign exchange in the country due to overseas remittances, investments through Roshan Digital Accounts, and export receipt maintaining a favorable balance of supply and demand of the greenback in the local market are causing Rupee-USD parity to gain stability gradually.

ALSO READ

Remittance Inflows Stay Above $2 Billion for Fifth Consecutive Month

Pakistan received record remittances of above $2 billion from overseas workers for the fifth consecutive month in October 2020. According to the SBP, remittances sent by Pakistani expatriates amounted to $2.3 billion during October 2020. The measures taken by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to encourage overseas Pakistanis to send money home through legal channels have started to show results.

SBP Governor, Dr. Reza Baqir, yesterday shared the data on Roshan Digital Accounts. The Governor said that the outcome of the initiative has been satisfactory and encouraging. He said that over 36,000 RDAs have been opened in less than two months, fetching over USD 65 million. Furthermore, he added that the number of accounts and amounts remitted, and investment is growing by each day.

The increase in the foreign exchange reserves has boosted the local currency against the greenback. According to the data released by the State Bank of Pakistan, the foreign currency reserves held by the SBP on November 06 were recorded at $12,740.5 million, registering an increase of $558 million as compared with $12,182.6 million.

“The increase in reserves is mainly attributed to the receipt of $500 million as GoP [Government of Pakistan] loan proceeds,” the SBP said.

Pakistan’s currency, which has been a managed-float for most of its history, has seen long periods of stability followed by devaluation. As part of a $6 billion loan approved last year to avert a default, Pakistan agreed with the IMF to adjust its currency to a market-based exchange rate that allowed it to move both ways.

Is USD/PKR Approaching Pre-Lockdown level of 155?

The rupee has strengthened 6.10 percent since the beginning of the rally in August end.
According to a survey conducted by Tresmark, which is an app that tracks the financial market, people are of the view that the rupee may settle at the pre-lockdown level of 155 against the US dollar but the analysts at Tresmark forecast that the parity would find strong support at 157.

In a poll conducted by Tresmark, 33 percent of respondents suggested that the rupee may oscillate between 156-159, while 27 percent suggested that it may strengthen further to 154 by the year-end. Moreover, 37 percent suggested that the rupee might depreciate to 160-163 on the grounds of political tensions and lack of foreign aid.

ALSO READ

Pakistani Rupee Continues to Climb Against the US Dollar

According to Daily Forex, the price action of the USD/PKR has turned in a significant trend the past couple of months which is noteworthy. The latest trend of the USD/PKR is challenging late March values, and if current support levels are punctured lower, the Pakistani rupee could target mid-March values near the 156.5 level eventually.

It further stated that speculators of the USD/PKR also should acknowledge that the price of the forex pair remains outside the normal scope of the global market sentiment. Certainly, Pakistan is an active and important member of the global community, but the Pakistani rupee is not among the largest or most actively traded currencies.

It must be noted that without hard facts about financial transactions taking place within the Pakistani government and commerce being conducted, this price prediction is merely a conjecture based on technical charts, it added.

The post Rupee Appreciates Again, Closing in On Pre-COVID Levels appeared first on .

from Business https://ift.tt/32DxMSH

Pakistan in Talks with Tethyan Copper to Resolve Reko Diq Dispute

Pakistan is in talks with Tethyan Copper to settle a $5.8 billion dispute around the Reko Diq copper project, Reuters reported while quoting two senior Pakistani officials.

Tethyan Copper is a joint venture between Chile’s Antofagasta and Canada’s Barrick Gold.

Last year, the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) ordered Pakistan to reimburse damages of $5.84 billion to Tethyan Copper for blocking Tethyan from developing the asset as the joint venture had already spent more than $220 million on the project.

“We have been engaged in negotiations with parties involved in the Reko Diq dispute,” Reuters quoted an official who is part of the negotiating team.

ALSO READ

Pakistan’s $6 Billion Reko Diq Penalty Might Get Annulled After Arbitrator Found Guilty

Another official was quoted as saying that the parties have been in talks for an extended period since Tethyan last year expressed willingness to explore a negotiated settlement.

Law360, a legal news service, reported this week that Tethyan had been given the go-ahead by ICSID to collect half of the arbitration award.

Having to pay out the award would wipe out nearly half of Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves as the country contends with the pandemic-driven economic crisis.

Located in Balochistan, Reko Diq is among the world’s biggest untapped copper and gold deposits. Emirates revenue, including other operating income, was reported at USD 3.2 billion, depreciating 75 percent compared with USD 12.9 billion recorded during the same period last year.

This decline has resulted due to the severe flight and travel restrictions around the world relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Emirates reduced its operating costs by 52 percent against the overall capacity decrease of 67 percent. Fuel costs have declined 83 percent compared to the same period last year. This was due to a decrease in global oil prices (down 49 percent compared to the same period last year), in addition to a 76 percent lower fuel uplift from substantially reduced flight operations during the six months up to the end of September.

ALSO READ

PIA Reports Huge Losses in First 9 Months of FY2020

Fuel, which was always the largest component of the airline’s cost in past reporting cycles, accounted for 11 percent of operating costs compared with 32 percent in the first six months of the previous year.

Despite the significant drop in operations during the six months, Emirates’ EBITDA stood positive at AED 290 million (USD 79 million) compared to AED 13.2 billion (USD 3.6 billion) for the same period last year.

Emirates Group

The Group has reported a half-year net loss of USD 3.8 billion.

The Group revenue was posted at USD 3.7 billion for the first six months of 2020-21, declining 74 percent from USD 14.5 billion) during the same period of the previous year.

This dramatic revenue decline was due to the COVID-19 pandemic which restricted global air travel for months as countries closed their borders and imposed travel restrictions. As part of pandemic containment measures, Emirates and dnata’s hub in Dubai suspended scheduled passenger flights for 8 weeks during April and May.

The Group’s cash position on 30 September 2020 stood at USD 5.6 billion compared to USD 7.0 billion as of 31 March 2020.

His Highness (HH) Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group said,

We began our current financial year amid a global lockdown when air passenger traffic was at a literal standstill. In this unprecedented situation for the aviation and travel industry, the Emirates Group recorded a half-year loss for the first time in over 30 years. As passenger traffic disappeared, Emirates and dnata have been able to rapidly pivot to serve cargo demand and other pockets of opportunity. This has helped us recover our revenues from zero to 26% of our position at the same time last year.

He further added,

We have been able to rely on our strong cash reserves, and through our shareholders and the broader financial community, we continue to ensure we have access to sufficient funding to sustain the business and see us through this challenging period. In the first half of 2020-21, our shareholders injected USD 2 billion into Emirates by way of an equity investment and they will support us on our recovery path.

The Emirates Group’s employee base, compared to 31 March 2020, has substantially decreased by 24 percent to an overall count of 81,334.

Overall capacity during the first six months of the year declined by 67 percent to 9.8 billion Available Tonne Kilometres (ATKM) due to a substantially reduced flight program over the past months, including the suspension of passenger flights at Dubai international airport for 8 weeks.

ALSO READ

UAE Denies Entry to 678 Pakistanis With Tourist Visas

Emirates carried 1.5 million passengers between 1 April and 30 September 2020, declining 95 percent from the same period last year. The volume of cargo uplifted at 0.8 million tonnes has decreased by 35 percent while yield has more than doubled by 106 percent. This reflects the extraordinary market situation for air freight during the global COVID-19 crisis which drastically reduced passenger flights led to limited available capacity while air freight demand rose strongly.

Emirates was able to uplift 65 percent of its cargo volumes compared to the same period last year, which shows its cargo division’s outstanding ability in adapting its operations to provide air freight services in this new environment.

dnata

dnata’s businesses in ground handling, catering, and travel services were heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic as customer airlines either reduced their flight schedules and service requirements or suspended operations entirely, and dynamic border restrictions around the world curbed travel demand and bookings.

The overall loss for dnata was reported at USD 396 million as compared to last year’s profit of USD 85 million. This figure includes impairment charges across dnata’s international business divisions, mainly due to goodwill.

dnata’s revenue, including miscellaneous operating income, was reported at USD 644 million, reporting a 68 percent decline compared to USD 2 billion last year.

dnata’s airport operations remain the largest contributor to its revenue with USD 454 million, depicting a 54 percent decline as compared to the same period last year. Across its operations, the number of aircraft handled by dnata declined sharply by 71 percent to 102,917, moreover, it handled 1.3 million tonnes of cargo showing a decline of 12 percent.

The post Emirates Suffers First Loss in 3 Decades appeared first on .

from Business https://ift.tt/3nm7PPw

PM Imran Khan Inaugurates Naya Pakistan Certificates

Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated Naya Pakistan Certificates (NPCs) in Islamabad on Thursday.

Naya Pakistan Certificates is an initiative of the Ministry of Finance and administered by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to offer attractive investment opportunities to overseas Pakistanis and resident Pakistanis with assets held abroad.

These certificates are available in both conventional and Shariah-compliant versions.

Addressing the audience, the Prime Minister explained how his economic team has successfully tackled the economic challenges facing Pakistan and put the country on a path of prosperity.

He acknowledged the contribution of overseas Pakistanis in addressing the pressing issue of external account deficit by continually increasing home remittances. The initiative has been widely welcomed by the overseas Pakistanis. RDAs allow opening bank accounts remotely and in a presence-less manner. Roshan Digital Accounts provide innovative banking, payment, and investment solutions for millions of overseas Pakistanis.

The Prime Minister remarked that the initiative of Naya Pakistan Certificates would add further value to the RDA. He encouraged overseas Pakistanis and resident Pakistanis to invest in NPCs through RDA.

The Prime Minister lauded the efforts of Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, and SBP Governor, Dr. Reza Baqir, for introducing the Naya Pakistan Certificates.

NPCs are sovereign instruments, denominated in USD and PKR, issued by the Government of Pakistan under the Public Debt Act, 1944, and NPC Rules 2020. The certificates can only be purchased through Roshan Digital Accounts – an initiative of State Bank of Pakistan, which was launched in September 2020.

NPCs offer attractive returns over different maturities. These special certificates are available in both conventional and Sharia-compliant versions. Resident Pakistanis who have declared their assets abroad can also invest in USD denominated NPCs. Information regarding NPCs is available at https://www.sbp.org.pk/NPC/index.html.

The minimum investment in USD denominated certificates is USD 5,000, which can be increased by integral multiples of USD 1,000 with no maximum limit. Whereas for PKR denominated certificates, the minimum investment is PKR 100,000, which can be increased by integral multiples of PKR 10,000 with no maximum limit.

The return on NPCs is subject to a 10 percent withholding tax, which is the full and final settlement of tax obligation on NPC profits. Furthermore, the overseas Pakistanis are not required to file a tax return on account of their earnings on NPCs.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, also addressed the audience on the occasion. He highlighted the various economic challenges faced by the country, specifically the COVID-19 pandemic, and also underscored the relief and economic stimulus initiatives taken by the Government of Pakistan.

ALSO READ

Roshan Digital Account by Bank Alfalah Revolutionizes Banking with Quick, Secure & Easy Banking

He emphasized that the incumbent government under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan is making effective efforts to resolve all the inherited economic woes of Pakistan. The Advisor to PM said that the launch of NPCs is a significant top-up to the Roshan Digital Account aimed at providing an attractive investment opportunity to the overseas and resident Pakistanis.

He was optimistic that overseas Pakistanis would fully utilize this opportunity to invest in NPCs.

In his address, SBP Governor, Dr. Reza Baqir, noted that the initiative of NPCs by the Ministry of Finance and the Roshan Digital Accounts initiative of SBP would go a long way in meeting the demand of overseas Pakistanis for facilitating their smooth access to the financial sector in Pakistan and provide investment opportunities to them as well as resident Pakistanis.

Also, these two initiatives will help the country not only in tapping the valuable financial resources but will also become a more consistent, reliable, and long-term source of foreign exchange flows in the country.

Sharing the data on Roshan Digital Accounts, the Governor said that the outcome of the initiative has been satisfactory and encouraging. He said that over 36,000 RDAs have been opened in less than two months, fetching over USD 65 million. He informed that the number of accounts and amounts remitted, and investment is growing by each day.

Ministers, parliamentarians, presidents and CEOs of banks, and senior officials from SBP attended the ceremony.

The post PM Imran Khan Inaugurates Naya Pakistan Certificates appeared first on .

from Business https://ift.tt/32HJxb0

Samba Bank to Float TFCs Worth Rs. 5 Billion for Expanding Operations in Pakistan

The management of Samba Bank Limited has decided to float a Rs. 5 billion Term Finance Certificate (TFC) to raise funds for the expansion of its operations in Pakistan.

According to the stock filing, the bank’s board of directors has given the go-ahead for this connection and has directed the management to obtain the necessary approvals from the regulatory authorities.

The funds will contribute to the bank’s Tier 2 capital requirement to comply with the capital adequacy ratio as prescribed by the State Bank of Pakistan.

ALSO READ

SBP Orders Payment Platforms to Block Subscriptions for Indian Content

Samba Bank is a foreign bank operating in Pakistan with 40 branches in the major cities of Pakistan. It is also part of the Saudi Financial Group (SFG) that is based in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Companies like Amazon, eBay, and Alibaba.com have already managed to capture a large share of the global market and have made their presence known worldwide.

So, how does one take advantage of this emerging opportunity and align their business to gain maximum benefit? Well, there are three major ways to take a business online and get access to an industry worth trillions of dollars. Note that this list is not based on whether these methods allow selling your products and services locally, internationally, or both – you will have to make that distinction yourself.

Here are the 3 ways to sell your products online:

ALSO READ

Empowering Pakistan with Seamless Connectivity Solutions

1. The Traditional Way

This method is complicated but its rewards can be substantially higher. It requires the setting up of an online store, listing the products, and then advertising the website to generate traffic and create orders.

You first need to buy a web domain and build your website from scratch. Then, list your products, connect with a payment gateway, and use SEO on your website to generate traffic to finally start receiving organic orders.

The whole process requires a number of unique skillsets and you may need to hire freelancers to do each task effectively. For example, you will need a web designer to make your website look presentable, a web developer to actually create the website, a content writer to fill your website with engaging content, and an SEO expert to rank your website high on Google’s search results. Additionally, there is an indefinite waiting period as the web page slowly begins to generate traffic.

Your website may not be visited on the first day, or even after a month in some cases. Moreover, attracting new customers to an online store can be a tedious, lengthy, and expensive process.

If you feel discouraged by now, note that there are numerous online resources to help you learn how to simplify performing the process. Also, if you are not short on cash, you can simply outsource each of the tasks to professionals.

If you are interested in seeing what a finished online store looks like, here is an example of a website that is run by a local company and has successfully managed to bring in a large number of sales simply from selling online.

2. Selling on Amazon.com

Being the largest online retailer in the world, this platform needs no introduction. There was a time when selling on Amazon was straightforward and lucrative – a winning combination, if there ever was one. You only had to list your product online to start getting a stream of orders within a few days. Unfortunately, selling on Amazon now requires an expert hand and a large initial budget.

The process of selling on Amazon can be divided into four categories: Product Hunting; Product Sourcing; Listing Creations; and Optimization, Ranking, and Marketing.

In other words, you start with finding a viable product that has low competition and high demand. There is usually a set criterion for the number of reviews, the profit margin, the number of units sold per day, and the selling price that helps you determine the ideal level of demand and competition.

Next, find a supplier for your product – most probably from Alibaba.com as its rates are relatively cheaper in the online B2B marketplace. You will also have to handle supply chain logistics and deliver the product directly to Amazon’s warehouse after which you will be allowed to create a product listing. Also, it is better to use highly relevant keywords and high-quality pictures to attract potential buyers.

Finally, you will have to rank your product on the first page of search engines by running a marketing campaign and advertising on social media platforms. That last part is optional if you fulfill all the previous requirements, and you may also not have to pay to market your products or services any further.

There is a considerable waiting period before you see organic orders come in and before buyers leave reviews that will then help bring in even more orders for the cycle to continue.

You are probably wondering how you are even going to become an Amazon seller when Amazon does not even operate in Pakistan. Well, the good news is that there is currently a large ecosystem of like-minded Pakistani entrepreneurs working under the company Extreme Commerce which is headed by Sunny Ali. With his invaluable guidance, Pakistanis have been able to find a way to legally and ethically sell on any Amazon market, be it for the US, Canada, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and even Australia.

If you are interested in beginning your Amazon journey as a seller with expert guidance, follow Extreme Commerce’s official Facebook page here.

ALSO READ

Local Firm Launches State-of-the-Art E-Learning Platform to Boost Service Exports

3. Selling on Alibaba.com

Alibaba.com and Amazon are two vastly different online eCommerce marketplaces. While Amazon deals strictly in retail and works on a B2C/C2C model, Alibaba.com aids businesses in buying from other businesses in what is normally termed as a B2B service. If you want to buy a single unit or item like a bedsheet, it would be difficult to do so on Alibaba.com because most sellers there have a minimum order quantity (MOQ) at which they sell and it usually does not go below 500 units on average.

Therefore, there really is no option for the common customer to buy one or even ten units of a product on Alibaba.com. Nonetheless, this is also why it is a gold mine for businesses aiming to sell their products in bulk and engage in transactions worth thousands of dollars.

One great aspect of Alibaba.com is that the majority of its buyers are repeat customers who are not looking to place a one-time order and move on. Instead, they are searching for long-term suppliers with whom they can form lasting business relationships and place repeat orders over an agreed-upon period of time. You would only need to negotiate with a buyer once for them to become your permanent source of revenue in the future.

Selling on Alibaba.com can be a profitable endeavor if done right and this requires a reasonable amount of effort before it has tangible results. However, the returns gained compared to the time and money initially invested in it are staggering.

If I have piqued your interest in selling online, I suggest you start your journey by taking this course designed by Trademor – one of Alibaba.com’s authorized channel partners. The situation prolongs hindrances for businesses’ attempts to avail fresh financing.

ALSO READ

SBP Reserves Increase by a Massive $558 Million in a Single Week

Decreasing the reflection period to 10 years will align the system with international practices, provide a conducive business environment to boost economic activities, and improve the country’s ranking in the periodic Ease of Doing Business survey conducted by the World Bank.

The eCIB is a repository of information for the credit history of borrowers of the banking system and is used mostly by banks or financial institutions to assess the creditworthiness of borrowers. However, the momentum has slowed down a little.

On November 12, 2020, PKR closed with a gain of 16 paisas against the USD. From PKR 158.49 per USD on November 11, the exchange rate went down to PKR 158.33 on November 12 (today), as per data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

At the same time, Pakistan received record remittances of above $2 billion from overseas workers for the fifth consecutive month in October 2020.

According to the SBP, remittances sent by Pakistani expatriates amounted to $2.3 billion during October 2020, increasing by 14.1 percent compared to October 2019.

The local currency is gaining due to a slowdown in importers’ demand for USD, while healthy inflows from remittances and export proceeds also boosted the value of the Rupee. On the other hand, exports are stable and improving.

PKR’s improvement against USD can be said to be the result of the inflow of remittances in USD. The measures implemented by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to encourage overseas investment in the country is another contributing factor.

Improvement in exports, primarily led by the textile sector and partially assisted by the early lifting of lockdown restrictions, has also played its part in strengthening the Rupee against the greenback.

Pakistan’s currency, which has been a managed-float for most of its history, has seen long periods of stability followed by devaluation.

As part of a $6 billion loan approved last year to avert a default, the nation agreed with the IMF to adjust its currency to a market-based exchange rate that allowed it to move both ways.

The post Rupee Continues to Gain Against Dollar As Pakistan Receives Record Remittances appeared first on .

from Business https://ift.tt/38Ay28Z

Mari Petroeum and Attock Refinery Jointly Begin Refining Operations for Crude Oil from Balochistan Field

Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) has taken Attock Refinery Limited (ARL) onboard and initiated the process of refining crude oil from Balochistan.

According to the notification issued to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Extended Well Testing (EWT) production recently commenced after necessary arrangements.

ALSO READ

Pakistan to Import 6 More Cargoes of LNG for January

The well currently produces approximately 800 BPD of crude oil at 28/64” choke size with a Wellhead Flowing Pressure (WHFP) of 165 Psi.

Earlier in 2018, a crude oil discovery was made at the exploratory well Bolan East-1 in Balochistan.
